I don't understand hate comments. If you can't say something nice then write a proper letter and post it. BTW, do you guys have a PO Box? No reason....
Farscape and especially Babylon 5 have a lot of moving parts. It would be beneficial for them to keep up on these every week. Firefly and Buffy may be easier, but how Target Audience is going work TOS, it's animated series, and movies into all of this is creating concern not hate.
@@clwnprnce1837 Especially Babylon 5. It is not a show to walk away from. The most difficult part is letting this complicated intricate show take its time to set up the moving parts.
@@dunringill1747And the casting you would never expect, too: Walter Keonig is masterful as Bester. Who would have thought Chekov would make a great villain?
So I was at DragonCon after this came out and as you can imagine there were Dr Horribles everywhere. But my favorite was the trio of cowboys that everytime they ran into a Dr Horrible would surround him and sing the Bad Horse song. Brilliant.
How funny. A friend of mine dressed as Dr. Horrible and got a photo op with Nathan.
I’m actually probably going to DragonCon this year and was excited to see Nathan Fillion on the guest list! I love how he is able to play absolute jerks so well. He was also great as Jacq Snicket
That's actually kinda sweet lol, I love goofy positive fandom interactions like that
The poignancy of “Here lies everything, the world I wanted at my feet” as he’s staring down at Penny’s body just gives me goosebumps every time.
Dr. Horrible got everything he wanted, and it only cost a Penny. I'm sorry, I can't help myself...
This was filmed during the writer's strike and the directors strike
This was Joss basically saying "hey you guys wanna help me make a stupid musical?"
Of course they said yes
Nathan Fillion didn’t even need to know anything about the project to get on board. On the commentary (the serious one, not the musical) he said that when he saw Joss was calling him, he picked up the phone and the first thing he said was “the answer is yes.”
...and then instead of a stupid musical they made an epic tragedy!
My coworkers and I gathered around the computer for every new episode. I hated the ending, but the more I thought about it, it couldn’t have ended any other way.
Trivia: Whedon has commented that he made more money from Dr. Horrible than he did directing The Avengers.
Doctor Horrible got everything he wanted, and all it cost him was a Penny.
There is a detail in the music that I just absolutely love; in "Slipping", the song Billy sings after he has revealed himself at the opening of the homeless shelter, he sings:
"Then I win, then I get
everything I ever-
Whedon and his friends got together and made a low-budget version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing just for funzies on a break from filming The Avengers, IIRC. It was pretty good.
Yup. Shot the entire play in like 12 days. He financed it himself, too.
I think it’s terrific.
I'm so glad that you guys reaction to this! Among my favorite scenes is when the freeze ray wears out and "Captain Hammer" feels compelled to finish the final word of the song he was singing when he was frozen 5 minutes earlier. "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!"
I’m still sad Dr. Horrible 2 never got made.
“Bad Horse” was my ringtone for years, and this may have inspired me to bring it back lol
The short version of the Horrible theme is still my ringtone.
@@donsample1002 Mine is the Buffy theme now, so I really didn’t stray far :)
Dr. Horrible was my introduction to Felicia Day. After this came out I had to watch her web series "The Guild".
Perhaps of some interest: Dr. Horrible's jacket is the one that Simon wears in "Ariel". And the two newscasters are David Fury and Marti Noxon, who are writers/producers on Buffy (where they also sing).
One of the Firefly props was inverted for use in his lab.
Yes, in the Buffy musical, David Fury was the mustard guy and Marti Noxin was the parking ticket lady.
Doctor Horrible received everything he ever wanted, and all it cost was a single Penny.
I love how this video starts off with you describing NPH as someone with range who can be a serious/sad character, comic relief, or a compelling villian and he is all thee ib this one webseries haha.
This is such a great musical; the storytelling and ending are just so emotional.
I NEED more reactors to see this. Outstanding little piece of work.
Thanks Target Audience, I am going to be singing these songs all weekend . 😉🎤❤
Considering that this was made during a writer's strike in 2008, it's held up pretty well.
I always thought that DH was initially wanting to be "evil" out of frustration, rebellion, and anger -- but was too softhearted at the core to truly commit. And then the events that transpire (not giving him a pass, but one can understand his motivations) turn him to *true* evil. I found it actually more believable than Anakin's fall. To be fair, he had a head start on it from the beginning.
I always loved that his name was Captain Hammer, because he's such a tool. (Sorry. Lol.)
"Captain Hammer will save us." A lot like the last sentence about Winston in 1984, "he loved Big Brother"
This is one of my favorite musical anythings and I'm not really the biggest on musicals. Glad to see you guys check this out.
If you enjoyed Dr. Horrible, you should try out the Commentary to Dr. Horrible...which is basically the sequel and has a lot of great music and comedy in its own right.
