How utterly fitting and beautiful that a man’s vision of the afterlife and “ paradise” is simply to be in his own home again, with his family waiting for him.
It is most certainly true that. But there is another thing that coincides perfectly: in Ancient Rome, Elysium was believed to be an immense, beautiful, sun-kissed place with green fields where only the Gods’ favorite souls could go and live the afterlife in peace and harmony. The Tuscan countryside (where it was filmed) is easily one of the best resemblances to it. And if you add to that Maximus’ wife and child were among the Gods’ favorite souls... that’s a bingo. I think it is a bit of a combination of this idea and Maximus’s home.
So many upvotes but no comments. I use to think the most powerful moment was watching him be reunited with his wife and child. Maybe it was the closing scene. ‘Now we are free, we will see you again. But not yet. Not yet’

The most moving thing about this heroic epic is not his inevitable death, which underlines the tragedy of the main character again, but that at the moment of his triumph, his complete vengeance, he manifests a complete disinterest in this world and his desire to be with his family in the hereafter unite, revealed. No fame, no honor, no wealth, no power, just his loved ones.
Well it’s the fulfillment of his wish to Marcus, to be with his family. While he did want revenge against Commadus, he ultimately just wanted to be reunited with his wife and son, which is the part of this movie that really makes it bittersweet.
What we do here echoes in eternity. If we believe that, our desire also will be greater for the afterlife than this life. “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
he had no reason left to be in this world, his life was dedicated to have justice for his murdered family and once that was achieved he passed away, in a way this reminds me of the crow movie, where eric draven (brandon lee) is unjustly murdered alongside his girlfriend by a brutal crime boss and the crow brings him back from the realm of the dead to right the wrong that has befallen him and once his task was completed his soul finally found peace
I'd say that is incorrect. When his thoughts of the afterlife are interupted he thinks about Rome. About his honor, about the legacy that was Rome and the word he gave. Even in death he was dutiful. So your comment about his disinterest in the real world is completely wrong. He still possessed a presence in life, which he dutifully attended to, even when dying. Upon death, his duty was finished. He could now rest.
I always cry watching this scene… the older you get the deeper it touches you. If you wanna know the real definition on how to be a man, and principles like honor, strength and loyalty, ain’t no better movie till this day. It’s so powerful that it even makes you a little bit less scared of death after watching it
Reminds me of the current Presidential election --- Biden will be carried off like a hero of America, while Crooked Donnie will lie there alone like a piece of roadkill
I fear that for the moment, our society does not value manhood. We shall have to rediscover it when another country attacks - or be swept from power. But such is the cycle of humanity. I am only sorry I live now, when so many have grown soft and weak and America - the America of past - is sinking.
Charlie Mike thankyou, I was thinking this exact thing. We in the west are attacking our masculinity, deeming it toxic etc. hopefully soon we can return to the stoicism of years past. “Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.”

