One of the biggest pieces of advice that I live by was actually a question answered by Aurelio Voltaire. Someone asked him what they should do to get their art business started but hasn't done anything, Voltaire just sighed and said, "What do I need to mail you a pencil?" No one is going to do the art for you. The art world isn't easy but you're guaranteed to miss the shots you never take.
Thank you! This short video has opened my eyes more that any other I've watched. I can work harder. I can do more to achieve my dreams. I will hold myself accountable. Again, thank you.
LOVE this ED! Not to sound like I already knew but because I've observed other artists work their ASSES off and I've seen them succeed eventually (good and "bad" art, doesn't matter). I know all I have to do is work hard, f*ck up, learn, improve, f*ck up some more, and keep working, harder and smarter. I went all in 3 years ago and I've failed a lot but also have some big wins. I get discouraged from time to time but it never makes me slow down or stop producing, I adjust, shift and keep going. So much of what you say and what you're doing resonates with my take on the kind of art I make. My work has no deep meaning or inspired by some intellectual crap, I just like color and design. And nothing makes me happier than when people say "I don't why but I love that piece". It doesn't matter why, my work is mostly abstract so there's no narrative or particular intention. It's like chemistry between people. There's a reaction that then makes an attraction. And hopefully they're attracted enough to want it in their life! It sucks that you're so far away! If I ever make it back over there I would love to visit with you. You have an open invitation to visit us in Houston Texas and my services as a tour guide, drinking and arting companion are included for free! ;) Cheers and THANK YOU FOR YOU!!!

The two things that worked for me were 1) LITERALLY reprogramming my subconscious mind and beliefs using subliminals, which programmed me for success and 2) YES, HARD WORK and LONG HOURS. But in my experience, unless the subconscious self-sabotaging beliefs are changed, NOTHING works, no matter how badly you want it consciously. I HAD to get my subconscious mind in agreement-and then, my work really took off. Kudos on your amazing success and gorgeous work-you certainly earned it!

Nothing discouraging about that. Puts the control back in my hands. I don't have to worry if some people don't understand my work, many do. I just go out and find more.
You're actually 100% correct with what you say here. Myself, as an artist realized that I personally don't want it bad enough (anymore). I personally used to, but lost that drive and passion while hitting every single obstacle in my way until I literally had enough. Being homeless multiple times, being in crazy art college debt, spending over 16 years in and out out of design school, getting turned down or screwed over by people and companies over and over and over again. I've personally have had enough. I've realized that I'm much much happier with a boring, even mediocre 9-5 life. I'm venting my story here, so it doesn't have to be your story. I still support other artists/designers and want then to succeed, but for me, I've hit the end of the road about two years ago and ain't looking back. I'm 43 now and choose my mental health over the struggle of an artist.
Thank you Chris - it's a series of experiences I can relate to very well. There are many times I feel like giving up but for now I continue. I asked myself this question at the end of 2018 and took a good look at the art I was producing. It needed improvement. So I took some classes and upped the quality of my work and it really did make a difference.
I'm a junior in high school and art has been something that I've always wanted to pursue, and recently I've been feeling unmotivated because of the pandemic and everything happening in my home country. when you said "are you doing absolutely everything you can to make this happen?" I knew that the answer was no, but now I know that I can change that. So thank you for the video, I really needed someone to snap their fingers in my face and get me out of my procrastination like that!

This is great advice for every area of creativity. I'm not an artist, I'm a writer, but without me pushing myself forward I wouldn't get anywhere. I am working around the clock sometimes. Its brilliant advice. Work smart. xx
I’ve been in a rut not having my car for nearly 4 months. It’s 11:30 pm, but I’m rewatching your advice segments to help with my motivation. Thanks again Ed and Ady for posting these. I have to be up before the annoying rooster down the street and I’m actually looking forward to it. Hopefully I can come away with more images for my portfolio.
