Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Superb example of “Value does all the work, but colour gets all the credit”
I took a photo of the screen after your painting was finished then I converted the photo to black and white and your painting was an excellent value representation.
Me, colorblind and reading the title: OwO
I used to know a colorblind man who painted on automobiles. People had to tell him what colors to use, but he was so good with that airbrush. He was talented like Frazetta talent.
I'm colorblind red green check out Irish artist Paul Henry also colorblind he inspired me to paint
u should forget the gray too
Black and White? YES PLEASE!
Instead of a black and white study which would be fun, I would rather see a Sepia based study or maybe a sepia and ochre but that is just me. Also a night time scene that is rainy and wet would be fun.
That sounds so interesting actually !!!
YES YES YES
Yes. Do a black & white please.
@mabyonedayicanbehappy I said what I meant. However you are partially correct, I would use it as instruction to do a similar but different scene for myself. I have no interest in doing any image I see on youtube or anywhere else. Would rather do my own images.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaa🎉
Black and White & night time painting 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My first portrait was of Marilyn Monroe, black & white from a black & white photo. It was crude in style, but, it looked just like Marilyn. It got me off to a good trip with oil paints.
I have never hit subscribe button as fast as when I heard you said "I'm not a fan of blending" because I REALLY love paintings that looks like shapes of colors and if you see the painting up close it would looks like jumbled color but if you take a step back you could see the whole picture. Also I have never heard of the tips you gave throughout the video and that helps a lot!! Although I paint as a hobby and not being too serious about that, now that I've found your channel I think I might improve my skills a little. Aah, sorry for babbling too much but I've never been this excited for a ling time. Thank you for the vids please keep making these vids!!
This video is the ultimate information needed to become a good painter, I am not kidding when I say is the perfect video.
...I remember when I use to be clueless about color theory and the value of color lol...now its like 2nd nature with people like you teaching and sharing your art knowledge on youtube....great lesson and explanation coach!!!
Take a photo of your palette showing all of the paint colors.
transfer photo to your computer or keep it on your device.
Edit photo to gray scale ( black and white )
You will see each color's true value.
A note on pronunciation.
Dissect is not pronounced the same way that bisect and trisect are.
The difference is that there are two s’s in diSSect making the prefix of dissect DIS and not DI.
BI sect is to cut in two pieces.
TRI sect is to cut in three.
But the prefix DIS has the meaning “”to undo” as in DIS appear or DIS like or DIS agree.
So, dissect means to unsection or to take apart.
this is exactly the video i needed to see! ive felt so confused, bc i always try to make my paintings more colorful but always end up looking muddy. thanks for inspiring me, ill definitely try this out!!
Please do a nocturnal painting. There are times when I want to paint a candle and have no clue how to make it glow. Also, yes, I would love for you to do a black-and-white portrait lesson.
I love this type of colorful realistic portrait
I've been doing some night time paintings so I'd really like to see how you tackle that - thanks Chris!
Will do!
@@paintcoach I second this, seeing how to handle a night time scene would be ace!
I'm colorblind so this is great!
Would love to see an oil painting in black/white. Thanks for all you have taught in all your vids
Great painting of Samuel Clemens
5:25 I always enjoy your videos but I have to admit this one actually gets me kind of excited to get back at it!
This is a great idea as a fun challenge, I'm becoming proper obsessed with your channel
Much love from South Africa
Thanks!
Values is something I've been struggling with in painting, and this seems like an awesome (and colourful, I love colourful) excercise to try out. Thanks for the video!
Yes please Chris - black and white value painting!
if anyone wears glasses they can also take off their glasses to help see bigger shapes, works better than squinting, ha ha! but it's just depends of bad/good ur vision is when taking off ur glasses idk, give it a swhirl!
I remove my glasses all the time!!
Yes on that black & white painting!
Improving out of sight from these vids! Thanks 🎉
Take a photo of the scene or if working from a photo print it in black and white. Simple without all the squinting. Squinting causes wrinkles
I'm addicted to water mixable oils..after your video.thank you😊
A gorgeous portrait! I will "go get painting"!
Yes, I would love to see the night scene please. I have an idea for a moonlit garden and I’d love to see how to capture moonlight (especially on a human face). 😊🌘
Yes please for black and white values 😊
Yes to the black and white. And yes to the nocturnal light scene as well. What a great idea!
As I watch this I can only say. Exactly everything I needed to hear.
You are right, its all about shadows.
Black and white painting please.
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom in art and teaching us in a way that anyone can understand.
Your a blessing!
God bless!
Agree with yes on black n white and the night scene
Big yes on the night/ glowing lights idea
Dude you and your words and your painting is amazing i’m grateful for your existence
Hihi im new to you. B&w pls yes. We did this at school. We painted in b&w on newspaper. Sweet.😁🏴
I'm learning in digital, but very much enjoying the content so far. I've learned quite a bit just thinking about your instructives.
Kinda crazy how young you look. Your art feels like that of a master.
