I started a custom scroll saw wood art business out of my garage in December 2019. My goal was to make custom wood art for those who wouldn’t find what they wanted at generic home decor stores. I wanted to appeal to an audience like myself who’s into anime, video games and more. I’m happy to say that it’s been one whole year since I began, I have been self employed all year, gained all the legal knowledge of running my LLC legitimately, and have made nearly twice what I was making when I had an employer and was working 40+ hours a week. I get to work from home and be with my family. I get to create the custom art that makes me happy and makes me money. It wasn’t easy in the beginning few months, but I was patient and am fortunate for where I am today. If you’re reading this and want to make a living off of your art, don’t settle. Do/create what you love. Be patient. Life is good!

the best tip from this video is to sell bite size art (ie stickers or something) that is affordable to the masses as opposed to only expensive originals as to help get your name out there and create buzz. everything else is common sense =P
Selling out is when u compromise ur craft, ur morals, or ur honesty in the pursuit of success. Making a living (even mad stacks jk lol) doing anything....even art is NOT selling out. Going from realism to abstract or singing pop songs though u prefer the blues....being someone u r not, supporting a false image, manipulation for the sake of popularity is selling out. Yes all people should be paid for what they love to do, because we do not want people in the wrong jobs doing work just for money. When people do things just for money and they hate their job we create just greed and people who feel like robots. We create a society that values money over love and it is when you get a dentist, teacher or a lawyer that does a shitty job just to get done with his day and to get a paycheck. All people deserve to get paid for what they do even if they are not able to make the amount of money that well known artist do! With time we all get better at what we do! Simply amazing bro. I just loved the every words you spoke. it is so true. Mostry artist don't like word marketing, or they feel shy to sale, or they reserved to ask for money as an artist. But now new modern day artist will have ( Must have to ) learn marketing and feel proud about you. and Internet has made their job easy to sale. with maintaing 100% dignity. @@xBoomslang Porterfield's Fine Art Licensing. But there are MANY companies you can approach. If possible, go to the SURTEX show in NYC. They're all there, and you can speak to them in person. But, online, just Google 'art licensing'. You'll be able to tell who the good companies are!
wow this was so useful, heard it all the way through and a few of these were things i dont usually consider, i tend to be very self concious when trying to be confident cause i do not want to come out as cocky or arrogant, so its a bit dificult showing my work off to the world
LugeTolli same. I've tried some of these ideas and still selling less than other local "artists" who slap some scrap booking paper and copper wire onto a canvas for $200. Makes me literally nauseous. You need to be able to push/sell yourself. I can't. I detest marketing. I'm a very good artist, most people still ask if I can 'just' do something for free. If only they would 'just' pay me what it's actually worth!

Fantastic Points Adrain. It is funny to see so many negative comments here. Some people think if something is not helping them that doesn't make it ZERO value! it may be a big thing for some other person. what is important is that they are not realizing that they themselves are full of NEGATIVE ENERGY and they are so full that they are leaving the stains everywhere they go such as posting negative comments on youtube. However, Few things missing from this list are ARTIST'S NETWORK and SERENDIPITY! Artistic network means being part of a fraternity helps a WHOLE LOT! and serendipity means that going an unexpected route can sometimes prove fruitful. I mostly sell through word of mouth and found a niche but I don't depend on that and branch out whenever I can. so, love and cheers everybody. be grateful being yourself.
Because comments are negative does not mean people are not succeeding. Success is a day to day process - not an end product. And sometimes when we look at videos which purport to be "solutions" for difficult times those videos are NOT solutions not=r are they practical in the real world. They are more often than not hype to motivate the unmotivated or the unsure or the anxious - And in my book that's called "taking advantage of". It is always buyer beware - especially on line. Just because our youtube videos are super spiffy does not make them good. I would say that near 90% of videos online are not worth the time spent to listen to them. There are many writers to day calling themselves author not because they are any good but because independent publishing (rightly) allows both the good and the bad to appear spontaneously. It's always been up to the market to decide what is or is not worthy of their hard earned cash. And working hard at being the best we can be is still the only solution to getting anywhere - despite these "informative" videos. And whether we like it or not - the process has always been and forever will be a slow one - and never sure. C"est la vie.
Always be creating work and putting yourself out there. I liken it to a lottery scratcher ticket, you may be one ticket away from getting the break that you need.