Hi Nancy, glad we have helped with the motivation, we are human too and suffer with the same sometimes but we kick our own butts to "Just Do It" and find a way to get cracking 😊👍
Watched this one for the 2nd time after maybe 6 month. I am glad to realize that I’m doing so much more than then in order to make it as an artist. And glad to still answer your question now with “ I can do sooooo much more about it” YEAH
this helps because it let me know i need to relax. im alredy doing everything i can and im putting that work in i just have to keep it going. im still just trying figure shit out lol.
Thank you so much for sharing your work, your life, and your advice with us. It is much appreciated. I have a few questions, since this is Ask the Artist, im hoping you could advise me on. I am planning to become an artist, simply put. My goal is to be fully set up withing two years to open a website, possibly an etsy shop, or pursue other online and real world sales avenues. Here is my problem and question. Right now I only have a few paintings due to lack of space. I realise I will need quite a few pieces befoe I can pursue any of the forementioned sales avenues. Unitl I move into a place with more space, adding to my exsisting art is an impossibility. How many pieces do you think would be a healthy number to start out with? I dont want to start out and appear unprofessional by only having a few pieces. Furthermore, what other things could I be working on in the meantime, so as to be ready when my assigned goal date rolls around? I would like to have all my ducks in a row long before I begin working on my sales. Do you think I should just wait until I can focus only on the art, or would it be a good idea to do the other things now, just to get them out of the way?
shannie medrano good heavens! I can’t possibly try to answer all of that becuase it’s way too complicated a question and one that doesn’t have a specific answer. I was forced into a corner by which pint I had 100 reasonable paintings but that doesn’t mean you need 100. I’m not sure what you should start with; only to say that the wider the choice the more possibilities you have. As for everything else? There’s never a time when it’s all ready - just get things going and develop as you go I guess? Very tough one to answer as it depends on what you define as being ready!!
I think your artwork is awesome...the type that totally transforms a room...something interior decorators would die for....love the video...it keeps me motivated to keep going....do my own art...what I love....luckily I have a day job and can work at my art when in a creative zone....I love to see peoples dreams come true...thanks for sharing...
Everything you say is exactly what I need to hear . I’m an artist and I’m in a daze walking around like a fool I’m stuck I’m scared I’m unable to get past a certain point and my art curators say SK we have a $4,000 we will put in your hand once you finish this piece …. And I have walked around this piece for weeks , months . Now I’m down to the last thing which is a top coat pour to encase it with resin and I have messed up on so many others with this pour , it leaves bubbles and I have to resend it and pour again … so I’m terrified to pour the final coat on my art piece .
As long as you get a decent quality resin and mix it properly then you can release bubbles with a hairdryer, a degassing chamber or a light spray with isopropanol alcohol. Mix a pot, try it on a test canvas and then, whilst you still have a decent pot life remaining, apply to the actual piece. If you worry about it going off too quickly don't put as much hardener in. Hope that helps!
Make what people like and they will desire to be near it. Make something inspiring and people will compete to obtain it. Make something worth preserving and people will protect it.
Ouch, that stung! Now I'm retired I have the time I said I lacked to paint when I worked full time but I always put off going into my studio space to work and I don't keep a schedule of art exhibitions and competitions I can enter. Thank you for the metaphorical kick up the backside.
@@SwarezArt I guess it's why you do it :) It's difficult to get good honest down to earth advice and I get the impression that a lot of people who are in the business of selling or making art are somewhat like car salesmen. I suspect they're lying to me but I can't quite work out how.
Thanks for this, I constantly create, work on the skill set. I am doing everything I can, I know it, it's hard to believe it at times, but I know what's stopping me, and I got my exit plan. ✌🏽✌🏽
I am a beginner to Art. Forget technically.I don’t want it bad enough. The right time.Follow it through. It’s hard . Put work on it. Organize it, Learn . Effort Plan. Smarter way.
