Love your commentary Josh! I recently went to a Lexus dealer and asked to seat in GX460. Naturally, the sales person asked me why not 550, to which I replied: "It's not an upgrade over 460!" and I don't think she understood what I meant, at all. Greetings from Maryland, Wiktor
Hahaha! It will never cease to amaze me how many car salespeople have no idea what they’re actually selling… case in point the number of Toyota salespeople who still to this day don’t know jack about the Rav4 Prime.
I love the 4runner interior. Many complain about the 4runners interior saying its plasticky and very old school and simplistic. But......man.....The plastics feel so incredibly durable and it's so easy to use and comfortable. My 4runner only has 60K miles but the interior looks absolute brand new still.
@@JoBiatch Yeah - I should clarify, I guess? That said 6th gen does not register yet for me because it's not actually for sale. I agree with everything you said.
@FatalAnimal I think people aren’t able to make the differentiation between good plastic and low quality plastic. It’s like saying all plastic kitchen appliances are the same when you could have an amazing 80s or 90s can opener or old school Rubbermaid-things that are thick, robust plastic; versus something cheap from today’s target shelves. The 5th-gen 4Runner is all plastic but feels like the old school Rubbermaid plastics.
My 5th gen is so smooth. If I could properly capture in words, just how effortless and smooth that vehicle is when say you're slowing down from 50 miles an hour on a service road to make an oblique right hand turn at 45°, and the engine and transmission just work together, smooth like butterscotch pudding, and then when you're ready to accelerate out of the turn, it just happens. I can't imagine all of the hundred other things that would have to happen if a turbo was attached to a four-cylinder engine to make that happen. No thank you to the 6th GEN.
Being old school and simplistic is the entire point of a 4Runner. That’s why the hesitation about the 6th gen is so common. In about 5 years most will probably come around provided the drivetrain works
Josh, you're awesome! I'd like to be there too, but it is just too far for me to travel, so your commentary and insight is very helpful. The 550 looks like a Nissan Xterra, but not as good.
Thanks again for taking us along Josh!! Looked like a great time. 😉😊 I would so buy a Volkswagen van if it was offered with an engine. How great/fun would that be?! ;)
I know! I said to John that if they end up depreciating like Audi’s eTrons, maybe I’ll pick one up in a year or two for half the new price and for that I could get onboard! 😂
The door close on the 4Runner sounds identical to my J150. The Aisin 5 speed auto is very robust and durable. Combined with the 1GR engine, we have a winner.
It would, but Toyota would much rather you pay for the GX550 if you want that. I think they learned after the V8 4Runner that people are willing to pay for power so why bother offering it in a Toyota when they can charge Lexus money for it.
I have a '25 signia and love it. It is lacking a lot of attributes found in real SUVs/cross overs and is a bit pricy so not a good pick for everyone. I find it is a simple dependable small station wagon with comfortable luxury and wonderful gas milage. It is a more an upscale Camry wagon competing with small luxury wagons like Volvo and BMW not real SUVs or more mundane Subaru or VW in my mind. And around town I am getting gas milage in the low 40s!
I think it’s about $5-10K more than it should be. The fact that even a base LC/LC is more expensive than my nicely loaded GX460 (with mark levinson) was is a problem. And a vehicle with a $70K MSRP is going to be $75-80K OTD after taxes, fees, accessories, etc. and that’s A LOT to pay for what I feel like is a slightly nicer 4Runner. The mid-trim LC also gets way too close to the GX550, IMO and after having driven the turbo-hybrid I4 I’d rather have the 3.4 TT V6 in the GX550 for basically the same price.
I'm in the market right now between a used gx460 or a 2024 4R TRD Pro. Given you own both do you have a rec? This will be for daily driver (short work commute) 80% of the time and 20% for road trip/camping/light off roading. Do you find the seats more comfortable on a long drive in a 4R vs the LC250?
I’d skip the 4Runner if you aren’t going to do any hardcore off-roading. That was honestly why I ended up getting the GX460-80% or more of my use is on-road and long road tripping which the GX460 is so much better for.
If you’re talking about the Land Cruiser, they’re the same price that’s why I was making that comparison, but I also wasn’t comparing a new 4Runner to the old one.
I see you broke out the Omega diver for the state fair. Good choice. Doesn't look like you know what. ;-). Sorry Toyota, I can't imagine buying any of your new turbo products (i.e. new products) for several more years at least.
That was a cute video... But Toyota missed the opportunity to gag everybody in Texas auto show, they should bring all the real trucks that they sell worldwide even the ones that they use at Dakar and their vans that they sell in Japan, shoot even Mitsubishi should bring L200 and Pajero to US
They really just needed to make a few small improvements to the 4runner and keep pricing reasonable. They went in the exact wrong direction with anything
@joshjamescars i completely understand that, but the implementation is what is flawed. Perhaps the 4runner is the least ruined. I cannot grasp a bunch of smart engineers managing to take up internal space with the battery in such a manner, and making a 3rd row or fold-flat seats not feasible. Same with all their new hybrids, it's just done poorly. Less engine size should free up some space, and there is surely a better way to spread the battery out or make the vehicle bigger to offset. Without that, it's not an actual improvement; they all are effectively smaller vehicles due to this inefficient spatial design, meaning people need to then consider sizing up to offset this reduction, completely negating the environmental benefits. And they need to make all the junk and expensive safety features extremely easy to turn off permanently
Those black shiny plastic wheel flaps on new 4runner looks hideous. They will be all scratched up on the first forest trail. IDK, im not a fun of the new Toyota design. The paint on the 24 4runners is awesome! Truth to tell, i like the 4R door panels more than in 460, that softex is very comfortable for the arm and located at the perfect height as well. Yes, the wooden trim on 460 is nice but 4R is more comfortable and wwll thought out. I think new LC is about 5k-7k overpriced, I'd get 24 4Runner if I'd be choosing between them two
new 4runner looks overstyled. Not my style. I prefer the previous generation TRD Pro way more, least on the outside. For sure the inside of the new one will be better. When you compare the LC, the old 4runner to the new 4runner, the new 4runner looks a bit childish. Landcruiser looks so boring and cheap compared to the Bronco. If only Bronco has a reputation for reliability, it would kill the LC. Paying a premium for reliability is insane, might as well lease a more fun less reliable car.
I don’t know if I agree with the interior-the tech will be better but from what I’ve seen, the interior is shared with the Tacoma and the plastics in the Tacoma are terrible-all trims feel like that base Land Cruiser 1958. And I agree that the new 4Runner looks less mature than the 5th gen.
@@joshjamescarsI’ve seen a couple of videos where those who were able to access the interior of the new 4Runner mentioned that the plastics feels better than those in the Taco.
@arhamkhakwani5851 That’s good to know! I hope that is the case. Right now they’re all pre-production prototypes though so we’ll have to wait to see what a production unit looks and feels like. Pre-production can be better or worse than final production.
Love the simplicity and quality of the 2024 4Runner!