This scene is one of Ridley Scott's greatest achievements as a director. This film totally caught me off guard in the early 2000's. Still makes me weep.
This was the first "adult" movie my parents let me see as a kid. I watched it with my Dad. He told me it would be a movie I would always remember. I was around 10 years old then, and he couldn't be more right. This movie still has an impact on me 20 years later.
This scene was the greatest cinematic experience in my life. I can still remember how everyone in the movie theater just sat there in silence with tears in their eyes. It was like you were actually sitting there in the Colosseum. Chills!
Between this, Pearl Harbor a year after this, and Lord of the Rings, nothing comes close. I never saw matrix trilogy in theatres or fight club so I can’t speak to that.
I'm a dad to two wonderful sons and about to have my first daughter. I never understood why my dad cried watching this scene when I was a kid...but now I truly understand
As a father I get it. The thought of anything happening to my boys crushes my heart. Getting out of my truck and walking into the house to my boys yelling "daddy!" Is the best feeling. There's no place like home and I love that my kids grounded me. I just want to be with them.
I feel this scene so much. Maximus did everything right and stood for everything good. He avenged his murdered family and saved everyone from such an evil emperor. I feel his death so much. He was so tired and ready when he passed. He was ready to go home being happy knowing he fought the good fight and be one again with his family in the afterlife. That is what being a man is all about.
You should check out the anime game asuras wrath, dude gets killed multiple times to avenge his traitor god friends who killed his family and siphoned his daughters powers for 12,000 years
I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such a well done death scene. You’re sad, but you want him to move on to a better place with his family. I love how he goes in and out of reality, and you can see the look in his eyes...so powerful.
@@-Muhammad_Ali- the way they died from the soldiers was horrific. It was comforting to see this scene of the little boy running towards his father and she's shielding her eyes from the light as he runs. PERFECT.
His spirit starts to leave him, but just slow enough to let him communicate as Emperor, and order his men released and Senator to be reinstated. When Rome is safe, his spirit finally leaves. Truly rewarding scene for viewer.
We spend most of our lives trying to get what we want and thinking about what we lack, but in the end, Heaven is going home to your wife and son. It's a place on earth. You already have it.
I watched it when I was 13 years old, now I’m 33. The best movie ever. Regardless how materialistic life today but nothing will ever outweigh nobility, dignity, honor, integrity and decency. That’s why this movie remains so good even after 20 years.
No other movie ending can compare to the beauty and magnificence of this ending. I'm not crying because he died, I'm crying because he achieved his goal and got to rest with his family.
the way his face changes from 1:00-1:10, being abruptly pulled from peace back into the real world, is absolutely astounding. the whole scene is cinematic perfection
Crowe is absurdly good in this film, and to think he despised the original script. Every scene featuring Maximus pulls me into the immersion like I was _in_ the damn room. Every performance here is magnificent but the winner of the lead actor Oscar was a fair pick for once, somewhat rare for them.
Drifting between two worlds........his journey on the mortal plain almost complete. If you knew with 100% certainty that the world to come beyond death was Nirvana, who would want to stay?
Always loved Lucilla's speech. The way she says "honor him", Such charisma and natural authority. The same Maximus had. They recognized themselves in each other.
I think I understand the point behind "Go to them now." Maximus, being a highly decorated officer in the Roman Empire, was still a soldier at heart in this scene. As much as he wanted to be reunited with his family, he still felt like he needed to be relieved of his duty by someone higher up.
@@BestScenes1 True. At the beginning of the film, the Emperor basically told Maximus that even though the war was over, he was still in service to Rome be it a general or his chosen heir to the throne.

I remember seeing Gladiator with my dad as a kid and before my dad passed away, he prepared me in order to face his death through this film. So that's why Gladiator is a meaningful movie to me, I apologize if I got emotional.

His passing was bitter sweet. He was reunited with his son and wife. Maximus to me is fictional character of bravery, honor, and strength. Commodus remained where he had fallen... Good.
He didn't unite with anyone. He just got death. The whole thing with the visions for his family was just for the public to remind to it what he had lost and how precious it was for him.
@@trinitikorneli2750 wow, a bitter cynic. You probably not experienced happiness, or you have no sense of dignity. Probably in a few years, you might be dead in a lonely part of the world. Pity

