I went to DanDong about 20 years ago, while visiting China. I lived in Taiwan and speak pretty good Chinese, but it was my first trip to the mainland. My overriding memory was how the Chinese side was bustling, especially at night, with bright lights, music, restaurants and families out walking along the promenade. Meanwhile, just across the river, it was deserted. A city, but no lights, no people other than occasional guards. They even had a ferrris wheel though it never moved in the couple of days I was there. Occasionally I would see lights at night, but it was only ever trucks or trains going back or forth. I had previously been to the NK border with South Korea, and that was a very different feeling, as the NK side was trying to put on a show to make things look better, although their "propaganda" village was half-built, stalled thorugh lack of resources and also deserted.
I have seen many North Koreans and Burmese trying to cross over the fence between their countries and China just for survival and basic security. God bless them 😢
@@NoComment-hh3rnthey don’t cross over in dandong, if you go up north a little there’s zero guard on the Chinese side, very easy to cross. Sad thing is lots of the women get human trafficked once they crossed the border by their smugglers.
They would be risking themselves for sure crossing that border illegally. Since Kim Jong Um came into power in 2011 I read that land mines were planted all along the border on the N. Korean side to take out those who attempt to flee to China.

The US military on General MacArthur's command bombed parts of Dandong. This was when the Chinese volunteer army moved in. The amazing thing about the Korean war was that the Americans had complete control of the air space because the Chinese didn't have planes at the time! The US also had the support of many allies providing both military and aid support. Good job man risking ❤
The border between China and North Korea is the longest border in North Korea, measuring 1,352 kilometers (or 840 miles) by distance, it follows the rivers of Amnok/Yalu and Tumen rivers.
Indeed
Hats off to the ppl who watched a 21 min video in 2 mins
lol
Hold Ya FARD 🤯
The bridge on which we see trucks from/to the DPRK also has railway tracks. I took a train from Pyongyang to Beijing a few years ago (but I’m not from the USA).
I found this to be so interesting. Thank you
wow, the place of the next video is my hometown, what I want you know is that chongqing is so cool, not only the spicy food, but also the moutain and terrain, welcome to chongqing!!!
One thing that would be interesting, but really difficult to do would be hearing from the truck drivers crossing over the river or the train operators. That would be fascinating.

It’s a very good comment that your guide makes about the animals don’t have borders, but humans do.
Actually we have a Dutch song which lyrics translates: ‘the birds fly from east to West Berlin. They are not called back, they are not shot down.
Over the wall, over the iron curtain. Because sometimes they want to be in the west, and sometimes in the east.
Because there’s bread in the west, and sometimes there’s is bread in the east’

Good morning Drew, I Love watching ur Videos. Ingat Palage❤
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO!!
Nice video.
i always love your videos. keep this up
VERY cool video. I love how fascinated you are by it all.
That was a really interesting video! Thank you for showing us this city!
I have seen many North Koreans and Burmese trying to cross over the fence between their countries and China just for survival and basic security. God bless them 😢
😂😂😂😂 another propaganda good job man
@@samorayee420 Believe it or not China is a better place to live than Myanmar under a civil war and freaking North Korea.
@@samorayee420 I’m telling you the truth. What’s wrong with you and your brain?
@@NoComment-hh3rnthey don’t cross over in dandong, if you go up north a little there’s zero guard on the Chinese side, very easy to cross. I say this because my hometown is near there and everybody in the village has seen North Koreans crossing illegally, it’s no big deal, majority of them are not political refugees just people trying to get a better life.
Thanks for illuminating this part of the planet for us, Drew. So interesting. In Tangier, Morocco I experienced similar treatment, being totally ignored and never waited on in a restaurant filled with men.
Nobody ignored him, they told him they don’t speak English so can’t have a conversation, you learn Chinese nobody is ignoring you

Thanks for the memories... I visited Dandong 10 years ago, sharing your obsession. Great Wall looks fantastic here; I missed that one. A perfect excuse to go back!
bro you acted like a real spy
The sign saying "For the hapiness of you *and your family* please be careful not to cross the fence." Gave me shivers. The fact that your family is affected by crossing a fence is such a profound thought to me...
So epic! Thanks for making this video
One would think that the US would have won this battle but it was pushed all the way back to the 28th parallel border, and that concluded the Korean war.
Also, the bit when the the South Korean said that parts of Dandong was wierd and a little scary, parts of Seoul and the rest of south Korea looks like that as well lol
yeah! it was a bit weird because i've seen many videos from some areas in Seoul that look very messy, slumlike, way worse than that alley they were walking on while saying that, haha!
4:08 That's the flag of the USSR.
Yes, it looks like it, but that is the first flag that the People's Republic of China used during its revolution in the 1950s.

When people say North Korea is the 1980s China, they mean economically and politically. China has politically reformed and is obviously an economic giant today.
Politically reformed? In what sense?
@@68Bocahere’s a hint. No communism is practiced in China
@@Squared_Table They are more capitalist these days, for sure, but to say there is no communism in China at all is ridiculous lol. Their president is literally a member of the Communist Party of China. China is an authoritarian dictatorship. I am a Chinese. I find that many people mistake China's system for North Korea. In fact, it is very different. Before 1978, the systems in China and North Korea were almost identical. Later, China began its reform and opening-up policy, which was fully implemented in 1982. Since then, China has been accepting new ideologies until today.,

The border footage with the people walking in circles is so chilling. I just looked up the amusement park and it looks to be completely abandoned and run down. Where they were walking looks like some type of pool or swimming area. And what is crazier, is there is a "Customs" government office right outside the park. The satellite view looks straight out of a horror movie.
Regarding your comment about the cameras, my assumption is that they are divided into different security sectors. It is likely that some individuals monitor one specific area while others monitor a different area.
