  • In this episode of TFBTV, James talks about five guns that he believes are under the radar in terms of being viable concealed carry firearms. While there are a lot of great and common concealed carry options out there like the Glock 43, Kahr CM9, Ruger LCP, (and while there are a lot more than five underrated concealed carry pistols, so...sequel?), all of these are worth a look even if they are niche guns geared towards users with particular needs.

    For my concealed carry I usually go with the Nerf Jolt. It does print quite a bit but it has great accuracy, no recoil, and plenty of knockdown power.

    I don't know what to comment so i think i'll just drop this french fries recipe
    Ingredients:
    - 2 1/2 pounds russet potatoes
    - peeled 1 cup all-purpose flour
    - 1 teaspoon garlic salt
    - 1 teaspoon onion salt
    - 1 teaspoon salt
    - 1 teaspoon paprika
    - 1/2 cup water, or as needed
    - 1 cup vegetable oil for frying
    1) Slice potatoes into French fries, and place into cold water so they won't turn brown while you prepare the oil.
    2) Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. While the oil is heating, sift the flour, garlic salt, onion salt, (regular) salt, and paprika into a large bowl. Gradually stir in enough water so that the mixture can be drizzled from a spoon.
    3) Dip potato slices into the batter one at a time, and place in the hot oil so they are not touching at first. The fries must be placed into the skillet one at a time, or they will clump together. Fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

      Paul Baquirin I have to agree with you! I know a few troopers and deputies that carry them for off duty weapons and recommend them. Plus the 709/740 is changing minds too.
      The 740 and PT111 G2 I shot both have that weird ass trigger! Way too much slack for me, but I was able to get as good hits as my G43 or Shield. So it's just a personal issue. But I would carry either and not worry about them.
      I would but either the 709/740 or PT11 G2 over a SCCY CBX2. And they are about the same price.

    • @tfbtv
      @tfbtv  7 лет назад +10

      This is a fair question, but it has nothing to do with production, it's the fact that the Mak is no longer the bargain it used to be at $300 for a well-worn one. There are smaller, lighter, cheaper guns that are just as powerful. I love the Mak, but when the supply dried up and with advancing technology and decreasing prices, it's getting left behind. The Boberg did not rip the rims off shells it would leave the bullet behind when extracting the round if the shell was not crimped around the bullet. So you need to use certain makes of ammunition. The idea is great the extra barrel length makes all the difference, besides the pistol being smaller.

    Very interesting list. I was pleasantly surprised to see some actual obscure (at least to me) guns. I'm not a big fan of the Chiappa Rhino on the list though or really any .357 out of a 2" barrel simply because the velocity drop off in such a short barrel removes all the advantages of carrying a normally great round. Might as well pack a Glock 26 with +P ammo. It's 2 oz's lighter, hundreds of dollars cheaper, and carries 5 more rounds with similar ballistics.

    • @jaythus3181
      @jaythus3181 2 года назад

      Actually the difference between a 2 inch 357 revolver and a 3 inch 9 mm (since semi auto pistols include chamber in barrel length) is a lot greater than you'd think. 9mm +p would make up the difference some but wouldn't get it 100% from what I have seen. Haven't tested it personally since i don't have a chronograph but considering the difference between 9mm and 357 mag in the glock 19 size range it is safe to say it continues in smaller sizes but on a smaller scale. Obviously the semi auto is going to have a greater capacity but total potential force carried is similar or leans in the revolvers favor even with the capacity difference.

Sure, there are newer systems out there, but you fight with what you train with. I don't feel at all under gunned with a double stack .380. At the time it was 250.00 bucks NIB out the door. Thanks for showing the Chiappa Rhino some love. Watching Massad Ayoob nail targets at a pretty long range with this thing impressed me fairly on. (Of course the good shooters can do the same with any good quality snub-nosed revolver.) Bringing the barrel more in line with the hold worked well for the ARs and getting it into a pistol was pretty ingenious. (Also the flat-sided cylinder to reduce width and ease carry.)

