The truth of Penacony, as it turns out, is that it’s not a trap… it’s, like, twelve traps piled up on top of each other, with seven-ish competing factions scrambling to shove each other into them without getting themselves caught. After all the anticipation this arc has built, I have full confidence that this gambit pileup will *deliver.*
Yeah, so many parts, so many internal strifes, this arc is going to get intresting, especially with the obvious hints given in the 2.0 livestream.. it’s going to be a chaotic time I feel.
Yesssss with so many factions with their own agendas and the nameless the literall only neutral party, like its gonna be a crazy ride

Something of note to mention I haven’t seen anyone say is that “If I can stop one heart from breaking” actually contains the first 8 notes of the title screen motif right after the 2nd chorus which in my eyes signifies the Trailblazers impact on Firefly and how much we actually meant to her despite our short time together

My ears immediately perked because as far as I can recall, there aren't a lot of tracks in HSR that use that as opposed to Genshin's use of its main theme, though correct me if I'm wrong.

I just knew this was coming.
Penacony almost immediately breaks away from any of the would be concerns about its story that the slow burn of the Luofu introduced. The dark yet bright nature really speaks to the two-faced nature of the planet. (By the way, this is our major running theme. Masks and hidden faces. Check it out, its a very frequent occurrence, both with our Playable Characters, NPC Quests, an even the world-building itself.)

So, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "Troupe" playing the song is actually the INSTRUMENTS, which have a life of their own and (as they mention offhandedly in the show) are merely "working along with some humans" for the sake of the show. IIRC you get introduced to the Troupe as they perform a street show during a tour we get of Penacony in-game. I think they also mention that the instruments sometimes get violent and have to be settled down. lol. 😅
Yes, the instruments are called that in game! I didn't realize that the implication was that the ones in the stream were supposedly the same ones. I guess that's what they mean by "the Iris family"
In-game, the Iris Family is actually a bunch of actors (as explained by Firefly, who introduced herself as an extra from them). So we can safely assume that the Troupe is playing itself while the people on stage are just actors pretending they're the ones playing, lol
"Wait I think i left the oven on actually" and "Oh yeah I don't have an oven, I live on a space train" took me out

penacony has been firing on all cylinders and im so surprised at how good everything about it is. fingers crossed that the story sticks the landing
I feel like Penacony is taking a lot of inspiration from the 1927 movie Metropolis, including the music. Especially when you hear the instrument choices at the Reverie Hotel and Golden Hour.

Would love your take on the Something Unto Death/Meme boss’s theme song. To me it feels like the payoff to the eerie feelings present alongside the wonder in this main Penacony theme. It’s all the tension and chaos of being chased down a dark alley after leaving the Main Street.
I would love to do a video on that track! I won't have time in the near future but I think that track is truly fascinating.

this video really got me thinking about how to apply this one recurring theme to the lore of Penacony that we now understand. it might be long but for anyone who is interested and up to date on the story is welcome to read it. i marked it into sections of spoiler free to minor spoilers to heavy spoilers.
so i really like how they managed to work this motif into other tracks just like the people’s motif in Belobog. a great example is “City Upon a Hill”, where it’s expressed with an angelic choir. it’s one thing to head that half-step movement from an instrument, but from a choir? they go from sounding consonant, to sounding dissonant, and then back to consonant again, oscillating between the two. they are darting around in perfect lockstep, almost as if they are myriad beings acting upon a singular will, an angered swarm of bees defending the hive. they don’t sound harmonious so much as they just sound orderly, almost to an ominous degree.

“City Upon a Hill” was what the Pilgrims said they wanted to build in the New England colonies, as a beacon of righteousness for the world to gaze upward toward. but in hindsight, we all know the dark reality of their endeavor. the Family is said to build high walls- yet the Harmony is about compassion for the weak and taking in all who lack a place of belonging. isn’t that hypocritical of them? but the results of the 2.0-2.1 story quest have shown us that the Family’s high walls aren’t intended to keep anyone out, but rather to keep them in.

