My favorite independent clip is Zac and Brennan, "Defendant stupidly interrupts his lawyer during closing remarks." It is the perfect display of the strengths of the two actors.
We get that same energy in the fonts bit. Brennan being the straightman, setting up an elaborate situation, with Zac coming in at the opportune moment with the punchline.
so the thing that Brennan is talking about @32:50 (or so) is real! He made up a fake scene. The real scene was in Fantasy High (s1) where Adaine delivers some harsh but fair advice to the incel fairy Biz Glitterdew. It got on Tiktok and immediately started to make it rounds amongst people who didn't realize that it was a dnd show. Brennan got absolutely blasted and Siobhan got it even worse. Dropout went ahead and pulled the clip from the offical d20 tiktok but the video will sometimes still makes it round and you'll get new outrage from people who don't get the context.
It actually was the first clip I saw of D20 and i didn't really know Brennan at the time so I was also convinced that it was real and I thought it was a podcast conversation and didn't really think much of it. When I did get to know Brennan and the rest if the cast and saw the clip on Fantasy High, I was actually so surprised because I completely had blocked out that memory because it felt so disconneted from the Brennan I got to know later
play it by ear shorts were how i got introduced to dropout! absolutely adore it and rewatch regularly, especially recommend whimsy on wheels, it's uploaded on youtube for free
@@omarbhester off book is the original podcast by Zach and Jess. They were brought on as guests for Game changers as a one off show but it was so popular they got their own show on Dropout which is basically their Off-Book show but with more people and a bigger band and host.
As a graphic designer nerd, I have to say I really liked Zac’s subtle interpretation of Comic Sans as the hero every man. It would felt too silly he went all court jester-y. You save that level of goof for the classic Joker font, my friend.
Re: different “reading” of a prompt-there was one which was something like “a phonograph recording that’s so old it’s practically indecipherable”. Brennan got it and used so many “old timey” expressions, that it was…well, indecipherable. It was brilliant. Everyone said “dude, you were supposed to make it sound worn out” and he made it clear that HIS was the proper reading, bc the “recording was so old” and not the “phonograph medium itself” was supposed to be the old thing, or something like that. IMO, it’s the best example of someone reading something different and just running away with it.
"A recording of a political speech so old it's intelligible". Brennan argued that "so old" was modifying "political speech" and not "recording". I think it could be both, but I honestly don't see how to eliminate either interpretation without making it incredibly clunky.
i feel like zac coming in with a silly goofball energy for comic sans would have been the wrong choice. brennan has begun the scene incredibly seriously, and established zac as "not having any serifs with you". that established zac as another person of significant importance within this kingdom, and worthy of diplomacy against an invading force. if zac were to come in and bring goofball energy to this character, it would betray what brennan had established. zac's "man of the people" interpretation of comic sans both works as a characterisation of the font, and also fits with brennan's worldbuilding. the ending with zac transforming into Wingdings and escaping from Times New Roman is also incredibly good because it makes the world feel so much wider than this scene. it's an incredibly silly strategy, and yet it catches TNR completely offguard and succeeds. it implies so much more about the world, and about these characters, their motivations, what they've encountered before and what's new to them. a performance where CS is silly from the getgo and throughout couldnt have a moment like that.
I had to listen to Brennan's "lore" bit twice but I think that, save for a few details that he'd probably have to fill in later, it actually was pretty solid from start to finish. At the very least, he didn't lose track of the thread he was following.
Josh choosing to be a modern hollywood agent was such a good choice because it's such a contrast from Brennan's choice to emphasize the telephone as a relatively new technology in his world with his greeting.
One of the first lessons as an improvisational musician that I learned in college was about the difference between something being planned versus unplanned, and something being meant to sound planned or unplanned. Those are two very different ideas. A lot of the best improvisation is the sort of stuff that is unplanned but it's meant to sound like it is planned out in advance. There's a reason why there have always been so many comments of people asking if the contestants know the prompts ahead of time, to the point where they disclaim it at the beginning of the show that they don't. They probably had a little bit more time than what is shown in the edit sometimes, but it's a matter of seconds, not any real advanced notice
My guess is the prompts also play to the players strengths, like knowing someone has an excellent seagull impression or has a character they've been batting around.