Yeaaaah I'm gonna try this exercise for my next painting, I loooved the final result!!
Wow! This video just answered to my biggest struggle with using colors. Thank you so much!
I wanna tHank you from the deepest core of my heart. Im a makeup artist , and you have helped me so much with this video. Thank u again!
Black & White...YES PLEASE!
Nighttime backlit scenery and glowing lights on a dark background! I found this video on my main feed thru YT algorithm. It was a great refresher on colors vs. values thank you!
Thank you so much, Chris! I'm loving your videos!
For someone who has worked with Prismacolor pencils for years, this is really great!
PLEASE do that nocturnal scene you talk about! Those are my favorite!
Thanks Chris! Neat exercise!
This is my breakthrough lesson. Wow. Thank you.
Loved this, and your videos "learn how to paint with oils in 10 minutes", and "why oils are better than acrylics".
I would love to see a video on acrylic paint habits to break when beginning to paint in oils, and what to do instead.
yes for Black and white painting please !
Wow that really turned out Great. Amazing Skills.🤩
Yes please do a nocturnal scene to show how to use the dark values to make light glow xxxx
You are so talented...and talk so much sense...i like you and your work so much...just subscribed...😎
so cool! i always wondered how people use crazy colors to paint something normal-looking.
I’m a gouache kid but this video was INCREDIBLY helpful!!! This whole time I was paying so much more to color rather than value and couldn’t understand why nothing was coming together, but now I see value over coloring is really the key.
I’m going to use your tips and apply them to my portraits. Amazing and informative video! ❤
Night scene would be great
You made a comment on a previous video re using the colours you like as opposed to what you see that turned out really good for me on two portraits but I could use some help with night scenes thanks again and really like this one of yours
yes- a black and white painting video please.
WTH, that's gorgeous!
Excellent demo and explanation!! Shockingly exceptional!!!!! Autobahn to artistic excellence!!!
I'm painting coach. Thanks for the exercise. Look forward to your videos.
Awesome! Thank you!
Sound advice Coach. Never thought of painting in this manner but will put more thought into painting in values.
I absolutely have to try this exercise!
Yes please! A black and white tutorial would be awesome. I would alstroemerias appreciate nighttime illumination tutorial.
This came out really cool and is a great idea!
Would love to see both BLACK AND WHITE and NOCTURNE!!
Really like your videos! I use watercolor and I can tell your advice translates to watercolor too!!
Very true, I like that concept! thanks for the idea!
I would love to see the Black/White exercise. Thank you for sharing your teaching skills.
We love your channel!
Yes please black & WHT it would be a good excersise
Yes please do black and white. I would love to see your point of view on glowing light. I've watched several videos already but feel your tutorial would be very informative. Thanks for all the content and posting such a variety.
Fun to watch and it ended as a very alive and vibrant portrait. Great demonstration
Yes to black and white video and yes to video with nocturnal painting
thank you, you helped me a lot in making a color lighter, didn't know that I can use primary colors to make other hue lighter. subbed
Hello Sir, just had you recommended to me. You’re explanations are very clear and concise. However, your masterwork is also due to terrific drawing skill! Wow! Appreciate your talent, we do.
Love this. This is perfect for explaining value
Very helpful - can't wait to try this!
Love your information on color, it's spot on , only thing is I can only work in acrylic paints due chronic pain issues. But I love following you.
Brilliant advice 😁🙌 and your hair 😍 oh wow!!
I like your teaching style. I would love to see you make videos for both black and white and illuminated lights. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Yes! GLOWING PLEASE
I loved your video. Great challenge. I work with watercolor, but I think most of this is applicable. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this! I've been wanting to try this approach and I didn't know how to tackle it. This was very helpful. You have no idea how much your videos have helped me grow as a painter. Thank you!
This is an amazing piece of work, I'm getting out my paint brushes now! 👩🎨
Very thoughtful video. Thank you.
Fantastic. Love your tips
Excellent color advice!

Im Just a beginner and your coaching is great thanks🌻
Thanks for the Squinting reminder
Love it beautiful it’s so incredible words escape me …..thanks so much
This is just what I needed today!
Thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial...I forget how to use tone in my quest to nail the colour value of something and this is like FREEDOM to me! Thanks!
Great advice..!👌🏻👌🏻 Could you post more ideas and advice with tutorials like these..
Yes of course!
Perfect. When it's with limited pallette you can make it for paints by numbers and many people will follow you :)
Excellent tutorial. Thank you. I've subscribed.
Funny, this was one of the first experiments I did myself as I "self-taught".
I say that like I have actually achieved a level of competence, but I can assure you I'm a long ways off of that... Hehe. I come from digital photography for about 20 years. Applying that to learning to sketch and color.
But I did find it interesting. I used only 3 colors and did a bit more blending than this, but it did have a fun color remapping look not too dissimilar to this.
Great exercise.
This looks amazing!
black and white painting pleeeease :3 and Merry Christmas to all
