I Had A Bad Day i attended one of his clinics in Australia when DT were touring, he only did one short solo and literally had to be coaxed by the promoter to play a second song. When he talked all he really did was moan about being compared to mike portnoy while trying to promote his new book. When it came time to sign stuff, he literally signed what looked like the McDonald’s logo on the drum head I gave him, and wasn’t interested in engaging any of the fans who paid to see him, in idol chit chat or pose for photos. By comparison I met mike portnoy with the rest of DT at a meet and greet some years earlier and portnoy was way nicer to all the fans and more chatty. In short I agree with your sentiments, he’s a cool drummer but not particularly cool as a person from my experience
@@robd3529 maybe he was just tired.. considering he had been touring for years nearly non stop w/ DT and doing clinics, and meet and greets like nearly every day as well as shows. Maybe he was under the weather or exhausted. Cause everytime i've seen him, he's chatty, very nice and approachable. I've met Portnoy a few times too and to me he usually came off a little arrogant. Nice, but cocky..
@@robd3529 that’s really interesting because I met mike at Petrucci’s guitar camp and he was really one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. I talked to him for 20 minutes about drum stuff at the bar
He did a clinic at a store where I taught back in 99 or 2000. He the most wonderful clinician we ever had in the store. He and then Pearl rep Doug Smith took the store owners, the bass tech, and myself out for a meal and drinks. It was one of the best times, and highlight of my life. Mostly because the rep and us from theatre knew each other for years, and Mike fit right in like he had known us forever. It was a wonderful experience, and if our oaths ever cross again I would be forever thankful.
Not a real creative drum solo. Big PA, lots of facial expressions, sounded like a Rush song during intro. Not impressed. Y'all can jump on his band wagon, but I ain't... Utah Kid.......
His solos are way more versatile than others drummers out there. Mangini solos are quite good actually. Well... You never saw it live right? Sounds huge live.