@@WereMike Holy crap, thank you, Mike! I watched this about the time it came out, but have not heard about the commentary at all. Thanks so much~
YES!!! I’m so glad y’all did this. It’s one of my absolute favorite musicals and no one EVER reacts to it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is a great project, so creative. Joss Whedon is definitely one of the most creative minds out there for filmmaking. "Dr. Horrible got into the Evil League of Evil and all it cost him was a pretty Penny." was a great summary of what happened. Some of the musical numbers are in my playlist to listen to normally like Brand New Day. This is not my favourite musical but it is up there. I would love to see a second one where he goes all Doctor Frankenstein and tries to revive Penny.
I think that was the plan - until the downfall... Which sucks because now would be the perfect time, with Writer's strike 2 going on.
Before the MCU, Joss had written some X-Men comics. He already had ties to Marvel.
Felicia Day was previously the creator and lead in the web series The Guild, a spoof of World of Warcraft. See the music video they made of "Do You Want to Date My Avatar" from the series. Maurissa Tancheron was in that as well. Her and her husband Jed Wheedon (Jed and Zack are Joss' brothers) were writers on The Guild, co-wrote Dr. Horrible, and later were showrunners for MCU's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Felicia Day and Nathan both acted on Buffy S7 (final season) after Firefly was canceled. The news anchors are Buffy and Angel writers David Fury and Marti Noxon. Marti was essentially in charge of Buffy while Joss was doing Firefly.
Dr Horrible got everything he ever wanted. And it only cost him a single Penny.
NPH recently joined Doctor Who as a villain, as well. Hasn't aired yet, though.
The amazing thing about this is how it is on the one hand super (pun intended) goofy and ridiculous, but at the same time intensely emotional and impactful. The songs play a big part in pulling that off, I think; music can convey emotions sometimes more effectively than spoken dialogue, in a stylized way.
And that rug pull at the final line ("a thing"). Yow!
For those who loved Dr.Horrible and don't know, go look for Commentary: The Musical! It's Joss and and the actors doing commentary for the movie, but all in song form. It's Horribly Amazing.
Jed Whedon and his wife Marissa (producers on this), went on to produce 7 seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Dr. H got everything he ever wanted, and all it cost him was a Penny
I remember when this first aired ... all of my friends were going nuts waiting for the next episode (which disturbs me to hear y'all talking about how young y'all were when this released) ... F**K I'M OLD!!! ... !!!
It's BRILLIANT ... I've watched it hundreds of times since it first released ... bought it on DVD / BluRay ... bought the CD soundtrack and played it in my car ... downloaded the soundtrack to play on my mobile device. (Can ya tell I'm a BIT of a fan?)
There's been talk for YEARS now about a sequel to this series... even after all this time... I would STILL pay money to watch that
I heard about it between the releases of Part 1 and Part 2. It made news because the initial release had so many viewers it crashed the server.
This is an underappreciated bit of work. It's easy to forget how short it is, it feels much more epic.
It’s cool you guys covered this movie it tends to fly under the radar.
My kid & I used to sing along when I was driving her to and from school.
She just last week took my Blu-ray to a sleepover. Apparently all her friends dug it.
I hope one of you boyz had the good sense to watch The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. when you were kids. I think you both would enjoy this, somehow, fantastic forgotten show.
Yes! Such a good show!
Bruce Campbell doing Wild Wild West with a touch of sci-fi; brilliant premise.
Alex, I was WAITING for the moment when Nathan Fillion first pops onto the screen to see your reaction! You did not disappoint. 😄😆
The DVD (and I hope the Blu-Ray) has a commentary track with all new songs. It's absolutely brilliant! There's also a nonmusical commentary that's pretty good too.
Re: Joss Whedon’s career, he’s said that he made more money from this than from The Avengers. That’s what you get for being a producer rather than just a writer/director!
The Commentary Musical is amazing and almost better than the songs in original movie. Also fun to watch it on DVD along with the movie.
Thank you! I never knew this existed
It is pure genius and hilarious.
Really glad you reacted to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along. I love this musical. Where's Star Trek?
I saw the 8-bit version from @DoctorOctoroc first, and then watched the original. Loved both, and had to sing-a-long with the reaction vid.
I bought the DVD to support it. Captain Hammer shirts would appear on dudes around the convention circuit. I love the Bad Horse letter bits. Great discussion after the viewing. And really cool hearing how this affected Josh into checking out other superhero stuff.
I can't believe you guys are doing this one. Laughed my ass off when I first watched it; this was the first thing I ever saw Felecia Day in and I've loved her ever since.
I highly recommend you making your friend see "Commontary the musical" from the DVD set. If you haven't watched it yourself yet, it is funnier than the original movie.