    James, nice to hear from another P9 Covert fan. I have one and it is a wonderful pistol. I know that earlier this year, a number of people, including myself, corresponded with Justin Moon about re-introducing the Covert and were given a flat "No" with no reason given. I'm told by someone in a position to know that the model was discontinued because it hurt sales of both the PM9 and the P9 at the time. In short, it was an idea that was just too good.
    I carry mine daily in a pocket loaded with 7 rounds in it. The extra .4 inch of barrel doesn't matter in terms of concealment and the gun even fits in the same DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster as the PM9 or CM9. When I carry it in the waistband, I switch to a 7 round magazine with the extended base pad for a total of 8 rounds in-gun and am improved draw. This from a gun introduced more than 15 years ago.
    But there is one more advantage other than sight radius and slightly higher velocity over the shorter gun, and that is the recoil spring system. It is the single wound spring system found on the larger P9, and the slide is noticeably easier to rack than the one on a PM9 or CM9. This is a big deal to us old guys with arthritis. The gun also feels better to me when I shoot it next to a CM9 that I own.
    If you are thinking of looking for an original P9 Covert, be prepared to be looking a while. As the saying goes, "Them that has, keeps." Also there is a slight downside and that is if you plan to install night sights. All the original Coverts had the "old style" slide, and the rear night sight is no longer made for them by anyone. I found this out in the course of a year long search, and ordering from a few suppliers who did not know the difference and advertised them incorrectly. Finally Kahr did offer a very limited supply of the front night sight only for $30 on their website so I got one and decided to be happy with that.
    I want another one of these guns, because it is one of the most useful firearms I own and I have accumulated ten magazines for it. I'm thinking that a new CW9 and a hacksaw are in my future. Good luck on finding one for yourself.

    I really liked all of your picks and I'm especially glad you included the Chiappa and the G36 but I'm wondering why you didn't include the PT111 G2. My guess is you figured you'd ticked off enough people already (but you might not like the trigger pull, it doesn't bother me because of the nice groups I get).

      TFB TV James, I thought they were junk too (a friend had a Taurus that was "not so good" he was trying to get rid of). Lately I'd been seeing some great reviews on the PT111 G2 (except for the DA trigger pull) and then I saw a guy at one of our local ranges with one (what tipped me off was his sunglasses, baseball cap and hoodie with the hood up. Odd at an indoor range). He had some good groups from his PT111. After seeing a PT111 for sale at a $220 price (NIB) I decided to see if my wife still loved me. I've got about 100 rounds through it now (still married too) with no FF or FE and some really good groups. The DA trigger is a nonissue for me (no failure to fire yet but if I do; tap, rack) and the SA trigger is crisp. The magazine springs are made for superman but we've got Uplula for that. Give the PT111 G2 a try it gave me hope for Taurus.

    AND....….he has the courage to state what many of us already know BERSA MAKES A GREAT GUN PERIOD. Not "for the money" as in value although that is nice too but I have 2 and I LOVE them. They don't have the fit and finish of the high end weapons but it never effects functionality. I don't recall ever having to perform immediate action on a FTF with my thunder .380 OR my Thunder9

    Had no idea Bersa would've made it at the top. Got my Bersa. 380 Thunder Plus as my every day carry. Sorry you wasted your money on a glock when you could've bout two Bersas, or a really nice SIG SAUER. Glocks are the hi points of peasants. "Bruce Willis used it before his band so it must be good". I think for concealed carry, short range life on the line someone draws on you, I would go for a .357 revolver. Guaranteed to work unless you have somehow let it rust.

