- It all seemed to be progressing as normal. In the dry, on the mandatory medium-compound Pirellis, Max Verstappen (Red Bull-Honda) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) headed the times in Q2, with the two McLaren-Mercedes lying P4/P5. Then it began to rain. Pirelli intermediates were wheeled into action, neutralising F1's status quo. Even as drivers like Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso rose to the top, however, there was confusion about who was on the pole. It appeared to be Lewis - but then Lando went even quicker. Then Lando's time was deleted for a track limits infringement. Jubilation broke out in the Mercedes garage...then Lando's pole time was reinstated. Through the confusion and the rapid changes in fortune, Peter Windsor looks at the day's key elements.

This is why I enjoy Peter's videos, he has a way of clarifying issues. Suddenly the pole situation makes sense
tbf the sky commentators also clarified this after Norris' time was reinstated
Casual as you like and bang on
After the qualifying in an interview to sky sports, Stella explained that Oscar's car went into neutral for some reason in the middle of a corner and that's why he lost time in his final lap.
Lewis and Fernando have a real advantage this weekend, they have over a decade of Grand Prix distances at this circuit. Hopefully they can take advantage of it.
Lewis and Fernando, the two veterans, show the experience in the wet. Also, good pole by Lando.
taking nothing away from them, but I also think cars with good tyre degs were not able to generate temps for sudden wet quali, hence ferrari and redbull struggled.
@SoapboxRacer makes sense actually
@@SoapboxRacer yes - Hamilton & Alonso showing their incredible experience and skill compared to their teammates. I agree with your point which is that cars with low tyre deg (usually a good thing) will struggle in these conditions.
Hamilton is not on the level of Alonso as far as age/performance goes.
sure mate… that’s why Hamilton finished ahead of Alonso - like he did last year overall and like he did in his Rookie season.
Pete, there has been multiple occasions in the past few years where laps were reinstated….
Stella said McLaren didn’t complain over the erroneous deletion. The FIA realised their mistake and corrected themselves.
we have seen this before. hungary 2022 when perez's laptime was deleted and then reinstated
Lewis never had the pole, he didn't loose it.
It's a TeamLH thing, to think he always gets robbed.
Nah
Lewis was Robbed but not today Lando lap was fire simple
stewards gave the wrong decision then corrected it
credit to the stewards for actually doing it for once
if you knew the rules you wouldnt be stating bs online. Read article 33.3
@@TheFeelhighthen why didn't maxs time get deleted he was two or three cars in front of lando and went off the last corner but his last next lap wasn't deleted which was good enough for him to start 4th?
PW had the old script + he is in romantic love with Hamilton. (and it is a known fact that Hamilton is a rainbow person. Nothing wrong with it. Just come out)
Peter Windsor STORY: A few days ago I had to climb into the attic for some old motorcycle parts. While there I spotted my small collection of Autocourse ( the Formula One "Yearbook"if you will.) The season was 1979 -1980. I had to take a quick look and there on page 30 was the "Formula One Review." The writer was one Peter Windsor (Sports Editor Autocar.). The opening two pages of the Article had a black and white shot of Gilles Villeneuve followed by two pages of color shots of F1 Drivers and Machinery. I remember each and every photo in the book. So there you have it. Much respect Peter.
The stewards made a mistake and then corrected it. Why the fuss? To say that this will echo for a long time is getting hysterical.
It matters! It's about the sport's reputation. No other sport in the world makes such mistakes on the regular/gets their own rules wrong/has arbitrarily applied rules.
The point is, the Stewards always seem to make crucial supposed mistakes when Hamilton is involved. I've never seen a deleted lap be reinstated ever, nor has anyone else. It's very strange.
this had nothing to do with Hamilton, zilch. So what would you suggest they did after finding their mistake ? nothing because 'Lewis'..?
The lap should never have been deleted, i think it is good they reinstated ... for once they admit a mistake and correct it.. there really is no pleasing everyone.
Agree
@SIFWD1 the "mistake" would have benefit him. People just want to complain about 2021 again whilst the world is in 2024..
