Hi Mat! Thank you so much for your video..I'm a single woman and just bought my own plates..AND I'm going to fit them myself 👍👌!!! Your video was clear and helpful..good job💖💖
Wee tip if you have a curved front bumper.. if you heat the back of the numberplate slightly with a hairdryer whilst holding it in the other and it will bend in the middle to your desired shape making it fit better..
Thank you I’m 65 on my own now and never had to this job before. Nice clear instructions.
No worries 👍
Thank you Mat. Have just acquired a car and new plates and your method looks super easy even for a single Great Gran who's not as strong as she used to be! Here goes first thing tomorrow ...
Good luck 👍
I'm going to use this technique to affix my new French number plates to my (ex-English) car. My neighbour had suggested I needed to drill holes but I'm so happy I don't have to do that. You have a very reassuring voice btw! :)
I already attached my new plates to my car yesterday afternoon with sticky pads. But literally 3 hours after doing it it started raining. And it has been on and off since then, atm it’s quite heavy. I’m worried this will mess up the tape since it didn’t get time to bond fully and make them more likely to fall off
Edit: they’re completely fine. Very solid bond
great clear advice mat-love it--I,ll get right to it tomorrows with enthusiasm and double sides tape-lol Wish me luck
All you need is: 3M VHB 5952
This version of 3M's double sided tape is very high bond. Stuck my plate to my bumper as if it were screwed down, no way it's coming off.
Which width did you go for?
@@iTzzNaomiOx think it was 19mm, go with what you feel is the right width
Just bought myself a private plate, can’t wait to get the plates on using this method, cheers
Have fun!
Really useful video. I have some private plates to fit. The old plates were attached with Velcro and id like to remove this Velcro from the car. Any tips on how to do this please?
Thanks for the advice Mat, very much appreciated. Plates Are On, Really On, Gwych! 👍
My rear number plate fell off, I have some of my late husband's double sided tape (he was a motor mechanic)
The tape is at least 8 years old, will it still be ok to use?
Or should I chuck it out and go to Halfords?
Thanks for a great video
Great video. Do you have a link to the tape that you use? I've used this method once before but when the tape got wet over time the plate started to come off
Good solid advise Mat. Thanks for sharing.
No problem at all 👍
I've just re fitted mine with this sticky tape (fell off yesterday) woke up this morning and it had fallen off again. Any tips?
Great video. I'd have guessed most of it but the alignment tips were very helpful
What brand of double sided tape did you use ?
My car has holes drilled in the bumpers as current plates re screwed on. If I use your method, can I just stick the new plate on over the holes or do they need filled in?
Stick over the holes.... Should be fine as they are only small anyway
Cheers!
What tape are u using ?
I had a number plate, White plastic a little bit of transparent. I applied it using double tape but the tape is showing from the number plate. What should I do to now see through the number plate?
So you used 3 sprays: 1.Detailers 2.All purpose 3.Tar remover
Correct? Cheers
Someone please help??? My front private 4D number plate has fallen when driving. So I lost it and found the back plates about to fall off too.. I don't want to screw them in. What can I do? What's the strongest tape I can use? My mechanic used the same tape on this video..
Was the bumper and back of the plate perfectly clean prior to sticking on? Make sure there is no wax or ceramic on.
Thanks... Super helpful!
Glad it helped 👍
Hi mate what tape did you use , don’t want them flying off
Just some 25mm double sided tape from the local motor factors.... Just make sure both surfaces (bumper and back of plate) and super clean and dry for best adhesion
@@TheDetailingSpace have you got a link for it on Amazon mate ?
My car has been ceramic coated, will it still be ok to use the double sided tape?
Many times here in Greece the traffic police removes license plates for illegal parking (+ticket), if you ''glue'' them on the bumper and not fitted with screws (so the policeman can remove them with his own tools) then except the ticket they call a car-crane, they take your vehicle to their garage so you have to pay for each day that stays in plus the initial ticket plus the obligation to remove the plates by yourself and give them to the police for some time.
It's a nightmare that's why the Greek drivers never attempt to ''glue permanently'' their license plates.
Damn! 😮
most canadian provinces do not issue a front plate at all....... here for tickets you pay when you renew your registration.
@@boydlafrenie7120 : What's the logic behind to don't have a front lisence plate?
