Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

That’s exactly what I say to my drawing students. You are not a photocopier machine. The image already exist, why would you want to reproduce it exactly. Being able to express its own creativity comes with the trust in our skill. I am not proud when people tell me that my drawing or painting looks like a picture. That is failure, to me. That’s why your coaching is so valuable, Chris. THANK YOU

Hello Paint Coach. I hav watched alot of your videos. Im not a pro painter im not a student or something. I just wanted to paint my Loved film chatactors...actors...sportstars with oil. So i just started it. With this video u gave me full clearness...sry for my bad english not my motherspeech. I thought to paint like a pro i hav to do hyper realistic clean paintings. But with your words ...artists are no printingmachines(something like that) and with this full video i got clearness...i hav not to do hyper real paint strokes. I was blocked because i thought im not good enough to do this...but u helped me as i saw your painting at the end what i hav to do...and thats what makes me now going more essy to next painting because there is not that thing to do a hyper realistic painting with no visible lines ect...hope u know what i want to say. Thnk u!

Dude, I'm an experienced amateur painter and couldn't get a portrait of my 2 year old grandson right, struggled forever because after all it's my grandson and I wanted at me to be happy with it. This video nailed it. I know value is often the problem with amateur painters, and I've fooled around looking at black and whites of the source photo etc, but following your explicit ideas in this video helped me resolve it. Thanks a million!! If it weren't my grandson, I would have been ok with what I had, but you got me tweaking it just right. Thank you, thank you!!!!

Paint Coach yes it does! I’ve been trying to step up the portraits and i’ve recently started working on using the planes of the face to guide my brushwork and you can definitely tell a difference. I’d love to hear more about how you use the proportional divider; for example, do you use a picture in the same scale (size) as the painting you’re going to do etc. this portrait is so powerful too, so much emotion in the eyes.

5:20 I practice digitally and at the beginning I was able to choose the right colors straight from the color palette, but in order to improve my values I started drawing only in black and white and at the very end adding colors with the "color" overlay. I'm great at painting in black and white, but when I returned to color... I couldn't see the value in it. when I tried working with paints, it turned out to be even worse. in turn, painting a monochromatic image with paints turned out to be extremely easy. conclusion - you shouldn't work only in black and white for too long. I did it for at least 8 months...

draw correcting=measuring, less detailed, break down: dark and light shape, cover with paint, value more important than color, not too dark and too light, take pictures
to compare, softening the edge, choose what detailed, highlight not pure white, pick what to show, big brush thin paint ending small brush with thick paint.

    You know ?
I prefer a more impressionistic look.
I like the idea of defining an object with the fewest strokes possible.
But there is value in highly accurate painting. The things you learn about paint and anatomy are priceless.
Telling people what you like is one thing. Telling other people what their painting should look like is overstepping your bounds a bit.
Would you tell Michelangelo he needs to loosen shit up a bit ?
Teach people the techniques. Your thoughts on restraint, space and volume are great but I notice a few of your paintings are almost photorealistic then you insist everyone should not do that.
Let people figure out what they like.
