Some of you need to take the time & research the facts. The E9 was big in its day up against GM's, 3406B's etc so dont compare it to C15's, Signatures & so on. The E9@500hp only produced 1660ft/lb of torque not 1850 & 2050 like the newer 6 cylinder engines so grossing 38t with the drag of 48 tyres under float & dolly may steady er up abit. Beautiful, unmistakable sound & legends of the road.
@@blackflagqwerty Yeah I remember when Detroit Diesel Silver Series 8V92TTA DDEC came out with 475hp. In 1988 I nearly went halves in a secondhand W series KW with new a new Silver and I even remember the price being $60k. The engine had no mileage and was new. I agonized over the decision. I said no because the other half of the operation was a useless lazy bastard who relied on people like me to get by in life and I correctly reasoned I'd end up doing all the work. Added to that he had bad body odour which would have made me angry every day. I miss that I never drove a 2 stroke Detroit in anger though. Despite what all the RUclips experts say about Detroits having a narrow powerband, in pull down tests Dyno Smith YT channel shows the torque band of these engines is very broad compared to even modern 4 stroke Diesels and not narrow at all, though to be fair less than the torque of modern 35psi boost inline 6s. A good Silver might just crack 1400ft/lbs but holds 80% of that torque from 1700 down to 900rpm. You'd expect that since being 2 stroke because they have double the power strokes. For example my (not mine but company) Sig Cummins has over 2000ft/lbs but the torque goes right out of it below 1150rpm and over 1400rpm, though the power of it incredibly impressive esp on hills. Fully loaded I'm astonished at what it passes on hills and not just crawl past at 1-2kays but like 30kmh.
@@ThePaulv12 I would have expected the two stroke to have double the power stroke. The Atkinson twin steer with a 3000 litre fuel tank and 2000 litre water tank integrated in body with 20 feet to spare I drove for Gorey and Cole Drilling had twin turbos and a super charger. 8v92TA (?) 22 Spicer and it hauled arse! I'd catch empty crates heading north through the hills from Alice Springs with two 40 foot flat tops over loaded with RC drill rods, mud mix etc. We got caught once by the scaleys, 30t over weight on the whole lot.
I used to drive those old Mack Superliners and in their day they were one of the most popular road train prime movers available. Everyone knew when a Superliner was coming from that great burbling, barking exhaust pipe note. The Toowomba Range was just one a couple of pretty daunting jump ups coming off the coastal plains of Queensland and climbing up onto the inland plains. The Drummond Range inland from Gladstone / Rockhampton used to make me turn the radio down and start concentrating and dragging doubles up or down the old Mingela Range in north Queensland was a real learning experience. Roads and driving conditions are just not the way they used to be and that's a good thing. I learned the transport game by travelling with my Dad all over most parts of Western Australia, especially the Gascoyne and Pilbara and it was a tough job back then. Coming up from Perth in those days, when the bitumen ended at Northampton and stayed that way for years, you had to be pretty inventive and full of initiative to get home some times. Floods, bush fires, dust storms, break downs and even tyre fires were just some of the problems old time Aussie truckies faced. My Dad and his mate once put out a tyre fire by smashing in the top of a wooden keg of beer with an axe and throwing the contents on the fire.
What mighty, mighty trucks the old Superliners were in their day. You knew you were in something special if you found yourself looking out over a bonnet that resembles the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
What they're taking as grinding is the turbo's dumping boost and the Maxi-torque tranny splitting gears. If they never run a Mack tranny they'd have to learn how to shift all over again. I learned how to drive in a 93 Mack Super-Liner with a V8 and a 18 speed Maxi-torque. I'll never forget that sound.
Yes!! I'm a Mack V8E9 fan!!! These superdogs(superliners) used to dominate the construction & heavyhaul industry back in NY where I used to live!! If I was a truck driver, I would love to be behind the wheel of these high horsepowered beasts!!!
What great old honest trucks the the Super Liners were. Very basic but functional in the cab with a great gearbox and power to burn. That's a beautiful truck, That's a beautiful sound. I love your work mate, Thanks for posting the video. This is what aussie truckin is all about. These machine's, and the men who drove them
I'm from the states, so this whole video had me all twisted around sideways. The way they drive over there makes me cringe lol. Aside from that, I dunno anything about the speed limits there, why this truck sounds like its running at such high rpms, with what i consider to be an average weight load, sounds as though its struggling so hard, and sounds like the jake brake is on the whole time. Dunno anything about macks, I'm a Peterbilt and Caterpillar guy. But back in my days of running out in the western US, Grapevine, Cabbage Mtn, even the Gorge, I've driven Petes/Cats that would eat this truck up going up those grades, with the same equivalent motors. This is new to me. It sounds awesome. Looks badass, I'd like to drive one just to see what the fuss is about lol.
Comes in at a bit over 83700lbs and the climb is a 10 degree slope pretty much the whole way bar the saddle which is the bit in the middle where it levels out for a bit before starting the climb again. And around 2 1/2 miles from bottom to top.
What the video doesn't convey very well is just how steep the Towoomba Range is, the B-double tanker he passes at the 1 minute mark is probably full weight or close to it (around 60t), it's a Mack as well (although more modern) which, if it's running the Mack motor either 525hp or, if he's shit outta luck... a 475hp jobbie. Either way he's only cruising up there around 30kph (~19mph). Same again for the steel hauler at 4:40, bloody Mack Magnum (rebadged Renault P.O.S) which might be kickin the 580 signature if he's lucky, still under 40kph with a 45 ton load.
Im driving a western star, 525 cat, 18 speed hauling max load of 66120kg(145780 lbs)[tree length pine trees - 15 foot tree overhang, back of trailer] My boss has a 1979 DM-895SX mack (we affectionately call "senior" because of the truck's age) - w/a cranked 500 E9 v-8 thats over 600hp and will eat a 600DD16's lunch.
What you can't see is the steepness of the Range - some points there have an approximately 20% grade. Mind you, the whole outfit (the SuperLiner, the 2x8 dolly and 4x8 "swingwing" low-loader) is grossing 38 tonnes
I spent many a year and been a many mile behind one of those huge hoods. Every time i hear a v8 mack i get a smile on my face
Yeh! Hes keeping the revs up and as much momentum not lost as he can. Good shifting.

