(although i've been living overseas for about 18 years now). that weird looking circular orange building you see from across the river actually belonged to my great-grandparents before the start of the korean war. they used to do business in north korea, and that building was a hotel-restaurant. however since the start of the war, the building has been vacated and bought over by the north korean government!

The reason you are being asked to delete these footage is to protect North Koreans in China, but also for your own safety. Some North Koreans will do whatever it takes to protect their identities because they have nothing to lose. And there must have been some foreign spies in Dandong, especially at a time when the situation on the Korean Peninsula was very tense.

Minus the skies being so grey the country itself is so beautiful. It’s sad on how the ruling class decides who we speak to. Government destroys humanity because we the people allow it to happen. It is not the individual person the average person that is mean it is the government that trains the minds of people starting from a child.
So here in America you are slowly and methodically trained to hate other countries so when they open the borders to other countries we are trained to hate fight each other. So in the end is to divide & conquer the people. In the Bible it says my people know who they are because of lack of knowledge. I’m not a Bible scholar I do not memorize scripture but one thing I do know is having faith in whom who created the earth.
Once again I love watching & learning different cultures the people you meet are such beautiful people. I would to be able to see another country.

To be honest, there are not so many Korean Chinese people living in Dandong, they account for less than 1% of Dandong's population. Most Korean Chinese live in Yanbian and Changbai, close to the northeastern border of North Korea. There you can feel the real Korean Chinese culture.

In addition, South Korea does not care about North Koreans at all, voice is big and action is small, only accepting 100 North Koreans per half year, if they really want, China can send 1,000 North Koreans to South Korea per year, especially in winter.

I went into North Korea on a budget tour from Dandong in 2018. Dandong didn't seem as sketchy then as Drew makes it out to be in the video, with the exception that as a foreigner I got a lot more stares from locals than any other place in China. Just another Chinese city that happens to border with North Korea. I enjoyed my time there. A lot of the attractions are in walking distance. When you look at North Korea from the broken bridge the idea of going inside is super exciting but when you actually take the train over to Sinŭiju the reality isn't quite as thrilling as expectations. Never left the train in Sinŭiju. All of the immigration is done on the train as the immigration officer comes on board. Not much to see of Sinŭiju outside the train window. Just a clean train platform with Some North Korean guards having a laugh among themselves. from there to Pyongyang it's just alot of brown farmland and locals on bikes. When you reach Pyongyang, that's when it gets more interesting.

There is (was?) a boat tour just north of city center where you can charter a small speed boat and go cruise into North Korea. Back in 2015 I took this boat and went into the housing compounds and saw their daily life within 20yards. A military officer with a gun even shyly waved at our boat as we cruised by. We also encountered a North Korean vendor who rowed his boat beside ours to sell items from North Korea. Now I think about it, maybe a bit risky (if the boat sank we would be walking onto North Korean land) but when you’re young and curious there wasn’t much hesitation to hop on that tour boat.

Well, you could assume that in a border town. Maybe not in the rest of China, but you can make the assumption at a border town. To be honest, it is hard to keep track of different ethnic groups in China, since there are so many groups and languages and different points in history. It’s a very good comment that your guide makes about the animals don’t have borders, but humans do.
Actually we have a Dutch song which lyrics translates: ‘the birds fly from east to West Berlin. They are not called back, they are not shot down.
Over the wall, over the iron curtain. Because sometimes they want to be in the west, and sometimes in the east.
Because there’s bread in the west, and sometimes there’s is bread in the east’
Her comment reminded me of this song (Over de muur - Klein Orkest).

I went to DanDong about 20 years ago, while visiting China. I lived in Taiwan and speak pretty good Chinese, but it was my first trip to the mainland. My overriding memory was how the Chinese side was bustling, especially at night, with bright lights, music, restaurants and families out walking along the promenade. Meanwhile, just across the river, it was deserted. A city, but no lights, no people other than occasional guards. They even had a ferrris wheel though it never moved in the couple of days I was there.
Occasionally I would see lights at night, but it was only ever trucks or trains going back or forth.
I had previously been to the NK border with South Korea, and that was a very different feeling, as the NK side was trying to put on a show to make things look better, although their "propaganda" village was half-built, stalled thorugh lack of resources and also deserted.

The US military on General MacArthur's command bombed parts of Dandong. This was when the Chinese volunteer army moved in. The amazing thing about the Korean war was that the Americans had complete control of the air space because the Chinese didn't have planes at the time! The US also had the support of many allies providing both military and aid support. One would think that the US would have won this battle but it was pushed all the way back to the 28th parallel border, and that concluded the Korean war.