    • @jaythus3181
      @jaythus3181 2 года назад

      Not guaranteed but pretty close. If you get something blocking the hammer you're sorta screwed and hang fires can still happen and are more serious in revolvers than semi autos. I prefer revolvers but they aren't completely mythical. They pack more force per round and hold up better to neglect (ie not properly maintained with lube and the like) where semi autos pack less force per round and hold up better to abuse (ie the stupid sand and mud test people do to show superiority of certain firearms that are likely just gonna sit in your holster and at worst get dropped into a slight amount of mud or sand that youll wipe off instead of caked in it). Total force is about the same but i trust a revolver over a semi auto personally due to an epidemic of crackheads in my area that are immune to pain and have unlimited energy as well as most of my hobbies being outdoors so i would prefer 357 mag over 9mm when it comes to a mountain lion since 10 mm is rare in my area and 44 mag is expensive.

    I got a Rhino 60DS, had it only a couple months and put MAYBE 100 rounds in it before I experienced a malfunction at the range. Cylinder locking up, hammer not engaging. Took it home, looked inside and the internal hammer had broken. To their credit, Chiappa fixed it free of charge (it was within warranty) and their customer service was great. They even still fixed it for free after I took too long to send it back (I was in the middle of a move). Maybe I just got a fluke and I haven't had any problems since, but it wrecked any confidence I might have had on it as a concealed carry

    I like my Colt Detective. For serious work, the PA-63 meets all requirements, that is, decent stopping power, slimline, thin...and, plentiful cheap ammo, at $99.00 ea. lol, per half a dozen from J&G, someone's evidence room is fine by me, take your time SAO, but 700 to 1,000 dollar pistols sitting on a lockup shelf sucks.
    I prefer a hammer, but for striker crowd, the Taurus Pt111 Gen 2 gets rave reviews, gets it done, again, at cheap price.
    I had two, a 40 and 9mm, daughter took the 9.
    SportsmanSupply has a tempting CZ, threaded bbl., temptations. Good thing these don't fight each other over jealousy in the safe.

      ok, with a good smith, some new springs, that PA-63 is my go to.
      I have a friend who has a tiny .25 pocket pistol given to him by his son. The young man sent it off three times before he was satisfied with the trigger.
      I'd never think .25, but it's a pocket pistol. If you were blindfolded, handed the pocket toy, you'd swear it was a 1,000 dollar plus custom.
      Best trigger I ever had? That stainless Smith Model 66, short bbl., it had a awesome but dangerous trigger if you weren't aware. Wish I had it back, but it was far from a conceal and carry.
      I love crisp, no travel, smooth racking semi. Lol, lay your 9x18 Markarov mags in the sun at the range, lol, that little bitc....uh, bad word, will eat your butt up. In an adrenalin stimulated situation, I have never been conscious of recoil.
      Appreciate not being banned.

      haha I'd never ban you guys for disagreeing with me, especially when it's a comment that actually has some thought behind it. I'd never think .25 (too small) and if I am going to carry a gun, I'd rather pay a lot extra and, even if I never see it again after an incident, I'd rather it be because it worked, not because it didn't. - James

      When I was young, back in the day, coming and going JFK, and assorted down town streets like Philly, all over the map, my conceal and carry was a bad ass gold plated Cross pen.
      Always made it thru secutity, was basically a CQB weapon, but I was blessed with short muscle fibers, which means I had fast hands, plus knew how to drive a punch thru your target.
      Eyes were my double tap. Reality.
      Perhaps not as effective these days in z bad chicongo neighborhood, agreed, plus, some of us geeze, ain't as CQB as we used to be.

It's 4.3 oz heavier (weight is 28.3 oz), and 0.125 inches longer (length is 6.625"), than the Rhino 20DS, but *it holds 7*, and it's made of all stainless steel. Why go with a Bersa BP9 when you can go with a dependable S&W Shields which has the same / better benefits. 3. I believe the S&W 9 Compact is the best all around CC pistol. Has a shorter grin than the Shield (and most other pistols) sonitvis easy to pocket carry. It holds 12 rounds and can take the full size M&P mag for a 17 round back up. Fun video. The Bersa suffers from >$40 extra mags.
    The finish could be taken care of by the Hawaiian silicone oil treatment(degrease,rinse with boiling water,apply silicone oil,let cool). This fills in the pores of the metal and doesn't allow water to enter to cause rust.
