  • Atari has acquired the rights to 12 classic arcade properties including Berzerk and Frenzy.
After speculating on what the additional 10 games might be just one day ago, the full list is now here. Jon runs you through a quick overview of the full set of 12 titles for which Atari has now acquired distribution rights.
The publisher said the deal will allow it to create new games based on its newly-acquired franchises, expand the digital and physical distribution of those classic titles, and explore brand and merchandising collaborations.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen explained the acquisition is part of the company's broader strategy of "commercializing classic retro IP," and described top-down shooter Berzerk as a perfect example of the sort of title Atari wants to reinvigorate.
"Berzerk is one of those foundational games that so many people first encountered playing on an Atari console," added Rosen in a press release.

Most of that list seemed like pretty obscure Stern titles, many I wasn't familiar with. However, one I was was Rescue. I played this game for months on end at a laundromat when I was probably 6 or 7. The game is a brilliant two stick shooter merged with a horizontal style shootumup with the added complexity of dropping down Choplifter-style to rescue survivors. With increasing stage difficulty, the whole package creates very dynamic gameplay years ahead of it's time. I played this competitively years later in my 20s on the MAME highscore tables placing in and out of the top 3, over several months, and consider myself a bit of an expert at this game. Thrilled to see it on the list.,

Atomic Castle was a planned LaserDisc game, along with a Pinball called Lazer Lord that was also planned before Stern Electronics closed after the passing of Sam Stern, so I can only assume they only reached prototype stage. Stern Electronics big claim to fame was bringing Konami games to US Shores as the U.S. Licensee of Scramble, Super Cobra, and a few others while SEGA brought Frogger and Centuri Electronics brought Time Pilot & Gyruss to the States before Konami opened a U.S. Office.

Have you checked to see if _Atomic Castle_ plays on your Game Station Pro, or to see if/how _Dark Planet_ handles the backdrop since this acquisition and the release of the AGSP... ? I’d imagine a simple flat layer .jpg, or even a slightly polygonal shape that mimics the pictured surface beneath would work, with the pic as a texture, and some random game modder could pretty easily that variant to the original game. I suppose they’d pro’lly having to flip the game vertically, too, ‘cause I think the monitor reflected off a mirror through which the background showed, like _Space Invaders_ did (speaking of games Atari should buy, because most people still associate it with the Atari VCS 2600, as opposed to the Taito arcade machine or any Greatest Hits Collection, not to diss Taito, of course.
Perhaps playing them on the AGSP and/or doing a deep dive into each of them could make a cool video (series)-to get people more familiar with the IP(s)-if you can maybe get permission from Atari (and sponsorship or even access to whatever archival stuff they might have (from Stern?) 40+ years ago would be awesome and really help the channel, I think)
Maybe I just have the idea on the brain, righ’now, ‘cause I actually just got done rewatching your video about Atari signing with APA (great content, btw), their multi-platform media IP rep, wondering if you’d thought of doing “Let’s Plays” (Do they still call them that? Is that still a thing? I guess maybe I just don’t watch Twitch or Cinnemasacre very often, anymore... ) or other “live action” and “unscripted” content with Atari? Looking into these 12 arcade titles’ backgrounds-and perhaps the 10 M(attel) Network set of Atari-acquired games playing on your 2600+-could make for some great content - maybe even the carnival shooter game. 🥸

The same Berzerk machine at that same location was involved in a second death several years later. Two guys got into a scuffle apparently over money left on the bezel to reserve a game; they both got kicked out of Friar Tuck's and one ambushed and fatally stabbed the other not far from the place.

Ok so Atomic Castle got me curious, and aparently "arcade games" started even way back in teh 19040s with Atomic Bomber? Something akin to a military bombmer simulator of sorts among others. An article as wikipedia for "Early history of video games" shed some interesting light on the concept. I didn't realize that style of "game" went back that far, I alwyas assume the 70s was where it started

Those electro-mechanical games always fascinate me. There's a small arcade museum just south of where I live that has a couple from that era. They cannot be emulated, so the only way to enjoy them is to find one working in the wild. Love 'em.

I suspected as much that none of the Konami titles (or ones involving other companies as with Bagman, Pop Flamer, and more) would be present when I looked at the list of Stern arcade games on Wikipedia. Why? because there were just about 12 games on the list not involving other companies so I guessed those would be the ones Atari acquired (licensed?). Oddly, Atomic Castle is not on Wikipedia's list. Was it a prototype perhaps?

I'm sure we'll learn more soon enough.

Great to see Berzerk get an outing but frankly, I'm tired of playing crippled games because of the lack of a paddle/spinner option with modern consoles. Sure the new VCS has that option but the controller costs a PACKET now - and we really need a viable solution for more mainstream platforms like PC or Switch. I remember playing Mazer Blazer in the arcade - it had a large two handed laser controller you used to aim at the screen - another game that really needs proper control options to make it enjoyable. The dual stick games look good though.