You’re talking about the 5th Gen right? I love mine too. I feel like everything inside was made for my body type. I’m SOOO comfortable in there!

I wish car brands would bring back VANS like the VW ID Buzz. I remember my uncle having a fully loaded Van.
YES. Same here… no crossover or SUV can match the practicality of a good van.
Wish the new 4runner offered the turbo V6 😢. That would be a game changer.
It would, but Toyota would much rather you pay for the GX550 if you want that. I think they learned after the V8 4Runner that people are willing to pay for power so why bother offering it in a Toyota when they can charge Lexus money for it.

Yes!!! You hit the nail on the head in terms of what I love about the Signia in that it is basically a Camry wagon.
Hey Josh, which would you say is more reliable: the 4-Cyl Turbo or the TX State Fair carnival rides?
HAHAHA!
What are your thoughts on the value of the Land Cruiser Land Cruiser trim? I don’t see people driving many 1958 edition. Most have the LC / LC

Please do a full review of Crown Signia.
Definitely going to try to get one!
Josh my 23 4Runner TRD Pro is a tank!! I saw the new Land Cruiser and cool but no thank U!! Love my Pro!!
Hold onto that for a long time! As the saying goes, they don’t make ‘em like they used to!

Agreed, GX460 is so much more comfortable (and slightly more modern) than the 5th gen 4Runner. Also, the V8 sounds incredible 😅
57k for the Land Cruiser and scratchy plastic on the door card? Crazy!
Oh yeah, the pricing on the 1958 is a joke.
What’s the use of comparing the price of the old TRD Off Road to a new Land Cruiser? Why not compare the new incoming TRD Off Road’s price?
If you’re talking about the Land Cruiser, they’re the same price that’s why I was making that comparison, but I also wasn’t comparing a new 4Runner to the old one.
Love the new 4Runner. But I'd never buy until at least the refresh.
no more “Prime” badge? ( does it mean less expensive 🤔?)
Hahahaha right???
I see you broke out the Omega diver for the state fair. Good choice. Doesn't look like you know what. ;-). Sorry Toyota, I can't imagine buying any of your new turbo products (i.e. new products) for several more years at least.
I did!! That’s my go-to throw around watch so I don’t end up accidentally damaging or losing my Planet Ocean or Sub.

The problem is the 4Runner had to lose the V6 given emissions regulations and other than the powertrain, it is the 5th-gen with a few changes.
