So true. What I care about more is the moment to moment gameplay, that feeling when I'm outplaying my opponents with skill.
It feels bad to play a game where you're playing monkey just trying to stay alive to the 3 brain-dead hard counters, waiting for your teammates to capitalise on the situation and hoping to god they don't turn around and start flaming you and throwing because you're just trying to play monkey, then your team scrapes through a win. It's funny to compare games about this "avoid risk" theme, because in league, as an example, there are characters like Yummi that they just can't be meta. if Yummi is meta the game gets extremely boring and dumb. Same goes for shotguns in some fps titles and projectile spammers on FGCs. But in Overwatch, if you say that Mercy/Lifeweaver cant be meta, you will get death threats sent to your house.

One thing I really hate is the whole “one trick” debate. Everyone has their own things they want to achieve. I play rein because I like to play rein. Sometimes I’ll play monkey but buts really only rein and my goals are to get as high as I can with rein. And people get upset because I don’t want to switch. It’s fair but there’s always a way to win from the other 80% of the team, and unironically there’s probably more value in a dps swap than a tank swap. I had a game last night where we got held on second point dorado against an mercy pocketed echo. The dps then blamed my Ana saying she’s getting picked to quickly by echo. My dps picks that round were venture and tracer. I didn’t care to say anything beforehand but when they blamed Ana I was like, “you think Ana is the problem vs echo when tracer and venture are our dps picks?” And they said “she has a pocket” I was dumbfounded like, soooooooo. And the other support was like “and?” And they said they didn’t have a pocket like that was a reason.
This anecdote is just to say that everyone has the ability to switch if they want. But who the fuck wants to be forced to switch? If I lose on the character select screen then you just chalk it up to that. I’ve played rein in hardcore orisa meta and right now in this game I’m more comfortable playing against Orisa (even pre nerf) more than I am playing the mirror. Why? Because I’ve learned a ton in Orisa meta. Right now the rein swaps that come in aren’t practiced and I’ll just die to things that shouldn’t be gone for. In the sense that if they knew how the mirror was played they wouldn’t do a certain thing. But because the mirror is so rare most people (including myself) are unpracticed

    • @mentlegen3887

I totally agree, I hat that people are so comfortable with disregarding the population of players that wants to just have fun with q specific character they vibe with! Like why the FUCK would I want to be swapping to orisa mauga and Zarya, my least favourite characters in any shooter, my weakest characters too, just so I can marginally increase chances of winning. Teams scarcely understand how irrational and intimidating it can be to pile on a tank for being the reason why the team is losing even though theres usually 50 different factors that contribute to the way a match goes.
And to top it all off theres this awesome situation where if goj disagree with a call to swap because you dont think the character is the problem, you have an increased chance of getting reported, getting an afk player, or learning new slur that you haven't seen before😢
Blizzard needs to remove the extremes from this game and also make swapping more of a balanced trade (no ult should be maintained in my opinion)

It like dumbfounds them then I ask the dps, if they can perform on Genji or hanzo the same as on soldier. Usually they answer no and it’s like, what makes you think I can perform the same on a different tank as well as I can on the tank I have hundreds of not thousands of hours in? I say orisa is braindead (and I believe it) but I’ve played maybe 2 hours of orisa total in OW2. I cannot be trusted in a tanked setting at diamond 2- master 5 where I’m at currently. I also like to play against pharahs, echos, and sombras because I want to know how to fight against one to be more confident against my counters besides just playing for the team. What people aren't discussing about communications in Overwatch, and I'm not arguing for 5v5 versus 6v6, I am just making an observation. In Overwatch 1, the main tank and off-tank communicated back and forth about their cooldowns and timing. The main tank would call out when to push forward, usually down main, while the off-tank would call out flankers and their cooldowns. Tanks were generally more vocal than other roles due to their responsibilities, so having two tanks on your team increased the likelihood of active communication. Watching old Overwatch 1 videos, you often see tank duos joking around together. While DPS and Support did contribute to communications, tanks typically initiated and set the tone of those communications which is extremely important, more important than most people think or even consider.
In Overwatch 2, with only one tank, you're alone in your communication. You don't have a partner who understands your strategy or might have supported your decisions in the past. This solo tank is more likely to receive blame, as there isn't an off-tank to assist when you're in trouble or to call out when not to push because your supports are being flanked or in danger.
As someone who has always been a shot caller and mostly plays main tank heroes, I initially muted comms to avoid toxic players as what I would think of as mini comms vacations. After 10 seasons of OW2, I mostly keep them muted now because dealing with one or two toxic players isn't worth it even if it only happens one game out of five. As the solo tank, you're often the first target for blame, your mistakes are more visible, and it often feels like it is you vs your team.