18:07 Heck yeah! I think it would be super interesting and illustrate just how different people think, as well as how completely different choices can be made and still be very funny and work.

28:43 I still remember 6th Grade Camp because the counselors put on a show for us with this idea, letting us students/campers interview "Old Man [Camp Name]" while they acted as interpreters. At one point they said he was "older than bikes" so one of the other kids asked "did you really not have a bike?" and Old Man CN started mumble-hemmin' and mutter-hawwin' while waving his arms about wildly, with a few precise diagonal chops up and to the side, like he was miming having to walk up a hill both ways. The counselor nodded along, paying rapt attention with a true air of seriousness before turning to us and saying "Old Man CN says... no." A few questions later had Old Man CN answer with "Mmm... Mnnn... cough." Which was translated as a long-winded diatribe about how walking through the woods built character, and how Old Man CN never bought a car when he was a young man because he'd been able to reach any destination he wanted on foot quicker than any car! Great bit of translation switchery as well as a good brick joke. It's stuck with me for 17 years after all!

You should watch the Game Changer episode that they did the first musical improv on. (Season 4 episode 5 The Official Cast Recording) It's so good that it's hard to believe it was improv. It was eventually spun off into their musical improv show Play It By Ear. Or the Make Some Noise episode with Wayne Brady. It's improv Karaoke based on the artist and song name.

Zac’s scientist improv was three layers deep: Zach - Improvising a scientist - Who has to improvise a demo - while Zach has to improvise what’s in the imaginary Bark Box 🤯
Your comment about improv being useful outside of performance, and particularly in TTRPGs, did remind me of my favourite moment when running anything - When I found myself needing to come up with and describe a mating dance of an extinct species on the fly, before having them glide off into a dark corner of the steam tunnels they were in to do their business where they were safely faded to black. (Players can't be trusted with the ability to induce simple emotions in creatures, even in limited situations. Because eventually they will ask "Is horny an emotion?") Zac Oyama is the Ultimate Straight man. You can throw any bullshit at him, no matter how insane and he'll give the most sublime reaction to it. But then flipping that, when you ask him to do crazy he somehow makes crazy look sane!
If you can check them out, I’d love to see your thoughts on Shoot From The Hip, they’re a British improv comedy group ( the excited chinchilla is my personal favourite)
If you've been subscribed to DropOut for a while you've probably seen Zach Reino and Jess McKenna! They're improvised musical podcast Off Book has some extremely fun episodes
You should really look into "Shoot from the hip". They are a really good improv group and they are getting the love they deserve, I think you would really like them😁
As an improviser myself, this video was super insightful! I loved your breakdowns and it was very validating to hear you talk about how it’s okay to make a choice and react to a prompt differently than someone else might
One of the things that others have pointed out that I wholly agree with is that Brennan is very, very good at being verbose and full of expedition and knowledge, which is invaluable for setting up these characters incredibly quickly. Zac on the other hand can be very good in a scene. He's amazing at matching the energy, but he is also an absolute powerhouse when it comes to doing more with much much less. Which is partially why the scene with them as the fonts works so well. It's set up almost like a action comedy movie where, you know, the bad guy does get to do his big serious monologue and you start to feel those feelings that things are going to be bad. But then what ends up happening is the hero makes a weird quip to completely break the tension and then I don't know a fight scene or something lol.
Loving these videos! I've always wanted to do more improv and I love seeing your reactions and hearing what you have to say about them. And you have such a sweet outlook on things!
It would definitely be neat to see your take on the prompts. I would say many of the prompts are made with that exact person in mind so might not be in your wheelhouse. But I also dont know what your wheelhouse is.
OMG HOW DID IT TAKE ME 15 MINS TO NOTICE THE OFMD SHIRT!!! 💖💖💖 I adore that show 💜🏳️🌈🏴☠️ I'd love to see your takes on prompts in a potential future video 😁
I’d love to see you react to more make some noise (and game changer as well)!! If you want to show how you’d react to props I think that would be very cool!
June 24th a new season of Make Some Noise is coming out. You should do some videos on that after it comes out. This was a great analysis of the how's and why's of how they improv.
I'm amazed. This is the second video I saw of yours randomly over the past few days and I'm amazed you're brand new! I was heartbroken to open your channel and see I only have 4 more videos. Please keep making content. I love inside baseball videos like this. And please, I'd love to see your interpretations of prompts!
