There's been a lot big news coming out about Atari lately. It's an exciting time for all of us retro gamers.
Atari is on FIRE!!! I’m lovin it!!!!
DUN DUN DUN! Called it, Atari is going to be the Microsoft of retro. Atari is BACK!
My favorite company from my childhood is back!!! Love it!!!
This is not that Atari. The current Atari was a French software company names Infogrames that purchased the name and some IP years ago, and changed their name.
@@will_it_work Atari was bought and sold more than once in the 1970s and 1980s as well. So when exactly did it become "not that Atari"?
What? 🤣
@@will_it_work Infogrames went bankrupt in 2013 so it's not really *that Infogrames* either.
There's no denying Atari have spent the majority of time since rising from the ashes being a poor steward of the brand and the IP they hold but most of that was down to the prior leadership (Frederic Chenais) who has since been bought out by the current CEO (Wade Rosen) and as of a year ago is no longer associated with the company at all.
It does seem that the Rosen is actually trying to turn things around so that's a positive thing if he can pull it off.
@@will_it_work Just stop your misinformation.
I have the BIGGEST SMILE on my face right now. Nightdive is an amazing acquisition for Atari and I will share a story. I contacted Ziggurat who I think are owned by Nightdive about acquiring the rights to an old game they own and they were like "NOPE", and I was upset as it didn't make sense not to on such a minor property but if they were in talks to be sold then it makes sense. But as an Atari fan these are some great things however I still want new and original content even if based on old IPs.
Happy to help bring you a smile! 😁
Atari, Nightdive, Kex engine = Great time to be an Atari fan with modern gaming systems. Looking forward to this! We need "Adventure Recharged"!!! its already a joystick game so there will be no paddle issues, LOL! KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON!!!
Hells to the yes! I've been suggesting Adventure every time they ask on social what should be recharged next!
Oh my god!! I love Warlords..could you imagine Warlords online..WOW. Useto play this on a single system (Amiga for me) with a group of friends in the same room and took turns. Neat article - thanks
The Amiga clone was pretty good - I remember!
Very awesome news!
to graphically remaster old IPs for the modern generation would be great. A bit like Intellivision tried to do with failed Amico. Those simple games looked great with modern graphics.
Thank you, Jon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For you are most awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are!
being a night dive studios fan, not sure i'm feeling the same way.
That's entirely understandable. Should be an interesting acquisition to watch unfold either way.
I wish they'd buy back the Gauntlet IP from Warner and rejuvenate the current PC title. Would be so good to have Atari back in charge of that, it has so much retro potential and a loyal following.
There are a few of those. Battlezone is another I'd like to see come back home.
@@GenXGrownUpAnd Math Grand Prix!
Nightdive are a great acquisition. Last game I picked up by them was the awesome Sega Saturn game Powerslave Exhumed. The N64 Turok is another great game that comes to mind :-)
Very, very interesting. I have a very good feeling about all of this.
I think the first time I heard about Nightdive was when it saved System Shock from “Can’t Play On Modern PCs Without Jumping Through Hoops” limbo. Good pick-up for Atari!
Love night dive. Really hope they port some shooters to the vcs which it desperately needs.
Nightdive is apparently in charge of the Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition. If you didn't know, ROTT was supposed to be a direct sequel to Wolfenstein 3d complete with digitized sprites of real life actors. It used the same engine as Wolf3d but had lots of weird gimmicks and the levels had high ceilings. It's not as loved as other iD based properties and the source ports don't really play well with current versions of Windows.
I hope Atari do something with the Tex Murphy games.
Kind of Blade Runner-y, right?
@@GenXGrownUp yeah, Tex Murphy is a private detective in the future. I played the original "Mean Streets" on my Atari st. It had a great story to it. So it would love to see Atari do something with these titles so we can all have access to them.
Good news! Some cool stuff happening for sure. Thanks John!
You bet!
