I love how a Japanese car sort of carried on the legend of the big American sedans of the 90s. These are comfy, quiet, have tons of space and that V6 moves the car well. Certainly helps that the car will be reliable as can be too.
It's a modern interpretation of the only new car I ever bought, A 1986 Buick LeSabre - FWD, V-6 mid price luxo car with great reliability. It truly is the "Japanese Buick". GM should take the lesson and go back to what they USED to do well.
I just bought one of these cars a few weeks ago because the price was good and it had low miles so I just took a chance and brought it… and I am AMAZED at how nice it is for the price this has got to be the most slept on car that I can think of. I could also not believe how fast the car is… like this is genuinely a fast car the 3.5 engine is fantastic. I honestly think it’s the best part of the car Toyota even still uses this engine currently today 17 years later. I cannot say enough good things about this car. Huge trunk space, huge interior space, it’s luxurious on the inside, it’s reliable, if you get the limited and higher model trim you get almost all the features of modern day cars in a car from 2005…. this is really a 10 out of 10 product for something that you would want to use on a regular basis. I’m happy that I got to experience this car also for the fact that Toyota has reportedly discontinued the Avalon nameplate.
Thank you for sharing! I have the "tuxedo" version of this car 2007 ES350 I've had for 3 years now and it STILL puts a smile on my face! The way that 2GR-FE V6 builds up it's power and pulls like a freight train and the features you didn't see in most cars until 2014.
Definitely a sleeper. Around here the only people driving them are wearing Covid masks while alone in the car and going 45 on the highway after taking two minutes to accelerate on the on ramp.
My 2nd gen Avalon help me with my depression during covid, by never breaking. Not the best is gas milage, but overall a reliable car with no issues, and the 1mz engine bay has quite a bit of room and is plenty fast for a daily. Also a stock plug in the back for my power tool batteries
This car kicks so much ass. A boat like monster that soaks up highway miles. It makes no performance promises, but has space, features, reliability, and a comfortable ride. The sort of things Americans used to talk about it in such high regard when referencing Cadillac or Lincoln of old.
My first car was a 1999 Avalon passed down from my grandpa. I never appreciated it when I had it, mostly due to its 16/20 MPG and a slow V6, but its ride is still smooth and superior to anything Ive driven since
I just purchased a 2005 Avalon Limited. 82,000 miles, fully loaded and in absolute mint condition. 3 very many scratches and no rips or stains in the interior. Plus it has new struts, new oil, new rotors and pads, heated and cooled seats and brand new tires. It was very well taken care of and with 280hp it moves for its size. I love that car. Just bought it 4 days ago. But 1 thing...why are there cup holders in the trunk
Great purchase 👍🏻 ❤ mine ran until over 300k KMs, if i recall correctly. Always comfy, always able to pass anyone I needed to 😁 Never noticed if my year had trunk cupholders 😂 that's funny.
Now THAT is a regular car, and one of the finest regular cars at that. It’s one of those regular cars that you forget exists, but when you remember you realize how clever it is. The Tommy Fenstermacher bit got me dead tho 😭😭
I know a freelance mechanic who owns one of these. In his exact words: "Man this thing is fast! It's got 180 on the dash and it has a supercharger!" The car is a stock avalon. I stared at him for a few seconds and just said "Sure man."
I inherited a 07 Limited and I loved it. It was comfortable and luxurious. It was a little longer than our 09 Camry. It also doesn't require premium gas like a Lexus. The rear sunshade got stuck in the up position and it couldn't keep a set of tires on the front but that's about all that was wrong with it when I traded it in at 150k.