525hp in the 1980's was a phenomenal amount of power.

You're leavin' those slower guys in your diesel fumes (pardon the pun!!!) - mate they almost seem stationary!
Joe - avid V8 Mack truck fan!
Super Mutt !! Boy she sounds strong. Beautiful !!
When the q'land gov gets around to building the new rd up the toowoomba range, this section will be history!
GREAT VIDEO! I have a 1991 Superliner RW753...warmed up 425 3406 CAT motor 8" straight pipes and an 18speed...I'll have to send you a note when I post a video, which will be soon!
Love the paint job on this Superdog! Great sound...love for the V8!
Take my hat off to you guys, you do a tough job.

Ace, just ACE. Thanks for uploading :)
Jeez, you gotta be happy about going past a truck towing a load of holes:-))))
prison bus went past at 547 hahahah on their way to the lockup, cant beat the sound of the mack.
Well, this trucker can't be fired as he owns the truck he is driving!
That's a beautiful truck, That's a beautiful sound.
I love your work mate, Thanks for posting the video.
This is what aussie truckin is all about. These machine's, and the men who drove them
I love this Mack V8 what a great sound!
Hey,
If I ever get up to HHA's depot, I'll be going for a run in this Mack - will let ya know how it feels!
Joe
Mack Superliner, coolest truck out there.
It might only be 38 Tonne, but I don't know what grade he's pulling.. V8's are 2 stroke, therefore rev a lot higher top make power..
