I'm a lot older than you Oompa but you're right. I was 15 when Late Night with Conan O'Brien first aired and it was amazing. I used to stay up extra late on school nights to watch that show and when it ended, the downfall truly began.
Steven Colbert was at his peak when he was on Comedy Central along with John Stewart and John Oliver. That was pretty much my entire teenage years, I recommend watching all of those shows.
When I heard he was switching over to host one of the Tonight show things, idk which one it's called but it all sounds the same to me tbh, I KNEW he would lose his funny edge and guess what, HE DID! I stopped watching him when he made the switch. And then I refused to watch anything from him after he promoted the vaccine.
A lot of comedians have to tone down their comedy when on late shows. Gotta be ad friendly and try not to offend anyone. Now with podcasts and youtube/twitch everyone can deliver the same content without the restriction which kills comedy.
The problem with Colbert switching to network late night is that he made his name playing a particular character on Comedy Central. His taking over a late show would have been like nabbing Michael Richards to take over the 12:30 p.m. slot, not realizing that fans like Kramer but not Richards.

At every juncture, Conan deserved better. I truly think he is the best of the bunch, but he got a raw deal again and again, and somehow managed to take it in stride with class as a total professional. So many people could learn so much through Conan.

Imo, by the time Conan went to TBS he had crested a late night genre/version of his. It cannot be replicated by anyone else simply as it revolved around Conan. While the best late show host - a more traditional late night style - hands down Ferguson. That man was a true natural comedian and a best kind of host for the genre. Chill, funny, smart, and absolute beast with his charisma game.