    • @Savevade
      @Savevade 5 дней назад

True. As a solo tank you feel like you're on an island alone while dps and support have a buddy on there's. If you start losing, you get blamed because it's easy to just blame the one role and you don't have anyone to back you up which all factor into not wanting to talk at all.

  • @adrianferrette
    @adrianferrette 7 дней назад +22

About the comms discussion ( I'm immovable on this stance so just here to share my perspective, not particularly looking for a back-and-forth): I've given speaking-in-game a couple honest efforts over the years and inadvertenly some bad-faith actor routinely rears their head to spew a racist slur at me.
I work a full-day like a lot of people and just want to unwind while having some good competitive fun in a game. Instead, I'm called a 'N*****' in the comfort and safety of my own home from some 'edge-lord' type, looking to get reactions out of strangers online. No thank you.
Unless Blizzard can guarantee that there're genuine repercussions for such actions, comms may as well not exist as far as I'm concerned. If ability to totally disengage from comms didn't exist, I probably wouldn't play at all.

Also i would argue that mauga’s run ability is also bail out. Literally can run away for free and nothing can stop him. Also also thinking of shield and primal as “bail outs” rather than play making tools is a bit questionable in my opinion. But these are still actions that come from the community. The company is at least expecting some minimum degree of civility among players.
Once the problem is normalized as common behavior, it only shows that players are not prepared for the game itself.
As we say here where I live: Education and respect come from home.
This isn't actually Blizzard's fault and it doesn't matter how much they improve or create an anti-toxicity system.
If players don't behave like people on the internet, it gets complicated and the game sinks. What is she going to do? send a letter to the 27-year-old player's mom and dad why did he call someone else monk*y?
From my perspective, the only point that online game companies really miss is: If you are in an online game, you have committed a crime (be it xenophobia, racism, suicid* apology and any form of prejudice), I believe that the The company should revoke the rights to confidentiality of personal data to the justice and immediately open a police report for the crime committed, passing on the chat logs and situations. Because if the company knows about the crime and does nothing, it is colluding with that person, period... This is the only point that I think Blizzard is actually wrong, regarding this aspect of toxicity.

The problem with Overwatch, at least in my opinion, is that there is no meaningful progression fro casual players. Losing feels awful, winning feels meh, and in the end you're not doing it for anything. Competitive is a lot better in the new system, but Quick Play feels so incredibly stale. So much so that I would argue that the old OW1 level system was better than the current "hero progression" system. Because at least in the old system every level-up gave you a lootbox. In this new system, there aren't any meaningful rewards. The player cards adn titles I honestly forget exist 99% of the time, but more importantly, the grind to get them is so stupendously tedious that it just doesn't make sense. This is ESPECIALLY the case since your XP gain rate is dominated by playtime alone. None of the individual hero "badge" progression challenges (elims, damage, healing, etc.) contribute nearly as much at 200 xp for each level, which scales progressively up in how much you need to level up the badge, while playtime stays the same and yields 5600 (!!!!) xp. It's a blatant time grind and shows very little about your actual skill on the hero.