Tbh, I'm all for it. The US varies it's rules state to state on whether you need a front or not. Even in the UK, bikes don't have front plates..... I'm all for ditching them tbh
@@TheDetailingSpace : In Greece, motorcycles have only one number plate and a back. The cars must have a front plate so: the policeman can see the numbers from the mirror while he is in the patrol, he can see the plate as your car approaches the traffic police-block, the camera at the toll booth reads the front plate numbers, in case of an accident those who are witnesses turn their heads backwards so they can see your front licence plate etc.In case of a ''heavy'' parking ticket the traffic police ask you to give them both front-back licence plates and if you get caught by their eyes on a trip with only the back licence plate ''you set the alarm'' to the traffic police to pusrsuit you.
I bought sticky pads with my plates but I’m so nervous it’ll unstick, I’ve got enough for 5 pads on front and 5 one back
Cheers mate 💯👍👍👍
No worries 👍
Hi if I have a bike rack can I take the number plate off the car and put it on the bike rack?
Yes. In fact, I'm sure that's what you should do. Or leave the plate on the car and have a second plate on the bike rack.
Thanks
No problem
Sticky pads should be only ever be used. Keeps the plate looking clean this way.
Say no to screws
Exactly. Nothing worth than screw (even with cap heads) ruining the clean look of a number plate.
@@TheDetailingSpace exactly my thoughts. I haven't used screws in the last 10 years at least
Very helpful
Glad you think so!
Hi there, which brand tape do you use? Thanks
3m
@@TheDetailingSpace Do you know which 3m double sided foam tape it is specifically? They do a few different kinds. Thanks.
Edit: I've ordered 3m VHB 5952
Will this work fine with metal pressed plates?
Should do. I used to have pressed metal plates and held them on with strong velcro so I could take them off at shows and put show plates on.... Be warned though, you will bend the hell out of them come removal time
@@TheDetailingSpace cheers will give it a go now.
So many cars I see with screwed number plates, even those who have gone to the effort of a custom plate. I did use sticky pads on my last car, but for my current one I used a screw on holding frame, gives a different look. I found the front metal plate needed a lot of pads for it to hold.
I saw a car the other week (Merc I think, may even be neighbours) and it has 4 screws holding the plate on
@@TheDetailingSpace Merc's have 4 screws holding them on (I have a C Class) total overkill and guess what?. The Merc holes have a different thread from Standard fit number plate screws. So you either cross thread and hope for the best, buy their fittings (at the expected premium i might add) or drill new holes or fit with tape. Use the correct tape (like the one you prescribe) or Gorilla Mounting tape and you won't have a problem.
🤣
Thanks mate!
No problem 👍
Hi Mat,and jobs a good un.saves messing about with a screw driver and drilling holes.looks alot neater.
Cheers fella 👍
Thanks 😁
Had my number plates stolen, buying new ones... What is the name of the tape please or where did you buy... Like asda ?
I bought it from a local motor factors. Think it's a brand called "Pearly Wotnots" or something.
How do you get them off when you want to change car
Pull them and hope nothing breaks 😂
Run a floss behind it
@@ranchanbala2463 or with heater
Mahalo from Honolulu Hawai'i 🙂
I’ve just bought private number plate came with sticky pads just frighten they will fall off
Stick it on with plenty
I’ve put on now thanks
No problem 👍
I’ve just started out this week with cleaning so I’m asking loads of questions when I’ve washed car and it’s all dry when it’s rained does your car get water sport from the rain
Depends. You may get mineral deposits from the dirt that's in the rain. Water spotting that you may be thinking of is usually from washing the car and not drying after. Usually if you're in a hard water area.
I can't decide. 🤦♀️ I'm afraid the quality of sticky tape will deteriorate over the years. Then I'll loose the license plate somewhere along the way.And the sticky tape will leave mark.
well mark will always be hidden behind plates
but Im afraid of faliling off to, during winter etc, or during speeds of 200km/h r so
The absolute 🔔 ends who put the last number plates on my car didn't only just screw then into the holes ALREADY there they made TWO NEW HOLES at the very left and right hand side 🙃🙃 absolutely fuming. Oh yeah and to top it all off they also stuck them on too with sticky pads 👊💦 I'm just tryna put on my new plates on my own 😭😭
Screwed on number plates are awful. Nothing worse than taking off a number plate and there's about 35 other screw holes in the bumper. I use velcro these days
Agreed 👍
Wish we could use double sided tape on a bike
👍
"literally"?
?
Lol center point
thanks????
How can i remove it from my car its stuck
Try a hair dryer to gently warm it and soften the adhesive.
Thanks I will try
Good luck 👍
Did you manage to get it off? Any tips please?
I know this comment is a year old but for anyone on here wondering, you can use dental floss or fishing wire. get it behind the plate and use a sawing motion to cut through the adhesive!
