I'll give myself a C+ for these quick notes:
    Basic notes:
    * Emotions don't last; feelings do
Understanding the difference can help us identify and change negative behaviors (for peace)
    * Emotions are physical and can be measured objectively, such as by brain activity, heart rate, blood flow, body language, facial expression.
    * Emotions are hard-wired in our brains and don't differ much between people.
    * How people deal with a shared emotion can differ.
    * Emotions alert you to danger or reward.
    * Emotions come from the amygdala, which is part of the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that processes emotions. It's irrational and illogical. But powerfu!
    * This part of the brain, the amygdala, sits behind the neo-cortex which deals with conscious thought, reasoning, and decision-making.
    * When the amygdala is influenced by STRONG EMOTION, brain flow goes AWAY from the reasoning part of the brain, the neocortex, to the irrational part, the amygdala! This is why we sometimes make terrible decisions when we are charged with emotion.
    * Emotions radiate throughout our body.
    * Feelings are in the head!
    * Feelings are influenced by our beliefs and experiences. So, they're totally subjective.
    * Feelings can vary dramatically from person-to-person.
    * Personality makes a big difference.
    * We have little control over our emotions. But we have much more control over our feelings. And therefore, more control over our behavior. What we say and do.
    * Emotions can be very intense. But they are always temporary.
    * Emotions alert us to imminent danger and prepare us for immediate survival. They give us the energy we need for that fight or flight response.
    * Feelings alert us to anticipated dangers and ensure our long-term survival.
    * You can experience emotions even when you aren't in the situation that is causing these emotions. Because the neocortex knows it's just a movie, for example, but the amygdala doesn't. So you can still get the symptoms of emotions. As if it's really happening!
    * One of the reasons that using what's called positive thinking isn't effective is because we can get on what feels like an emotional roller coaster because of our ability to physiologically feel emotions just from thinking about situations.
    * Just thinking about a negative situation can drive these negative emotions and cause negative feelings. We feel like we can't control it.
    * A way to deal with this more constructively is to try to identify and separate the emotions and gain a sense of detachment and get off the ride.
    * Emotions affect the initial attitude about a situation. If someone said or did something harmful to you, your emotion of anger could turn to the feeling of bitterness or resentment. Then that feeling could linger.
    * If you experience joy, enthusiasm, these are signs you're doing good things for yourself and the people around you.
    * If you find yourself bitter and angry, it is a sign that you might want to evaluate what you're doing and how you are affecting other people.
    * Feelings are created by persistent thought and feelings surrounding the thoughts.
    * Emotions are created by events and situations in your life.
    * Letting go of emotions = letting go of feelings.
    * Feelings are generated by thoughts, memories, and beliefs about previous experiences and can be changed.
    * You can try to ignore emotions.
    * Work on changing on your feelings, rather than your emotions.

Yes, our schools, both here in San Diego and the UK, would be advised to teach some of This, rather than “That”. Now I wonder if I had listened to this at age five, when it was most needed, how much better off I would be now? If it were taught every year as a principal subject, (by a competent speaker as yourself), I would have to believe Yes!
I would say that teaching such as you do, would require the most stringent education requirements, such that Universities would be unable to find many candidates.
I went to school at DeBurgh secondary modern (Tadworth, UK), I was disliked by the Head Master, Dr. Mather (OxBridge U.), he wore his Cape and Mortar - every day. I realize now, that my Mother’s Narcissism helped me to identify his Social Disorder (Narc?), and he sensed it, hehe.
    Cheers from San Diego

This makes sense. I think I’ve always used both terms interchangeably. Emotions seem simple but hard to define or understand. The thing that confuses me now though is that physical feeling is mostly thought so is a instance where we hurt ourselves such as sprain an ankle actually also sensationally based but defined by feeling. If we want to go toilet is it a sensation to want to go. I guess sensation is also different to feeling. So are emotions and sensations similar.
    I’m just thinking about this.

    • @SelfHelpforLife
      @SelfHelpforLife  10 месяцев назад

Yes I would say that sensation is something different, and many people do use the words feelings and emotions interchangeably.

Thank you very much for a fantastic video, Paul! It's very useful! May I ask you please if emotions are generated by our thoughts as well? What exactly starts an emotion? What we think of a situation or event?