Windsor's last words will be "abu dhabi 2021", and he will get those engraved on his cript. The man is still living 2yrs in the past.
British bias?
Hardly british bias is it
he just like equality within the sporting rules
Let it go (2021)
Even if Lewis is "over the hill", the hill is so tall that it will take a while for him to "fall" to the level of most others :D
💯
Jeeeez
I think Lewis is just wiser. He won't push the limits with an unstable car. I think he's as over the hill as alonso is. And Lewis is a genuine genetically gifted hand-eye coordination monster, even by f1 driver standards, so it's going to take a while for that to degrade
@@IvanRivera-xb3he he's 7 times world champion, no reason for him to push a dog of a car just to finish P5 at max. If he got a race winning-capable car he might got his spirit back again
Exactly this. He's likely on par with Russell for qualifying now. He's still a monster on race pace. Races are where you score points.
Abu Dhabi 2021? Serious? PW should really stop with this nonsense, it’s getting pathetic…
Lance doing all that setup work
Paid of for Alonso 😂
😵😂
Lol.
Tom Clarkson looks at him with a weary eye and asks: “Fernando, in what way is Lance more sensitive than you?”
Fernando, briefly smiles, then gives a serious answer we all know is bs.
Always fun to hear about Bottas, as soon as you hear his name you know a shot at George is right around the corner. Wonder if Lewis would be leaving if Bottas was still his wing man?
I’m pretty sure Lewis leaving has more to do with Mercedes having a crap car for the last 3 years with still 0sign of improvement than any team mate issues lol Sure he’s in 2nd, but it’s a sprint race and let’s face it, Max in that beast of a Newey designed RB will most likely win…if not this sprint race, then the proper race on Sunday. Happy to be proved wrong, but me thinks it’s Max’s weekend
Lewis is leaving because Merc wouldn’t give him a 2 year or longer contract. Toto only gave him a 1 + 1 because they want Kimi in the car. The shot at Russell was weird considering in their only pairing together, Russell beat Bottas in a car he was new to and Bottas was very experienced with.
It's crazy how the confirmation bias works; make excuses for Hamilton the last couple of years, and once or twice a year hail a single performance as proof of anything.
People think it’s the car that was making Hamilton lap the field but no it’s the car and driver who has skill something max doesn’t have
@@joligramm4255 Max doesn't have skill? 😂
😂
@@JC-lu4se being fast in a rocket ship doesn’t mean you have skill we seen in 21 the first 10 races he ko lewis explain to me how Hamilton came back Don’t say Silverstone because he should’ve given the place back, he went off track well deserved Baku cheated with a psi FIA let him off spa free gift the last five races he got schooled the only way he can get passed is on fresh soft.
@@joligramm4255 No, Hamilton spent his career whining about Vettel and Newey; "their car is so fast" and "it may bore fans". And he did he exact same as soon as Verstappen was winning.
In between he was saying he built up Merc as Schumacher did Ferrari and "it's not just the car".
But that's not even my point, it's that fans will choose specific sessions over the trend and say, "Look Hamilton is still the best", and ignore Zandvoort 2023, for example.
Peter, Oscar had gearbox issues on his final flying lap which is why he was in the pits at the end. He was on a very quick lap.
Thanks Peter. Been waiting for your summary😅
Hey Peter, Oscar's car hit Neutral, when he changed gears, when he was in a very good lap and that was the problem
Plus he was 2/10ths faster in Q2 than Lando in the dry.
As usual, more informative than anything else out there. Thank you Peter.
Great Summary as Usual.💚💚🍀🍀
PW explaining down to most finite detail. Best commentary in any sport, anywhere. Thanks Pete.
my question is inconsistency like what you have mentioned a good thing? I feel like it should be the same for all tracks, regardless.
Would it be wrong to assume that RB and Ferrari had tire warming issues? They should be good on tires on the long run if that is the case. Plus it's gonna be dry for the rest of the weekend as for now. Either way it's gonna be an exciting weekend.
