Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

That’s exactly what I say to my drawing students. You are not a photocopier machine. The image already exist, why would you want to reproduce it exactly. Being able to express its own creativity comes with the trust in our skill. I am not proud when people tell me that my drawing or painting looks like a picture. That is failure, to me. That’s why your coaching is so valuable, Chris. THANK YOU
Simple people just ask photocopies on canvas.
i couldn’t figure out how to explain this to people, but you put it into words perfectly.
Thank you. I is very important!
Iam 86 years old I love portrait painting ,I did not attend an art college, but find such help from this young man’s advice I have learned so much from his tutorial today ,delighted I switched on this so helpful tutorial today thank you so much,
“ We are artists and artists make decisions on what to show and what not to show “ such an inspirational quote 😌
A tip : you can watch movies on flixzone. Been using it for watching a lot of movies recently.
@Spencer Casen yea, I've been using Flixzone for months myself =)
Though the same
Thank you Chris. You're the first one to help me understand how to do portraits. Not focusing so much on likeness but on value. You really are a great teacher. Sheila G.
I don’t even oil paint, and I learn so much from your tutorials. I am learning portraits with watercolor and trying to muster the courage for oils. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Oil painting is really fun. I would advise to get Water Missable Oil Paints. Good luck.
Thanks again for your insight on this subject, I keep on making mistakes in portraits, and your tips are so easy to understand but so tricky to learn and adapt in my painting process. Now I have to go get painting I guess...
You are the best! Thank you! I really appreciate how you explain things. It makes complete sense to me and I find myself remembering things you’ve said as I’m painting.
This is very helpful for me, thank you so much! I’ve learned a lot and I appreciate you describing in detail how you go about your advice as well as giving examples and other methods we could do. In just one video I learned everything I wanted for beginning a portrait. 🙏🏻
Wonderful advice thank you so much for sharing ,I’m eager to do try implementing these to see just how much my skills and portraits improve
I appreciate all you content creators. Your paintings are amazing
How you explain the concept of portraits, like loose strokes but accurate proportions is inspiring. I love your videos.
I have sent so many people to your channel! You have REALLY improved my portrait painting skills!
Chris, you are spot on with your portraits, amazing. I'm the long time watercolor painter that's getting into oils and just sent for my water soluble oils. Your videos, your teaching, tips , are so helpful.. Thank you so much.. from Tallahasse
Thank you so much, it's gonna be helpful. I just attempted my first one last week.
Clear as water tips. Thanks so much. We often feel pressure thinking about the outcome, but the most important is the process from beginning to end. Loved how you end the video. Thanks so much! Your work is very much appreciated. Blessings and take care.
Hello Paint Coach. I hav watched alot of your videos. Im not a pro painter im not a student or something. I just wanted to paint my Loved film chatactors...actors...sportstars with oil. So i just started it. With this video u gave me full clearness...sry for my bad english not my motherspeech. I thought to paint like a pro i hav to do hyper realistic clean paintings. But with your words ...artists are no printingmachines(something like that) and with this full video i got clearness...i hav not to do hyper real paint strokes. I was blocked because i thought im not good enough to do this...but u helped me as i saw your painting at the end what i hav to do...and thats what makes me now going more essy to next painting because there is not that thing to do a hyper realistic painting with no visible lines ect...hope u know what i want to say. Thnk u!

Great tips! I came here hoping to learn something and I did! I learned I do most of this naturally but definitely need improvements with #4. Thanks for the lessons.
Great clear explanation of values within portrait painting , loose but accuracy of line .Very much appreciated . Many thanks .
Glad it was helpful!
I love it !
I really hope you try to paint without a reference photo
It's really a great experience
keep going ❤️
you are a real good teacher!
when i started painting portraits it felt like clay or indeed cutting something out of wood, pinnokio is my favorite fairytale i think that's why i clicked with your explanation and how you come across as a person really nice thank you for the lessons!
Thank you !!!! Really helpful as usual!!
Thank you so much!! Very helpful!