    • @SelfHelpforLife
      @SelfHelpforLife  Год назад +1

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes emotions can come from thoughts - for example thinking about a worst case scenario will trigger an anxiety of fear emotion. But a situation or event can also trigger an emotion. For example, being stuck in traffic or dealing with an angry person.

    • @SelfHelpforLife

Beliefs are basically consistent thoughts or ideas that are true to us. We don’t generally question them. However, sometimes new information or life events force us to change and update our beliefs. Hope this helps.

People usually say that don't do something with emotion. How can that be?

    • @SelfHelpforLife

I would say that this is belief that some people have. Emotions can be a powerful driving force for change. For the big life decisions, I would combine objective logic with whether it feels right or not. Hope this helps.

I think that's more of a physical feeling, than a mental one. Although physical symptoms can bring on feelings and emotions too.

Perfect explanation of the difference. I enjoyed your video immensely. I’m experiencing physical reactions to chemical exposure after adverse reaction to Fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Can hypnosis help?

Why is the importance of knowing the difference and when should it be applied.

    • @SelfHelpforLife

Knowing the difference will help you understand yourself better, and more effectively manage certain feelings or emotions as they arise.

@@SelfHelpforLife this would apply only for those that are hindered by those feelings correct? Isn’t it moreso not the feelings, but the negativity that we associate those feelings to mean?

Hi Lucia, perhaps start with the NLP anchoring of swish techniques, Links to these below. ruclips.net/video/yJ9J4PVFzgM/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/JZLaJgdurYI/видео.html. Hope these help.

Since uploading this video, I've come to realise that many people use the words feelings and emotions interchangeably, so its quite possible that other people (and Google) may have different interpretations for the word "love"

    Hi 6-6!

There us no clear ontology of phenomenon. If a counsellor asks me 'how do you feel" I will reply "it depends on what I am feeling, but it's usually with my hands."
But the verb "feeling", writ large, us _sensing._ What I _sense_ (feel) ranges from the wind through my hair, to my balance, to humor of a joke, to the syntactic structure of the sentence I am writing.
As a noun, can I say I like the "feeling" of a warm bath? Is this a different sense if the word than the video describes?
And is the restriction of "emotion" to _physiological phenomena_ standard in the literature?
This video has given me nomenclature (whether standard or not) but no insight.
Though perhaps it's not meant to. Discussion has to start somewhere, and definitions are a fine way to start. It left me cold though.

Hi Bryan, The idea behind this video was to help people understand how emotions are more intense, but tend to disappear more quickly, and how feelings are less intense, but tend to linger for longer. Rather than trying to get a really deep understanding of this, I would be inclined to focus more on ways to change unhelpful feelings. And I have other videos that cover that.

Hi, do you have an email because I would really like to go over certain feelings and what subset category of emotions (Angry, Disgusted, Fearful, Happy, Neutral, Sad, Suprised)?

@SelfHelpforLife - I think there are unclear areas in the distinction between Emotions and Feelings.
    1. I think in reference to the lymbic system kockong in, you had mentioned about intense emotion - how do you differetiate between an intense emotion vs an emotion ?
    2. I am sure you are aware of the classical view of emotions and constructed theory of emotions, your explanation seems to align classical view yet the list of emotions you mentioned dont match truly with what Paul Ekman or otbers have said.
    3. Interestingly, Happiness is a feeling according to you as opposed to popular view of that being referred as emotion, also enthusiasm is listed and is that a lymbic system triggered response to a stimuli ? Also, enthusiasm isnt a reaction but a built up emotion i think.
    4. I see it is the cultural use of language that is influencing your view on how feeling/emotion is understood. We are drawing a line by saying Emotions are measurable, also facial expressions snd other combinations- how do you differentiate between happiness Vs Joy through facial expressions clearly...how would we differentiate objectively between bliss and joy...etc

    • @SelfHelpforLife
      @SelfHelpforLife  2 месяца назад

Since I recorded this video, I've tended to differentiate less between feelings and emotions, and instead become more aware of my thoughts and feeling on a day to day basis. And that has helped me more than getting too bogged down in the differences.