Great video, thx. Also loneliness is a big issue here: it is you and you and you. Not like in the entertainment business or team sports and other areas. One has to learn to deal with the many hours alone in the studio, by the computer or visiting exhibits alone etc. One has to accept being with the same old person day and night. Of course there are friends and social life, but this is just a little part of the 24 hours if you want to succeed. And we are not talking about months, but years. And find out how to survive in all this - maybe give yourself happy moments alone, whatch a movie, go to a concert etc. in between working hours ...
I do not work hard enough. I think I have an idea what's happening and this could be happening to others as well. Namely, I am stuck in my "hobby" mentality, while I want to get much better results that just "hobby" results. So I think there is a "switch" that one have to turn. The switch from "hobby" over to "professional" mentality of work. And that's not easy, it is a big step, but it has to be taken. Maybe a nice subject for the Q&A. cheers.
Look, I will tell you. I was a pro portrait artist Julian Freud style when I was young, then I picked up again when the kids had grown up- living in Cornwall did impasto versions of local scenes, emigrated ( we had to) its cultural Siberia theyve done it thats enough. The emphasis is on the past. No outlets a blank. I go on line to the galleries, keep getting favourited, know I am good but not one sale, abandoned it.
I make the art and work hard - but my fear of rejection takes over so I don't try to sell it - I have been so lucky that people buy my work just from word of mouth. If I actually made an effort I could have something like what you have. I pray for the confidence to go for it.
You can do this Kate. Nothing bad will happen if you fail or get rejected. Your work stands on its won merit and will find the audience it deserves. Have faith - you got this!
rejection hurts only for the first 20 ish times and then you get used to it. it's just like exercising when it's painful at the beginning but you start to like it after a while.
I think you speak the truth. Sometimes you have to step back and take an honest look at yourself and add up the pluses and minuses. Fix what’s wrong and continue to do what’s right.
If you want something so badly it aches inside then I'm pretty confident in saying that you'll do whatever it takes to achieve the thing you are yearning for. So many people want the end result but not the work in between. All I'm trying to do is promote the questions you should be asking yourself and trying to come up with an answer. I stick by what i say because i see it every day on social media and those who write to me. After 13 years I want this more than ever and I work harder than ever before because I have a goal and an objective and I will not stop until i reach it - however hard or difficult it may be. Hope that helps...
Let's be honest. In the art world, what REALLY matters is connections. If one has the support of art galleries, museums, curators, art consultants (for ANY reason that most of the times has nothing to do with art or talent), nothing else is important. Work of awful quality and aesthetics can be promoted and sold. In the biggest galleries around the world we see terrible works. Mostly. Terrible works. It's not because the artist really wanted to be artist. It's because someone for some reason decided to invest in that person and promote their work, and establish their name.
Rule no. 1 , not everyone can succeed financially as an artist. Face the facts . But it is incredibly good fun trying , mixed with a roller coaster of emotions. And what a blast when you sell a painting !
I've been thinking of quitting art, or whatever it is I make. I don't even think it's considered art, and what's good for making a career out of art if you don't even know the basics or anything about it. I WISH I had enough talent (or money) to be able to make this something that'll be good looking, actually be accurate to what an artist it suppose to do, or just something I'm proud of!
What is it you are passionate about? If it is something creative then don't give up. Find something that makes you smile - if only for yourself. That is a great starting point to develop from. Talent is only a stepping stone and is not a precursor to success. Hard work and practice is the key. Hope you find the thing you are looking for . Don't give up
@@SwarezArt You're right, I just want to try my best sir. I tend to end up to comparing my work to someone else, whom I know has been practicing and doing this for a while. My dream has always been to make scenic backgrounds and landscapes, and I do it because I like doing it, and it makes me happy. So yes, you're absolutely right about that, it really is a craft isn't it? I take your advice to heart, thanks man.

Thank you very much - that's very kind of you!
