What you NEED TO KNOW to catch BIG canal PERCH

  • This week I headed out with James from @thefishingdiary for a day of Perch fishing on the Kennet and Avon Canal. The question is - was it the worms or the livebaits that won the day?
    The water conditions looked good but for some reason, the fish weren't feeding as confidently as they have been recently.
    To find the fish I had to move swims multiple times, and even switched from worms to livebaits - to find out which one worked in the end you're going to have to watch the video.

    The best bait for me and ive been fishing since 1975 ,,my biggest perch 4 lb 2oz caught on lob worms 😅

      It really comes down to venue. If they are on small lives then they can't be beaten, yet I can remember a big gravel pit where small fish were few and far between and lobs scored highly, then on others prawns out fish everything else. 4lb 2oz, cracking pb!

      I fish a small pond with a head of very big Perch. Ive tried lobs most times and just rarely pick the Perch up. I switch to Roach and bang bang bang. Ive caught a 4.15 girl (caught her twice there now) and two 3's on the same hour. As Duncan says, venues differ.

    Really enjoyed this. Makes a nice change from the overproduced videos on RUclips. Would you also spray maggots when livebaiting?

      Hi Danny, I don't as usually on the move when live baiting but know many anglers that do when staying in one swim.

    Fun video lots of great tips and helpful fish and dog poo location. Disappointingly not told which to avoid or how the latter can be used as a bait enhancer.

      Dog poo goo now added to the Pigeon poo goo to expand the range. Perch poo goo also in development 😂

      @jameswhite2614 That may not sell, as Fox is getting into a range of baits soon. Called the fox poo range.🤣

    Entertaining video guys, love the tackle and method details.
    I’ve never tried live baiting before.. how do I get over the element of the unfair cruel factor with it?
    Yep dog turds along the tow path pisses me off 😖💩
    Keep up the good content 👌

      Thanks @johnmurphy1466 - pleased you noticed the effort that went into the rig details in the edit. I’ve tried that before but think I’ll stick with it for future vids now.

      Hi John, Thanks for your kind words and when I use live baits I tend to think that the live I am using had earlier eaten a maggot, and that pike/perch eat small fish so if its not mine it will be another one. Basically it's all down to the individual, Im ok using them but know others that can't do it, its really up to you.

    Some interesting learning points. Can I ask how you hook your livebaits fir perch - lip hook or elsewhere? I've read different views on this.

    • @duncancharmanangling1136
      @duncancharmanangling1136  7 месяцев назад

      I think it's all down to personal preference, in the lip, dorsal or tail. I lightly lip hook mine and strike immediately and 9/10 they are hooked in the side of the mouth.

    For how long is it ok to keep them out of the water..?
    It seemed like ages, whilst you were talking at the end. 🤔

  • @chrisgadsden-o2m

    Hi Duncan, you did not say whether you were hooking your small lives in the lip or the dorsal. I;m guessing the lip. I usually lip hook but a week ago I tried hooking my barbless size 6 just in front of the dorsal, on your rig [except all my three way swivels were much too big] I used 1 braid stopper on the up trapping my swivel and two below it. I was on the BW and this time I caught no perch, just a couple of pike. Both doubles though. Both takes were within 5 mins. Of course if I had lip hooked them those bites might have come just as quick. What is your opinion?

    • @duncancharmanangling1136
      @duncancharmanangling1136  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Chris,
      I always lightly lip hook my lives and even when striking immediately rarely miss a bite. A small live against even a small jacks pike mouth, its in there and as for perch I find these even more aggressive literally sucking in, turning and swallowing a small I've in a split second. Would love to find a company that produce small, strong three-way swivels!

    Only fished a few times for perch with lobworms but every time the float has shot under it's been a 2lb+ fish.

      The boat people on this stretch are fine, and most dog walkers clean up but theirs always one! I gave up canal fishing 30years ago, matches on the Wy Nav around Addlestone, Surrey, shit city. The fishing wasn't much better! Thanks for your comment, appreciate it...