At 27:00 ish I also want to throw in that they do this thing I love where, as you say, you have two characters who completely clash in style and then one of them briefly joins the other one unexpectedly while still acting as if it wouldn’t be out of character in universe re: “Am I not already on the list?”
Could be fun to do a long-form improv reaction sometime! There's a channel called Shoot from the Hip and they have some great short and long-form videos if you haven't seen them yet. I also think your reaction/breakdown of the House of Lies Improv show from a few years ago with Ben Schwartz, Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, etc. would be fun. Ben does a great job setting everyone up because some of them have never done improv before. It's very goofy!
Probably an “out there” recommendation, since Markiplier doesn’t really do improv EVER, but… He has a video titled “CHANGE” wherein he and his group of friends play the improv game where they have to change their line on the fly if someone says ‘change’. I’m sure you already know that game tho, haha. But I’d love to hear your insight on the video, especially with regard that Markiplier and his friends aren’t used to improv. It’s a pretty old video, but I still think there’s some good insight to be had. :)
Yes!! There's also the ones with the lines from comments that's improv-based! I've rewatched those videos so many times I'm probably 80% of the views lol
Great video! love the commentary. I think another game-changer video that could work really well in this format is "A Game Most Changed" which is episode 5 of season 5 and involves the contestants improvising a Shakespearian-style play while incorporating different words based off of prompts e.g. cereal brands or company names. It might be a bit harder to react to but it is very funny and worth a watch regardless.
if you want longer form-ish improv, i highly recommend another dropouttv show, very important people which features the host, vic and a different guest each episode. the guests are played by various dropout-affiliated comedians/entertainers and theyre given a complete makeover at the whim of the makeup artists and costumers, and have to come up with a character to play for the interview. the interviews are completely improvised (occasionally interspersed with videos recorded after the fact), and the world building for each individual character is incredible
I do miss high school improv a lot and DropOut gives me the same feelings as Whose Line is it Anyways and the same nostalgia from doing improv with friends.
I would love to see an analysis of the first Gamechanger Make Some Noise episode they did and the last Make Some Noise episode they've done to see how they've progressed.

Would love to see your take on Dropout prompts, but it would have to be one you haven't seen yet in order to be fair (i.e. truly improvised, not pre-planned).
I legit love how Zac set Brennan up for that New Centurion pun. He's like "okay, the audience wants you to handle the font names, but make sure you get this one in there"
I love every dropout show in existence. Truly excellent. I only did a couple of improv moments in University at hobby theater but genuinely, my response to "a list of 17 names look for the 17th one" would have been "Is that the last name on the list or are they lined in a different way?" xD
My favorite independent clip is Zac and Brennan, "Defendant stupidly interrupts his lawyer during closing remarks." It is the perfect display of the strengths of the two actors.

That bit was my first exposure to the Dropout crew and I never looked back.

Zac Oyama is the Ultimate Straight man. You can throw any bullshit at him, no matter how insane and he'll give the most sublime reaction to it. But then flipping that, when you ask him to do crazy he somehow makes crazy look sane!
I would absolutely love to see you do your take on the prompts. Definitely a great idea for a future video!
If you can check them out, I’d love to see your thoughts on Shoot From The Hip, they’re a British improv comedy group ( the excited chinchilla is my personal favourite)
IVE BEEN OBSESSED WITH THEM!!
Omg i love dropout... I think their newest show, "Very Important People" with Vic is one of my favorite improv games of theirs!
the Augburt episode was so incredible
If you've been subscribed to DropOut for a while you've probably seen Zach Reino and Jess McKenna! They're improvised musical podcast Off Book has some extremely fun episodes
I'm a hoooorrrrsssegiiiirrrrrl
Love your breakdowns and insight! Keep the good stuff coming!
"You've been very bad and the robots are coming~" CLASSIC MSN I would love to see you do your version of the prompt and then show theirs!
Yes yes yes. I absolutely want the your interpretation version. I love dropout so much and that sounds phenomenal.
I'm late but I'd love to see you trying to also do the prompts
YES YES YOUR INTERPRETATIONS YESSSS! I've wanted people to react to this solely because I want to see if they improve based on the prompts too!
