It seems like a lot of this advice can also be applied to being an entrepreneur or a musician or other vocations where someone is self employed and responsible for bringing in their own income. I'm really interested in abstract painting but never realized how difficult it is to create. I'm really enjoying your informative and entertaining talks. Please continue.
Being creative requires confidence and being spontaneous doesn't come easily. It takes serious guts to engage with our creative side. That in itself shouldn't be underestimated. When I'm feeling dry and out of the flow I simply make marks with no intention or objective in mind; just that, in the moment. I close my eyes or move to the sound of music, anything to get the flow going. Soon enough you'll find that something emerges. Also, I think it's important to treat it like a diary entry and disregard the thought of what others might think of it. Who cares, just enjoy yourself and see what happens. In the times we are living in this simple act can be revolutionary.
On behalf of all us abstract painters, thank you. We have the hardest job of all: we have to create something no one has ever seen before and then have it make sense to the human eye and brain. A bit tougher than painting a posie or a puppy.

Hi Ed , I enjoy all your videos and very helpful advise , I approached galleries a few years back and received a stack of rejection letters , so I have found my voice in creating and opened my own outdoor gallery under natures canopy , now galleries are approaching me and trying to get my work in their galleries , my issue is the 50% commission they want , my pricing is consistant , posted on my website and in my gallery which is seasonal in my area , I am in Ontario Canada , so during the long winter months I have considered gallery representation to get my work in front of as many eyes as possible , however, I don't think it is right to double my prices just to be in a gallery to offset the high commissions , any thoughts ?
Hi Daniel - thanks for your feedback. Yes, this is tricky because your clients as they are now will be used to your prices and the way you do things. A sudden and abrupt change in that can result in confusion or it may lead to no-one buying at all. I have had one experience like this actually. Not a negative impact but one where the prices became just too high so nothing happened. 50% of nothing is still nothing - no matter the ticket price. Not sure if that helps but it's all I got!

Great tips. Bit of Individual contradiction in some points i.e. not liking prints but pulling out a calendar (technically a form of print) overall, we take the positive out of it and you’ve made a lovely, informative video! Thanks!!! :)
Thank you! Technically, it's a print yes, but not one I offer for sale. In fact the calendar company that approached me does everything and each Christmas I grab myself a few to give away as thank yous to clients and the like. They are also offered as corporate gifts through the calendar company as part of their huge catalogue of titles the have. So actually, I have very little input with them. So my dislike of prints still stands but that's for reasons of decision making, quality control and time taken to get it right. It's just not the right time for me yet. Maybe one day - we'll see!
You have what a real artist needs is your works conects with people and i feel connectedd with the painting on the minute 6:55 the green one love it👍🙏🎨
Thank you so so much - most kind of you. I think this is the green one you were referring to: www.swarez.co.uk/modern-art-paintings-for-sale/if-the-wind-could-speak/
I uploaded my art on Etsy and Saachi Art. I later discovered that the only people that viewed my art were those I sent there via a link... So I asked myself, why do I need those platforms, it's not like 2007 when only a few websites had e-commerce.
This is very true - they have become saturated over the last few years. The game is changing now and in ways none of us can predict. Stay sharp and you'll get through it .
I really LOVE your work and your approach; spot on "dont's". Your paintings make me think of what I see when I dream or meditate, a form of photo realism but from another dimension. Just BEAUTIFUL, would love to see your work in person! Yeah, I beat the starving artist out the door (LOVE that!) 16 years ago, did very well for myself as a historical reproduction potter, and folks willingly paid what I asked. People WANT to buy from you if they think you are happy and prosperous, and especially if you show a general sense of appreciation. At 58, I had to leave the pottery for health reasons and have gone back to my first love, photo realistic oil painting. I am now 60, and continue to do well, thanks to my wonderful patrons. Liked and subscribed, thank you, Happy New Year 2020 and Much Love from New Mexico USA! Julia
So, do you have an online source for large canvases? I live in a small town on the south Oregon coast and the largest width I can find is 60 inches unprimed so I noticed you have so pretty large canvases and there is no harm in asking, right? So any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Jeff. I buy large rolls of canvas and then everything gets stretched individually after it's painted. So no part of this is an off-the-shelf solution I'm afraid. Try looking of r canvas suppliers then look for stretcher bars and then you can make whatever canvas sizes you want! Hope that helps.
Love your work and how you market it. The canvas that you paint before stretching, don't seem to have any ripples. Is it because you don't use water-based paint (Acrylics)?
Yes, exactly! As I use an oil-based paint (enamels) I don't get that traditional reaction between water evaporation and it's effect on a cotton-based material. It's a familiar story though and all down to physics I'm afraid. A great observation and thank you for your generous feedback!
Thank you so much for you videos - you are fantastic! I have a feeling that you are so close to me, like a native: your words seem so close to me, they are so in tune with my heart - its amazing! I am only at the start of my artist way, but your wise advice helps me navigate among this gigantic stream of information, very useful, but immensely vast and therefore beyond the reach. Your words always bring me back to my place, make me think of my own unique path and this is what is really important. Thanks for your work. I sincerely thank you and wish you all. From cold Sibiria, with love 🤗❤👀
@Swarez Art In a similar video related to the art galleries where you suggested to be avoided, I wanted to ask you what do you think about artist residency? Famous artists or not I never did one because I have enough ateliers to work, but as an experience just to create a changing location and so on I am curious. But I don't like the approach of asking not for a little money without any guarantee to win. It would be fair to partecipate, enroll for free and if they just like your way to express yourself, meaning if they like your art they give you money, space, time and exposure and so on. I mean it's me helping them with my art not them me. But this is another story! The money can come from the country itself promoting new forms of art from professional artists like us to younger generations. What do you think of any residency that is promoted this way? Have you done any in your lifetime? Thank you Swarez Ciao Luca (Luca Facchini Studio.com)
Hi Luca - I don't have any knowledge or opinions on artists' residencies -I'm afraid. I don't know anything about them so it would be unwise and foolish to pass judgement. Sorry about that.
When buying oil paints there are so many different types of pigments colors in oil paints.? And paint brushes for oil paint. What is the best brand of oil paint to be using.??
Unfortunately I am no expert when it comes to oil paints - never used them. I use enamel pints which, though oil based, is where the similarity ends. Sorry i can't be of more help.
It's true that Art is never an easy profession, but if your heart is in there, your integrity wll show and blossom.
Beautifully said!

Thank you so much !!
YOU MAKE ME WANT TO DO ABSTRACT PAINTING SO MUCH!!!!thank youuuu
You should!
Julia
That's a wonderful story Julia and thank you very much for sharing that with us and for subscribing!
Do you know any beach-towel manufacturers looking for bright colorful original pictures [acrylic on paper]? or how about neck ties?
@@SwarezArt You are awesome!
@@FiroozehBowden Thank you!!
Thank you Swarez
Ciao Luca (Luca Facchini Studio.com)
Hi Luca - I don't have any knowledge or opinions on artists' residencies -I'm afraid. I don't know anything about them so it would be unwise and foolish to pass judgement. Sorry about that.
I just found you on RUclips, and I definitely subscribed to your channel.
Thank you for the advice!!
My pleasure!
Great tips thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you Dirk - much appreciated!
Thank you. Beautiful abstracts, love the bright colours.
Most kind John - thank you!
Thank you for for your well thought advice. My first time seeing one of your videos. You are a bright light.
I am subscribed AND inspired..!
Thanks very much Tom!
Can you make a part 2? Ive been learning a lot from you. Love your paintings ✨