You guys should try Repo the Genetic Opera. It's outlandish, and its a great deal of fun.
First video of yours that I’ve caught, and clicked immediately to see so,some reacting to one of my all-time favourites! Thanks for the laughs! 😂
For someone who “hates musicals”, I’d watch Hamilton (on Disney+) if you haven’t already. I’d love to see that reaction!
Oh. My gosh! I didn't know I needed this in my life. Thank you so much for this reaction.
I can't express how much the success of Dr. Horrible contributed to the switch to streaming and online content.
Dude, Alex, why would you be drinking during this show?? You were * that * that close to doing a spit take on the air 🤣
It's so worth listening to the Commentary...which is just as good if not better than the main show. If I recall correctly, Dr. Horrible was created during the writer's strike and was done with handheld RED cameras and mixed and edited at the Whedon household. This was a labor of love and creativity during a downtime for the Hollywood industry. (Almost like a pre-pandemic experiment!)
You guys are the best! Thanks! I love every minute of Dr.Horrible. Thanks for reacting to this.
There is still talk of another one and all of the principles have agreed to return the last it was reported.
Now you have to watch Buffy or at least the episode "Once More With Feeling".
Felicia Day had her own web series call The Guild about a group of online gamers. They did a few music videos including "I'm the One That's Cool" and "Do You Want to Date My Avatar". She also appeared in the final season of Whedon's series Dollhouse.
If you want to see yet another side of Fillion, check out Whedon's film adaptation of Shakespeare's " Much Ado About Nothing". Fillion has a small but amusing role and pretty much steals all of his scenes. This was another project Whedon self financed and filmed at his house with many of the casts from his TV series starring.
BTW Whedon actually wrote comics for Marvel. His run on Astonishing X-Men is very entertaining.
The first two acts were published free to the public but part three was paywalled… it made a crap ton of money
The intro music is what I still use for my son’s ring tone
wait? were I watched it for free on the official website, maybe because I wasn't in the states?
One of the best things in real life is sharing something you love with a good friend, and seeing them love it to. :)
The redhead is felicia day, she's used to do a lot of geek and sundry shows because she owned it in 2012, if you like table top games, retro games she's has old co-optitude and tabletop shows. I love them they are a lot of fun. Also you might a web series with her in it called "legend of neil" it's a legend of zelda parody it's kinda funny
And The Guild.
There's a video somewhere of some guys coming up behind her and singing Bad Horse. It's the sort of thing that could have been horrific levels of cringe, but she completely plays along and makes it work.
I actually first saw Felicia Day in her YT web series "The Guild" - definitely worth checking out!
@@ernesthakey3396 I actually own all 6 seasons on physical media of the guild, it's a great fun show
@@gregc6107 awesome!
I saw Felicia the first time in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Liked her there and whished she would have had more screentime.
This is why I keep urging them to return to Buffy. Whedon quickly achieves this level of quality in the second season of Buffy!
Bad Horse = he's SO bad... he even signs off on his phone calls!!
The guys from South Park wrote Cannibal the Musical which spoofs so many musical tropes, it's amazing. Similar, you might enjoy.
Let's build a snoman
I took the end shot to mean that he did NOT actually join E.L.E. and become the big super-villain he wanted to be, rather it was all in his head and we see that he lost all drive because of losing Penny and just went into a depressed stupor. Was I overthinking it?
I believe in death of the author so whatever interpretation is best for you! I personally think he puts on the “Dr. Horrible” personality and is the super-villain then comes home and is miserable which I think is a relatable message for anyone who achieves the “fame” they thought they wanted but at a high personal cost. - Josh
I know Felicia Day from Supernatural, great to see her in this!
After watching the reaction, I feel compelled to again recommend The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals by Team Starkid. It’s very much the same vibe, though it has more of a campy, b-horror feel to it.
I loved this when it came out, tried to watch it with my wife, and just because it was on the Internet, she dismissed it and declined to watch. I may try again now.
Felicia Day is great all around, and I mainly know her teaming up will Will Wheaton on a RUclips channel where he did his “Tabletop” gaming show, and also as the fairy from the Internet series “Legend of Neil.”
She was also great on Supernatural (they so under-used her on that), The Magicians, Buffy, and her web-show The Guild (where she does more singing for promo for the show).
Captain Hammer reminds me of Homelander a bit
Might be interesting to listen to the commentary.
He got the whole world, and it only cost him a penny 😥
Honest to G*d truth, was thinking the other day you guys should do this one. Love it! "My Eyes" is one of those songs I play when I need a emotional boost.
If y'all like musicals with comedy, you absolutely NEED to see Singin' in the Rain, if you haven't already. It is HILARIOUS! It's famous for a reason, but that abundance of humor surprised me the first time I saw it.
