Will the two deco still be paired or will it lose connection and I'll have to connect them again when it's upstairs/downstairs.

You knocked in in to a tin hat, plain and simple, and easy to follow. I feel more confident in giving this ago myself. So thank you and keep up the good work.
Gread tutorial. I have set up several of these systems so just letting those know, if you have devices such as computers/printers connected to the LAN ports on your current Modem/Router and want to keep your existing DHCP server from your current router assigning the same IP range so all devices 'talk' on the network - make sure you swap over to Access Point mode after setting up. Keeping it in Router mode means the Deco will assign new IP addresses on the new WiFi system to that of the current modem/router you already have and they won't 'talk' to each other.

Thanks so much for input on these devices. I was starting the process of ordering Deco M5s for my situation. I contacted TP Link to have them give me input and information to confirm my application and selection. This is my situation. I have a installation needing 3 devices. The base and a 2nd Deco some 30 ft apart in the main house (only 1 floor) and a 3rd Deco in my external shop which ii is about 100ft from the house. I currently use a wifi extender to provide wifi in the shop. After much discussion with TP Link support they would not recommend their product more than 50 ft from the main house. I told them I was testing this configuration with another supplier's equipment and it was connecting. Thus I don't see how to proceed with TP Link. I really wanted to use the Deco M5 devices. My question is do you see my configuration as not applicable for setting up 3 Deco M5s because of the 100ft distance of the third Deco ? Hi there, just curious, is the setup in your video in router mode or access point mode? I have an existing router/modem (2 in 1) and i am planning to get the deco as well to solve my bad wifi. I am worried if the access point mode wouldn't be as good as the router mode. Great video btw!

Thanks for the video. Just wondering if you need to change any settings on current router to stop the WiFi from that? Will it interfere with the deco system?
Great video, two questions I set up 2 Deco M5 units today. I was surprised that while the Deco app does have a password, that it did not require a password for my router. Could not someone whom has a Deco app on their phone tap into my Deco system with their phone? Next question regards Alexa, they say works with Alexa. Does Alexa receive its wi-fi signal from the Deco, do you have to tell Alexa to find the Deco in order for her to receive the wi-fi signal from the Deco? Thanks
You created an account when setting up the deco. It attaches your devices to that account. So someone won't be able to walk in and access your devices unless you gave them your login. For Alexa, you will need to add the skill and link the 2 together.
First, thanks for the great review. Second, I already have a 3 piece Deco set up and want to get a 4 additional extender for our basment. What do I buy? Lol, thanks in advance.
Great video. Main deco configured without issue. The two satellites are flashing blue indicating need for setup. I thought they would simply connect to the main deco. Appreciate any ideas.
Hi great review but I do have a question that nobody seems to ask! I have a 9 deco system comprising of M4 & M5s. My Main Deco ( M5) Ethernet connected to router but it seems that most of the other decos are connecting to the Main even though there are several much closer and with a better signal? I know on the App somewhere there was a setting to toggle Auto on or off and when turned off you could tell a particular deco to connect to one of your choice ie closer or better signal. But can’t seem to find it again? Please help! Thanks once again for a informative video.
If I already have a TP-Link router, do I have to substitute the router's WIFI by this mesh WIFI or is there any configuration all the mesh devices can connect wirelessly to my primary router? The think is that my router does not have enough strength to send good wifi to my 2nd floor, are this devices have more power than the router?
Hello again, one more question please. I plan to replace my existing deco mesh m5 home WiFi network with a newer X20 WiFi 6 deco mesh system in order to upgrade internet speed and function. What should I do? Just add new my new devices into my existing network? An then remove my old ones? Or something else? Thank you.
Two problems I may have with this Deco M5 is range (not to be mistaken with coverage) my garden shelter (Den) is 25m from my nearest building. That would require a 490m2^ coverage device but it is outside so what is the range outside? Second point, would my Host router Virgin HUB 3 WiFi still be used in the network? Many thanks for video very comprehensive.