Look forward to the next Episode💪💪🏁🏁
Sulayem saw Lewis/Merc get that pole and just said yeah.. not happening lol, after all the trouble Merc has put me through, pole to McLaren😂😂
Days since last AD21 mention : 0.
It is what it is. The most controversial moment in F1 ever. Pity.
It’s getting ridiculous now. 🤦🏻♂️
@@lebassdesign4850 no, it's always been ridiculous, that's why it will keep being mentioned as long as all of us are alive.
@@dane458it's not. Prost sucking the FIA boss to change the starting grid position to disadvantage Senna in pole was way worse. Because that was not a 'in the moment decision', but was calculated to advantage one Frenshman, by another Frenshman.
@@dane458 if you think AD21 was more controversial than mclaren spygate and Piquet crashing on purpose, you live in a parallel universe where Hamilton is your boyfriend.
Lance's pace is that of a Sunday Stroll
It sure looked like the cars that switch on their tyres the fastest benefited the most in the Sprint Shootout. It obviously won't help them in the actual race.
Yes, I think that’s the McLaren and Merc, but not the Aston. They’re usually slow to warm up their tires, especially in cooler conditions, like the RB.
What a great qualy. Tho if its gonna be dry tomorrow its gonna be easy overtakes for Max on the long straight.
Peter I enjoy the clarity in analysis 🧐 of the Lando/Lewis qualifying times … go to Peter for the best information without clickbait
Hello Peter-first a huge thanks for your erudite analysis of the F1 scene. I thoroughly enjoy your frank and unbiased assessments of the drivers and what I particularly enjoy is your fearless criticism of the sport when poor decisions are made, officials are inconsistent, or team managers are out of line. I have a request which may or may not be in your wheelhouse. As a lifelong follower of F1 I would find it particularly interesting if you could spend some time highlighting the extraordinary level of talent which the current crop of F1 drivers represent. It would be fascinating to hear you describe how far away from us mere mortals these talented drivers are. Their ability to absorb extraordinary levels of G forces, not only when cornering but also under massive deceleration and acceleration as they power out of a corner. We see these exceptional performances on our television screens, but it would be interesting to hear you speak about how different their abilities are as opposed to us mortals.
The comment "Lewis must think damn it's unfair". While both times the initial response of the stewards was wrong and needed to be corrected. The unlapping of the cars could have been done if they started on time just as not deleting a valid time in qualy
Sprint will depend on the weather and how much Fernando resists Max pass. It appears that McLaren, Mercedes and Alonso car are set up for more downforce. RB will add some wing ? and then it will be up to the weather gods. If it rains, I expect Alonso, if it does not rain I expect Max.
It seems that everyone is walking on eggshells when Lewis is concerned. 😅
I have been told the grass was combustable because of something they sprayed on the grass to make it pop out more.
Other people seem to say it's marsh gas ...
I think a sprint weekend should be an extended fp1 or a split fp1
One of the slipperist tracks I've ever seen in Q3, it was nuts. They needed full wets it looked like
Amazing lap from Lewis! WOW!
Two grass fires did they paint some of the grass with chemicals in it?
Loool
They absolutely did ...
Everything’s fake in China…😂 be interesting if this happens in the race and what effect it’ll have on the race..
Probably, they already paint rocks and other barren landscape to look green.
The last corner gravel gave no advantage...
Viva las F1
If those grass fires are anything to go by, teams would be smart to choose strategies benefiting from a safety car. Assuming it's dry weather.

Abu Dhabi 21 was a breahc in the rule, today was Lando lap time getting unrightfully deleted going wide during his PREVIOUS LAP, nothing about that is written within the rules.
Yes, he explained this, as well as explaining the fact that the general rule - where there is NOT gravel on the final corner - is that the following lap will be deleted too.
Rules are rules and the lap should’ve been deleted. Just like lando jump start should’ve been penalized.
@@NotYourEverydayTrav as Peter says though, that is NOT the rules for this track.