I love your work at the back ground
Thank you so much 😀
Brilliant and honest advice that applies on so many levels of success. Cheers mate.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
This is great advice for every area of creativity. I'm not an artist, I'm a writer, but without me pushing myself forward I wouldn't get anywhere. I am working around the clock sometimes. Its brilliant advice. Work smart. xx
perfect words I needed to hear at this point in time. thank you so much
Glad it was helpful! You are very welcome
Thanks for being honest. You are telling the truth. Luckily I have a retirement to depend on. I still want to paint.
My pleasure!
YOUR A GREAT ARTEST; AND A GREAT PERSON...
Thank you very much Luis!
Thank you! you're absolutely right!
Love it, perfect, nuff said
realest thing I've heard all day!! thanks for sharing!!
Watched this one for the 2nd time after maybe 6 month. I am glad to realize that I’m doing so much more than then in order to make it as an artist. And glad to still answer your question now with “ I can do sooooo much more about it” YEAH
Great to hear! Thank you for sharing!
This man is a great example
Thanks for this advice
No problem!
Good to be reminded of this important principle. Thank you.
this helps because it let me know i need to relax. im alredy doing everything i can and im putting that work in i just have to keep it going. im still just trying figure shit out lol.
You’ll get there Gavyn, just keep consistent. That’s the key. Thank you for watching.
Very tough one to answer as it depends on what you define as being ready!!
shannie medrano hope that helps? Not sure if it does...
Love this advice. Thank you.
Hard work is the difference between art being a profession... aka your job... vs art being a hobby... just for fun whenever you feel like it
You are amazing
And you are very kind! Thank you...
Thank you so much Wendy! Most kind of you...
Absolutely brilliant advice!
Thank you so much Kim, really appreciate that :)
Great vid. So true.
Thank you so much!
Ouch, that stung! Now I'm retired I have the time I said I lacked to paint when I worked full time but I always put off going into my studio space to work and I don't keep a schedule of art exhibitions and competitions I can enter. Thank you for the metaphorical kick up the backside.
My pleasure Irene - glad it helped!!!
@@SwarezArt I guess it's why you do it :) It's difficult to get good honest down to earth advice and I get the impression that a lot of people who are in the business of selling or making art are somewhat like car salesmen. I suspect they're lying to me but I can't quite work out how.
@@10AntsTapDancing it's an all to familiar story - you are right. Such a minefield of tricksters and greed
Thanks for this, I constantly create, work on the skill set. I am doing everything I can, I know it, it's hard to believe it at times, but I know what's stopping me, and I got my exit plan. ✌🏽✌🏽
You're welcome!
Great advice indeed!
Maybe a nice subject for the Q&A. cheers.
Thanks Tod - that could definitely make a good video some day. Will add it to the list!! 👍
@@SwarezArt Thanks 👍
Look, I will tell you. I was a pro portrait artist Julian Freud style when I was young, then I picked up again when the kids had grown up- living in Cornwall did impasto versions of local scenes, emigrated ( we had to) its cultural Siberia theyve done it thats enough. The emphasis is on the past. No outlets a blank. I go on line to the galleries, keep getting favourited, know I am good but not one sale, abandoned it.
Great advice
Thanks Janine!
Fix what’s wrong and continue to do what’s right.
jimmy h thanks Jimmy, wise words indeed!
Thank you GREAT ADVICE
My pleasure Giancarlo
Thank you.
You're welcome!
So true... great advice. Thank you...
My pleasure!
It is true that I don't want It enough but It is what I want most among all the other alternative carrees!
Thank You!
My pleasure Danny!
If your hearts not in it, people will see it. It will show in your work.
Well said Elisha!
That's a great point and very well made Konstantinos; thanks for sharing!
Humble advice nice
Thank you!
07:34 black and red painting... f*ING AMAZING
Thank you so much dude!
The video stops at 7 :25 . There is no 7:34
