With all the complicated athletics of the duel, they convey that the older, stronger, more ruthless Vicompte Valmont could easily kill the less-skilled music teacher Danceny; and both of them know it. Yet Valmont, sickened by his own cynical immorality and cruelty, commits suicide by letting Danceny kill him. What none of the clips of this duel show, however is the stark, terrible beauty of the last shot of the duelists from above: in the cold light of dawn, three small dark figures huddled against the dazzling white field of snow -- scarlet with with the huge stain of Valmont's blood. ❣

I have watched it many times to enjoy the subtlety of all the actors' facial expressions-- the lift of an eyebrow, the twitch of the corner of the mouth, the hint of a frown over a smile -- the farce of Cecil's losing the key in that large urn; and Valmont's disgusted expression after passing her and her disapproving mother on the stairs is hilarious.
After watching all these clips I can’t help but notice the similarities between this movie and Cruel Intentions. I must be dense since I’m only figuring this out now
