Sly was just making up numbers. The tax will cost each adult resident $100 annually. He said he “thought” he read $50. Just goes to show how little accountability and factual information the yes side is prepared with.
There is so much wrong with this tax idea. A no vote only will assist all parties to re imagine this whole idea. The crossroads is already populated with viable businesses. History tells us that parking alone is a nightmare. The royals need to take a deep breath and renovate the already magnificent Kaufman stadium.
In 1968, two big stadiums were built, they were supposed to have a nice cover , now you want new taxes, I say NO. The current stadiums work well, are plenty big. Lots of parking. The teams produce millions of dollars, use your own money to build stadiums, we the people are taxed to death currently.
The Yes side looked and sounded ridiculous with this and could not respond well to the fact that people are calling out the Royals and Chiefs for an abusive partnership.. Jackson couunty and KC and its region has supported these teams very well throughout many good and bad times yet both organizations act entitled to billions of dollars with a vague plan and 2 world class facilities currently
Exactly they started this whole thing with threats of leaving and even if it passes the Chiefs are not signing a long term lease extension. Let the Royals take their loser team somewhere else and if the Chiefs don’t appreciate their fans bye bye 👋 it’s been nice 😉
Have they priced going to a baseball or football game for a family 😂 do they think the royals or Chiefs will lower ticket prices for Jackson county residents 🤔
Agree. For ppl like me who watch this issue from afar, media has pitched it as voters saying “no” to billionaires. It’s clear to me that many “no” votes are due to the arrogance of the teams rushing this issue to the ballot behind threats without executing the necessary leases & agreements. Also it’s amazing how all these new stadium projects allow the owners to become retail & restaurant landlords in the name of helping the community. Federal law needs to step into this process because no local govt should be allowed under law to sign off on this deal until all agreements are signed. The CBA is going to be a pain & push up costs. Again the law should step in & require all CBA proposals to be public because anyone can smell opportunists behind some of it who are going to make the real money acting as administrators handing over a little cash.
The parking downtown prices is so outrageous and scarce. For instance around the Courthouse, City Hall, Police Station and the Federal Building. This is insane the street car is not going to service for free with the influxes of people.
Sales tax effects low and middle income families far more than high income households. With property taxes increasing drastically on homeowners in KCMO, inflation, etc., why hang this on those without the means while the wealthiest avoid all responsibility. I have been a big advocate to having a downtown ballpark since I moved to KC 18 yrs ago…however, the location will effect longtime businesses negatively (demolish them) and why did they not use this as an opportunity to connect 18th and Vine and east crossroad’s by putting it in the relatively unused space between the two neighborhoods near the KCTA is located. This would be repurposing city land and benefit those east of the stadium for real, not just the lip service she gave about education and training (they know it’s not a deal for minorities in our community). There would be an entertainment district on both sides of the stadium and displace less. Voting No for so many reasons and it’s unfortunate they made bad decisions to get to this point.
Such a relief this was voted down. It would’ve destroyed one of the most unique and creatively vibrant parts of Kansas City, where artists and musicians have been creating the culture that makes KC so unique.
Tuohy’s right, they’ll come right back to the negotiating table if this vote fails. Sly thought he was disproving it when he said they wouldn’t go through this if they wanted to leave. Exactly, so they’ll want to continue to negotiate.
Though I'm a big sports fan, if the Royals can shell out $288 million on a 11 year deal for Bobby Witt Jr and the Chiefs $450 million over 10 years for Patrick Mahommes, it appears to me that both these sports franchises are quite financially well off to build their own new stadiums ... However as a reasonable compromise between the private and public sectors, I do think the KC taxpayers should help out both teams with road and water/sewage infrastructure related improvements in support for these proposed new sport entertainment projects ...
Get a Royals championship team in focus and the stadium tax issue will be "persona non grata"...I would like the Chiefs to re-structure and expand GEHA Arrowhead stadium so that the SB can be hosted here in KCMO...
27:58 Sarah Tourville needs to learn how to connect with her audience when faced with any kind of crowd. She either hasn't learned this important business skill yet or she simply doesn't care how she comes across. She doesn't seem to understand being empathetic. Perhaps the Royals need to find someone else to head their front office. Someone that understands these.
The biggest issue is that neither team is willing to sign a long-term lease!!! There is still $200 million owed on the last stadium improvements for the teams. No local govt anywhere in the US should be allowed to do this deal with teams who haven’t signed long term leases. The teams are being very arrogant here & threatening to find a desperate local government who will throw $1.3 billion towards them with no contract on obligations nor a lease. The FBI should be investigating the teams negotiations with other governments. Frank White has the integrity to simply make the teams sign a lease & have definite agreements FIRST. The teams are wrong here.
Sly James referenced the 49ers Levi's Stadium as an example that has generated positive cashflow for Santa Clara. He failed to mention that report he was quoting was commissioned by the team in response to severe community backlash about the team's failures to keep its promises made when begging for public funds and for failing to generate the financial benefits they lead the city to expect. Or in other words, Sly James wants you to know that the 49ers say the deal was good for Santa Clara while Santa Clara itself deeply regrets the deal.
Sly saying. "Now my grandkids want a new place to play ball." Just feels gross. Like ok you pay the tax. Kaufman and arrow head are our pride not how many championships we have not how many super stars we have.
25 years ago there were no people down town. . . Yeah and the business owners and the people of Kansas city changed that. Not you. All sly wants Is tax. That's all and he will say anything to get it.
What is KC without sports? A bunch of suburbs in the middle of nowhere that nobody outside of KC would know or care about. KC needs the teams and downtown KC needs the Royals. This is a major fork in the road for the city and will change how the city grows for the next 50 years.
People like that Becky Nace is the reason why I moved my family away from that city in 2009. Moved to Houston and would NEVER move back to KC because of the mindset of people like her.. this is not the 50’s

Renovate the already beautiful stadium “For the Future!!!” I would vote YES to that.

50k tickets back to the city in the nose bleed section. But the team wants a 3/8¢ sales tax for 40yrs and no foundation in writing.
Nick was a great moderator
Sly James is a joke.
Threats pay 💵💵💵or we leave bye bye 👋

Vote Yes so us on the Kansas side can enjoy a New Stadium.

I can’t imagine, no royals and chief in KC

Who is paying Sly James? I presume he is not doing this for free.
Anything that has Sly James as its poster boy gives me pause.

15:58 What an excuse.
So out of touch with the audience.
No no no. No more money for billionaire toys. Pay for it yourselves or get out.
The kc royal need to prove that they need to be in kansas
Wow....that is a No Kaufman stadium will be renamed

Are you kidding? Didn't you hear all the nice things she had to say about Sherman?

As one who attended I agree that Sean and Becky were more effective and Sly the effective orator was for once ineffective
Bye Felicia!
32:00 Every building every where is detoriating!
That's such a stupid argument...
The tax is for 40 years. The leases won't. There is no way the stadium will not require upgrades before the 40 year mark.

100 a year that's two tickets to a game that we can't afford any more.
lol lots of cities want the worst team in baseball 😂
They aren’t the worst. Yeah they are bad but not the worst.
Sly saying. "Now my grandkids want a new place to play ball." Just feels gross. Like ok you pay the tax. Kaufman and arrow head are our pride not how many championships we have not how many super stars we have.

KC Tenants being very annoying.
I appreciate the Royals want a new ballpark, but why don't work on building a good franchise.
Vote yes!
