Being able to see the world as shapes of value, especially colored shapes and objects, is a master skill to cultivate as a visual artist. It's important to the artist because in order to compose and arrange shapes in our pictures, we must first see and understand their inherent grayscale value.
How do we train our eyes to see the world in value? This video will demonstrate some very simple strategies we can use when we observe the world around us.

OMG The timing on me squinting and you changing it to black and white was so perfect! like holy shit i thought i went color blind for a moment!
:)
SAME 😂😂
Same here
this was really VALUEable information!
:D
"You had me at squinting" :P The moment I tried it, I was like Woah, I seeeeee!
Awesome!
You're welcome Ash! Yes value is king and is the first step. Look at the great colorist of the past. Monet, Sorrolla, Sargent. All were excellent in value and tonal composition. That's not by accident :)
Thank you for putting this video up, I've been studying art for years now but its always useful to watch videos like this as a refresher. Really helpful :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS HELPED ME LEARN SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN STUDYING FOR A FEW WEEKS IN 8 MINUTES YOU ARE AMAZING!!
thank you for focusing on the importance of values and breaking it down into simple steps to learn (for a beginner like me). Very nicely done. Thank you.
You're welcome. Observing values is such an important skill
You're welcome. Good value observation takes a little practice. Stay tuned for the next videos in this series. It will really help you with your tones.
Excellent explanation! Thank you! I'm able to grasp the concept of value when it's explained and pointed out to me, but still struggle to see values on my own. The steps you laid out are very helpful, particularly looking for borders. Thanks again!
+JessicaCinNY thank you. It takes a lot of repetition
Thank you so much for uploading this. I always have problem with values and tones.
Thanks! Will do.
instead of squinting I just have to take off my glasses o.o
:)
XD
Same lmao
My right eye is kinda blurry so just close my left eye😂
🤣
Thank you this has made a lot of sense to me now and has given me some useful tools
I've watched other vids about value but still can't put it into practice no matter how hard I try. This is the only video that teached me HOW to see in value. Agh, and to think that it is as simple as squinting! I practiced earlier and saw how I improved a lot immediately. Thank you so much! No words can measure the amount of gratitude I feel ;v; Will definitely check out more of your vids!
Thank you so much. Glad it was helpful

Yes indeed ✍️
This is a GEM!
Thank you :) Value is such an important skill
@@ChrisLegaspi_art yeah! So true...with most of my paintings the common feedback I get is that the values could have been better! And this videos series has been so helpful for understanding values🤩
Thank you. Good observation. Value is a building block of drawing and painting!
that was a terrific video!!!
thank you so much. Please share if it was helpful
When I squinted you turned off the colour, I was almost like woaaah! This really works haha God be with you
Thank you. Glad it worked for you
After many attempts, i understand squinting, actually. Thank you.

Good info, but your FRESHDESIGNER.COM goes to an ad page, disappointing, link and website not there
How why, why does squinting work
Holy, your video trained me to see values so well in such a short time that the optical ilusion at the end didnt work:DD
haha nice! 😂

Great. Can you also do Russian subtitles? Thank you

lol
LIght house in Kauai... :) I have the same photo!

Thank you so much, Chris! I really wanted to go to your website and read and watch more but 1) Your site keeps redirecting so I couldn’t get there.
2) When I change my settings to prevent that redirecting to spam, I landed on a site, same name as yours but totally unrelated. It looks like your site has been hijacked.
Do you have another site to go read more about what you explain?
Thank you!
Nathalie
Thank you. Yes my current site is drawwithchris.com
CTRL+Y on photoshop
too : ) !
Good tip. Thank you :)
Something wrong with your website? Can't find any article.
The website has changed. Will republish the article soon.
When I was younger I could blur my vision at will but now I try it my vision goes double instead :(
:)
I wonder if some people have an ability seeing "perfect value" and "relative value"
Yknow just like ppl who have perfect pitch or only relative pitch
Good point. I think about this a lot. I believe so.
😍😘
🙏♥️
open photoshop > import image > desaturated > blur effect > save > done
If I squint my eyes become tired instantly XD
Jk. I mean you can use the diffusion filter in gimp or a matte sea-through folder to cover your scene to simulate the effect of squinting.