My grandparents had two Buicks until 2003. Then they bought an Avalon. Then they bought another in 2006. As a very very very tall person (6’8”) I’ve never felt more comfortable in a back seat
In high school one of my buddies had one that was 4 or 5 times handed down. The odometer quit somewhere around 300k and the door handles were mostly all broken off but that thing had the nicest interior after all that abuse and kept going. I’d take a supercharged 90s Buick over an Avalon anyday but they are really good cars
As a Toyota Technician in 2005 the third Gen Avalons were prone to problems the 2nd generation didn't have and I always preferred the 2nd Gen for that reason. I had more early 3.5 liter V6s out on the ground getting timing covers resealed and Toyota had a major recall for a rubber hose that would fail and dump all your engine oil out on the ground. Then the VVTi Camgears would fail and later Toyota updated the parts but it required the camshafts to be changed as well and that makes these engines not worth the cost of repair 15 years later. When a 3rd gen Avalon is working correctly they are a great car but when they do break they break in a big way.
As a Toyota fanboy, I always notice Avalons... As funny as it sounds it's literally my favorite Toyota and I'm only 30 😂. I'd kill for a hybrid Avalon.
I always notice the Venza because it's such a cool wagon. A shame they killed it off and are tentatively bringing it back as a crossover. Those bastards.
Bought a 2005 Avalon T with 55 original miles! the 17 yrs old car drive like a dream! This is my Daily driver and honestly I don't give a FF about what people think!
Years, and years, and years ago, I read an article in a copy of Automobile Magazine at a doctors office that talked about “the Top 3 Senior Citizen Cars!!” And the whole point was that they were hooning big, boring sedans whose sales figures showed that 90% or more of the folks that bought them were 85 or older And number one, was the Toyota Avalon. That was so memorable for _some reason_ that it’s stuck with me ever since. So that’s the answer to the question, “who was this car for?” Old people. It was for very, very old people.
Camry is way smaller in the back seat than the Avalon, and the LS was way more expensive. The ES was at the time also Camry based than Avalon based. The Avalon was a LWB Camry. In this generation the Avalon was for people who wished they could still buy a Buick park avenue
I totally agree with the Park Avenue thing, I acquired my parent's 1999 Park Avenue in 2012 with about 92,000 on it, then drove it another 175,000 miles before trading it on a 2003 Avalon with only 70,000 miles. Both good cars, the Buick was a little larger, but the Avalon seems to hold its interior bits together better. I have put 40,000 miles on the Avalon in 3 years, and have no plans to replace it any time soon.
I don't think that should considered a dealbreaker but it 's definitely worth mentioning. It would certainly be nice if they folded down, but the trunk and the back seat are so large individually that if you can't fit something in either one of those places, then a sedan probably isn't the right type of car for you anyway.
@@cameronlovesevolveThat's right too, 2005 and 2006, they were still making the 1MZ/3MZ V6s alongside this. 2007 was when the Camry/ES finally got the 2GR

My sister takes naps in the rear reclining seats of my ‘07 Avalon Touring. It’s stupid specious and the leather seats are extremely comfortable. Just purchased the car in August last year and haven’t had any issues with it whatsoever, it’s never not started. I’ve tinted the windows to 5% and she looks beautiful. Put her on new Yokohamas and plan some more personalization in the future. (Vouge tires, new rims, starlight headliner, muffler delete) Might be a grandma car to some but it’s basically a Lexus for a Camry price and maintenance costs. 159k miles when I bought it and we all know Toyotas can last well into 200k no problem with a little TLC. Wish the front end was a bit more aggressive but besides that the car is a dream.
When I was about 19 I bought a used 2014 avalon known fully that it was an old person car. But on the used market it was a way better bargain than the comparable Lexus. Prob woulda kept it longer if not for the fwd.
I remember my dad got one of these new when I was a kid. It was a great car throughout most of my childhood. I remember he was sold on it because it had hands free calling
My roommate in college had one of these, and I kinda loved it? It was certainly the most comfortable car out of all of us (which included my E39, a Honda Civic, a VW Jetta wagon, and a ratty ass Toyota Matrix which my now-married father of a roommate still owns after 8 years), and surprisingly powerful! Also that V6 sounds way too good for the type of car that this is.
Everyone who I've met who drives an Avalon has had the character of white sandwich bread. They're the car for people who want a car more boring and cushy than the Camry, but have $3.
Yeah no I’m going to have to not agree with the whole boring car thing this is legitimately a sweet car with a powerful engine that if you punch it testing will take the hell off like a bat out of hell I don’t agree with the whole “boring car” thing some people like to throw around a boring car is a car that’s not fast and has no creature comforts that’s a boring car this thing has almost 300 hp to the front wheels reclining where is seats great luxurious looking interior and it’s a big car this is legitimately not a boring vehicle. Also the Camry isn’t boring either depending on what model you get if you get like a base model LE yeah it’s just a normal car but the V6 SE Camry‘s are actually fun cars and they look great.
@@adamrichards3174 absolutely it’s such a gem The difference in gas mileage between the V6 in a four-cylinder’s is like 1 or 2 mpg the engine just doesn’t have to work as hard to get going.
I'd much rather have the Avalon. The Cressida was a super nice engine swaddled in tacky velour, and the Avalon is an indestructible engine in a far superior car.
Highway MPG is pretty amazing for a big relatively powerful car, if it isn’t too windy you can achieve over 30mpg at 80mph. It is a great long trip car, but they made the gas tank too small.

0:55 the Avalon is made redundant by the Lexus ES, not the LS, which it shares a platform and engine with (first gen ES was Camry-based). Unfortunately the ES has gotten so expensive that the Avalon is justified, but I imagine it’s in its last generation before Toyota puts it out to pasture in favor of more expensive Camry models and SUV’s.
I was in my 20s when I wanted an Avalon. This generation of Avalon had my attention. These are great looking cars that can get up to speed quickly, and it's quite comfortable on long trips. It's also a great value for what you get, the 2GR-FE engine is buttery smooth.