@@NotYourEverydayTravthe rules state that the next lap still counts on this track if you go of in the last corner.
show me specifically where in the rules it says at the Chinese gp the rule about this and the next lap being deleted is not valid.. come on people
#44 should be "grateful" he didn't get a grid drop after his shinanigans with Hulkenberg , Locks up trying to muscle his way past only to find Piastri on the apex... Then has the Gall to say Lando forced him off .... The Stewards had him sussed though and gave him a Black and Whits flag for crossing the pit entry line .... #44 IS losing it
the race tomorrow will show ... hope he doesnt take anyone out
This is 0 IQ Comment
And the next race when Lewis struggles to get to Q3 we'll all look back on this race and say "He hasn't lost his touch."
Not a fan of Lando but I'll give it to him that he deserved that lap time , I doubt he could gain anything on his next lap from running out the way he did
Lando goes for it in the wet. He came out on top here, but not so in Spa 2021.
Always come here first for post F1 session debrief. Peter is the most knowledgeable voice of Formula one on youtube. End of conversation
Check out WTF1
I do the same!
When it comes to Hamilton, it is the car not the driver.
I understand McLaren made no representations. The FIA self corrected their own mistake. Bit of a mountain out of mole hill unless you are a die hard Lewis supporter looking for grievance. Great effort by Lando and Oscar could have been there as well accept he had a gearbox problem.
weather and conditions made for a interesting qualifier , on race day when it counts Max will settle the score as usual
Lush green grass will not ignite from sparks. Whatever chemicals were used on the weird track coating ran off into the grass and is clearly flammable enough to ignite from sparks. And that grass is likely all dead and just painted green to look nice.
Oscar could well have been up there with lando he’d set 2 personal bests but then the car entered neutral keep up the good work Peter 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It’s a mistake by the Stewards that’s all. It’s human to make mistakes. Why are people so negative these days. The Stewards have got a hard enough job as it is. Well done Lando.
I disagree I think its a good that the stweards were fast enough to re-instate Landos lap time and realised the error, nobody's perfect
The grass fires are probably because in China when they have dead dry grass they just paint it green and the sparks caught the dry grass on fire
Yup, they paint rocks green too to give the same illusion.
That’s because almost everything China does is cheap. That’s just the way they build most things. Looks like a fun track though. I hope there aren’t five red flags because of fires during the race.
Lewis was beaten by a second for sprint qualification. Then 18th for the race. Yeah Lewis really showed his talent.
Sir Peter Windsor ladies gentlemen. Goat of youtube.

Thank you thank you thank you Peter, been reading articles and seen videos all afternoon about this, still didn't make sense why Lando didn't get a penalty. You explained it all within a minute. So strange because I'm currently doing hot laps in F1-23 on the PS4 and your time ( and the next lap ) gets deleted if you exceed that corner, but without the gravel. What a mess.

the FIA sure love to make things not complicated😂😅🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️🤦♀️
Peter I thought they were not allowed to correct mistakes though? They're supposed have an internal investigation of themselves say its a human error and have the result stand

The man just cannot talk enough about lewis to start. He akways talk about lewis, charles and Max.
Why listen if you have a problem about him talking about Lewis etc, you have the choice of listening some other commentary.
The others aren't worth talking about
normal! top drivers
Who should he be talking about? Lance making it to P20? 😅
If there was a wall there. There would not have been another lap.
The grass fires are happening because they put bitumen all over the track. Rain subsequently washed some of it onto the grass, so now patches of it are covered in a flammable residue, which gets ignited by the sparks. It's not much of mystery

13) Track Limits
In accordance with the provisions of Article 33.3, the white lines define the track edges. During Sprint Qualifying, Qualifying, Sprint and the Race, each time a driver fails to stay within the track limits, this will result in that lap time being invalidated by the Stewards.
It says the same thing in all event notes, yet in most races, the next lap time is also deleted when it is about the final corner. The race notes don't seem to specify this, but apparently this is always discussed in the drivers meeting.
