It's not the first whirlwind romance episode; we've had Girl in the Fireplace and Voyage of the Damned, which are top-class episodes. I only say that because people accepted that, but I have a feeling people will challenge this one. I loved this episode, but didn't care for the villains, but Groff and Gatwa were amazing together.

Excellent review but, for me, Rogue was the blandest episode of the RTD2 era so far, and I rarely felt engaged. Although the plots are different, I get a similar vibe from the Davison story Black Orchid which, like Rogue, also feels like a period drama with the Doctor and Companion(s) crowbarred in. It felt as if a script originally written for a totally different show had been repurposed for Doctor Who, at least on first viewing. I'll give it another go later today, and I'll bear your comments in mind :)

BOOM was written by Steven Moffat. This is the second episode not written by Russell. I agree that I would like to see a greater variety of writers.

Late to the party, but really enjoyed it. Thought the plot was nice old school Doctor Who, the kiss was lovely and I adored the Duchess. What’s not to like? Another great, honest review from you, again, Matt. And yes, great haircut. 😊

The problem for me is that it doesn't feel like the doctor.
If Ncuti was playing a companion as a young black frisky gay man it would be fine. But the doctor falls in love over the space of about an hour with somebody who was going to kill him and he doesn't know it's all a bit strange.
The doctor isn't behaving like are the dimensional super being who is thousands of years old. He is behaving like a 19 year old gay guy who's just discovered grindr.
And it's not that people are homophobic it's just it's not Dr Who.
It would have made much more sense if this was a side line for a companion and the doctor was busy trying to solve the mystery.
This doctor is pretty crap he does nothing other than cry and doesn't really ever resolve anything.

I'm just gonna copy and paste a comment I made under a different review (this series gets so much better with every episode, but this was 11/10 for me):
To me, this episode was even more, to me it was the biggest peak since The Doctor Falls, and that says a lot considering how long it has been since that. Especially after The Doctor Falls being, in my opinion, The peak of all Doctor Who. This episode moved me as much as that, albeit in a different way. The plot, the setting, the villains, the acting, the cinematography, everything was perfect, but what really made my heart cry out with joy was the way this episode mastered the ''If you watch this beautiful masterfully done romance between these two persons who both happen to be men and go YEW, there is something painfully wrong with the way you think and it's about time you started minding your own fucking business and letting go of judging people who aren't you and want and deserve to live a happy life as anyone'' aspect of this soft revival. Last couple of years I've slowly started to notice and be aware of how much hate still prevails in the world despite the fact that we generally are moving the right way. And this episode made me feel it all and yet, at the same time, I was excited by the pure joy of watching this amazing plot and romance unravel. This episode was the true guns out and went full on the ''let's just move on from the stupid human obsessions with gEHnder'' bit while doing it in the best way possible. This is how it's supposed to be done, unlike the whole Rose plot in the 60th anniversary special (painfully poorly executed). Episodes like this set the ground for the future where white straight cis-gender people have moved on from, well, the stupid human obsessions... In the far future, this episode is bound to become thought of as merely an amazing Doctor Who episode with a brilliant romance plot and nothing more, but as of now it's ground-breaking. Dot and Bubble achieved this also, being very nicely executed, but this episode really made me feel it.
But all the current world problems removed, this episode truly is remarkable as the Doctor is finally given, maybe, a chance to get a boyfriend who is so much like him in many ways, they're like soul mates. Of course it wouldn't be as impactful if it wasn't tragic in a way, with them being separated, but he is bound to find Rogue somewhere down the line and I really really hope they will stick with the couple travelling together for some time.
And for people saying that the Doctor is asexual, well, newsflash: he hasn't been asexual since the movie and the 2005 revival. So many romances.. Rose, Madam de Pompadeur, queen Elizabeth I, River for god's sake, Captain Jack sort of and whatever happened with Harry Houdini etc....

I was pretty surprised to see the Fugitive Doctor in there because I thought her character was the only interesting part of the Jodie Whittaker era. It would be interesting to see what RTD does with her if he brings her back at any point.

I thought it was the worse episode of the series so far. I didn't like the flirting and the kiss but even if you take that out. It was a bad episode. The doctor and Ruby weren't together much. Episode felt like a filler episode. The doctor still don't have an Identity like the 10, 11, 12, or 13 doctor. Maybe if this was one of the first episodes of the series it would of been better.

    It's just a kiss!
Id question what 'proper' Doctor Who is tho. It's your perception but Doctor Who is always evolving and changing. Go with the flow!
I loved this episode too. Not my favourite ep but I think they are all good.
Groff and Gatwa chemistry was off the scale!

I also have been completely disappointed with the disconnect I’ve felt with the doctor this season, he hasn’t been given many moments to show off his personality, THIS is the episode that made me feel close to him and start to understand what kind of doctor Ncuti’s doctor is. I feel like this episode may have been better if it was placed earlier in the season to begin the audience’s relationship with the doctor

Also I felt like with Rogue and the doctor there were a lot of parallels to the doctor and Rose which I love with all my heart

100% NOT the best episode of the series.
100% BRILLIANT that they gave the Doctor a male love interest. Finally! Not even Jodie got a guy!

I am not a fan of period dramas like Bridgerton etc so I wasn't really looking forward to this episode to start with.
I don't feel there was a 'change the Doctor's life' moment in there unless something comes up in the future.
I liked Rogue or what we saw of him and the romance and kiss didn't bother me as we have seen similar happen in other episodes except not maybe the 'gay' part. The woke brigade are going to be going out of their tiny little minds over it which amuses me no end 😂
It was an ok episode just not one for me. I will probably rewatch just to see if it grows on me but at the moment it sits with girl in the fireplace a good episode just not for me.

I enjoyed the episode very much overall, BUT the "owl" aliens were absurd and not in the least bit scary. Plus.....OMG, The Doctor cries AGAIN. This is getting REALLY tiresome now. To have The Doctor cry, like, once in a series is actually rather nice, and a good evolution of The Doctor's character.....but having him cry in like three episodes (or is it four) in a single season? Hate that. As far as the kiss, didn't bother me in the slightest, although I personally think The Doctor should remain non-sexual. NO, I do not think this was the best episode this series. Rogue is not anywhere near as brilliant as 73 Yards or Dot and Bubble (or even The Devil's Chord). I did enjoy it though, in spite of the damn crying again and the ludicrous owl aliens.

The kiss reminded me of how I felt after discovering QAF a few years ago. The plot didn’t matter anymore (how I felt about it at least) because I loved the love element haha

Yeah man, this wasnt a good episode. Poorly written, boring protagonist. Lazy antagonists. Bridgeton cosplay shape shift fans like what? Very lazy. Just a gay romance episode with a bit of scifi. Not a Doctor Who episode.

Another Awful episode. Basically a rip off of human nature & family of blood.
A family, shape-shiffters, period setting, invisible spaceship, take over the world.
    Except this was awfully written.