I'm always posting to social media, (videos seem to show the sculpture work better than a bunch of 2D pics) aiming people to my RUclips gallery channel. It helps keep people interested as it takes so long to get a new sculpt complete.

Originality isn't key. Being new to a set of people is good, but the key is to be unoriginal in theme. The same basic sentiments sell over and over because we're still the same creatures. Sell what humans care about. You can't sell us what we don't.
Presumption one : we are all artists simply because we say we are. Presumption two : Everything we create is "art" rather than the physical product called "artwork". Presumption three: This is a valuable video simply because it exists.

This is not true at all. It may be true that that's the perception people have on Deviantart, but it reality has been the home for some of the greatest contemporary artists right now on the internet that have done this for over 6 years. I even got my first big clients in there. And they just revamped their design. Deviantart is awesome.
Just paint really good paintings and enjoy it. I'm farley new to painting but I know this about things if they are attractive and good it will sell, just like movies for instance. What I have noticed about local artist were I am from, so far in the few galleries I have been in it seems as if they are onley putting out safe paintings of the same boring stuff like the forest or grain elevators, I mean speaking for my self I find that a bit repetitive and boring it's as if everyone is in a wheat field painting contest or something.
So damned sick of the word "brand". Yes, art is a commodity and always has been going back to ancient Egypt, but it's also a means of expression much more than a means of production. Selling work is about making the right connections with individuals, it's not a corporate strategy. It's tragic that if you ask 100 art student who Caravaggio or Frans Hals or Goya or John Millet or Edouard Vuillard was, i'd guess maybe 10-15% would know of them. If you ask the same about Warhol (an artist I deeply admire as a social critic with deadpan wit more than anything else) you'll get a 100 out of a 100 with maybe a quarter of those who can tell his story in detail. Such is life in the new dark ages.
Problem with Etsy now is, if you live with another artist and THEY have Etsy, Etsy will notice more than one account using the IP and will remove one or both accounts.
I haven't either but what I do now is use the website just to show off my works and then later market myself to potential clients who viewed my site. It's also a great way to start conversations if you could load it to your cell phone. Update: Facebook allows you to make an art page you can market to as many people and friends you want to. Then ask each one what is their favorite type of art. This can lead to a sale.
So many sites to sell artwork does not mean anything sells. As in the "real" world, few actually do sell where many less make it. If you can't make it in a "brick and mortar" gallery or with an agent don't expect miracles online. Buyers are just (if not more) picky online as they are in "real life". In the studio we may work at being be painters and sculptors and sketchers. And we may even play artsy games at being an artist. BUT. Once we step outside our studios. . . we become business people - carrying our wares to distributors and buyers. And that is when the game afoot more often than not reveals itself as worthy or not. The internet has NOT made life any easier - just more hopeful. TRYING to be an artist is a waste of time. WE are one when the world says we are. And just being a painter and sketcher and sculptor is enough hard work for anyone. (Most of us should just keep our day jobs and scrap the myths these videos promote.)
This is NOT what solve the problem to survive and make money with our Art. It is 45 years I tried to sell something and nobody wants to pay because they think we do it for fun! People can sell the crafting but not the Artist Soul works. I am a good and diverse artist when I say I will sell for a price, they want the thing for free... The only thing I would do are the prints, and keep the original unless somebody is prepared to pay good money. You sound easy.. there is no easy when you are an artist unless you are already rich !!

