Staples could run this ad every back to school season and it would NEVER get old. Absolutely hilarious!
I totally agree!
I’m a great grandmother and this brings back many loving memories
Does anyone if it's the same company which showed the other commercial where mom bought the school supplies but she puts on the roof, while she's praising about learning, she doesn't know all of the supplies are flying off the car??
Literally my mom reenacted this commercial for years after it came out. Love this commercial. 🤣🤣
😂My dad always reenacted to this scene whenever my brother and I had to back to school too. He did this for years after we saw this commercial came out 🤣
My mom trolled my brother and I every year with this!
Hated this commercial when I was a kid. After I graduated high school, I couldn't stop laughing at my brothers when they got all mad about going back. Good times. Thanks for posting.
U aren't the only 1. I hated it myself! So did a chap from Chesapeake, VA named Brendon Tillet, who submitted it 2 the Bug Squad in Zillions Magazine. I thank Brendon 4 submittin it! U can, too, since U hated it! The Bug Squad simply made fun of ads that "Bug" readers who submit 'em. The way it made fun of this 1 wuz:
Girl, thinkin: I could just die! I've NEVER been SO embarrassed! Our own father, dancin around like a wack-mobile!
Buoy, thinkin: PLEASE don't let any of my friends see me with him! I can't wait to go back to school to be with normal people!

@@dead1812 i feel you
Looking back now, I miss school. You forget how easy you had life then
I felt like stabbing myself and slowly dying of oxygen to not go to school
My dad never laughed at any commercials, he found them plain stupid, but for some reason he absolutely loved this one when it came out. apparently my brother and I had the same faces when we went shopping... good times now that I am a parent myself!!!
This came out when I was a teen. I'm 40 and I still love this commercial 🤣🤣
i am also 40 dad would snicker when the commercial came on tv being a teen and in 8th grade i totally had the mood those kids had i mean i like sleeping. i was always yawning in school. and ok i did fall asleep in class a few times in high school usually was during fun movie time(not educational) some of those times i had realized i had been ill. i do remember once i think junior year someone had to legit wake me i didn't hear the bell ring. thank god i woke or i would have had to call an irritated mom to pick me up as i would have missed the bus. i never had car go to school i couldn't drive i mean i did do some when i took driver's ed but i have a lot of disabilities and also once i was 20 on a bunch of meds i still am they do not mix. i am sure at some point fam and i be showing this to my nephew. just want see him get through kindergarten first
Even as a kid, I loved this commercial to bits. There's just something about how deliriously happy the father is contrasted against the kids' misery that struck a chord in my sadistic little heart.
Well said. 🤣
I was just saying I bet every kid hated this commercial. 😂🤣
Same. 100% same.
Facts!!!!!😂😂😂😂 Dad is just LOVING it!😂
Yes...😏
As a marketer myself, this commercial is absolute gold. The brand is front and center. Everyone knows - and more importantly, remembers after seeing it - that it's a Staples commercial. It's a creative approach, gets your attention right off the bat because no one expects to hear a Christmas song in late August. It makes you laugh. It showcases their products. It positions them as the premier Back to School resource. And clearly it has staying power - here I am 25 years later, looking up this commercial on RUclips because it actually IS the holiday season and I still can't hear "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" without thinking of this commercial. Bravo, amazing work.
Lmao same here, anytime that song plays around Christmas, my mind immediately goes to this commercial.
I'm not a marketer and even i can tell that this is a quality commercial.
You are absolutely correct. A marketing genius ..I hope the person who came up with this great idea got a helluva big raise..
I work at a Staples. The irony of your statement is that there's one Christmas song that for some reason never made it off of the playlist and plays year-round in the store. It annoys the hell out of me.
@@Mr.Obongo That same song now plays for an allergy company throughout the spring/summer, although it's still playing into August, and I can't help to think of this ad that signaled the end of daylight extending into primetime TV, but the promise of cooler weather ahead even if its still hot outside. It's sort of like how in Super Mario Bros, the "time running out" music goes off when you first hear it, this time regarding summer vacation.
This commercial tormented me as a kid... Now as a parent myself, I laugh hysterically; Almost like a maniac when I see it. 😅 I'm glad I found it. Showed it to my 10 and 16 year old and they cringed. LMFAO!
One of the greatest commercials ever!
As a kid I hated this ad. Now as an adult with a kid in school, I love it lol!
my lil nephew is going to kindergarten this year bit early to show him want him to think school is fun i mean kindergarten usually is at least. i got him a back to school gift has few fun things he loves jurassic world found pack of 2 folders for JW at dollar tree. actually this first year in school for him is going to have my mom and i really lonely we even found out he has full day, my mom usually has him during day during week while my sister works. the 3 of us be bawling not sure how we hold back tears so lil man doesn't start. he's never been to pre school or day care. since pandemic happened during most important time in young children the socialization part. so he bit behind there he's had times to go to playground but not always kids to play with or they are too young or too much older than him. he's a wise butt too makes me wonder what he will be saying in school. luckily during summer he's played at the playground at the school he will be going to which is my and my sister's old elementary school grade 3 to 5.he is supposed to go with his mom for a tour of the school day before first day hope he will be less nervous. i still got one more thing to get him and that is to let him pick out a cool t shirt.