25m could be doable if you have minimal surface interference. I would place them as close as you can to each-other. You can still use your Host router.
Question: I have roughly 40 devices (Computer, phone, TVs, smart lights and assistants) connected to my current modem/router, give or take. Would this cause any problems like dropped internet because too many things are connected? I saw on the Amazon page they can have about 100 devices attached. Very informative video, if this can still work with all the smart devices and everything else I have, then I am getting this.
You bet! They do make a Wifi 6 version in the Deco system that is deigned for IoT(Internet of Things) and congestion, may be worth investing a bit more. I would try this system out, if it fails for that reason, send it back and snag the upgraded version.
I only have the main mesh. I'm planning to use long lan cable maybe about 20 meters so that I can put the main mesh between the main router and my bed room. Is my set up good or it is not ok to use long cables for the extender... Thank you...
Hey, great review! I have question about Qos. Can I disable some websites on Deco? For example, I don't want to allow using of RUclips, can I disable it? Or can I limit the speed for some specific websites?
Correct me if I am wrong here. I place 1 deco next to my wireless router that has trouble reaching into the farthest room in the house. I place the 2nd deco in the problem room. How is that going to solve the issue? Whatever is blocking my routers wifi will now block the deco's wifi? Or do the decos talk to each other using the electric wiring in the house.
Deco 1 is WIRED to your router. Deco 2 and/or Deco 3 talked to the others via wireless to create a mesh like wifi structure. You will need to place the Decos as far as you can but still maintain a good signal strength.
Great video...mine is on it's way. Just a quick question...my router has no spare ethernet port available at present, do I unplug one to connect the Deco and then plug the lead that was plugged into the router into the other ethernet port on the Deco?? Thanks in advance
Great review! New sub. Introduced to this system a bit late via Primus internet. Thank you for describing the parental features...everything you shared convinced me to buy more pods. Would you still recommend the same model as of April 2023? Or is there a newer model you'd recommend? We also have a TPlink Archer 10 router. To be clear, is the Deco M5 system meant to fully replace this router...if we want to take advantage of parental controls in the app? Thank you:)

For that speedtest, was the other node only connected wirelessly to the main node? If not, how was the speed difference between the main node and other node (wireless backhaul)?
Only the main node was wired, the other 2 are wirelessly connected to the main node. I don't have exact numbers however the download has been great regardless of which node I am connected to.
Does it make sense that I now have 3 networks? My modem gives me a 2.4G and 5G network, and now I have my Deco network. Should I pick and choose what devices connect to which? Or do I need to name my Deco SSID to copy my modems network?
If i want to set this as an extender for my upper rooms, i need to configure it as AP mode? And to setup i still need to use LAN cable connected to exiating router? Tq

Does one of the Deco M5 devices need to remain connected to either the Modem or Router? I have a TP Link AC1750 Router connected to my modem in my basement. I get very poor signal upstairs. Can I not just get 1 Deco M5 device, place it upstairs and connect via wifi to extend my routers signal? Do I have to have two instead? One downstairs wired to the router, and the other upstairs to boost the signal?
Great review! I do have problems with my Deco setup. The other Deco connects to the main Deco however when im near the secondary Deco it doesn't provide internet connection. Does it mean my secondary Deco is broken?
Yes you can! But the catch is it requires one of your other units to broadcast it. So, 2 would have to be plugged in to the router, 1 would broadcast one SSID, the other other to broadcast the other SSID. The 3rd pod could be link to either to extend it.
Very informative video! I have a not so big apartment but large enough that the furthest room from the router has very weak signal and sometimes looses the signal completely, that is why im considering this product. Since the main device will be cabled, unless i get a pretty long ethernet cable, for this to work i should have a minimum of 2 devices? Hope you can reply. Thanks and stay safe.

