People want elims because getting elims is sexy. Meanwhile... staying alive, splitting attention, baiting out resources, and herding your opponents into bad positions is the real art of playing Tracer. Great vid!

    • @ale3for913

More than people just wanting elims, it's all that people see when they watch the highlights. I used to get games in t500 EU lobbies, and let me tell you, even if they aren't killing lots of people in a fight, they are having so much impact. People like Chazm, Kevster, Sirmajed, KSAA, FDGod etc. They're impossible to ignore, they always have a good bit of attention from all 5 players on the enemy team. It's hard to put your finger on exactly what they're doing, but the way they plays provides immense gravity for their team. Stuff like that is hard to understand from the pro's POV as a spectator.

I think that's the fundamental thing people dont understand about ball is he can distract so well. If people don't see their ball standing in front of them and you arent killing isolated targets, they just assume you arent doing anything. Meanwhile ball has both supports peeling for each other so no one else on their team is getting help and they don't need their teams healing as the ball player

This video is a perfect example of why tracer is so incredibly hard. You have to constantly be in the correct position for your team, and apply just the right amount of pressure for their level of engagement with the enemy team. And on top of that, you need great mechanics too.
The upside is she's a DPS that can fulfill the tanks role at the same time.

I literally only 1 tricked tracer and echo in seasons 1 to 3 and I climbed to masters effortlessly, and i always thought it was easy and i even used to say tracer is easy but I've recently branched out and I realised why people think tracer is hard and it's because outside of tank, everything else in the game is lowkey easy 😂
Tank is a different beast tho, i only started really playing it in s9 and its incredibly fun but I'm hard stuck gold when I hit gm as support in 3 days and I climbed to gm as dps inna day after finally deciding to play the counterpick game, but like as dps or support I can deal with reapers and bastion, but tank is the hardest dam class because every other class has a win button over you and theres litterally dps you cannot win 1v1s with but outside of tank, playing tracer first made the rest of the game seem like easy mode lmao

12:55 I feel like the thing to learn here isn't just thinking, but condensed thinking. Being able to assess a situation, think of the possible outcomes for different actions, and being able to commit/de-commit instantly after deciding what to do is a lot harder than people may assume.
It might sound like an insult when you're being told that you aren't thinking enough, but I believe its more so a sign of how much effort is needed to pull off instant reaction plays in the middle of a hectic battlefield.

I’ve actually been doing this for a while with Reaper and Tracer, and I swear the teammates always think you’re providing no value. And that’s when you know you’re playing with morons that you’re enabling and allowing to pop off. I’ll be 7-2, while the tank and the other DPS is 13-3 or something. As long as we win, I’m good 😂

    • @RemedieX

Yeah, they don't see that I'm trading Wraith for Suzu and Immort (surviving) and therefore assume I'm providing no value... They see me force out the 2 biggest cooldowns and don't push in, I really don't know what else to tell them. Some people are just dumb, and this happens in GM as well, especially with supports assuming you're doing nothing because you're not killing everyone.

There’s a key loop as tracer that you’ll
Often find: enemies take angles and spread out. You isolate and kill and do a ton of damage. Then after, they will get wise to this, and group up to prevent that. By then you should have pulse bomb; grouped enemies are weak to pulse bomb. After a big pulse, enemies spread out more and the cycle continues.

Very good video. I feel like i engage at the right time 90% of time but i definately do give up positional advantages and waste my time during the mid fight a lot.
Ive also definately been overvaluing the positives of poking the tank here and there from off angles purely to keep the 20% heal reduction debuff on them. Thinking about it a heal reduction is nothing compared to distracting healers.
This will definately make me a bit less of an "ehh im bored im going to go poke that for a bit" tracer and tbh its helped me rethink some of my genji play as well. Im very good as a frontline/ sudo offtank genji, im also good at playing side angles from a close to team kind of position but too much time playing into shit like double shield or goats type comps has definately destroyed the effectiveness of my flank/assasin genji playstyle. I very rarely surprise people and in fact for no real reason like to go for the head on 1v1 matchup relying on mechanics. Its satisfying but definately not very smart.
Oddly enough im kinda an initial timing plus mechanics tracer/genji with very little afterthought but if necesary im very solid at playing the defensive role, by which i mean actively dueling enemy flankers and ruining their effectiveness. I dont really get kills with brains in that scenario either though, i could wait in areas ect but i tend to mainly get value from predicting the enemies movement and landing combos.
Patients and active thought are difinately my weakest points. I play via instinct or random impulse most of the time and i certainly hate the setup process and will cut it as short as i possibly can, without intentionally meaning too. I do adapt pretty well and will change up my playstyle but with whatever playstyle im going for these issues deffinately reduce the effectiveness of my gameplay.
Good video, has made me re-evaluate quite a few things.

The worst is when you have like half the elims of your supports who keep getting clean up elims, and you break their team apart every fight, literally the backbone of your team and than you hit that final push where theres rarely good flank routes and you dony usually have room to play around in their backline as its their spawn so you guys walk it to the end with 4 mins remaining and your teams got crazy inflated stats and you dont and than everyone blames you as if they just hard carried you to the end of the map only for your lack of imput to be the thing holding them back even tho this just exposes how useless their mentally is of run at the choke without a plan because it worked all game until now.
This happens all the time and i just there getting flamed like "without me yall would still be at the bloody spawn' and i sware its how easy i make the game for a team that like lulls them into thinking the enemy team is ass so they like almost try less.

I've been practicing Tracer lately (hard with 80 ping) and it seems like in gold that forcing out cooldowns isn't enough value to justify the pick. Am I just not timing it right? I know I'm dying too much, but since I feel like I'm not getting enough value either, I don't know whether to play safer or play more aggressive

value can come from baiting abilities or even just attention
but know that attention baiting has fleeting value and you should definitely play safer if thats all you can manage to pull
you can call when you're gonna try to bait cool downs and also when you succeed
like "gonna try to bait ana nade, can we push tank if we do?"
      and then
the hope is to make an advantage, and then let your team know to leverage it

Depends on their team comp. Tracer is unique in the sense that this will always be her job, whereas it won’t always be with others like soldier. If they have a tracer sombra, flanking on soldier is basically suicide and is exactly what they want you to do. So u play near your supports in those situations, and if they have a team comp like mercy ana torb mei sigma, flanking is great because no one can reach you.

Tracer used to be a high skill floor hero but with season 9 she is incredibly easy now to pick up and get value with. That is why she is highly picked across the game
All of her best counters’ break points were nerfed because she got the extra 25hp making them considerably worse against her. Ie. Mei icicle no longer 1 shots her, meaning you have to hit 1 hs force recall then hit a 2nd hs and a body shot at minimum to kill her. Kiri now cant hs bodyshot her. She has to hit 2-3 crits. Etc.
Basically changing the breakpoints removed a lot of risk on playing tracer when you know you cant just be 1 shot by a mei
Additionally buffing the projectile size of her shots has made her way more forgiving. She is able to be less accurate than before and hit more of her clip. Also crucially she is able to play at further range from her opponent than before and hit more shots, allowing her to play outside heroes like brig’s range. Her pulse bomb is much easier to land now as well with it having a bigger hit box while the hp changes didnt change any breakpoints for it, so even that became easier to get kills with
On top of all that. Being able to apply the dps passive across the map by spraying a single point of damage is super dumb. Some sort of dmg threshold before the dps passive’s activation is needed to stop tracers across the map tickling you and that be enough to negate 15% healing
All in all, tracer used to be high risk, high skill, high reward. Now she is low-medium risk, low-medium skill, high reward.