As we have found out in the 2.2 main quest, the Family are not actually followers of Xipe the Harmony, but followers of a fallen Aeon known as Ena the Order. Penacony’s sweet dream, created from a Stellaron and the Remembrance’s memoria on a former IPC prison planet, shaped by the Trailblaze working alongside followers of the Elation and Enigmata among others, taken into the custody of the Harmony, this place has been influenced by so many different Aeons that its no wonder so many factions were invited to the Charmony Festival. and now we have a new Aeon in the mix.
as many lore theorists have surmised, stellarons tend to take one aspect of a planet and exacerbate it to an unmanageable degree. Jarilo VI’s Preservation manifested as a blanket of ice covering the world and “preserving” it through stagnation. the Luofu’s Ambrosial Arbor grew from the stellaron, upsetting the balance between the Hunt and the Abundance. and now Asdana’s history as a prison planet is resurfacing, manifested as the Order betraying the Harmony, turning the sweet dream into a birdcage.
what is the difference between harmony and order? it’s the same difference that makes music more than just a series of arranged sounds. it’s the same difference that makes dancing more than just series of deliberate movements. Robin is a true follower of the Harmony- she sees people’s lives as a melody. to best help them is not to interfere with their lives, but to conduct yourself in such a way that fits within and adds to their lives, the way a harmony does to a melody. to truly help someone from a selfless place is to connect with them as an equal, not to view yourself as above them. Sunday, as a follower of the Order, believes the best way to help people is by preventing them from doing anything that could potentially harm them.
you can see all of this reflected in the music, and I want to say that your videos have changed the way that i view the soundtrack. Hoyo is great at storytelling through gameplay, and it makes sense that they also use the game’s music to tell stories as well.
For me, the theme that plays before and during when you fight "Something Unto Death" goes really hard. Hope you have fun exploring Penacony!
I am a massive Owl City fan, and the theme when you're in the Dreamscape sounds very similar to a main throughline in many of their songs. I was already convinced on Penacony just playing through the story before hearing that theme, but it just stamped in my heart a deeper appreciation for Star Rail. It's truly a unique experience to be playing a free mobile game that, within a few months of launch, has a rich story, beautiful, varied soundtrack, and memorable characters.
Once you are done with the main story I would love your take on both "return of none" and "nevermore" which are some of the most interesting tracks of the patch
I have a lot on my plate and won't be able to return to this for a while, but I've listened to those tracks and I'm VERY excited to see what story beats they're tied to

it really is amazing to me how hoyo-mix was able to take Penacony’s OST (at least for the Reverie and Golden Hour areas) and make me feel like i’m actually at a real theme park! like if anyone here has been to a Universal’s Islands of Adventure park, the OST really reminds of the music playing at the Port of Entry there and evokes the same feelings in me of excitement and wonder 💖💖

My first thoughts upon watching the cutscene of the (female) Trailblazer free fall into the Dream World was, quite literally, “Welcome to Wonderland.”

The real Penacony was the friends we made along the way (like literally)
We got a fucking ship hell yeah
Shaoji's appearance has put people at discomfort knowing he has been the lead writer (I assume?) for Honkai Impact 3rd's Elysium Everlasting Arc, which as each acts of each chapters unfold, the characters involved were slowly getting killed off. It's as if we got PTSD seeing his face on that dev stream lmao. He did also say in one of the HI3rd official videos that the [game] has a positive and wholesome story.
This is just the beginning of Penacony, I can't wait for its secrets to unfold. More deaths will surely follow.
Nevermore is my fav tbh its perfect for the occurance it plays in.
I believe that Penacony really is jail, but mental. Since they sent invites to even major antagonists ( Stellaron Hunters, Duke Inferno, et al ) they are probably aiming to catch all that would hinder the expansion of The Harmony and allow Xipe to absorb everything
Hoyoverse's musical team is amazing, the progress they've made from pretty good to capturing the mood perfectly. Sumeru in genshin Impact felt like a turing point. The step in quality was noticeable, I feel like thats the moment they truly found their grove and settled in.
And im glad to get experience these moments that are only made better by a soundtrack that goes so hard!
Coming to this video after your wildfire analysis. The storytime at the end of this video gave me so much more to think about with Penacony. Great stuff!

Having gone through as much story as we have for Penaconny, I am PRAYING we get another "From Embers to Wildfire" like buildup for Penaconny's story. There's a TON of musical depth to the world so far, and I am confident and hopeful that we get a deep musical connection with whatever the heckin' final boss is.

When you travel in the dreamscape. As you progress into the story it's like diving into the deep web. Even the Veteran Memokeepers know the dangers and risk of it. And the actuality of it is a real power struggle between so many factions that happened to get invitations to converge in one place. The literal first part was a full build up.
I'm not spoiling on who "dies" but I know they're pulling a Wildfire level build up after.
There was an in-game song mentioned by Firefly, where you stop on the rooftop with her which plays on your date with her. "If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking" which was also sung in game by a Songstress. Can't wait for your take on that one since there was something haunting on how they set the ambience and the build up to that moment, and the moments after that date.
Excellent Video as always by the way. I like hearing about the beauty of music theory interlaced with amazing story writing. I for one firmly believe that the OST makes or breaks any scene from any game.

You have to do Penacony's Main Story with its OSTs and Songs! It would be a sin not to. The 2.2 patch just concluded and it was WILD. You can wait until the Main Story concludes in 2.3 though but you absolutely have to do it! "If I can stop one heart from breaking" and "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" especially!!! The way you interpret the musical numbers and soundtracks just speaks to me in so many levels and I'd love to hear your take on how the songs/OSTs were arranged for this planet!

Wildfire was something I really desire for in Genshin right now. Penacony might be what I loved in Genshin.
Wildfire gave us a most definite victory. We fought against fate. We won. Bronya lost her mother, but she gained her future. Javrilo VI gained a future.
Meanwhile Fontaine was a Victory clad tragedy. We worked hard to try and help. To uncover what was hidden. Find a way to stop the prophecy.
We did not find anything. Focalors was the sole orchestrator. The hero of that story. Yet she dies combat fate. It left me feeling empty. Not unhappy with the story I witnessed by all means but... I felt helpless to do anything when all I could do was watch someone else rise to the task I wanted to do and then I could not even save them...
Penacony might be a Victory. It might be a tragedy. I am wary and excited at once to see what will be.