Hey thanks for the vid - one question pls .. if we connect the main or first one to the modem/router can we extend the remaining 2 of them as wired extensions instead of WiFi ? (Was looking to get a total of 4 of them for the entire house) Thanks in advance

Hey I got this system. But my internet is DSL - modem router so it has existing name & password. Not sure how to continue to maintain that existing service
I just got mine today, I just want to confirm something with it. Maybe you can help? Is it a must to have 1 connected wired and the rest wireless? I actually have a different modem router combo and it only has 1 Lan port working and I use it for work. Can I just use the Mesh as a wifi extender of some sort instead?
Great explanation. I'm looking to purchasing this as my wifi is awful. By adding the Decos, will I see another wifi network in addition to my existing one? Or would I have to try to put my modem to bridge mode to not see the existing wifi? The wifi signal on the modem is awful. Thanks.
What I would do is disable the wifi network from your modem/router. Set this up and you will have 1 SSID(Wifi Name) for roaming and 2.4/5ghz network. The connected device will auto swap between 2.4 or 5ghz and to the closest node for best connection.
What speeds to you get from you provider? I am wondering how much speed is lost when you use the mesh system? ie if you pay for 150 Mbps and get 100 Mbps with the mesh system. How much speed is lost when using the system?
@@HelpCloud thanks for the quick reply! So what is your speeds, exactly (1000 mbps? 800 mbps?) coming in from your ISP and what speeds do you get with the routers? I am wondering what percentage of your speed is lost when you use your system (10% loss, 40% loss?)? Thanks for your help :) I have 500 mbps download and about 10 upload and want to know, with my numbers, about how well these systems will translate my speeds across my home :)
It depends on the time, on average I see about 900 up/down at any given moment. Through the deco app speed test I am seeing 600 down and 900 up on my Samsung Phone. Your speed may vary with certain wall types, and general interference from other wireless networks from neighbors etc. With a 500 down and 10 up, I would bet you would get full speeds or close to it.

You can buy the deco individually. How large is the basement? You may only need a couple more.
@@HelpCloud Thanks. only a few hundred sq ft. Just got one and ready to set up. thanks!
Great video. Main deco configured without issue. The two satellites are flashing blue indicating need for setup. I thought they would simply connect to the main deco. Appreciate any ideas.
You need to go into the app and "Add the decos" this is demonstrated in the video. Let me know how it goes.
The Deco system can be its own router. You can disable your main routers wifi and use the deco system.
Thanks you convinced me to buy and subscribe.
You will like it alot. I haven't had any issues with it. Thanks for the sub!
You plug it into the modem, then select i don't have a modem? I consider myself a fairly advanced user but have no idea what you mean by that.
Correct, once you click " I don't have a modem", you will see the next steps.
Thank you.
You can setup the new system with the same info and all the devices should just connect.
Can you setup VLAN on all the deco's? or just the M5? I can't see the option under "advanced" for the model Deco i'm looking at which isn't the M5
I am not sure, what Deco system are you looking into?
Question: I have roughly 40 devices (Computer, phone, TVs, smart lights and assistants) connected to my current modem/router, give or take. Would this cause any problems like dropped internet because too many things are connected? I saw on the Amazon page they can have about 100 devices attached. Very informative video, if this can still work with all the smart devices and everything else I have, then I am getting this.
I have roughly the same amount of devices and it has worked very well.
@@HelpCloud Good to know, thank you very much.
That will work just fine!
Hey, great review! I have question about Qos. Can I disable some websites on Deco? For example, I don't want to allow using of RUclips, can I disable it? Or can I limit the speed for some specific websites?
This point you in the right direction
www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1598/
Sadly its not working anymore after the firmware update. I blocked tiktok using the add website function but in some kind of bugged, it disappeared!
Yes, you will need a free ethernet port on your router.
Thank you:)
great video. I would like to know if I can conncet the main hub directly to ISP provided modem/ router or does it have to be a stand alone modem? thanks.