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
Here's the version more appropriate here: My name was Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the North. General of the Felix Legions. Murderer of the false emperor, Lucius Aurelius. Father to a wonderful son, husband to a loving wife. I had my vengeance in this life. Now I can enjoy the next.
The concept of home, eternal happiness, friendship, and honor all tied together to make this a masterpiece. Never fails to make me tear up since seeing as a teenager when it came out. They don’t make movies like this anymore.
The premise has some similarities to Ben Hur. In both a good and powerful man loses his family and is turned into a slave by someone he knew and is betrayed by. He gets his vengeance though. Ben Hur though is more of a religious movie obviously with a character more suffering with inner torment. Both are sublime movies.
+Ölvedi Richard Clarification: Actually Klaus Badelt and Lisa Gerard wrote 'Elysium' - which is all the music from the beginning of this clip up until Lucilla says, "You're home." After that it's Zimmer for 'Honor Him' and then Zimmer and Gerard for the Juba scene and the end titles.
"A General who became a slave, a slave who became a Gladiator, a Gladiator who defied an empire." "There was a dream that was Rome." Such a powerful lines. Never fails to give me goosebumps.
Quintus, free my men. Senator Gracchus is to be reinstated. There was once a dream that was Rome, it shall be realised. These are the wishes of Marcus Aurelius.
I just watched this movie for the first time and I ended up crying. I was not specting to get emotional but i did. Such a really good movie even after 24 years this will be one of my favorite movies...
"Quintus. Free my men. Senator Gracchus is to be reinstated. There was a dream that was Rome. It shall be realized. These are the wishes of Marcus Aurelius."
To me, this movie is about the value of ethical, charismatic leadership. Maximus could have betrayed Senator Graccus, he could have just stayed a gladiator and gotten rich, he could have gone in a million selfish directions. Yet, he knew he was going to have to die. And he went ahead and did what he did anyway. And that's leadership. It isn't about having the big office and the fancy car. it's about standing in the door for the people who rely on you, it's about taking the hit when you could have just as easily blamed it on a subordinate, it's about having to endure pain and suffering and humiliation for the greater good.
Kevin Gilligan Russell said the movie is about death. And some have said they knew Maximus was going to die when they saw the wheat in the beginning. I love how Maximus doesnt let his pain destroy him and he 'comes back'. He got back on the horse.
I remember when I was about 8 years old my brother was watching this movie and I walked in at the ending and I was mesmerized by the scene and music. Here I am 13 years later and recently watched the movie in its entirety for the first time. There’s so much to say… ‘Now we are free’ is such a beautiful song and sometimes I’ll just listen to it and imagine the last scene of the movie. It brings a heaviness to my throat and tears up my eyes every time. Truly a masterpiece. Braveheart is the only other movie that has gotten the best of my emotions.
So powerful the end scene. Especially with the music. ‘He was a solider of Rome, honour him!’ You actually feel like you are one of his men watching it! Great film!!!
Lol, people comparing Birdman, a movie about Broadway actors, with an historical movie of epic proportions. How can you even compare the journey of someone like Maximus with any character of Birdman. Nothing in today's life compares to the challenges ancient heros were put through.
Even Quntis ls like "I'll get his feet". There is before you watch the full movie, and then after; it will change you for the better for the rest of your life.
If this movie were based on a true story, including maximus decimus meridius being a real person, there would be statues all over the Roman empire or in what is now known as modern day italy. Narcissus would honor maximus, everyone would honor him, he would literally be a real life fucking legend and hero, one of the most iconic figures ever in Roman history would've wanted nothing but to just go home.
My father passed away 4 years ago and this was one of his favourite movies. I still remember when one day, we were watching this scene and I don't know why but it was in english ( I'm italian) and when the guy at the end said : " We'll see u again but not yet ", my father asked me what did it mean in italian. And now that he's gone, I do say those words to myself thinking about him.

The part, " Was Rome worth one good man's life? We believed it once, make us believe it again! He was a soldier of Rome! Honour him! Who will help me carry him. Everyone carrying his body while they leave the defieted empirer lying there like voltures prey. The respect they had for Maximas, without him demanding it, he demanded respect just by his presence. The last minute of this is so emotional. The dialogue, the score, and when it zooms out to show Rome. Such a well made movie overall. I wish movies today were made like this.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad as a kid. It was the first time I genuinely saw him cry. I must of been about 12 or 13, but I remember crying during this scene, I tried to hide it & checked to see if my dad was looking at me because I felt embarrassed. Upon looking I saw my dad was also crying & he just leaned in and gave me a hug. To this day I cannot watch this scene without tearing up. The writing, acting & music in this final scene totally deserved the Oscar it received.
As a father of a little boy. I feel it. It makes me cry like a little baby. I couldnt imagine that, anything happen to him or to my wife. I would probably die. ❤️ One of Best movies ever.
I cry at the ending every single time. When he sees his little boy running to him and he walks through the field. There aren’t many movies that get me emotional but this one does. And then the final scene with Djimon Hounsou. He says it perfectly so that it sticks with you long after the credits. Great movie.
I come back to this video every few months and it reminds me about being humble, he was a simple man, respected by his men and only wanted to go back to his land, son and wife. And like many of us, gets caught up in other things... makes me think about how those things can either ruin us, if we let them, or create us and how theres always something worth fighting for. Great acting, great inspiration, great emotions, always enjoyable to watch.
I’m turning 41 years old in January. I remember seeing this in the theatre back in 2000 and to this day it still reduces me to tears. What a movie. What a General Maximus was. What a masterpiece ❤️
It's truly something. It's been over twenty years and as I watch this now I still feel a sense from it, an always evolving one. My life has grown as we all have, and Gladiator has with us. These are the wishes of Scott and all those involved. I hope everyone of you who reads this or not is well and is happy. We are together, always.
4:16 i love this scene. Maximus being carried by a senator, praetorian guard commander, and his loyal troops. Escorted on both sides by fellow gladiators and the praetorian guard. And then there's commodus on the bottom left, being completely ignored and left to bleed on the arena ground.
Loyal 😂 if they were so loyal why didn't they do anything about maximum getting stabbed right after he fought even tho he still won nobody really cared about him except that old man that died other than that he really died because he got betrayed by Lucilla and his troops