Love that when anyone speaks gibberish, YT CC labels it [music] 😂
OMG HOW DID IT TAKE ME 15 MINS TO NOTICE THE OFMD SHIRT!!! 💖💖💖 I adore that show 💜🏳️🌈🏴☠️
I'd love to see your takes on prompts in a potential future video 😁
I’d love to see you react to more make some noise (and game changer as well)!! If you want to show how you’d react to props I think that would be very cool!
June 24th a new season of Make Some Noise is coming out. You should do some videos on that after it comes out. This was a great analysis of the how's and why's of how they improv.
Please react to more dropout! Very Important People is full of so many good choices and hilarious moments
YES OMG
Yes!! There's also the ones with the lines from comments that's improv-based! I've rewatched those videos so many times I'm probably 80% of the views lol
no idea what a bark box is so i would be lost if i got that prompt
32:26 i’m pretty sure this about the end of fantasy high freshman year (season 1 of dimension 20)
I would be so down to see your interpretation of the prompts
I think the Karaoke Night episodes are great. Especially the one with Wayne Brady
I like your idea of giving your ideas on the prompt,i’d personally enjoy hearing your thoughts about how you’d execute
YES I was hoping you would show your interpretation of the prompt before seeing theirs, that would be so fun to watch!
I do miss high school improv a lot and DropOut gives me the same feelings as Whose Line is it Anyways and the same nostalgia from doing improv with friends.
High School Improv? More like "College Humor"
Definitely would love to see more dropout reactions
I would love to see an analysis of the first Gamechanger Make Some Noise episode they did and the last Make Some Noise episode they've done to see how they've progressed.
Can i just say you have such integrity as a creator already and im super happy to see the 1k described turn to the 3.9k i see. Also, genius call to action for subscribing, i was about to ride into the comments section celebrating being here when you started, and while it may be bittersweet, i can still at least wish you well on your journey up the youtube ladder, if you are so inclined to attempt to climb. If not, i hope this community grows and is chill~ keep up the great work
I'd love to see your take on more Dropout stuff. Personally, I want to see the Make Some Noise pilot. Super curious to get your take on those bits.
Like my coffee is some great improv! I’m obsessed
At 5:25 is why, Brennan Lee Mulligan, is an amazing DM in D&D, actor and writer
I need Brendan to work with Damien from Smosh. They give me the same energy
Both are DMs
your videos are so chill and fun, i really enjoyed this. seeing your takes on the prompts would be great!
I would love for you to do the Make Some Noise prompts, maybe bring some friends in so you can do the group prompts as well.
"You've been very bad and the robots are coming"
Classic
Have you seen the Game Changer episode with the Improvised Shakespeare Company? That was hilarious!
I would totally be interested in you doing prompts!
Would love to see your take on Dropout prompts, but it would have to be one you haven't seen yet in order to be fair (i.e. truly improvised, not pre-planned).
Since make some noise is gonna have a new season too, maybe you can do the video you suggested with a newer episode.
I bet Past Josh would be excited to knowst that there's now a sequost: Beetlejost Beetlejost.
“…Am I not already on the list?”
This part freaking SENDS ME💀
I legit love how Zac set Brennan up for that New Centurion pun. He's like "okay, the audience wants you to handle the font names, but make sure you get this one in there"
As a person who is not in any way a trained improviser, I really like when you point out the things folks do great that we might miss.
Brennan taking control in a crisis situation as a pistachio shell unlocked a new level of attractiveness for me lol
you doing your own interpretation of the prompt sounds awesome, please do that!
Zac never takes it where you think and that's part of his charm and why he is so brilliant.
If you do more Make Some Noise (which I hope you do!) one of my favourite players is Ross Bryant!
i found u through smosh, now ur doing dropout AND wearing an ofmd shirt??? hello???? new favorite youtuber?????
I love every dropout show in existence. Truly excellent.
I only did a couple of improv moments in University at hobby theater but genuinely, my response to "a list of 17 names look for the 17th one" would have been "Is that the last name on the list or are they lined in a different way?" xD
Woooo i officially can say I've followed a youtuber since they had 1200 followers
“Hell no, that ain’t right….
Hell yes, that is right….”
you should react to play it by hear, its also on dropout, its musical improv!
"Youve been bad the robots are coming" was absolutely my favorite part lol
pls watch play it by ear aswell. its amazing