Yes, I have mine connected to my router then I shut off my main routers Wi-Fi and running everything through the Deco.
@@HelpCloud I'm still not sure about your answer to Nick's question. Do I shut off my ISP's router/modem by unpluging it's power source ? If so with no power how does the modem part continue to function ?
I had a question, im about to buy the Deco m5 off of Amazon. does it have to run on Ethernet or can it be run wireless through wifi only like a range extender?
may i asked... Did I always need to connect it to the modem by network cable after setup? If yes, then I should buy a cable or can it connect thru wifi after?
The main(first) pod has to remain connected to the router/modem.
My T-Mobile gateway modem has a built in battery that is not removable - What do I do now?
Great video !!! Is the M5 still worth buying in 2024 please?
Also can I mix a Deco Wifi 5 with Deco wifi 6 ?
For that speedtest, was the other node only connected wirelessly to the main node? If not, how was the speed difference between the main node and other node (wireless backhaul)?
Only the main node was wired, the other 2 are wirelessly connected to the main node. I don't have exact numbers however the download has been great regardless of which node I am connected to.
Great video, very informative. 👍🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Does it make sense that I now have 3 networks? My modem gives me a 2.4G and 5G network, and now I have my Deco network.
Should I pick and choose what devices connect to which? Or do I need to name my Deco SSID to copy my modems network?
It does, I too had this and shut off my networks broadcast from my modem.
@@HelpCloud should I shut off modem network completely or put it in bridge mode?
can i install this deco even though i already have an existing secondary router?
Yes you can, I would plug it into the main router.
If i want to set this as an extender for my upper rooms, i need to configure it as AP mode? And to setup i still need to use LAN cable connected to exiating router? Tq
You can leave as router mode, 1 pod connected to the router and the other 2 pods in their respective rooms.
With my deco tp link when I am connecting to the internet if I choose the maiden router instead of the mesh network will it have the effects of the mesh network?
No.
@@HelpCloud so the mesh can be connected for my kids and when i join the router the mesh is connected to instead of the mesh i can use internet without the mesh?
I have a Deco W2400, I have tried everything but can't get it to connect to my Wi-Fi, please help
Do i have to setup an ethernet cable for this? Im thinking of plainly just do it wireless, or is that redundant?
The first pod will need to be wired, the other 2 are wireless.
Very good review. Can I ask a question? Is it possible to connect primary deco to secondary via ethernet cable? and then from second to third deco also via ethernet? Thank you so much for answer.
Secondary decos only connect to the primary deco.
Meaning that you can add multiple ones in _different directions;_ but you can't daisy chain them.
@@wisemage0 Okay one more question each deco got only two ethernet ports, so I can't connect all three by wire, correct? Connect from modem to primary deco and then from primary deco the next two also by wire.
Great video!...how far can I install the main and the slave deco each other. I have a large yard and thinking to install one near the end(indoor of course).
That is something you will need to test as your environment will yield different results from mine due to different walls/interferences.
Hi there, will the first unit that is connected via Ethernet cable would remain hooked up?
I was wondering this issue too, I hope he reply to this
looks like we have to sacrifice one device judging by the comments down below, it is fine though but kinda...eh. So yeah looks like one needs to be hooked up...
Yes the first Deco has to remain hard wired to your router/modem. This ensures a reliable connection when the other Decos are paired.
Hi, i have a modem/router with 4 ethernet ports (pc, xbox, tv are plugged in) one is free. Can i still use a deco (for better wifi) without any change to my cable plugged devices in router/modem?
Yes!
With this deco I have a modem/router combo. Will this still work and if so would the wifi I used to be on that is with the modem/router would that be still working? When I make the account and set up the wifi name and password what happens to the wifi that I used to be on?
Yes you can still use one of these. You can leave the wifi on the router on or disable like I have done.
