    Drake humanizing himself would definitely have me more interested as a hip-hop fan.
    But my point of disagreement with the professor is in tying it back to the beef. He needs to distance himself from it but can probably throw a few bars acknowledging its aftermath and toll on him even while dismissing its validity.
    All of this, however, assumes a level of self-awareness that im not sure permeates the bubble of his stans and OVO yes men that accompany him.

    I think we also need to consider that there has been no real evolution seen in Drake as of yet.
    I mean he is 37 years old, and has been doing his thing for like 15 years. Meaning his core fans started this journey with him when they were - what, 13-15 years old? They will be 28-30 (and older) now.
    Most of his core fans are married, divorced, parents, single parents, successful & failed business people, etc. by now cause real life does happen.
    Drake to me, is like that childhood friend, who in his late 30s early 40s still wanting to meet up to do stuff we used to do in the hood as teenagers. C'mon bro! 😂
    So since he can't hang with his mates any more, he'll go make new younger friends, and start hanging with Lil Yachty (who is 26) and young girls, to pacify his new but much younger fans.
    Just grow up, evolve and do you. What else does he really have to prove to anyone at this point? Maybe the gambling addiction is something he should look into. 🤷🏾‍♂️

    Drake must go back to his roots. I mean there was a missed opportunity for Drake here.
    The opportunity for him to show what Canada really is like sonically. Cause I have always wondered what Canada Contemporary music really is like.
    Just as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Fireboy FML, Kizz Daniel, etc. All these Nigerian artists put Nigeria on through Afrobeats. People understand Nigerian lingo now, the culture, the food, and lifestyle.
    Drake should taken Lil Wayne's advice to just be himself instead of doing American 100%.

    So my wife has her car radio always set to this station that plays all genres of music, but ever since Kendrick dropped "Not Like Us," this radio station went from playing little to no Drake to playing literally all of the hits Drake performed. They're playing hits from "So Far Gone" to "For the Dogs." How do you bounce back from someone calling you a colonizer and you don't actually have the talent to support 'YOUR' true sound? He is in heavy debt to the industry, and someone just exposed you for what you truly are as an artist and as a man. The 85% may accept his music like they did R. Kelly after the controversy but even R. Kelly had the talent to rise above. I don't think Drake has a true audience outside of the 25 and below crowd. I don’t agree. He can’t just decide to humanize himself and pull an 8-Mile. That worked in THAT movie. It won’t work because:
    1) People don’t need to be reminded of the beef and what was said about him.
    2)Him agreeing makes him look super weak and soft. Hip-hop is a genre about vibrato.
    3) Additionally, word through the grapevine is that Drake under an agreement to not even mention the beef with Kendrick again, without facing consequences.
    His course of action should be:
    1) Stay quiet through the summer. Come back this autumn or winter.
    2) Feature on up and coming artist’s project and make club bangers with them.
    3) Have his own project ready to release a few weeks after that. Any address to the insults from the beef should be minimized to one line here or there spread out over the album. (DO NOT explain yourself, Drake)
    This will allow people time to have the “Drake Deconstructed” to simmer down. Also, people can’t resist a new club banger.

As controversial as he is. He's at the very least consistent with who he is as a human being, ghostwriting or not. Drake on the other hand is an actor. Thats just what it is. There's no sense of authenticity within his character. His worst qualities have always been there, its just he's been able to get away with it for so long he's gone overboard, lost in the sauce as gucci mane would say. Who is he even at this point of time. His whole mythos is based off streaming records and trends of the year. We don't know anything about the real human being and its because it's probably not that interesting. The character of drake he portrays is shallow as it is. What deep layers of himself can he even show this deep into his career without exposing himself as a complete fraudulent?