Eskay definitely has the worst take I have ever seen when it comes to the problems with Overwatch.
The game's design has the most impact on the type of players that play it. When you look at a game like Stardew Valley you have a very good idea of the kind of person who plays that day-in-day-out. When you look at what changed Overwatch from an experience worth caring about to one people play just because there's nothing like Overwatch out there,it is exclusively Blizzard's fault. They let the game and by association the community rot. When you give nothing to the community, expect nothing back.
And that's just completely overlooking the ridiculous hypocrisy of "comp games suck because of us" and then "I got banned while smurfing in silver for playing torb!"

Format changes came with drastic shifts in how to play across all Roles. Throw in passives (auto-value, de-prioritization, gameplay obscurity...) + "individual impact" type of design + stripped down rewards and there's a recipe here for less engagement.
OW2 has a lot of "unfair" structures to it; a lot of new/existing mechanics actively punish engagements and taking risks -- Invulnerabilities, Cleanses, A massive uptick in movement/mobility across all roles, passive reductions, more responsibilities, less role clarity.
Throw in the overt hostility of VC + the path of least resistance for who to blame? , and it all makes taking risks highly unworthy of any player's time. Even those at higher ranks who might normally put in 110%.
All of this is layered on top of the fact that OW2 is even more punishing to new players (of which there is an abundance) than OW1 was. There is a lot of obscured information (Numbers, Mechanics, constantly shifting technicalities with heroes, UI shrink, etc.) who can't learn the game unless they go out of their way to find necessary information outside of it (Content Creators, Wikis, reddit, forums, patch note breakdowns, etc.), resulting in a playerbase that will look to play the game w/o that information being relevant to them I.E - "casuals".
Taken at it's full face, I'd ask: what about this game could possibly convince anyone that it is worth learning to the degree that Eskay and others who have been playing for years, would want out of their matches?
The game's entire design is "off" and it isn't just one subject or area. There's multiple areas of development that need to be addressed (as befitting a PvP experience that had less than a year of development, prior to it's launch).

I think one of the biggest issues OW has is that it's mostly "solved". Outside of wide skill discrepancies or complete lack of awareness, everyone knows what happens when a tracer dives an Ana hard scoped on the tank. We all know how to counter certain characters or prevent certain Team compositions from working as effectively. I think the best way to address that is to look at what Dota 2 does. That is a game that is constantly reinventing itself adding new abilities or heroes in the game that completely upend set expectations. While the fundamentals of the game stay the same, so much of the game outside of those fundamentals completely gets upended allowing the players to feel like the game is fresh
Blizzard is so rigid in their belief for the game that we can't feel like the game is being fresh outside of external changes like the new rank system or the dps passive. I look at what happened with Mirrorwatch as a great stepping stone. Instead of it being a mode sandboxed from the rest of the game, it should have been thrown directly into the game as is to create that chaotic fresh experience. This idea of chasing a perfectly balanced game is impossible when you also add in new heroes every 4 months that can upend what we feel is a "perfect" balance

Most of the time they were toxic, they were on the enemy team which let you get used to fighting back and getting revenge. It seperated the “good guys” from the “bad guys” in your head, now the only toxicity your gonna hear, granted much less often, is on your team. Ow1 had more room for less communication, there was more of a defined goal, independent tanks and targets were more intuitively focused. Right, so it's everyone else's job to flex around you instead of just making the good pick to begin with in a game that rewards tank hero choice even more than player skill. Listen, people don't like wrecking balls for the same reason they don't like doomfist players, they're often toxic and refuse to work with the team or ever switch off if they're doing poorly. You're leaving the team with no front line so if you're not doing work then swap off. Honestly the only time you should really be playing these heroes is when you swap TO them to counter some niche scenario like a zarya bastion where a traditional frontline tank would have trouble.