When you disable the router wifi it still has ethernet --right? Ethernet still goes to the router ports and to the Deco. The Deco wifi takes over and you just don't use the router's wifi. @@HelpCloud
Hi, is it possible to get a static device link to a Deco of choice. At the moment, my streaming box is connected to a Deco in a bedroom and not the one in the living room where i have another Deco, cheers.
Yes, you can set devices to not allow roaming which will keep it tied to a specific pod.
@@HelpCloud Great stuff, thanks.
You are welcome!
Thanks so much your video really helped me.
One of them does need to remain connected via hardwired. For that scenario, you will need at least a 2 pod system.
@@HelpCloud thank you for the response!
You bet!
Great review! I do have problems with my Deco setup. The other Deco connects to the main Deco however when im near the secondary Deco it doesn't provide internet connection. Does it mean my secondary Deco is broken?
Even if I'm near to the secondary Deco, I cant connect to it. I'm always connected to the main deco.
I would reset and re-setup the 2nd deco pod.
Great video. One question, if I use access point mode can I create another SSID and password? Thx
Yes, you will need at least a 2 pod system.
One of my deco has an issue, no matter how many times I factory reset the faulty one whenever I set it up it only has 5ghz connection. I checked if my connection's only 5 ghz but 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz are both on. I turned off the 5 ghz connection then tried to setup the faulty one then I couldn't set it up. Hope you could help.
If you still can send it back I would. Sounds like a defective unit.
Hi I get a steady red light on my deco? does it mean it's defective? Thanks.
Red does indicate an issues. Have you tried to reboot?
Thank you - just set up using your video
Fantastic!!
Hey thanks for the vid - one question pls .. if we connect the main or first one to the modem/router can we extend the remaining 2 of them as wired extensions instead of WiFi ? (Was looking to get a total of 4 of them for the entire house) Thanks in advance
Yes, although it will need to be in access point mode, in AP mode, you will lose the extra features like parental controls, pausing devices etc.
www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1794/
What if you wifi network is called I.e. funhouse5G
I saw you named the deco network to something. That means my devices will be connecting to different network names in my house??
Or can I can the decos the same as my network. Kinda like a router?
Thanks!
When setting this up, you can choose the same name or choose a different name to use for the wifi network.
I loved your video!!! such great information and explanation to this non savvy non tech..ha
Glad you liked it!!
Hi, i have a question, based on your video, even if i have a modem and router, its alright to skip the steps when it ask to turn off the modem and router?
Yup! That is how mine is setup.
HOw to change Channel of deco M5? any update for this setting will change the Channel? thankyou
As of right now it can't be done, however they have forwarded the request to their team.
community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/156515
Hoping.. big help also if it has manual settings for channels to change. thankyou
Hey I got this system. But my internet is DSL - modem router so it has existing name & password. Not sure how to continue to maintain that existing service
You can skip that step and follow how I did it in the video.
Can i place the first deco which is wired to the router as far as 3 meters?
That would work just fine!
Thank you for this very informative video. It really helped a lot.
@Hedy Svenson Time for her to get a new bf hahahaha
Love the sarcasm! Thanks for helping with that comment(removed)
Thanks! Great video!
Glad you liked it!
Can you wire all 3 units?
I appreciate the review. It looks easy, do you have to have a router? My router has a static id address and I don't know how to set this up...
The first does have to be wired.
Thank you, that was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!!
@@HelpCloud Hey I would like to dp this but my system has both a modem & router in - and I am unable to disable the network
Can you reset your deco even its plug in in the wifi and the light is green just asking if its okay because im scared to do it
What type of reset? Is this the main pod?
Does the first deco always have to be connected to the router with the Ethernet cable or can you move the first deco about ? Brilliant review btw!
Yes it does, that is what creates the solid foundation for the mesh system.
What speeds to you get from you provider? I am wondering how much speed is lost when you use the mesh system? ie if you pay for 150 Mbps and get 100 Mbps with the mesh system. How much speed is lost when using the system?
I have a Gigabit connection. Speed loss can be determined by many factors.
