Is the point really not to succeed but only to begin? Let's consider this from the perspective of *objective reality.* Let's say that climate change is your major concern. If you aren't thoroughly and properly informed, then you are prone to get involved with efforts that have the greatest audience reach, rather than those which have the most integrity. So, for example, you might find yourself supportive of the efforts of the Democrat party, because they are clearly more concerned about this issue than Republicans. You might hear the words of Bernie Sanders and get inspired.
But let's consider the end result of this a little more carefully. The Democrat party has a history, at least equal to that of Republicans, of supporting our military industrial complex. Thought the rhetoric of Sen. Sanders certainly sounds better than many others, at far as the military goes, the fact is that his voting record is ABSOLUTELY NOT consistent with that rhetoric. Though there have been members of both parties whose voting record is very consistent with their rhetoric, almost without compromise, for example Dennis Kucinich, Alan Grayson, and Ron Paul. Sanders is the anti-Nader. He is part of a strategic move on the part of the Democrat party to herd potential defectors back in.
But let's get to the point. At the end of the day, if the results of your action lead to more support for the Democrat party, then you have failed. The Department of Defense is the single largest polluter on the planet. The U.S. superhighway system was built with the military in mind first, not the citizenry, and has helped to push our dependence on the automobile. The U.S. military is estimated to use 320,000 barrels a DAY (not including contractors). During the Gulf War, four to eight million barrels of oil were spilled into the sea. The Iraq War was responsible for at least 141 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent (March 2003->December 2007). Three-quarters of the Superfund sites in the U.S. are military-related. Militaries of the world are responsible for the release of more than 2/3 of the CFC113 into the ozone layer. In all the wars in Vietnam between 1945 and 1982, the country lost 80% of its original forest cover.
I could go on forever. But I just wanted to leave a contrary comment that made an attempt to be thoughtful, more than just critical. JUST SAY NO to compromise with the status quo. The world's richest and most powerful people didn't get there through just their hard work or luck, but through manipulating politics and large groups of people. They are more clever than the average bear.

Her presentation came off as more of a performance than anything else. Her cadence and mannerisms seemed overexaggerated and inauthentic and inspired me to roll my eyes several times.

No... Who you ran against did not own Gas stations; I really pay attention to, invest in and know local businesses.
Did you run when a pediatric physician was running? Who did and still heals children for free? Is that when you claimed they owned a gas station? The same doctor that helped save my life when I was a sick child?
Dont know what you are smoking. Can I have some?
I dont like most of the politicians around here and you could attack more than that. You also might want to mention the percentage of votes. You have never won over 40% of votes. You certainly are better than most people in SLO. Like Adam Hill, that guy is a criminal who needs to be voted out of office. You are genuine, and I respect you for sticking by your guns.
Also, politicians need to stop playing games. I'd never vote for her as a regional representative because she lies about her record and those she ran against on Ted Talks. She is good for SLO. Just not the rest of the region. She would ruin it.