I was into screaming metal, Tripp pants, black clothing and I slicked my hair similarly to late greasers. I started playing football and going to the school weight room. It's a separate little building next to the track. This building hosted a completely different culture. My family was homeless at the time and all the other kids in town have rich parents. The standard of living is so much higher here that I made the poor kids look rich. I walked into the weight lifting room wearing red and black converse and black jeans. From the age of 3 I loved worlds strongest man competition 💪. Having only lifted things as a chore I was very excited to learn and visibly made the room uncomfortable 😀. I proceeded to hoist over 300 pounds on a hex bar for reps. I was simultaneously showing up the schools mouthy tough guy. Everyone was very impressed. Some were jealous and others supportive. There was one coach there. Mod to late twenties. A veteran. Clearly juiced now that I think of it. Smaller build guy average I'd say and popular with the student athletes. He took note. And I continued to show up and improve and he just loved calling twilight. 🤣
Toyota cars being described as Japanese Buicks is soooo true seeing how they actually did copy a lot of the American cars in this country before bringing out Lexus. It's also why a lot of their cars are two toned in the 90s, because that's how cars were back in the day in this country in the 50s and they were trying to appeal to that age demographic who were then wealthy enough to buy such cars. Toyota has an amazing marketing department.
My wife’s great aunt who’s a realtor had one. Not even a year old, the dashboard was lit up like a Christmas tree. When I wanted a big front wheel drive sedan with luxurious appointments but didn’t make me seem ostentatious, I got an Impala. Avalon size, luxury, and performance for Corolla price. Zero problems and zero recalls so far.
Everything about this is accurate, except for one thing: This has more interior volume than an LS430. That is its party piece. That is the only win over the LS430. That said this is by far my favorite car I've had, and I'm looking forward to getting an LS430 next.
My dad knows an Avalon can go 27,000 miles between oil changes. My dad swapped a Buick Century, An Oldsmobile 98, and a 65 Mustang for a Camry, a Corolla, and an Avalon. Avalon is the luxury car my dad bought to brag about how cheap it was. Avalon has the best drag coefficient to suck cigarette ash out the sunroof. These were all over national car rental fleets as a “premium’’ car in the 2007-2009 timeframe. Not a bad upgrade if you could find one in the executive selection lot. I would pick one of these if I had a lot of miles ahead of me. Comfortable, decent on fuel, fit 4 fairly comfortably. It’s rental competitor, the Lucerne, was so slow with that 3800…
I got a 2015 as a premium class from Enterprise and put over 3000 miles on it over the course of 2 weeks.

So that’s the answer to the question, “who was this car for?”
Old people.
You're completely right. I think if I was able to buy a car like this back then I would have because I love the Buick Park Avenue.

This was my first car after my dad finally got a new car. I think it was the last car to be built with a cassette player.
Close- the last car with cassette was the 2010 SC430.
These never go unnoticed in my eye. Got to 135mph in one of these with some bad ignition coils. Still felt like it could do more.
A couple months after I got home I bought a new V6 Camry since I couldn't afford a (loaded) Avalon. The ride might not be as smooth as the Avalon was, but it's the best damn car I've ever had. You'll have to pry that V6 out of my cold dead hands.
Being that I actually owned one of these cars along with comfortable and decent on fuel it’s also fast like notably fast this thing will take off if you nailed the throttle great engine sorry I had a comment on the motor people like to talk about comfort and reliability but completely ignore the engine in this thing
@@Toyota4Life It's a damn good engine and is definitely at the upper limit of what FWD can handle without a limited slip differential. Yeah yeah I know a turbo 4 is faster and gets 2 more MPG, but give me this V6 any day. It's properly quick while also being incredibly smooth and refined. It is completely untaxed in everyday driving, happily chugging along at low RPMs. At the same time if you give it a little extra throttle it lets you know it'll gladly say hello to the redline without hesitation.
I bought this car new in 2005. I was 30 years old and traded a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue after I left working for GM. I kept the Avalon until 2020 when the AC evaporator failed and no one would fix it. This was the best car I ever owned. The ride was amazing and it had power when you needed it. Also, no one looked at this car. Mine was a Limited in Titanium. I love my 2020 RAV-4 TRD Off Road but my Avalon was the Interstate King! So much room in the back and reclining seats! Silky smooth power.I totally rocked this hidden gem. I was 30 and driving an Avalon! lol. Man do I miss that car.
I just bought a 07 avalon touring 250k miles super clean car only problem is it consumes alot of gas average mpg is 16. Max distance on a full tank is 270 miles. Thats pretty horrible considering I'm a really slow driver, might trade it for something else...
I have the same predicament
Just bought a 2006 avalon XL w 76,000 on it . Was a grandma and traded it for a minivan in Wisconsin. I did brakes n rotors weathertech mats and a new alternator on it. Power steering hose was dripping a bit but I added an extra clamp to fix it. Very roomy front n back , accelerates strong with a lot of torque. My wife is going to drive it till the wheels fall off.
Nice! Love the info shared in this one, pretty much as regular as it can get.
I drive a 2016 Limited. Talk about an identity crisis; smooth and dippy around the corners, but torque steer during passing and off the line. Hands down, my favorite car that I've owned.