Update? Is the little person now 6 or 5?@@tinabastarache2674
I absolutely felt this dads joy. “They’re going back!” LOL.
Finally a back to school commercial where they don't force the kids to be happy
Exactly!!🤣
The best part of using a classic Christmas song, when the children slowly walk into the camera frame. Always loved it.
I love this commercial I wish Staples would continue to use it!
My mom is a teacher. I share this with her every august. She hates me lol
I'm a retired teacher. This is the ONLY back-to-school ad that didn't make me scream; in addition, it's the only time I've ever enjoyed this song.
I miss this commercial. It's so funny.
This is one of the best TV commercials ever made. Really deserves a CLIO.
I didn't realize this commercial was old. I remember seeing I thought not too long ago. Wow 1996
RIGHT???!! This was such a GREAT commercial.
it was actually 1986
@@penelopepittstopP no its not they ruined a perfectly good song, your insane.
I think it was probably reused quire a few times over the years. The "that was easy" slogan didn't come around until the late 90's or early 2000's. I distinctly remember this commercial originally ending with their older slogan, "Staples: yeah we got that."
I think it was redone with "new" kids some time later, but with the same holiday song.
Literally the best back-to-school commercial of all time.
because of how smart they were now everyone goes to goddamn staples
Sorry, but the back to school commercial with Alice Cooper tops this, but just barely
I may have to look for that, from Mr. "School's out for summer"
No kidding 🤣
I promise I watch this video EVERY year...(with my kids of course) and every year I love it!!!!😂🤗
This was their best campaign!! I FOUND IT 😂
One of the all time classics.
My father played this commercial for me, now I play it for my kids, and God willing, one day they’ll play it for their kids.
A timeless classic.
I come here every year and play this for my daughters..just so I can see them have those same faces I had as those kids back when I was 12 and this commercial came out..now I know how my mother felt when she did it to me🤣🤣😂🤣..one of my most hated now loved commercials of all time
Hated it as a kid, but love it as a parent!
Naturally, we all served our time, now it's THEIR turn.
I was a teacher in 96 and I loved this commercial. Some of the teachers felt the same way, 😁
Same here!
This commercial is 100% accurate
Except I had friends at school. What’s not to be proud of learning?
The funniest part of this commercial -- the only commercial I've ever seen that is not only humorous, but funny -- is the outfit the dad is wearing. Those shoes. Those socks. They illuminate the joy he feels not being young, not being a kid anymore.
One of my favorite commercials of all time
This was my Daddy's FAVORITE commercial!
i love how much dad energy the guy has. he's the daddest dad i've ever seen
When I was a youngster in the 1970's, I would always cringe when the first Back-To-School ad would come on TV. I related to those kids in the Staples ad. I often went to summer school and then summer camp (which I also hated) because my parents were trying to keep me busy and supervised. I wanted to play around the house and watch movies and cartoons. I never understood how the kids in the clothing ads were sooooo excited to show their new fashions when they went back to school. Didn't they understand? This was BACK AT SCHOOL! Some ad writers must have thought the same thing. This is my "Jake from State Farm"" Back-To-School commercial. True genius!
Shared this with my kid...just now!
The commercials today lack the simplistic creativity they had in the past
I so agree
I play this EVERY year for my kids at school time
This commercial is way better than most back to school commercials today!
If I remember correctly they actually had little checks lists at the front you could pick up based on what school you were going to and what grade you were entering.
I freaking still love this commercial. Totally epic 😂😂😂
It's 2022, and this commercial will NEVER STOP BEING HILARIOUS! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wish they would bring this one back it's a classic just like the Hershey kisses "We wish you a merry Christmas "
its the most wonderful time of the year with the children complaning and teacher all saying there homework is here its the most wonderful time of the year
I loved this commercial 😁😄
My grandson had ten days out of school due to his cold and since technology we are still in this COVID-19 period my grandson had to stay out for the whole ten days he's going back to school on monday we played this video to him and he had a fit but boy is his mom and I is ready for monday smile
It’s stay in Quarantine time here at home
This makes me laugh every single time that i watch it!!! Incredible!
I could relate to this commercial growing up because I didn’t always like going to school either!
My father loved this commercial. He thought it was the funniest one because he could relate to the dad in this commercial. However he said the kids faces were the best part
Oh, man! From '96? Where does the time go? I'm sending this to my 17 year old niece! She'll be all smiles........😒
I know I couldn’t believe it was way back in 96 it doesn’t seem possible, but still a very good commercial
@@donnageorge3730 wasn't 1996 the time Nintendo and Sega existed???
