Actual difference. Rock: overdrive/clean tone and drums are mostly heard in the lyrics part than the guitar, sound like a slower tempo and a little soothing but get a little faster and overdrive/clean tone used in power chords on hard rock, and mostly focuses on the vocals rather than the instrument, and drums as their main instrument. Metal: distortion tone, chugging/palm muting, sounds like a faster tempo and more upbeat, shredding/solos are common, has more rhythms, and mostly focuses on the instruments rather than the vocals, and the guitar as their main instrument, and are more commonly confused with punk rock and grunge because of the similar rhythmic power chords.
yes, the more defintive difference is in the guitars and drums distrortion, hard rock sounds hard while metal guitar sound "artificial", either heavy "dark" distorted like slip knot or melodic distorted that sounds kinda virtuous at times, still it sounds a bit unnatural for e guitars and thats what metal is
The vocals is not how you find the difference between those two genre it's the instruments or just the music, so if I scream a pop song but keep the music would you call it metal?
Yeah, and being realistic I think it is safe to say that between 50% and 60% of all existing metal songs don't even use too harsh vocals at all. The screams, growls, shrieks, etc are only like 40%, maybe even lower, and mostly in the death, black, and grind genres. I think most metal subgenre's can be safely played with clean or falsetto vocals, for thrash probably raspy distortion, and then death, black, and all the grind genres just the harsh vocals.

both styles evolved on two separate branches. Metal is from Blues and psychedelic Rock. Hard Rock came from Rock, Garage Rock and Rock'n Roll. While Hard Rock has mature sound and raspy vocals, Metal is simplified in the guitar rhythm but guitars are psychedelic, drums sound is thick and vocals are yelling.
No is not the same. For me rock, 80s metal, power meta, l symphonic metal, are more musical with vocal understanding. But Trash metal Deatth metal are more for projecting their aggressive brutal musical mesage. Deatth metal vocal is disgusting no one understands what they say. This 2 genre or styles of metal are not to friendly for many people.

For me everything was good till trash metal black metal and de the worst genre appears the Death metal changes everything in rock music history more violent brutal and dark. as my understanding this level is because how people is turning themselves in modern society. But that's why many classic bands and 80s bands get together again to play because of the that. Where is the good melodic music? I'm a 80s rocker man and I don't agree with black metal or death metal. that is to disturbing and noisy genre of music. 🎸🎵🎶🤔😏🙂🇺🇸👍

Hard Rock is typically Pentatonic & Blues based while Metal is more Natural Minor & Classical Based. 😎🎸🎶