I don’t care what anyone says, when this movie first came out, nothing hit as hard as that final scene as he enters the afterlife. I’ve seen it so many times I’ve almost become numb to the initial feelings I once had for it. Amazing.
Yes, so many of his movies have a lot of weight to them. Alien is more of a very tense horror movie but the Duelists has quite a powerful and unexpected ending, Blade Runner is just beautiful, and then this....
I’m 5’6” and I saw this in a theater when it came out. The huge man next to me wept here. I passed him my napkins without a word. Masterful storytelling
I feel you but from one short guy to another, be confident in yourself and don’t feel like you need to mention your height all the time. Yeah girls care about it (a little) but some girls don’t care, trust me I know. And the girls who don’t care, will only date you if YOU also don’t care. Otherwise you make it awkward. It’s like if a girl had small boobs… some guys don’t care but if she’s constantly talking about it and being awkward, it can make the mood weird whereas if she’s confident and doesn’t mention it, you won’t care
This movie has always been more than revenge. It was also trying to fulfill the last wishes of Marcus. Shows how much he cared as a father and his love for the man who treated him like a son. But I will say hands down this is the best ascending to heaven scenes i have ever seen. Still makes me cry after all these years.
Boromir: Hold my 5 arrows. Frodo: Hold my emotional scares that mean even when I win and make it back home I can never truly be happy as things can never go back to how they used to be and the only release I'll ever have is a metaphorical death.
The movie in general is fine, but i found the ending spoiled a bit ridiculous, u mean about the Emperor fighting in the Arena vs a "mere" gladiator is ridiculous if you know about Rome. I feel sometimes the plot get's too complicated to solve it so they go for a deux ex machina ending like this case, the guy was a soldier that ended as gladiator and his nemesis is the emperor in real Rome sorry kid the emperor is virtually unreachable for you.
@@FermiToll the film is loosely based 9n actual historical events. The fight did indeed happen and Rome was turned over to the people and then Rome fell within 100 years due to corruption. Maximus was a slave after a coup and the emperor died at the hands of a slave, a person wrestler in the arena.
Just rewatched this film last night. I seriously don't get the backlash toward it. This is a really strong movie. Great acting, terrific Hans Zimmer score, amazing production values, and just tells a great story. That said, I'd totally forgotten how deeply unsettling Joaquin Phoenix is in it. He's such a vile, unpleasant, sickening character, its hard to even look at him. A really great villain. And what on Earth is with the hate for the action scenes, too? It may help that I've only ever seen the movie on DVD, but still...the action seems decently filmed. There's some genuinely awesome duels and stunts in here. This movie kicks my ass and then some. Crowe is King.
"He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him." Indeed, Maximus was to fulfill the vision of Marcus Aurelius to expand, defeat and conquer for then, almighty Rome. I could watch this ten years later and still love it.
Jones6192 Yep. This movie needs to be released again on IMAX or something so that we can see it again and so the young people today can see what a real movie is.

The most moving thing about this heroic epic is not his inevitable death, which underlines the tragedy of the main character again, but that at the moment of his triumph, his complete vengeance, he manifests a complete disinterest in this world and his desire to be with his family in the hereafter unite, revealed.

