Max Norman
He produced some of heavy metal’s most legendary albums, including definitive classics by Ozzy Osbourne and Megadeth. He’s also helmed fan-favorites from Lynch Mob, Dirty Looks, Dangerous Toys, Loudness, Y&T, Armored Saint and many more. Max Norman indulges us with stories about Randy Rhoads, Ozzy and Dave Mustaine. He also tells us about the time he and Henrik Ostergaard escaped a potential barroom beat-down; how he nearly produced Pantera’s “Cowboys from Hell;” how a duct-tape trick with Paul Rodgers was repeated with Jason McMaster; and the clever recording techniques you never knew were all a part of the process.

Wow! What a great “get”! Max is under-rated. His records sound so damn good. Killer interview!!!
This interview is absolutely amazing! Max Norman was one of the first producers who's name I immediately recognized as someone who created solid meaningful albums. If I was looking through records at the store and saw his name on the back, that album was automatically inconsideration to bring home with me that day. His name meant that was probably a fantastic hard rock/heavy metal album. Y&T, Savatage, Armored Saint, Coney Hatch, Grim Reaper... of course, the bigger bands like Ozzy and Megadeth. But it was all those less popular names that I knew would be awesome because Max Norman doesn't make crap. He literally made my life better!
The first Lynch Mob has one of the best guitar tones put to record. PERIOD. Hats off to you mr Max Norman.

Great interview! He is a great producer. One of my favorites from him is 220 Volt Eye to Eye from 1988. Great 80s metal record.

Awesome! Missed that he was behind the knobs for Loudness and Armored Saint, some of my favorites of those. He got Akira to have this wicked guitar sound. The kind of sound that you can smell the amp burning thru the speakers, rhetorically speaking. When you've got that, it's timeless sounding.

Why does no one acknowledge the first 3 Pantera albums....you really can't erase history. Great interview regardless. Love to hear another interview especially about his working with LOUDNESS.

Man the opening of this interview was so important for me to hear. The past few years have been really difficult. I've lost several people who were very dear to me and this reminded me that its something we all go through as we get older.

If I'm remembering the stories I've heard, the anecdote with Vinnie Paul'Pantera and attempting to convince Max to use their studio, the studio in question was a place owned/operated by Dime and Vinnie's father. Maybe it was in someplace like Arlington? The elder Abbot was himself a country western producer I believe.
From the interviews I read about the early recording of Cowboys from Hell, and I believe it was Rex that said it, allegedly Dime/Vinnie Paul's father was, during those sessions, a bit opinionated on their production, looking over their shoulders and a bit skeptical about the sound and tones (Rex might've mentioned something such as "Dime's dad said 'you can't overdrive the guitars like that' and Rex said 'F**ing watch us!).
So in the grand scheme of things, everything worked out just as it should: Terry Date took the ball and ran great with it, Max did phenomenal work with George Lynch, and he didn't need to deal with a potentially thorny situation of contesting the early evolution of Pantera's sound with other folks in that 'mix'.
Talk Louder has become my definitive podcast go to. This episode absolutely crushed! Yalls Rock N Roll nerd well runs deep. I’ll be listening 🤘

it's amusing Max is a little less ebullient on those two albums by Blizzard of ozz, but George Lynch recently lauded them as next level and a whole other dimension on the G.O.A.T.ness of Randy

Max is a legend, and he will forever be tired to those two masterpieces by Blizzard of ozz. I wish people would stop calling them ozzy solo albums, Steve Machat has all evidence contrary to that in his book.
I thought Max is a little tempered on his appreciation of those two great seminal albums. And if he did not think Randy's solos were spectacular, was he really listening. But I like he does accentuate that Diary of a Madman was a better album, that is why I gloss it Diary of a Masterpiece.
Speaking of Megadeth, Countdown to Extinction is a flawless recording but in Youthanasia there are mixing problems, for example ; vocals seems buried in the mix...also lead guitars too...interesting..i would like to ask it to Max
The Derek from Gentle Giant behind signing Pantera was of course Derek Shulman. If not familiar with his contribution to music as a record executive and through Gentle Giant do yourself a favour and research a bit. GG's music is still, some 50 years later, quite challenging and truly progressive stuff.

@@talklouderpodcast4537 The timestamps are great. I think some people are afraid to add them because it's time consuming and they don't want people to pick through the interview. But I find I'm more likely to even start a long interview if they are there and then, strangely enough, I listen to a lot more or all of it if I have a general idea what the content is. So great job adding those. In this case, I'm not missing a single minute of this fascinating interview. I've bought so many Max Norman albums over the years it's not even funny!