I used to have a page for my art on Facebook but my FB account was hacked with pornographic images. It got bad when someone got a message from me and filed a complaint with HR at the place I work. That almost cost me my job and scared me off FB
Which ones lol. I haven't had amazing luck... but I suppose it's at least been on an overall upward trajectory. Been at it close to four months, too, which, I've given myself a target date of at least six months before I start worrying too much over not generating business. But it's been overall good, like I said :)
Crazy- in the comments everyone has an "opinion" of what they do instead of what the guy is saying... and non of the people in the comments who have shared the terrible advice has made any money from their artwork! Stop sharing bad advice! If you are not living off of the money you make as an artist ONLY then you definitely should have no advice to share. Stop spreading incorrect information and your opinion about what others should be doing and your not successful! Thats like having a recipe for food NO ONE WANTS TO COOK OR EAT- stop sharing it! its nasty! you dont sell prints, blah blah, you dont do this, you will never do that- ok great! Then stop complaining your broke and no one wants to pay for your art etc! But for the actual artists and business people who want to actually quit their 9-5 and be proud to sell and have their art in clients homes- Yes this is great advice to follow to allow you that freedom to create and make a living from your own work. Had a lot of real success on Facebook - years ago when you could post there. But after spending a ton of money to build my audience (and it was worth it because I was selling) FB decided I shouldn't be allowed to talk to that audience unless I paid them MORE money. Considering that FB posts are only "live" for a few hours at best, the money you have to spend to reach your entire audience is just not worth it...so 6,000 followers just sit there and no way to reach them. FB is now the biggest rip off you could imagine. Ebay did something like this more than a few years ago - I was starting to get some serious traction there and then they instituted a policy where, in order to be seen, you had to buy a $30 listing. Needless to say all the Chinese sweat shop work somehow would get to the top of those $30 listings and then sell their pieces for a mere $10. How they made money like this I don't know unless the fee structure for them was different. It totally killed off any business I had there. So social media can be great but once again - they will find a way to screw you over.
I really hate the way we constantly have to keep chasing the latest social media fad. It's a lot of work to set that stuff up! Then they change the format and the people move on to the next annoying platform, forcing anyone with a business to adapt over and over. Ugh.

I am a collector. Two years ago I went to an art exhibition in Bangkok. The exhibition featured three young artist ladies from Thailand. I looked at all the pictures displayed, took some photos and tried to get the attention of the young ladies. In vain. I guess I was not really their type of guy, considering an age difference of some decades in addition to sporting no tattoos and piercings - as they did. Finally I left, slightly frustrated. And of course without buying. So what do YOU learn from this? Suppose the door of your studio opens and in limps Quasimodo the hunchback...

Never once did I suggest not putting in the work. I worked my ass off for over 8 years before successfully exiting dna11/canvaspop this year. PUT IN THE WORK!

I would say that entirely depends on how you define "a living" I've got a well paid job and enjoy a decent standard of living but my job bores the shit out of me. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to quit and make just enough from my painting to pay my bills and put food on the table. What do we really need from life other than to enjoy the finite amount of time we have, life is too short to wonder what if.

Possibly one of the only suggestions made in the video which does make sense. Most artworks (not art) today is priced much above what most people are willing to pay - and as most people are not stupid, maybe it's time to look at ourselves ion the mirror. When artworks are not worth the asking price, they more often than not don't sell. A dollar value on a price tag is only that. It doesn't mean the work is worth the price indicated.
Depends on how much time you spent on that painting I could see prints being a way of making money, otherwise how is even two grand enough for a weeks worth of time on a painting I make that in one day on a weekend if not more for 10 hrs of my time on my job.
Bernard Poulin I agree there has to be another formula in the game. Any galleries I go into has the larger paintings for around 2 grand and they are all nice forest paintings from local artists were I live. Perhaps it's the subject that can make one stand out, cause they are all quite generic I find, but very good .

You're talking like its a pitch for a bunch of small business start up owners mate and art is a practice not a business.. its one of the few practices where the rewards are rarely seen in a monetary form but are rather more philosophical in nature.. Hi Billie- thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts. I'm an art collector too. I've bought original art pieces from Warhol, Hirst, but also from dozens of unknown artists. I've sold literally 10s of millions of dollars worth of art prints too. Not sure what qualifies knowing about "artists", but I've worked with hundreds of them and helped and supported them too.
Oh by the way, art is only for the MILLIONAIRES!!! That mean, that those millionaire people will buy art only to those who are in their social circle!!! Dont try this shit guys, just get a real job and make art just for fun, and if you are lucky, you can probably can be famous when you are dead!!! you are wrong. There is a ton of diverse artist : painter, illustrator, graphic designer, colorist, concept designer etc... Art is a Job period I don't understand why most of people think art is for fun only. Making art is a skill that not anyone possess and the artist should get paid decent amount and heck huge money for what they are putting out there Would you say to a singer don't expect to be paid because you are just singing? A writer because you are just writing? An architect because you are just drawing houses? Artists will sell to all kinds of markets, not just to the best collectors because simple those audiences exist and can become collectors too! All markets are oversaturated and all markets are challenging in their own way. What you call mediocre is nothing but the balance that has to exist for us to be able to claim something is great art. In other words great art could not be valued as great, if we do not have the undeveloped artworks made by artists that are not yet well stablished. If you erase childhood, you can't get to maturity! We all need to be mediocre first before we can be like Mozart and so did he!