Still China for me is grey skies and half empty stands with a security guard every 6 rows. The track is great but thats it
This the problem with LeClerc. His inconsistensies pop up at an inconvenient time. Round 4 2022 Imola, he did the same thing at the hairpin turn (Tosa) going up the hill and gave Verstappen the win.
Unless Ferarri self sabotage, the inevitable will happen, Sir Lewis will win his 8th. FIA can play these games all they want, people tend to perform better under true adversity. While the other drivers do not face this opposition they slip into mediocrity. Hence this current product.
Sprint is better than a P2 and p3
I mean merc in general wasn't as good as sauber in q2 as Lewis made it in 9th also behind bottas. Obviously they turned it around in q3 getting p2.
Lewis never had pole, so he couldn't have 'lost' it. Lando's lap should've never been deleted, so actually he was the one who had been done an Injustice.
I think it was more due to track conditions Lewis got the position. Let see qualifying and race
Track conditions were wet.
Max had several attempts (let alone in a far better car...)
Anyone said otherwise??? , DTS is the other channel please.

Starting with Lewis it’s Lando on Pole….
LH cult meltdown i love it.
The problem with the fia doing that meant Lewis didn't push on his last lap thinking he had pole, he was the last car out there and it didn't make sense to risk spinning of if you already on pole, so some of you may say it's a simple mistake, but in reality it's not....the fact that the rules were applied correctly for max and other's, but some how when its Lewis and lando involved, al of a sudden a mistake is made, leaves a sour taste in my mouth.....
I agree come race the merc probably will not be competitive, but to jeopardize a drivers pole is disgusting and disappointing from the fia regardless of who the driver is
You know why you have a sour taste in ur mouth bruv? You should stop drinking vinegar ;)
@@TheGympert geez that was so lame I almost laughed, n btw vinegar is bitter not sour, lemons are sour
If he didn't push that his own fault. I doubt he cares that much, because it's only the sprint, and even if he won the main race on Sunday, still has no hope of fighting for a title this year. I guess he wants to finish above Russell, but sprint points are tiny anyway. It might be different if we were talking about Silverstone or Monaco, but who cares about Shanghai?
@@Ruylopez778 I'm not so concerned about Lewis or Mercedes, thier car is a disaster even if Lewis got pole it would not matter come race day, my irritation is with the damm fia and thier inconsistency and hypocrisy, they take away credibility from the actual competitiveness and integrity of the races and teams, f1 is the only sport where the rules chop n changed depending on the mood of the officials ,
@@himeshmothi1605 The only time a driver should stop pushing in Q3 is if they make a mistake that loses them so much time it's not worth continuing. You're trying to claim this impacted the result because of it, in order to make it a big deal. It's not. You're exaggerating and you're wrong. Sure there is an element of inconsistency, but mostly the situations are not the same, it's just that fans want to whine about it. The teams have very little integrity, they regularly lie and cheat, as do the drivers. They misrepresent events in order to manipulate the media or governing body in their favor.

Boohoo you big baby! Get over yourself…………….
Exactly. When Max wins his 10th title some you tube channels presenters will be on suicide watch 😂😂😂
So basically the FIA didn't follow their own regulations about the Chinese gp track and deleted Lando's lap, only to realise 'oops, we're in China and the rule is different here' and reinstated it. this sport is so unserious sometimes.
A few things. Firstly, the actual rules (as in, the things that are in the sporting regulations) are quite broadly worded and do not state that a lap time must be deleted when track limits are violated. They describe what is consider proper driving and staying on track is one of the thing a driver should always reasonably try to do. The rules also say that lap times may be deleted or grid drops may be imposed if drivers infringe against the rules. The fact that the current lap and the following are usually deleted if a driver goes off track in the last corner is because it potentially gives the driver an advantage to do so. But this is not a rule, but rather an interpretation of the rule that is discussed with the driver prior to each event. In china, due to there being gravel next to the last corner, it is obviously not the case that the driver gets an advantage for the next corner, which is why the rule is applied differently.