Consider reacting to the commentary: the musical. It is brill.
One of the greatest things ever (I keep hoping we get a sequel what with the new WGA strike).
Haven't seen a reaction to this before and now I see Star Trek and Firefly in the list....Subscribed! 👍✌❤
Side Note: This is the production that cemented what I assume will be a life-long crush on Felicia Day. 😍
Yay!! Fun fact (at least to me) my super talented cousin is in the extra material with his preacher puppet. 😉
I wonder if Joss, way down inside, has a real fantasy of creating a genuine, Broadway style, non super hero universe , musical? Has anybody ever asked him?
This came out the same year as The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and The Incredible Hulk. Not to mention all the animated stuff that came out that year.
I haven't seen this in years (and I too have it on DVD)! Thanks for reminding me how freaking funny and entertaining (and sad) it is. I love the songs, so now you know I'm going to have to listen to it the rest of the day. 😉
It hurt me when you said this was your introduction to both Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. I have been a fan of NPH since Doogie Howser in 1989 and Nathan Fillion (and Ryan Reynolds) since Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place in 1998.
I missed, "We do the weird stuff." 😢
I wish the avengers had been as smart and self aware as this.
16:37 The two news casters were two writers on Buffy. The lady is Marti Noxon and the gent's name slips my mind at the moment.
David Fury
Don't know if you guys are taking votes from the youtube comments, but it'd be great if you could react to all of Buffy. I know you were a bit lukewarm on the pilot, but the show gets to some really high high-points eventually.
Relatedly, there's a very sneaky special cameo in the scene at the homeless centre opening ceremony that you might have missed first time round...
I LOVE THIS REACTION SO MUCH!!! I Adore Doctor Horrible, and watching the reaction was fantastic. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
In addition to the musical commentary, there are also the Evil League of Evil auditions sent in by fans, several of which are well worth watching.
COMMENTARY
The songs in _Commentary!_ the musical commentary track for this, are even better. It’s a very meta commentary on commentaries.
I'm still hoping you'll continue with "Buffy"....
Also, since it was mentioned early in the video, I highly recommend "Starship Troopers"
We will continue
WOULD YOU LIKE TO.KNOW MORE?
How about "the guild" next? if we are doibg amazing but old youtube content?
Commentary The musical is as good as the actual movie itself.
Liking/not liking musicals shouldn't be considered. "Musical" isn't a genre, but a medium like theatre, literature, movies or opera. It's like saying you don't like books because you haven't read anything you liked, unless turning pages and looking at print is offensive to you.
I didn't get musicals until I saw it like another way of telling a story. See every musical number as something like a parentheses in the story. Like when dialogue in a book can be paused by a whole section inserted to explain how one person thinks and feels in that moment. Sometimes that can go on for pages, but then the dialogue continues and that moment didn't take any time in the storyline, but was just to explaining to the reader. Or like in an opera, when a performer starts an aria telling the audience that this is significant because of something that happened to them earlier in life they just remembered. This can go on for a long time while the story itself is "on pause", continuing as nothing happened as the aria ends, and none of the others on stage heard any of that.
Sure, you can have flashbacks and narration in a movie (or some cheesy voiceover telling what someone is thinking in the moment), but if not done right it can be very disruptive. Even if done right it can be worse than an unexpected musical number.
In musicals that is a fundamental building block, so they are supposed to be there.
It took me to get into opera to understand (and even like) musicals. The biggest problem in my opinion, is that so few musicals are made compared to other movies that fans will watch even the ones you kind of know will be bad beforehand. This is why if you compare the 20 best (non musical) movies of a year to the 20 best musicals, all the non musical ones are probably good, but the musicals may have a few and the rest is just OK (if you enjoy musicals that is).
As with opera, where for every good one (Sure, taste and opinion. I know!) dozens of awful ones was written that is never played anymore.
I only have two tips to get into musicals;
1 - Be picky and just watch the good stuff.
2 - Look up Team StarKid! They make some awesome (and funny) musicals.
NothinG said about Felicia Day??? You did my girl wrong. Also since she was instrumental in getting this project done. She drove the negotiations with Google to get it played on RUclips.
I don't think people realize just how influential Felicia Day is on modern geeky RUclips. Channels like All For 1 and Viva La Dirt League owe a lot to The Guild and she was instrumental in getting Critical Roll up and going.
Hate musicals? Might I recommend Repo! The Genetic Opera.
This was a fun little break from Star Trek, I love all the one offs! And you two diving into the Whedonverse!! 👍
I hope for two things.. that you continue Farscape as it is my all time favorite. And that you continue Buffy! See you two in the next video!
I don't believe you people about Star Trek. I have been lied to for the last time!!