Actually, mugs and mousepads earn money. Art licensing gets me a check every quarter, and your art gets 'rented', then reused. Work smart, not hard.

wow this was so useful, heard it all the way through and a few of these were things i dont usually consider, i tend to be very self concious when trying to be confident cause i do not want to come out as cocky or arrogant, so its a bit dificult showing my work off to the world
LugeTolli same. I've tried some of these ideas and still selling less than other local "artists" who slap some scrap booking paper and copper wire onto a canvas for $200. Makes me literally nauseous. You need to be able to push/sell yourself. I can't. I detest marketing. I'm a very good artist, most people still ask if I can 'just' do something for free. If only they would 'just' pay me what it's actually worth!

Yes visual art should progress to future, break these old-fashioned myths.. Selling art only through galleries, gotta depend on art dealers to get assessed for my arts works, trying to keep only 1 copy to maintain value of it.. felt weird gap between fast changing reality/techs/cultures and these perceptions of fine arts rotten-in-the-past since was in an art school... so was even glad that art galleries and offline art scenes got depressed bcus of Corona virus. what is important is that they are not realizing that they themselves are full of NEGATIVE ENERGY and they are so full that they are leaving the stains everywhere they go such as posting negative comments on youtube.
However, Few things missing from this list are ARTIST'S NETWORK and SERENDIPITY! Artistic network means being part of a fraternity helps a WHOLE LOT! and serendipity means that going an unexpected route can sometimes prove fruitful.

Because comments are negative does not mean people are not succeeding. Success is a day to day process - not an end product. And sometimes when we look at videos which purport to be "solutions" for difficult times those videos are NOT solutions not=r are they practical in the real world. They are more often than not hype to motivate the unmotivated or the unsure or the anxious - And in my book that's called "taking advantage of". It is always buyer beware - especially on line. Just because our youtube videos are super spiffy does not make them good. I would say that near 90% of videos online are not worth the time spent to listen to them. There are many writers to day calling themselves author not because they are any good but because independent publishing (rightly) allows both the good and the bad to appear spontaneously. It's always been up to the market to decide what is or is not worthy of their hard earned cash. And working hard at being the best we can be is still the only solution to getting anywhere - despite these "informative" videos. And whether we like it or not - the process has always been and forever will be a slow one - and never sure. C"est la vie.

Originality isn't key. Being new to a set of people is good, but the key is to be unoriginal in theme. The same basic sentiments sell over and over because we're still the same creatures. Sell what humans care about. You can't sell us what we don't.

With DA, from I’ve noticed is that you need to either be an already established artist or draw really shit anime to be somewhat relevant.

this guy is just telling people how to make money off of the art industry without putting in the work....it cheapens it.....the same thing happened with tattoos 10 years ago...a boom happened for shitty to mediocre tattoo artists to start marketing online and opening shops and finding ways to make money.....all it did was oversaturate the market and drive the prices down to where real artists could barely make a living....
This is not true at all. It may be true that that's the perception people have on Deviantart, but it reality has been the home for some of the greatest contemporary artists right now on the internet that have done this for over 6 years. I even got my first big clients in there. And they just revamped their design. Deviantart is awesome.

Just paint really good paintings and enjoy it. I'm farley new to painting but I know this about things if they are attractive and good it will sell, just like movies for instance. What I have noticed about local artist were I am from, so far in the few galleries I have been in it seems as if they are onley putting out safe paintings of the same boring stuff like the forest or grain elevators, I mean speaking for my self I find that a bit repetitive and boring it's as if everyone is in a wheat field painting contest or something.
Where I live it's all mountain scenes and bears and eagles.
So damned sick of the word "brand". Yes, art is a commodity and always has been going back to ancient Egypt, but it's also a means of expression much more than a means of production. Selling work is about making the right connections with individuals, it's not a corporate strategy. It's tragic that if you ask 100 art student who Caravaggio or Frans Hals or Goya or John Millet or Edouard Vuillard was, i'd guess maybe 10-15% would know of them. If you ask the same about Warhol (an artist I deeply admire as a social critic with deadpan wit more than anything else) you'll get a 100 out of a 100 with maybe a quarter of those who can tell his story in detail. Such is life in the new dark ages.

Problem with Etsy now is, if you live with another artist and THEY have Etsy, Etsy will notice more than one account using the IP and will remove one or both accounts.

