The veritas is a re-make of the Southington Hardware Company, "Hold Fast" sliding bevel. It was made in steel and wood stocks, a few sizes of each stock. I bought a few on the bay. Bridge City Tool currently makes a similar design.
I enjoyed this video, but (believe it or not) my favorite part was your discussion of pencils! A subject seldom broached in woodworking videos! I, personally, am a Ticonderoga kind of guy, having a nasty habit of breaking the lead in mechanical pencils! On the bevel subject, I too have that Shinwa aluminum version, but strangely enough, it’s never been used for woodworking! As a welder, I had gotten very short service life out of the wood bodied bevels commonly found in the big box stores. Wood and hot steel aren’t good playmates, but the Shinwa aluminum unit did swimmingly well! It’s still in excellent condition after 20 years!
Hi Tom, I’ve always been a pencil geek, I like Ticonderogas too. For your mechanical pencils, try out the Pentel hi-polymer leads, you can get them at office supply stores. As for the bevel gauges, I can certainly see how wooden gauges wouldn’t hold up under a torch. Best regards.
Hmm those cleats at the bottom of the legs are a great idea, might steal that! A staging area for tools is something I'm trying to get used to as well as clearing up clutter, this video is full of a ridiculous amount of great tips Ken. Nice to see the wood spirit watching you haha. Thanks for the video, loved it as always!
Hi Clint, the cleats help a lot. For staging, if I didn't have a nearby work surface I would use a small cart with wheels and move it around as needed. I've seen others do this. Yes, the wood spirit never blinks! Best regards, Ken

Question, I am going to be building my workbench, do you have a site where I can go to get some good plans and ideas for workbenches? What wood would you record to build it out of? Hi Jason. My workbench was inspired by an article written by Bob Key. It’s made from construction lumber using basic hand tools. Power tools, if available, can speed up the process. treebangham the Japanese tool boxes are now on my Christmas list for grandkids. They will love them. Also the other boxes you had to the right of them caught my attention as well. Clearing my garage and making a proper workbench are tops on my list, after I stain the deck this week 😫

Thank you for your kind comments. The Japanese tool box might be a good project for you. It requires few tools and develops basic woodworking skills like measuring, marking, sawing, assembly, etc. The locking wedge is optional. You can also experiment with a variety of finishes, and, in the end, you have a useful tool box! If you have any questions about the construction of the box, let me know and I will help you. @@treebangham Yes , the Japanese box no glue and simple may I do that just to practice but I have questions if u may : 1 _ Can I use normal nails hard to find cut nails where I from ? 2 _ I don't have a plane like that to make tounge & groove ( plough plane ) to joint boards for the bottom of the box ? I know I can glue the boards as normal or just get a complete board for it 🤔 but my question is can I joint the bottom using a rabbit plane or it will be a bad joint ? I recently purchased Stanley 78 ?? thanks 😊 .
1 - Yes, you can use regular nails, longer is better, make a few test joints to see which pilot hole works best. You can even use screws if you want. 2 - Yes, rabbets on the bottom boards would make a very nice “ship lapped” joint. The Stanley 78 would work very well for this. For some strange reason I cannot get the video to play on Samsung TV, Apple Desktop or iPad? They all play others vids just fine but this one just spins... I have a sliding bevel gauge with a wingnut that extends beyond the edges. This makes it completely useless ... I'm making a wooden handle for it instead and will add a finger screw.
@@treebangham By the way, having several sliding bevel gauges is a great idea! I hadn't even considered it, but it seems obvious after your presentation (and, yes, I'm new to this channel, otherwise I would have seen you use all those in the tool tote build :^) I've subscribed. Sorry, I have no templates. The overall dimensions are 32” high, 24” wide, by 8 ¾” deep. The drawer “box” is 5” high from the bottom. The lower concave ellipse starts 8” from the bottom and is 3 ½” wide (that’s half the total width of the full ellipse) by 15” high (half the total length). The upper convex ellipse is 3 ½” wide by 9” high (again, half the total width and length). I did some tweaking to get the ellipses to “land” where I wanted them to, so you will have to make some drawings and adjust accordingly to your liking. I used ¾” thick radiata pine. I hope this helps.

I cut a 3x3 mortise in my bench top to accept a white ash post with a forged planing stop. Glad to see y’all Ken. Looking forward to more projects.
