I like good analytical reactions but suspension of disbelief and moment to moment roasting of a flick just don't go well together. I enjoy your reactions for the most part but you have to reign back the arrogance a tad.

This movie had design cues from a sci-fi artist called Moebius ( aka Jean Giraud ) in the 70s and 80s. Most notable from the original French comic Metal Harlot aka Heay Metal here in the states. Sometimes you just need to watch the eye candy and relax. Stop trying to read deep into everything.

It could happen if they’re fully or mostly automated, and that’s how it would likely come about anyway. In fact, the flying aspect would probably be much easier to manage than cars on the road, such as Tesla. Roadways and their infrastructure and inconsistencies will be a problem for a long time.

From 1997 - "The Fifth Element", has never been a one-view proposition. This film is perfect for repeated viewing as finer details become evident that you missed previously. I will continue to say it: "the 20th Century is a tough act to follow". The old century just passed was the beneficiary of great writers and actors who made best use of established ideas and knew how to present to an audience. The Fifth Element is not perfect, but any film that can make Tiny Lister lovable becomes a keeper in my book. Thank you, Target Audience!

This went over your heads. Give it awhile and rewatch it. I can only say this is a visually beautiful film on the big screen, where I originally watched it in 1997. I was 14 at the time, and I immediately was reminded of the cab driver scene from Heavy Metal, though story wise the two movies flow differently, they are both abstract symbolism antagonists in science fiction settings. Like the corporeal form of hate and evil, or greed. Even star wars deals with that a bit considering the lore of the force. You have to loosen up and have fun with this movie, Josh you looked tense the whole time! But if you don't have a film fascination for sex and violence, the more mainstream stuff like this will be lost on you guys. This film was a summer blockbuster when I saw it. My favorite parts were the Chris Tucker scenes, but I think his character speaks loudly on the film's satire, and even the philosophy of the future. There is philosophy here, 300 years in the future, you have to read between the lines with the characters and find it. As I said this is visually beautiful to watch, on rewatches I found there was a world here too. The writer of the fifth element is a world builder, where even more recent films like the creator lack this depthness, in hindsight I feel. Due to my want for brevity, I won't get into these points with you, just hope you have more fun on the rewatch, cause I know the film will eat away at you until you do.

Luc Besson is known for making action films in France, and once achieved a big enough success was able to branch out and create whatever films he wanted to make. Two big films in the US he directed before this film, were La Femme Nikita and Léon:The Professional. Both of those films did very well in the US and opened the way for him to make the Fifth Element. This film is pretty much the type of film he had always wanted to make, and he had tons of friends help him make this movie. He became friends with Gary Oldman on the set of Léon: The Professional and asked him to do this film, which he agreed. Costume design was done by another friend of Besson's, fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

The Fifth Element has one of my favorite sci-fi aesthetics-so zany and imaginative.
Like in every scene, you want to pause and just pick out and analyze all the random worldbuilding thrown your way. It is very unusual for a one-and-done science fiction movie, too. I think most that come out today just have a very bland future where things are just slightly more advanced than the present, so to not distract too much from the concept they are trying to explore, but not this. Here every scene is packed with stuff that does not matter to the plot but is cool, so we added it for fun.
Also did you notice that Zorg and Corbyn never meet? They always just barely miss each other.

About your question at time 40:50 : Fire-detection-systems (built/modernised in the last 20 years) in big public places like hotels, cinemas or train stations in Germany are normally programmed to give the stuff time to check the location of a detection before beginning an evac-alarm. In the UK this is why an "Inspector Sands" is been asked to points in many stations every year, before u'd kindly asked to leave the building. (Mr. or Inspector Sands as in sand bucket) ^^
    Edit:
since the system is perfectly on time with the bombs counter the hazard-system did what it should've done to reduce the risk of an unnecessary panic (evac-time was around 3,5min, so a 5 min counter seems okay'ish. ^^

Twenty years later, he did it again with a film set in a more distant future, 2017's "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets". You might consider doing a reaction to that one as well.

The costuming was famously done by Jean Paul Gaultier, who is a high fashion designer and often avant garde artist! Hence why everything has absurd and in daring.