I haven't either but what I do now is use the website just to show off my works and then later market myself to potential clients who viewed my site. It's also a great way to start conversations if you could load it to your cell phone.
Update: Facebook allows you to make an art page you can market to as many people and friends you want to. Then ask each one what is their favorite type of art. This can lead to a sale.

So many sites to sell artwork does not mean anything sells. As in the "real" world, few actually do sell where many less make it. If you can't make it in a "brick and mortar" gallery or with an agent don't expect miracles online. Buyers are just (if not more) picky online as they are in "real life". In the studio we may work at being be painters and sculptors and sketchers. And we may even play artsy games at being an artist. BUT. Once we step outside our studios. . . we become business people - carrying our wares to distributors and buyers. And that is when the game afoot more often than not reveals itself as worthy or not. The internet has NOT made life any easier - just more hopeful. TRYING to be an artist is a waste of time. WE are one when the world says we are. And just being a painter and sketcher and sculptor is enough hard work for anyone. (Most of us should just keep our day jobs and scrap the myths these videos promote.)
This is NOT what solve the problem to survive and make money with our Art. It is 45 years I tried to sell something and nobody wants to pay because they think we do it for fun! People can sell the crafting but not the Artist Soul works. I am a good and diverse artist when I say I will sell for a price, they want the thing for free... The only thing I would do are the prints, and keep the original unless somebody is prepared to pay good money. You sound easy.. there is no easy when you are an artist unless you are already rich !!

Had a lot of real success on Facebook - years ago when you could post there. But after spending a ton of money to build my audience (and it was worth it because I was selling) FB decided I shouldn't be allowed to talk to that audience unless I paid them MORE money. Considering that FB posts are only "live" for a few hours at best, the money you have to spend to reach your entire audience is just not worth it...so 6,000 followers just sit there and no way to reach them. FB is now the biggest rip off you could imagine.
Ebay did something like this more than a few years ago - I was starting to get some serious traction there and then they instituted a policy where, in order to be seen, you had to buy a $30 listing. Needless to say all the Chinese sweat shop work somehow would get to the top of those $30 listings and then sell their pieces for a mere $10. How they made money like this I don't know unless the fee structure for them was different. It totally killed off any business I had there.
So social media can be great but once again - they will find a way to screw you over.
I really hate the way we constantly have to keep chasing the latest social media fad. It's a lot of work to set that stuff up! Then they change the format and the people move on to the next annoying platform, forcing anyone with a business to adapt over and over. Ugh.

I am a collector. Two years ago I went to an art exhibition in Bangkok. The exhibition featured three young artist ladies from Thailand. I looked at all the pictures displayed, took some photos and tried to get the attention of the young ladies. In vain. I guess I was not really their type of guy, considering an age difference of some decades in addition to sporting no tattoos and piercings - as they did. Finally I left, slightly frustrated. And of course without buying. So what do YOU learn from this? Suppose the door of your studio opens and in limps Quasimodo the hunchback...

I would say that entirely depends on how you define "a living" I've got a well paid job and enjoy a decent standard of living but my job bores the shit out of me. Nothing would make me happier than to be able to quit and make just enough from my painting to pay my bills and put food on the table. What do we really need from life other than to enjoy the finite amount of time we have, life is too short to wonder what if.

Possibly one of the only suggestions made in the video which does make sense. Most artworks (not art) today is priced much above what most people are willing to pay - and as most people are not stupid, maybe it's time to look at ourselves ion the mirror. When artworks are not worth the asking price, they more often than not don't sell. A dollar value on a price tag is only that. It doesn't mean the work is worth the price indicated.
Depends on how much time you spent on that painting I could see prints being a way of making money, otherwise how is even two grand enough for a weeks worth of time on a painting I make that in one day on a weekend if not more for 10 hrs of my time on my job.
Bernard Poulin I agree there has to be another formula in the game. Any galleries I go into has the larger paintings for around 2 grand and they are all nice forest paintings from local artists were I live. Perhaps it's the subject that can make one stand out, cause they are all quite generic I find, but very good .
If things are generic, it's because whatever that thing is appeals to people so strongly there's a wide market for it.

Hi Billie- thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts. I'm an art collector too. I've bought original art pieces from Warhol, Hirst, but also from dozens of unknown artists. I've sold literally 10s of millions of dollars worth of art prints too. Not sure what qualifies knowing about "artists", but I've worked with hundreds of them and helped and supported them too.