This couldn't have come at a better time! For the next three weeks I'll be working on a portrait in painting class
Larissa van Aarle hope it helps!
Love that you're from Virginia,I miss it so much, thanks for sharing these nice tips.👍🏻
You are so welcome!
U explain amazingly well thank you
Dude, I'm an experienced amateur painter and couldn't get a portrait of my 2 year old grandson right, struggled forever because after all it's my grandson and I wanted at me to be happy with it. This video nailed it. I know value is often the problem with amateur painters, and I've fooled around looking at black and whites of the source photo etc, but following your explicit ideas in this video helped me resolve it. Thanks a million!! If it weren't my grandson, I would have been ok with what I had, but you got me tweaking it just right. Thank you, thank you!!!!
Thank you, brilliant tips.
Your talent and pacience for teaching is beyond my understanding.... Thank you!
Greets from Costa Rica!
You're welcome! Costa Rica is on my list of places to visit!
@@paintcoach whenever you come here, please do a video about it. It would be awesome if you visit places and paint something from there... Like a landscape or an historical building
Thanks Paint Bro!
Great painting and really good advice, especially about the planes and the three dimensional form.
I've seen other artists work from that same exact photograph before. Is that a famous photo?
So many gold nuggets in this video. Subscribed
THANKS!
Such great tips....never heard of taking a photo to compare value accuracy. Thank you. Love that portrait...wrinkles make a face interesting! ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
You are amazing, thank you for your content
Helpful tips thank you for sharing mate
Any time!
Yes,…. I liked your video and your process
Love yr vids mate
I lile the concept of planes it makes sense. Awesome
Great advice thank you
I sketched mine in chalk, then am transferring it onto the paint surface, then you don't have to mess around with it. Also use a light source to make it easier to see the values
Great content Paint Coach. Thanks
I appreciate that!
Thanks for the Helpful advice
Happy to help
this was rlly helpful, thank u! :)
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Love your channel man,it really inspired me to start painting again.
Btw can you make a tutorial of Jack Torrance from The Shining (the one from your channel's cover).
THE VIDEO WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR IS FINALLY HERE
lol hope it lives up to the expectations
Paint Coach yes it does! I’ve been trying to step up the portraits and i’ve recently started working on using the planes of the face to guide my brushwork and you can definitely tell a difference. I’d love to hear more about how you use the proportional divider; for example, do you use a picture in the same scale (size) as the painting you’re going to do etc. this portrait is so powerful too, so much emotion in the eyes.
Excellent sir
Outstanding 🌞👍🙏👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌😀🤗
Chris, I love your work and your precise teaching methods. I am trying to paint a portrait of a friend with an almost identical grey beard to your 'old man' in this tutorial. I thought I had knocked the colour back from white sufficiently but it still looks like someone threw a snowball at the canvas. Could you please tell me what colours went into the beard in your painting?
Great video!
I'm liking the very last part of the video 😆 haha
Excellent portrait painting
Thank you so much 😀
Phenomenal video! I did a lot of monochromatic painting in high school but haven’t in a while. I’ve been itching to do monochromatic painting again and will do! What camera are you using to film this video? So crystal clear!
Thank you
Nice tips 😊
Good job👍
Can we use those tips for acrylic painting? Thanks for sharing all your tips ❤️
Thank you!
Welcome!
hey coach, you know whats funny is, when i try a self portrait it always comes out looking like a guys dad i knew in high school. never fails, and what amazes me is, i'm here only an arms distance away from the canvas. they never look like me. i need a lot of practice on portraits. you have great tips. i am listening.
good gods, i love your channel.
really a nice portrait ❤️
Thank you so much 😀
5:20 I practice digitally and at the beginning I was able to choose the right colors straight from the color palette, but in order to improve my values I started drawing only in black and white and at the very end adding colors with the "color" overlay. I'm great at painting in black and white, but when I returned to color... I couldn't see the value in it. when I tried working with paints, it turned out to be even worse. in turn, painting a monochromatic image with paints turned out to be extremely easy. conclusion - you shouldn't work only in black and white for too long. I did it for at least 8 months...