If the conditions aren't right, I mostly start with Sigma, Orisa or D.Va to have a safer match up. If the enemy shows weakness I can exploit and they don't immediately counterswap, I can punish them with Ball. In lower ranks not many people know how to counter him, and those who know are likely not very good at playing his counters. That makes him an easy choice in modes like push or flash point, on maps where you need a lot of mobility. Of course I wouldn't play Wreckingball on the first point of Casine Royal. I always let my team decide their heroes first, especially my supports, so I know what kind of tank I can pick. Thank you for your criticism, but thank god I'm not a one-trick

@@unripetoast-nu4lv That's a great mentality to have. I used to take what Spilo says to heart that there's no real counters and to play into your counters etc. and while there's nothing inherently wrong with that its like, I'm playing ranked, I'm not having fun because I can't play aggressively as tank on the hero I want to play as, and my team isn't helping me at all so why suffer instead of just swapping and getting more value? Learning to play into your counters is useful, but you'll still need your team's help and if they aren't helping you then you need to find a new way to carry the game--you need to expand your tank pool and understanding there's a good tank for every situation. In a perfect world you could play what you want but the 5v5 format doesn't allow tanks to do that.

Even though overwatch originally released with plenty of low skill heroes and defensive/turtle heroes. That illari has more negatively impacted the game then any other hero because she encourages and rewards the lowest skill of play while at the same time punishing the highest skill of play. For both teams. Combined with the fact that it's another buildable. It's not some super auto win strat to play sym, torb, illari but it is annoying to play into as you spend half the match clearing buildables.

Aside from moment to moment gameplay like outplaying your opponent with skills, I think cosmetic rewards can also play into feeling rewarded that you play for. Back in Overwatch, cosmetics feel more accessible than Overwatch 2 and you can play the game to earn them. People would talk about how cool the skins are, the voicelines, the sprays, highlight intros. All of these feels very special.
But Overwatch 2 is a free to play game and the monetization feels egregious. Playing for cosmetic rewards just doesn't feel rewarding because majority of Overwatch 2 cosmetics are locked behind paywall. People would talk about cosmetics but then you get follow up comments that they're too expensive or they would need to pay for it but mainly the expensive part. And the paying part really adds up overtime. Or people would say that I don't have it or can't afford it. It discourageous people from talking about cosmetics because the system that manages these is terrible.
It is one of the ways that gets the community together because they are talking about something good in Overwatch like how cool the cosmetics are. But right now, I see complaints about the monetization and such.

Hardware ban players that are banned, for any reason. If its not permanent, don't make it permanent, time should match the ordinary ban. The tech is there, and Blizzard has access to it. They just don't care to really stop players from playing if they want to so bad. And yes I know hardware bans can be gotten arounded if that's a phrase, but the average GM simply wont do that. I would say the average GM now definitely has an alternate account.

Big chunk of smurfs come from bad mmr system, long queues and not wide enough mmr in quick play where you could test out heroes. And 5v5 is to blame here, since impact of one player is more significant and usually higher skill player takes over lobby, hence stricter mmr rules so lower or mid players can have fun, but it also puts them in their rank pool and it feels competitive for everyone anyways.

I think that all of Blizzard's efforts to "fix" toxicity have just ended up making the players more isolated from each other and it makes the game way less fun as a whole. I've been playing some COD with friends recently (looking for something new to do and never played it before, so I played the DMZ mode which my friends like) and the community there is entirely different. Everyone shit talks after literally every kill, and it's such a different feeling from Overwatch where the only people you can talk to are your teammates, and talking to them usually doesn't even benefit you. Overwatch players just sit in chat silently every single game because there's literally no point in talking, if you try to plan something nobody will go along with it, and if you criticize anyone they'll just throw your game. You can't talk to the enemies, you can't even say anything in text chat after the game because they made it send you back to the menu immediately after. All my favorite rounds of OW that I remember were the most toxic, ego-fueled games I've ever played, yet it seems like Blizzard wants players to just keep playing and feel nothing after every win or loss. Overwatch's most popular streamer that it ever had, XQC, was one of the most toxic players there was, and yet he brought millions of people to pay attention and care about the game in a way that nobody else has since. I'm not saying Overwatch needs to be COD, but anything would be better than the way it is now, it feels like a fucking isolation chamber

Blizzard effectively cut off new alt accounts from getting any good cosmetics out of the game by just playing. The more accounts they have, the more sales they make. May not be 1 to 1 but i bet its a nice chunk at the end of a quarter.