Atari CEO Wade Rosen owned 13% of Nightdive before the takeover. With Atari's stock price being low, half of the $10mil acquisition price being in shares gives Nightdive's owners a substantial stake in Atari. This makes me think of the term "reverse takeover".
🤔
I didn’t even think that Atari had the capital for this.
Now all we need PONG 2 : the legend of the balls , lol
Or we could just cobble together a script out of Pong Quest: ruclips.net/video/tKSy6Vx-Osw/видео.html
This is exciting - hopefully they can lean into resurrecting their IPs and continue with other abandon IPs as well.
❤
At the moment i dont trust Atari but if they live up to their hype and give the consoles SYSTEM SHOCK and the classic game BLOOD FRESH SUPPLY then I will see them differently but it's great for Night dive studios to merge with a major game company
guess atari got the cash now.
nightdive a good choice for fps games.
is atari working on a new system? me thinks they are since the announcement of multiple hardwares they have.
I'd be very surprised if Atari went back to the hardware well. There's a lot less risk in becoming a software dev, and they're currently doing it right.
@@GenXGrownUp its very possible with the amount of stuff they are buying. last time they didnt had the cash. so they gots crewed over. might have something to do with those hotels they have.
Holy (censored)!
😮holy Sh$&
My thoughts exactly!
@@GenXGrownUp i purchase every game by Nightdive studios that comes out!
Hopefully now theyll bother to make patches for blood fresh supply since atari cut them off back in 2019 and that game still needs some work
🤔
@@GenXGrownUp you realize atari has made other stuff besides arcade games right you should play blood it slaps
@@jknifgijdfui Yes, I might have heard something about that. 😜
I hope this doesn't effect their non-Atari work
Technically, it's ALL Atari work now. 😉 But I know what you mean, and agree.
@@GenXGrownUp yeah, i been waiting for that new System Shock
Atari isn't the same atari from 40 years ago. They've had a recent history with scams like the atari vcs and crypto. I won't be surprised if they force nightdive into having Microtranscations in the future.
Nightdive doesn't focus on the nostalgia being the main selling point of their games. They bring old games back that only had one way of playing. And that deserved getting attention. Atari brings back old games just to rely on nostalgia sales. One of the reasons why they sell plug and play systems. For atari nostalgia>quality = high sales with less effort
I understand the sentiment, but don't entirely agree. Atari isn't the company of forty years ago, nor are they the one of 10 years ago. The current ownership/management has brought the company back from the brink with some clever leverage of legacy IP (what I think you attribute to relying on nostalgia) in recent years. The VCS wasn't a scam - it was an underwhelming product. Atari doesn't sell plug-n-plays, it licenses its IP to hardware manufacturers in order to turn a profit. Like you, I'm also suspect of the whole crypto venture, though. Atari is in a weird situation where they just can't win with popular opinion. If they stick to the classics, they're criticized for mining nostalgia; if they try to innovate they're criticized for doing things that aren't "Atari" enough (hotels come to mind).
Lastly, I thank you for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. I hope some of the philosophy of Nightdive you describe rubs off on Atari.
Idk man. I like Atari and I love Nightdive. But Nightdive is best at doing these FPS and TPS remasters and I don’t really want to see them working on as you said “four player online Warlords” instead of like
Turok 3 or System Shock etc.
who said it would be mutually exclusive?
Hrm. Do you think it would be a one-or-the-other scenario? With the added resources of Atari, I would hope they would increase output rather than just divert. But you never know. Valid concern.
I would love to see a 4-player online Warlords! That would be a total blast!
@@johndough8115 you mean that the internet will handle a 50 player CoD game with countless bullet paths being processed at the same time along with all of the vehicles, grenades, rockets, etc. in 3D HD graphical environment. But, can’t handle 1 Pong like ball with 4 players in 1980s era game!?!? I don’t see it. Sorry.
For the love of Pete don’t delay System Shock again 🙄
Haha! I'm right there with you on that sentiment!
So Nightdive is dead, some incompetent executives we'll take care of it
The executives are incompetent, eh? I see.