So good! Helpful and nice to watch :) x
Hi really like your website. Could you keep painting and do the commentary over it. I like to see what's going on as you speak?
This just made a lot of sense to me!!! Thank you! Your video popped up at the right time. I was getting insecure about my artworks 😖 will definitely take these pieces of advice to heart ❤️
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Man, Bear Grylls looks rough these days.
Great Vid :D
Nice👍❤
The good and reliable old man from Pexels. Very paintable lol
God I love your art style.
Sir, the most difficult part for me while painting is outline of the face and features which you draw perfectly! I do not understand how your portrait sketches turns out real in the end while mine just doesn't match the original pictures, How can I improve the beginning sketch in order for the portrait to turn out real? Please guide and thank you so much!
Were you inspired by Norman Rockwell or J. C. Leyendecker? Or? Any of the Wyeths? I respect your work, skill and approach! Bravo! Good tutorial! Respectfully and Gratefully yours Gregg Oreo Long Beach CA Etats Unis
I cannot stand the blandness of this guy’s personality, but damn what an artist.
Great Tips. Things I instinctively know but am afraid to believe in.
thank you alot that's heelpp
You're welcome!
You are perfect teacher of portraits Drawing.
Do you have any tips for finding good references and also where to find them?
pexels.com. Pixabay.com and Unsplash.com
draw correcting=measuring, less detailed, break down: dark and light shape, cover with paint, value more important than color, not too dark and too light, take pictures
to compare, softening the edge, choose what detailed, highlight not pure white, pick what to show, big brush thin paint ending small brush with thick paint.
I haven’t used oils before. I am planning to do this with acrylics. Is that okay?
i think so, you should probably blend more than you would with oils.
Acrylic dries faster.. so you may face difficulty in blending colours
The light in the dark is darker than the lights hard to get.
When we practice , do we have to use canvass? Or can you recommend something else?
you could try canvas pads, any art supply store should carry them.
Try canvas pads, really useful
Like your points but did you say 'drawling' for drawing? Can't understand!
How long does it take you to finish this piece? Anyways good content, keep it up bro
Thanks! about 2 hours
I guess its the eight shades of cage now, cant hide from me
Coloca legenda para o mundo todo. Não entendo inglês 😂
So just winging it when it comes to proportions just doesn't work, huh? No wonder I struggle 🤦. Also any chance that you can paint with just one color but in different values? I've heard artists say before that color doesn't matter. But I need to see it to believe it
Is that a collage of Nicholas Cage behind you??
Yeah he said in another vid
How much time did you give to draw this masterpiece?
around 2 hrs
@@paintcoach can i use these tips even for acrylics?
While u teach I fall
💕💕💞🌹
The hottest painter after Marshall Vandruff 😍
Why not use acrylic?
Love your tips BTW, but I want to try w Acrylic, but i know it dries faster than oil.
Portrait looks a little like Sharlto Copley
It seems that you don't use thinner or linseed oil. Is this your common practice?
I recognize the man in portrait. Who is he?
Local hobo #672
Man, the portrait is Old man Zoolander lol
You know ?
I prefer a more impressionistic look.
I like the idea of defining an object with the fewest strokes possible.
But there is value in highly accurate painting. The things you learn about paint and anatomy are priceless.
Telling people what you like is one thing. Telling other people what their painting should look like is overstepping your bounds a bit.
Would you tell Michelangelo he needs to loosen shit up a bit ?
Teach people the techniques. Your thoughts on restraint, space and volume are great but I notice a few of your paintings are almost photorealistic then you insist everyone should not do that.
Let people figure out what they like.
But people want photocopies on canvas...
You've missed a shadow tone (left face side - cheek, left forehead side, eyes, hair and nose shadow were 2-3 tones lighter.
No hard feelings, this is CC.
Love your videos!
Is it though? Constructive Criticism? Sometimes it's just stroking your ego. Because telling him after the fact is not going to help him in any way.
Thanks man. God bless you in Jesus name Amen.
