- Cap height is the height of the capital letter from the baseline - X-Height is the height of the lowercase letter from the baseline - The baseline is the line where all characters rest - The ascender/descender height is the amount of space above the cap/below the base that the ascenders and descenders go
I loved this video. I know that many people have said in the comments that you have done something incorrect, but I believe they should say it nicely and make their on video. Your video was clear and easy to follow. Well done, and thank you.
Good video. You have your height lines a little mixed up though. The Baseline sits directly under your letters (where you have x-height labelled). X-height should sit on top of the short lowercase letters (usually exactly on top of a lowercase 'x'). What you have labelled as 'baseline' is actually a descender line.
The description of baseline, x height and capline is incorrect. Baseline is where the letter sits, and the x height (much like the name suggests) is the height of xs and other non-ascending letters.
I can’t remember for certain, but I’m thinking they were Grand Hotel, KG Two Is Better Than One, High On Fire, and Matchbook. All of them are free fonts available online, you should be able to find them via Google. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely LOVE your videos! Thank you so much! You r so talented! ☺ and the song is so adorable! You got me and my 4 year old girl singing it all day long!!!
Marzi I love your video, watched it several times. You used to have a list of videos listed on this video parts 1 through 6 . I looked at them before . where can I see them . Thanks Deb
So inspiring I started with hand lettering as a hobby for My Baby lil Girl b Day last year, this Year for her 2 Bday u Help me a lot :) lots of blessings!!! I Would Like to know where can I see more ideas to get inspired about frames, dividers, lettering?what do you recommend me ?thanks a lot
I'd recommend a metal ruler. That way, it won't get run down like a wood ruler would and your lines will always be straight! Or you could also invest in a T-Square.
Love the video! Found it via Pinterest. That stencil you use at 2:45 to make a grid, where can I find that? Googling "grid stencil" didn't yield any usable results :-)
Your measurement lines are not quite right, it may be easier if you do it this way.. Ascender line, cap height line, x-height line, baseline, descender line. Your letter actually sits on the baseline and the top of your lower case letter extends to your x-height line (Hence why the area is called an x-height) your lower case descenders like on the low case p of g will fall to the descender line. It's easier this way because the top of your lower case letters have somewhere to go, therefore you know where to stop. This measurement system allows for every section of your letter to have a place.
This video is HIGHLY inaccurate. The cap height of a letter is the top of the ascender, where as the x- height is the top of a lower case letter, or the height of the crossbar. Every type-face (they're not called "fonts", since a font refers to the whole family) has a different x-height. The baseline is always at the bottom of the type, not where the descenders end. Gotta do your research.
Hmmm thanks for the heads up, but I just like to watch it for creativity purposes. Art is about making something your own, and the fonts don't have to match perfectly. Letting creativity flow is one of the ups to art, and working with space is another highlight and reason to use creativity.
+SabDay Art this is inclines more towards design than art. In art people arent obligated to follow rules but as a graphic designer you gotta be aware of the rules to handle typogrpahic solutions.

Creating your own typography?
Great video by the way, very helpful.
Ah right, have you created any videos on typography?
Thanks for replying
Yayyyy!! I just learn how to do this
Love this! What is the straight edge tool you're using called? Is it a ruler specifically? I am looking for something like that. :)
I'd recommend a metal ruler. That way, it won't get run down like a wood ruler would and your lines will always be straight! Or you could also invest in a T-Square.
Omnigrid rulers that are used in quilting would be great too. They are see through and grip the surface well
It's alright if I use normal black pens , Instead of those pens? ... I hope you answer my question ..
WOW, thanks your video is really great :)
What fonts were used on your computer that you used as examples?
Awesome tut...thanks. The link does not work for me though.

Love the video! Found it via Pinterest.

I believe the Dollar Tree ships internationally
I believe that's an Omnigrid ruler, you can find them at sewing or quilting shops 👍
Megan Smetzer Thank you so much Megan!! :))
What is the second and fourth font at 2:37?
Great vid BTW is this vid sponsored?
has it a second part?
This nice
The music is so fitting :D
That is NOT what the x-height is!!! Ahh! x-height is where the top of the x hits. The x-height is different on every font.

Kat Laura Ann This helped me out thanks
Thanks for the tutorial. It was very inspiring. And fyi- I don't care where the X height is.
it's interesting!
I love your teaching videos! Thanks for subscribing to my channel, too! Looking forward to sharing techniques.

Ahhh thank you, luckily I'm not a graphic designer, and I don't plan to be one.
I tried hand lettering just now and it looked so bad lol. I'll just stick to drawing pictures with my copics
That's not what the x-height is...
I guess SOME MIGHT call this a lesson in hand lettering....she. IS using her hand to hold the pen or pencil, and then making letters.
Let me guess, sponsored by Sakura?
You can buy tablets that have these lines on them for children to practice -- at dollar tree..
Thank you! Your tutorial is the best one I found here!