This is a movie that I didn't fully appreciate until the 3rd or 4th time watching; it definitely gets better with repeat viewings. It's odd, but it's a Luc Besson film, and he's French, so there's that...

The Fifth Element was poorly promoted, so I saw it not knowing what to expect. However, within minutes of the action moving into the future, I could see the hand of Jean "Mœbius" Giraud all over the production design. I knew right then I was going to be watching a French comic book. I loved it, although I can see how American audiences wouldn't get it at all.

yeah, the little picture on the gun sight is used to determine the range of far off targets, like if the guy you are aiming at is the same size as the mark on the scope then the target is 100m away, something like that. ofcourse the prop budget in this movie was a bit thin and most of the props were intended to be comedic.

This movie grew on me. First time I saw it back in 1997 I didn't like it. It was just so weird, especially Ruby Rod. But after seeing it a couple more times I came to appreciate it. Very different than anything else.

@@targetaudience I have watched your Top 10 movies and there are some fun movies in your selection. What makes a movie really good or great is the script, the directing, and the acting. If one of those three are not there the movie can fail. The Andromedia Strain is a well done edge of your seat film that has things in it you have not seen in a movie before.

The director, Luc Beson, came up with the alien language, taught it to Mila and they spoke in it and wrote to each other in it during the filming. He knew each individual Mangalore, as long as they were in the prosthetics - out of make up he didn't who was who. He also showed Chris Tucker outlandish costume sketrches for Ruby Rod - so he'd be more receptive to what he was actually going to wear. The priest is not alone; he has his acolyte (priest in training) - "Always two there are, no more, no less."
Believe it or not you actually cleared up the beings in the suits and how they relate to Leloo for me. The beings have hundreds of DNA strands. If humans had the tech she could have been reconstructed as a Wookie or a Klingon or a Mangalore. So the human 3d printer makes her human (the only DNA in it's pprogram). The yellow steak at the roots? The printer ran out of red.
The director is French - who knows what's going on in his mind. He was inspired by the French comic series Valerian - which has a Millenium Falcon looking ship in it long before Star Wars. - the Imperial Star Destroyer is probably in there too.

Also the only reason gary oldman did this film is because he was just in before this film the professional and the director said he would be in professional but would have to do 5th element and sadly gary hated doing 5th element and he 's as usual amazing in it! also chris tucker's parts outfits were designed for prince, but prince turned down the part. i love how tucker did the part.

So much to love about this film, one of my all time favorites, especially because of the interesting mix of styles in it. The editing is what I think really makes this film special. In the hands of a meh editor it would have been a boring weird movie. btw congrats, you are the first people I have seen to understand the robbers hat was made to look like the hallway to confuse the person answering the door. Dunno if it's an effective tactic, but you are the only ones to get it. I know someone who worked on the CGI for the city.. and 'tuning' effects in Dark City, which was reportedly painful considering processing power and tools at the time, and why Dark City was in post for so long

One of the things that is really genius is that they show you all this weird shit and don't stop to explain any of it. That takes balls. And discipline. The first time you break into some kind of exposition about the garbage pile in the airport or the parasites, or whatever, you break the atmosphere.

The marketing for this movie absolutely FAILED to convey how fun it is. They made it out to be some sort of Star Wars type epic and it bombed badly in the theaters. Then got a cult following on VHS.

Back in the day I knew a lot of people who worked on this film and no, it wasn't a nightmare at all, it the coolest gig of the decade and people in the industry here in the UK were fighting to get on it. I think when everyone herd John Paul Gaultier was designing it - and there were super models in it as well as Bruce Willis, the buzz around it was enough for you to work on it for free. I knew the people who made the orange rubber costumes and we all went out in London in the spares after it wrapped. This was like the party you never got to go to that everyone who did talked about for the rest of their lives. It was great going to the premier but I'm afraid I don't remember much about that night.

For me the strength of the movie is in the artistic direction. Besson asked for Moebius and Mézière to do the art direction. Moebius is famous for his ground breaking sci-fi comics and singular art style. He worked a lot in the original Heavy Metal magasine. He also worked on the human designs in Alien and did art direction for Tron and Willow. Mézière is the artist of Valerian and Lauréline.