One of the most powerful films ever made. They don't make movies like these anymore. We should all aspire to be like Maximus.
I fear that for the moment, our society does not value manhood. We shall have to rediscover it when another country attacks - or be swept from power. But such is the cycle of humanity. I am only sorry I live now, when so many have grown soft and weak and America - the America of past - is sinking.
Aaaand now its just edgy
Charlie Mike thankyou, I was thinking this exact thing. We in the west are attacking our masculinity, deeming it toxic etc. hopefully soon we can return to the stoicism of years past.

The Avenger films are good fun movies. But Gladiator is an authentic movie.

Who will help me carry him?
To me, this movie is about the value of ethical, charismatic leadership. Maximus could have betrayed Senator Graccus, he could have just stayed a gladiator and gotten rich, he could have gone in a million selfish directions.
Yet, he knew he was going to have to die. And he went ahead and did what he did anyway. And that's leadership. It isn't about having the big office and the fancy car. it's about standing in the door for the people who rely on you, it's about taking the hit when you could have just as easily blamed it on a subordinate, it's about having to endure pain and suffering and humiliation for the greater good.
Thankyou so much for writing this.... I showed your words to a few others. Thankyou

Kevin Gilligan Russell said the movie is about death. And some have said they knew Maximus was going to die when they saw the wheat in the beginning. I love how Maximus doesnt let his pain destroy him and he 'comes back'. He got back on the horse.

The way he sees fluctuated Heaven and living earth at his last moment is one of the best scene of all time.
I’m 5’6” and I saw this in a theater when it came out. The huge man next to me wept here. I passed him my napkins without a word. Masterful storytelling
@dayum son jajajaja
Why did you mention your height lol
I feel you but from one short guy to another, be confident in yourself and don’t feel like you need to mention your height all the time. Yeah girls care about it (a little) but some girls don’t care, trust me I know. And the girls who don’t care, will only date you if YOU also don’t care. Otherwise you make it awkward. It’s like if a girl had small boobs… some guys don’t care but if she’s constantly talking about it and being awkward, it can make the mood weird whereas if she’s confident and doesn’t mention it, you won’t care
@@Capybara2240 I think he meant 56 as in like age but it autocorrected.

I don't think so
This movie has always been more than revenge. It was also trying to fulfill the last wishes of Marcus. Shows how much he cared as a father and his love for the man who treated him like a son. But I will say hands down this is the best ascending to heaven scenes i have ever seen. Still makes me cry after all these years.
Tony stark : I have saddest end
Maxims: hold my sword ...
💔🖤
William Wallace : hold my freedom 💪💪
@@homelander5499 hahah XD
Boromir: Hold my 5 arrows.
Frodo: Hold my emotional scares that mean even when I win and make it back home I can never truly be happy as things can never go back to how they used to be and the only release I'll ever have is a metaphorical death.
That's a joke, the Tony Stark one
The frost, sometimes it makes the blade stick.
Kills me everytime.. Incredible ending..
Easily one of the best ways any film character has ever said "Put your affairs in order."
*WHO WILL HELP ME CARRY HIM?* Damn so fucking powerful.
+Stannis The Mannis ..his men😣😢😢😢
The movie in general is fine, but i found the ending spoiled a bit ridiculous, u mean about the Emperor fighting in the Arena vs a "mere" gladiator is ridiculous if you know about Rome.
His character(Phoenix) is so dynamic. Fantastic acting.
"He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him." Indeed, Maximus was to fulfill the vision of Marcus Aurelius to expand, defeat and conquer for then, almighty Rome. I could watch this ten years later and still love it.
sad to say some of it is jelousy. I say great movie.
Jones6192 Yep. This movie needs to be released again on IMAX or something so that we can see it again and so the young people today can see what a real movie is.
what backlash? i love this movie, maybe my favourite film ever. everyone i know who has seen it loves it. it won a bucket load of oscars too
Watched it with my dad when I was a kid. 26 now, lost my dad but started my own family. His heaven is so simple yet so powerful. What an amazing move all these years later, always be my favorite
