Making Shavings / Spindle Practice Session

  • I had to make some black shavings to fill up some cracks in an Olive bowl I'm working on, so I chucked up a spindle piece of African Blackwood and started chipping away. Since it was already set up, I never miss a chance to practice my spindle turning, so I give you 17 minutes, non stop, no edits and no time lapse, of one of these practice sessions.

    How can some people not like this??? I think it is awesome how you do so much detail in a very small area of the piece. well done and shame on the disliker

      Thanks Dave! And about someone not liking this, some people only like short whole project videos, I'm pretty sure the not liking is not about the project but only about the presentation.

    Part 1
    Okay class, today’s lesson requires perfect eyesight, patience, and a very sharp gouge & an incredible skill set.
    Part 2
    You’re going to stick it all back together & turn it into a pen blank !!
    Seriously Yuval, great to watch you at work, excellent my friend.
    All the best from the UK

    If I were lucky enough to have some blackwood, I would be saving it for that special finial or knob. For crack filling and other repairs, I like to use charcoal dust made on sandpaper and mixed with C.A. glue or regular yellow wood glue. I also make a coarse dust at the bandsaw of the species of wood I'm working with.
    I always enjoy your work... please keep it up! Woody in Georgia

      Thanks Thomas! I do have a few spare spindle piece to "waste", but I don't see it as such, I do sometimes use coffee grinds and CA to fill up...

    Hi Yuval. A small two wheel steady rest would be a nice tool to have for work like this. Just have a little piece of mind for fear of the vibration breaking the spindle to soon. I love trying delicate work. Would love to have a master of the craft such as yourself.
    Someday Yuval, someday!! :-)

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  5 лет назад

      Thank you for the compliments Ed, but I'm far from being a master, I just like to play around. I do have in mind to make small steady rest for spindle turning soon enough. I just need to break out of my lazy period of the year, when it's too hot and mosquito ridden to turn :)

      Yuval Lahav Woodturning Hi Yuval. I can so relate to the heat you mention and the mosquito's. Oh but I have never been lazy. 😜 Today is the first day of relief from the last week of hot and steamy here. My wife and I have been hiding inside our home. Thank God for A/C to keeps us cool. 🤣

    Blackwood is a pleasure to turn. I’m in the habit of saving samples of shavings from just about everything in case I need them!

    Interesting to watch you use the cut off tool as a tiny skew. I've been doing that as well...with limited success. I think I need a better sharpening system. Anyway fun to watch, thanks for posting.

    Pretty Cool. Practice, practice, and more practice, that's what it takes. Seemed you were going so slowly, however it only took 17 minutes to turn out a finial. Practice can be meditative, its not a race is it. Thanks for sharing.

      Well, I actually did this to make some black dust to fill in some cracks in Olive wood, while working on my form and cuts, trying out different sharpenings and angles. So yeah :)

    Yuval oh, that was awesome! Every chance I get I'm doing the same things with very small pieces. Spindle work takes time and patience to accomplish great results. However it's somewhere in to 3 to 4 mil where I run into trouble! I would love to get a spindle that size to practice on though! African Blackwood is very expensive here!

    Hello Yuval, What a nice way to relax. By the way, don't get rid of it. Nick Zammeti is getting to sound a bit desparate over outstanding chess pieces and I reckon that you could get a few out of your spindle. . . . Regards, Glenn. :-)

    You probably would have gotten more usable shavings by grinding that stick in a pencil sharpener. But, I'm like you, any excuse to spin a piece of wood, is a good excuse to spin a piece of wood. Great watching you work, thanks!!

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  5 лет назад +1

      Exactly Nik, using a pencil sharpener would produce the shaving I needed, but where's the fun in that?! :)

    Practice I find almost as therapeutic, if not more so, than turning a piece .. as you don't have to worry if you "cock" it up :)
