  • This is my first impressions of this medium, I’ve been wanting to try gouache for the longest time! It has the most interesting mat finish when it’s dried and I’m blown away at how it moves on the paper. As a (primarily) watercolour artist I appreciate having the ability to cover up mistakes, this paint seems to have a lot to offer in the ways of technique and I can’t wait to explore it more.
the paints im using in this are artist loft brand.

Love the video! Now, as someone who has a HIMI equivalent of this jelly gouache, I can say that unsealing the wrappers are terrible in any brand, it's not exclusive to artists loft. This brand, unfortunately, has a worse quality than HIMI, because HIMI, despite being student quality, was made as quick tool for chinese students for their entrance exam (?) paintings in art academies.
I just finished watching the video (i posted the first paragraph as i was watching the video, haha) and I am glad that you like the paint, despite the limitations of the brand!

Oh my, so that’s a good heads up for anyone looking to get any brand of jelly gouache! Cause that that was torture opening them. And I love the background information of why Himi Came about!
I’ve painted about 5 more paintings with this gouache and ya it’s for sure student grade, I’ve been letting my kids use it lots. I’ve found that it works well as dried gouache on a palette used more like watercolour AND paper makes a massive difference, I tried mixed media, pulp watercolour and cotton, of course the cotton made this paint way easier to use.
I think my final thoughts are that this paint should be used by highschoolers whose parents don’t want to break the bank but still give them something that is usable. I may make a third video with closing thoughts of this brand.
And Thanks so much for your comment!

thanks for the subscribe! i got these on sale at a Micheals (craft store in Canada) they seem to be like the Himi Jelly Gouache wich runs about 37$ cad on amazon. so far i like them for how they re wet. i used to use acrylic paint but never got into it because i wrecked my brushes due to neglect lol. if i didnt have such a problem washing brushes i would do oil or acrylic.

Instead of making it look just the the himi set, they had a chance to do it better (the packaging), and they chose to give us nothing! 😂 thanks for the video. It was very informative ❤

I’m sure they wanted to cut into the himi hype with the copy. I’ll admit I got it cause of the resemblance (but also cause it’s a cheap introduction to the medium) I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

I find the Artist Loft brand pretty questionable in general. Even looking at this video the quality seems again subpar versus the Himi set.

its for sure student grade. its a great cheap option for anyone with kids who blow through materials fast. ive made a few paintings so far with it, on good cotton paper and it does well enough. ill be upgrading with fewer colours and higher quality paint once this set is empty.