You know a commercial has done its job properly when people who aren’t even in the same country that it was released in can remember it.
Jake at State Farm has had unexpected staying power. How this hasn’t had the same impact is beyond me. The absolute greatest ad ever produced. As others have said, it NEVER gets old. They should remaster this in HD and air it every August in perpetuity.
My mom loved this commercial back in the day lol
Sang this to my kids on first day of school at the bus stop, now they sing it to their own kids... LOL
Best use of that song EVER!
LOL almost 30 years later this is still hilarious.
Just showed this to my kids , they cried 😂
That look on those two kid's faces.
Priceless 🤣
This was my mother's favorite ad
Anyone else hate this as a kid but love it as an adult? If I ever have kids, I will show them this.
I love this commercial this is the time when adults can reclaim peace of mind lol
The kids are like oh man we don’t want to go back to school
This will never be a Christmas song for me again.
No kidding. I hated this song until I saw this commercial recently on youtube. Now it doesn't seem so bad.
@@Lesrevesdhiver if you hate your kids that much put them in a orphanage
I remember this commercial but I didn't realize it came out in 96. Wow.
I love watching this commercial in August 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The children are so relatable.
Yes they are😆
My kids said I was that guy. I worked 3rd shift back then and got real sleep when school started. Haha
This was pure Gold.
Man, I didn’t think this commercial was that old! I’m sure I saw it more recently than ‘96. Thanks for this - I showed it to my 7 y/o who goes back to school tomorrow! She totally identified with those kids! 😈😈😈😂
Best commercial ever!
HIT ME! HIT ME WITH YOUR CAR!
JUST A LITTLE MORE! I WANT YOU TO REALLY HIT ME!
Alli!
How'd they now how I feel whenever it was back to school?
Nice yeah me too
My absolute favorite Staples commercial. The dad is just perfect!!! Love the look on the children's faces. Would love to know their names, but this is just a fabulous commercial. Love it, love it, love it!!! :-)
I used to call my kids into the room every time this came on and they would always cry! Classic commercial!
Just think: Those two kids in this commercial probably now have kids of their own and they probably do the very same dance that their dad is doing in this video every year when back to school time comes.
My favorite commercial of all time! (one of them) LOL
Disliked this song as a kid. Love this song as a parent. Amazing how perspective changes when you grow up :)
I think you mean the ad, not the song. The song is about Christmas. They just used it for the commercial.
Just showed this to my 8th grader 😂😂😅
I loved the autumn term! New uniform, bag, books and pencils, new form/room and subjects, no exams for a while 😬
You are going into year 7 too?
This commercial goes out to all of the kids
The Nostalgia Critic needs to review this commercial for his nostalgic commercials review in November!
This commercial is hilarious, especially at the end when the father has his legs in the air when the cart goes by!
One of the most funniest commercials I never forget it
Thank you for posting this !!
I think about this commercial and smile every couple of months for decades it's so funny !!
My wife always said that the next year they should have followed it up with a mom doing pretty much the same thing !
All the Best !!
My dad told me. To watch this and we laughed so hard
I think this is one of my favorite commercials...I can remember my mother saying "Oh God..summer again" & could never understand why...then I had my kids & I felt her pain...
I could have sworn I first saw this commercial in around 93/94 while watching nickelodeon. Always sent me into a mild rage. I think I hated school more than the kids in the commercial.
If you think you hate school, you've obviously never met me...
This commercial wasn't only used by Staples. In Canada it was something else. Notice how in the actual commercial they don't show any Staples branding.
Love this commercial. Needs to be brought back
Yup
I remember when this ran for the first time, I was 13 😂. Now having my own kids I play it for them every year 😂
I swear staples has the most creative back to school commercials lol
Awesome now that I have children!!
I remember watching this commercial way back in 2006 when I was a kid! They would air it on nickelodeon and such!
How cruel! Lol
Been 20 years since since I saw this on Shark Week. We recorded the show once on vhs 📼
@@Poemi10304😂😂😂
...PRICELESS!
You have to love it
whos watching in 2020? and totally relating!
They need to toss masks, hand sanitizers, and clorox wipes into the cart.
Gotta love it.
Absolutely charming
Irony is those same kids are now joyful parents glad they have peaceful daytimes
Those kids are millennials and we are all poor and voluntarily childless lol
This commercial (like the children seen in it) would so crush my spirit whenever I'd see it as a kid! But you do truly appreciate it's humor once you're older for certain though! L.O.L.!
One of my favs LOL
My childhood memory right there! lol
I used to not like this commercial as a kid. However now I find it hilarious
The worst part was this would air like August 1 and there’d be 5 more weeks til school started and I’d just get so annoyed. I still can’t grasp they start school in the south in early August.
This really was an iconic commercial.
