  • Been a while since I did one of these!
    This is Combat Mission: Final Blitzkrieg, set on the Western Front from October 1944 to January 1945.
    Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea).
    You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront.com and especially the forums.

    As Hapless's unfortunate and crap opponent just some observations from the Heer's side:
    1/. A most excellent defense from Hapless. I didn't stand a chance! ;D His arty use was exemplary.
    2/. I knew exactly where all his armour was very early, and couldn't do squat about it. Which says volumes about his defensive setup. And my CM WW2 inexperience.
    3/. Airpower is an crazy force multiplier: 25 kills translated to a platoon and half of combat-ineffective troops. Oh, and my AA gun was the very first casualty. ;(
    4/. That first aircraft also forced me to hunker down my entire army for 15 minutes while I waited for it (them?) to depart. My only experience with air has been in Black Sea (modern) where any armour visible is quite literally toast (watch 3+ Bradleys brew up in one minute if they aren't really well hidden...).
    So I was expecting to lose all my armour pretty damn quick, and pushed everything back deep under cover. Which left my advance advancing troops unsupported by any armour or heavy weapons. My attacks thereafter were predictably dispatched piecemeal. ;D
    5/. I should try new things in single player first, before employing them (or facing them) in PBEM. Like aircraft and AA. And halftracks on rocky ground. ;D
    Great video and narration Hapless.

    These are always fantastic, easily my favorite Combat Mission videos out there! Really appreciate the editing work you put in to make these so presentable.
    You raise some really good points about player morale, too. There have been a series of Let's Play's over the last few years on the Something Awful forums where Combat Mission teams are divided among multiple players down the chain of command, with a few issuing higher level orders and a bunch physically moving around individual platoons or squads on the map, and consistently the players have had their morale broken far sooner than their pixeltruppen which is always fascinating to watch in action.

      Thank you very much! Player morale is actually really interesting and kind of slips under the radar sometimes. Saw it a lot in the TacBf mod for ARMA, see it even more in RO2, especially in the campaign. Nothing knocks that sense of superiority out of the Germans by crushing them on a tough map :D

    Great vid. Haven't seen anyone play this yet. Looks really realistic. Will have to get it. Great editing too, not to drawn out. 10/10

    Great video and you did very well. I used to play CMBN for years, but now that I have CMFI I'm loving the open ground. It's a whole new experience from bocage. An experience not even Market Garden can give you.

    Yes, like. Want more.
    A few more relevant comments:
    1. What month is the scenario set in? It didn't look very "Winter War" to me.
    2. How did you decide on those positions? I personally would like to know why you chose the ground you do.
    3. While I'm enjoying your Squad, CM, and WoWS videos, it seems like you get the most views (4 times as many) on your RS2 Beta vids.

      1. December I think. Its about -7, but not snowy.
      2. Mostly everything is a balance between field of fire and defilade- probably could do with a video on its own. Still need to do that Duffer's Drift thing.
      3. I've caught a ride on the RS2 Hype Train. Simple as.

    I think this was a great demonstration of the force multiplier effect of air power. I'm guessing your opponent could have countered by purchasing more AA, however I've no experience of how effective it is?

      Josey, I was Hapless's victim in the above video.
      At least in the modern CM Black Sea game, AA I have found to be mediocre/token at best. It feels more like simply rolling dice, and on a 6, aircraft destroyed.
      In CM WW2, I've no idea: this was the first time I've actually had an AA asset, and it got off perhaps 10-15 seconds of fire before being destroyed (as I posted above, it was I think the very first casualty of the whole game, and certainly the first aircraft kill).

      Thanks for the reply.
      I've not been in the unfortunate situation of playing against air power so am curious how to counter it. It would seem that bad weather and concealment are the best defence. Not really something you could control on such an open map on a clear day.

      Playing against General Sir Anthony a few times, he's always trying to come up with ways to sidestep the inevitable RAF Typhoons. He's had a couple of cheap Opel Blitzs driving around in his deployment zone as decoys on occasion, but the best way is to take a few AA vehicles and pray. Sometimes they get lucky.
      The upshot is that AA vehicles are very effective at mopping up in the endgame, once its safe to move them up to the front. Seeing a quad 20mm pointing at your infantry is a real brown pants moment.

      I'm just coming to the end of a MP game where I've used a couple of AA vehs offensively..it didn't go very well!

    Very clever defense, Hap. I thought it was novel to put TRPs on the objectives; a good way to settle the second guessing on which approach route the enemy will take.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  7 лет назад +1

      Cheers man! What's interesting is that the TRPs in the objectives were very handy, but the ones I had out in the field for the tanks and MGs to range in on were borderline useless. Should have left them behind and taken another plane!

    Are you using mods? It’s looks pretty amazing. Also I have a newer gaming laptop. I downloaded the demo but it was really laggy…. To the point I’m afraid to buy it but in your game everything runs smoothly. What’s gives?

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  Год назад

      I don't think this one is particulalry modded (probably just effects and icons, which aren't a big drain). The TLDR is that CM runs on an old engine and some graphics cards really struggle with it.

      @@usuallyhapless9481 I have a Ti 1660 graphics card in my gaming laptop from 2021…. It crunches every NEW AAA game I throw at it and I turn the setting up to ultra… So are you saying that a game that’s nearly a decade old wont work on my laptop properly…? I understand if some Combat Mission players don’t want to update their graphic cards from 2015…. But If someone has a graphic card from 2021, I would think BlitzKrieg would work. What to you think?

    By chance are you going to talk about the 4.0 update in an video?

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  7 лет назад

      I'm not sure there are enough new features to really warrant a video, though your mileage may vary. The big things I can remember are off map kill statistics, infantry run away from explosions more and infantry post men on building corners.

    Ha! @Usually Hapless you'll be amused I just did exactly this to an unfortunate opponent in Black Sea (Gagrina Checkpoint). 7 APCs shredded in oblique crossfire, for a loss of just 5 men... ;D

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 года назад

      It's awesome when you can pull it off! I don't think either side on Gagrina Checkpoint has much left if it's lost 7 APCs- that's modern CM for you, games can turn on a dime.

    You should find some better opponents. With all respect to both of you, it's more interesting to see a more even match.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  6 лет назад +1

      That's a whole subject of discussion in itself. Personally, I've found that all CM games are either walk overs for one side or grinds/stalemates that don't make for particularly interesting viewing. For the record, Gnarly and I are 1-1 right now. We first played a game of CMBS where he beat me hands down.
