  • After my last attempt at turning a wormhole form, I took it to the next level, both in design and in technique, and I barely managed to bring to a successful finish, but it was done!
    This Yew wormhole hollow form took the most I had in tool control and thinking outside the box.

    Hi Yuval! Been way too long since I last stopped by. Outstanding achievement to keep such thin form on the lathe to completion. I thought it was all over when you lost such a large piece and was surprised that CA would hold together while the other side was turned. Beautiful form. Well done sir! Looking forward to your next project.

    Hello , as I turn yew myself I wanted to watch that video , wondering what "wormhole hollow form" meant but didn't know more later , anyway , that turned piece of yew is wonderful in itself and a challenge, I'll try to find an appropriate blank without crack , yew is by far my favourite , it grows everywhere in Brittany , thanks for that new idea !

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      I hope the wormhole (cosmic event, not pest related!!) was clear in the end! :) And I'm glad you found inspiration in my work. I wasn't aware Yew was so prone to cracking when turning it this thin, and I also left the pith right there because it looked so nice and I had to, not thinking for a moment what problems it will create. All the Yew I have was sent to me from friends from the UK, that tree doesn't grow in central Italy as far I know...

    • @youenn2180
      @youenn2180 4 года назад

      @@yuvallahav Hello again , I thought " wormhole form" was something else related to , cracking in yew may appear while the whole log is drying , unfortunately , its small pith is no problem , yew grows in western Europe , think of the famous welsh longbow that defeated the French at Agincourt , but soon the English had to import yew staves from the swiss and italian mountains that allow the best slow straight growing ,( I needed weeks in Brittany till I found a more or less appropriate log for my longbow ) happy turning !

    Since the fail video I've been wondering how you were going to reattempt this. I like that you attempted it again and thought of a better solution for clasping it after flipping. Kol hakavod.

    Great job
    Did you ask yourself at any stage of this one"Why did I start THIS" ???

      Eheheh, I know what you mean man, and yes, I've asked it every time it cracked on me, but since I'm working on making something different, larger, and this is just a stepping stone to it, I went and pushed through.

    Nice video, Yuval.
    it has become a nice workpiece.
    It reminds me of the Diabolo game.
    Hm, where you worked with the Dremel. Why did not you clamp it on the faceplate and turn off the tap, nubs?

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад +1

      Yes Gunter!! I've also played with a Diabolo (in my juggling phase)!
      I didn't use the Cole jaws on my chuck to hold on to the piece while I worked on it because I didn't think about it. It's actually a very very good idea and I will do it that way the next time.

    Which wood is this

    • @yuvallahav

      Like the title of the video suggest, it's Yew (mostly found in the UK).

    Firstly welcome back my friend.Olive would maybe a better wood than Yew? The thing is used for? All in all a master of fine tuning is back Cheers now 🇦🇺.......

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      Thank you Roger!! Olive would have been better (I know it can turn as thin and more without cracking), but I won't use up the good stuff before I nailed down the technique for doing it right.

    In the future soak the wood for this type of form in resin to keep it strong, something like cactus juice wood save alot of heartache for you

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      That is a very good idea. I've been seeing cactus juice for years (mainly in Capt. Eddie's videos), but I've no idea how to get some of it to Italy (where I'm based). Also, heartbreak is part of creating art, what else would an artist complain about if he didn't have an aching heart? ;)

    howdy fellow Irishman...... I'm wondering could this be done by using a pen mandrel ? So turn the outside form first as you did, and then mount the piece on the mandrel and work from both sides ? ......
    Let's make a couple next week together YAY !!!
    good video man, thanks for sharing.

    Don't you think that was easier if you have estabilizating wood before?

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад +1

      I wish I could, but alas I have very little time to work in the shop, and needs to use what I have. In this case, Yew, even when dry, is very prone to cracking.

    If you didn't use the parting tool as a gouge you wouldn't get bits flying off... Use the right chisel for your own safety please.

    • @yuvallahav
      @yuvallahav  4 года назад

      Well, you can use the parting tool as a gouge with skill enough, but I guess I'm not that skilled :) Now seriously, I work very safe, I'm using sharp tool and face protection and I'm always aware of my surroundings, and above all, I love to experiment, even at the cost of bits flying off. I'm a great believer in learning with our hands, but thank you for your concern!