    Not that I want to see Drake 'bounce back' (I don't), but I agree this approach is exactly right from a branding/image perspective. His only real way out of the whole situation is to address it in a meaningful way, and spin it to his advantage as best he can.
    But he has to go through the fire, face his demons, come out the other end, and deftly maneuver through the entire process for that to work. If history is any indication, Drake simply doesn't have the emotional maturity or ability to introspect that would require.
    As Kendrick laid bare, Drake doesn't actually know who he is. That's why his music is so vapid and stuck in a period of his life that's long passed. He's lost in the character of Drake, and his ego is too big to allow any real growth at this point. (Although, if he actually took Kendrick's advice and attended an ayahuasca ceremony to "strip [his] ego from the bottom", the results could be shockingly positive...)
    Barring Drake actually reflecting/growing (which is doubtful), probably the only way to get him to make the "right" PR moves to spin this situation beneficially for himself, would be to have someone at UMG (or someone who otherwise has enough leverage and influence) convince him that the steps outlined in this video are his idea, and play to his ego. Literally write the lyrics for him, have him perform them, and convince him it's gonna "get Kendrick back" and "put him back on top".
    How I actually see this playing out though is: he releases a 'summer vibes' album, as he's indicated. It's mostly chill sing-songy stuff (like Daddy Kendrick told him to do), but his spin is that this was his plan all along. The general public, who is only vaguely aware of the details of this whole beef, eat it up. The album does just fine. Maybe not as great as it would have otherwise, but serviceable at the very least.
    Maybe his reputation within the industry is damaged to the point that he can't get hot features any more, and/or younger artists no longer see a Drake feature as a desirable co-sign. Maybe his influence and sales taper off with each subsequent release and he slowly fades away. Or maybe people really do have such short attention spans and the 24/7 news cycle is so numbing that he can just fully bounce back by doing what he's always done. I wouldn't be surprised. Plus, UMG has unlimited money to throw at this problem. That will probably solve it eventually.
    I believe Kendrick's approach of trying to tarnish Drake's image in the industry to cut off his ability to trend hop and leech for perpetual relevance was correct, I just don't know if it will ultimately succeed. A lot of it probably depends on how well all of these allegations stick, and what other dirty details come to light. Kendrick doesn't strike me as the type of person to put his own reputation on the line for completely unfounded gossip, so I'm guessing he knows things we don't, and is playing the long game waiting for it all to surface.
    I certainly hope it does though. Drake doesn't have anything of value to contribute to the music industry or culture at large, and they'd be better off without his influence. He should retire to Turks, have a nice long life, and pop up on a feature every now and then if he wants. I'm sure people would tolerate him in small doses as they're reminded of the good old 2010s when he was on top of the world. (Of course his ego will never allow that, and it'll ultimately be his downfall.)
    Last note: it would be hysterically bittersweet if this whole beef at least tarnishes Drake's image enough that he's unable to get the last #1 he needs to top Michael Jackson's record (and he's forever stuck tied for the record). That would eat his ego alive for the rest of his life.

    I hope somebody addresses all the gatekeeping that's been happening since Not Like Us dropped. All the culture vulture talk is out of control...and I'm not just talking about Drake. I know it's a sensitive topic, but the fact is HipHop is now too big to police. I really don't think it's going to be possible - or good for that matter - to tell other races, nationalities and ethnicities that they don't belong in HipHop

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  4 месяца назад

      That's not the message of the song, though I can see some outsiders running with that narrative. But specifically, what kind of gate keeping are you referring to and why is it a bad think its good for hip hop to gatekeep?

    • @Kiki-xx3fj
      @Kiki-xx3fj 4 месяца назад

      @@TheCompanyMan I love the song and I love Kendrick - I'm not saying it's the message of the song, but ppl are interpreting it that way. It's not too difficult to find vids on RUclips, TikTok etc that are advocating for HipHop to be an all, and ONLY, black American genre. RUclips especially was flooded with those kinds of vids. This isn't anything new but it's just a little more vocal now. I'm just saying it's a very slippery slope. Just as an example of what I'm talking about - I wouldn't be surprised if there would be ppl saying that Professor Skye needs to know his place and that his opinion doesn't matter because he's white. I understand the desire to protect the genre, but I'm just concerned that the focus is going to be on things like skin color and geography instead of a love and deep knowledge of the art. Hope I cleared that up. As someone who fell in love with HipHop over 30 years ago I just want to make it clear that I understand that it's a music genre that originates from African Americans, but ppl saying that only African Americans can be a part of all aspects - rapping, journalism, producing, record labels etc - is detramental to the genre.

    • @TheCompanyMan
      @TheCompanyMan  4 месяца назад

      Professor Skye's already received comments like that, which I think he briefly alludes to in this conversation if I'm not mistaken. But his respect for the culture oozes innately in his conversation and perspective. Like Rakim says, it ain't where you from, it's where you're at and there are a number of people of all races who treat hip hop like some sort of anthropology experiment or some cash cow that can be pimped on their way to the promised land. But take for example other forms of black music that were completely co-opted. Rock, for example. Jazz, for example. Country, probably the biggest example. Country music has spent decades limiting the reach of black country artists because no one is alive anymore who remembers that it was another genre started by black people. The black community understands that and that's about it. That's why Lil Nas X caught so much blow back or Beyonce all those years with country songs on her albums that the country committee at the recording academy wouldn't recognize. It's a genre that was co-opted by outsiders who intensely gate keep who's allowed in the inner circle to this day. With that in mind, what's the slippery slope of hip hop gate keeping the culture?

    • @Kiki-xx3fj
      @Kiki-xx3fj 4 месяца назад

      @@TheCompanyManyes, I completely agree with every single thing you said here. I guess what I’m trying to articulate is that the housekeeping needs to start at the very top if at all possible. Even though there are black label owners they are still under giant conglomerates:Sony, UMG, Warner. Maybe more independent labels need to pop up? I just feel like it’s not really fair that artists pay for the sins of the puppeteers. Not sure if Drake is a culture vulture, but it’s also not for me to say. I just listen to so many different hiphop platforms and it’s been a running theme for years now to start gatekeeping the genre. And when they’re talking about keeping ppl out, they’re talking about all ppl who aren’t black Americans. So when the finger is pointing at everyone who is not African American it concerns me. That’s what I mean by a slippery slope. For some reason Eminem has been a favorite target for years and I think that’s crazy because I can’t think of anyone in HipHop that shows more love and respect to the genre and the ppl in it. Like you said, it should be about respect.
