Mustaine was briefly sober during the rust in peace time, and Ellefson had completely kicked by then. neither menza nor friedman were junkies. i used to have to argue with people that Rust in peace was their best work. somehow people really used to argue for Youthanasia. these days Rust is known as an unrelenting masterpiece though.
@@laurenzgraffilpenstein8117 I will admit I might be biased since Def Leppard is my favorite rock band but they should not be on this and should have been on their other rock lists.
Actually, Sabbath's debut was the first metal album, but it didn't include the first metal songs. There were metal songs before there were metal albums or bands. The creation of metal is attributed to the band Bitter Creek with their song "Plastic Thunder" released in 1967.
Pantera in their "Diamond Darrell" days before Phil joined (and even a bit after) were laughably LA scene... watch the video where they get out of the VW Bug. High & Dry for it's time was solid, a classic album. Now if you ask me to rate Cowboys from Hell against Adrenalize... well duh no contest, but DL chose to go pop so whatever. Anyway, for the usually lame WatchMojo it's a pretty solid list. Don't forget these albums span almost 20 years and sounds change. I would say HnD was closer to "real" original heavy metal than GNR ever was. BTW RJD got an honorable mention but Rainbow should have been on the list in the first place. Rock on!
@pantera owns Spelling Def LEPPARD incorrectly ............ARE YOU SERIOUS ? hehe now... here we go again.. right ? i don't know how many fucking times i've been in this cycle so, i'll just post all my comment now, ok and i'll post yours as well so we don't need to through a bitch session you are now probably going to say "Martin, you're being a spelling nazi" i'm then going to say to you "you should fucking know the name of the band and how to spell it correctly" You'll then get upset you'll then tell me to calm down i'll tell you that i am calm you won't believe me so you'll tell me to calm down again then, just when everything settles some other dickhead from the comments section will come in and say "Martin calm down" hehe and the cycle continues MATE, TRUST ME THIS IS JUST A LOT EASIER IF YOU SIMPLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO SPELL THE NAME OF THE BAND CORRECTLY oh, and you understand - I am not triggered - I am chill - I am Calm and all that sort of stuff Def Leppard is a band that has been around forever, you should know how to spell their name oh... yeah you might also say you are not from an english background IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE if you know enough to know the band , you should know how to spell their name there' sno excuse
Yes. Their album High N Dry was a phenomenal rock album. It was the greatest rock album in that moment in time. This was also during the time before Mtv got their hooks into Def Leppard and before there was any Speed Metal, Thrash or Hair Metal tags (Glam Rock was around since the New York Dolls btw). So we're talking about a time BEFORE Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Exodus & Anthrax. This is when the heaviest bands were Black Sabbath (with R.J.Dio), Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Scorpions, UFO & MSG.
I don't disagree, I'm a fan of both. As for singers, no one compares to Dio. He could sing a menu and make it sound good. But, as for important, DL popularized British "metal" during MTV. This is what I think they were going for.
A lot of things wrong with this: 1. They included the most well known or popular albums instead of the ones that actually helped progress and evolve the metal genre. For example, they chose British Steel instead of Sad Wings of Destiny or Sin After Sin that defined the elements of heavy metal 2.Def Leppard 3. Slayer didn't help define speed metal, it already existed, they did however define Extreme metal 4. Rust in Peace obviously isn't Megadeth's most underappreciated album 5. Cliff Burton wasn't a guitarist goddammit 6. While Master of Puppets is an undoubted masterpiece, Ride the Lightning was more unexpected and dynamic and it deserved the spot That's all folks
As for the placement of albums on the list. that's up too the fans, watchmojo just makes the polls and hosts the results. And no matter how much you want to deny it. Def Leppard is metal and the list said most important, not necessarily the best. Def Leopard were the progenitors of late 80's Glam metal. They were very important to the metal scene of the time.
+Michael T (TriggerManX97) i'm not gonna deny that Def leppard were influential for many metal artists but as far as being in the list is far fetched. Perhaps an honourable mention
Black Sabbath didn't "invent" metal. Yes, they were highly influential, but there already was bands like Sir Lord Baltimore, Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly and Blue Cheer playing heavy as fuck.
+Daniel Ortiz Also half of the bands in the list are NOT "heavy" metal. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying they're not metal, but definitely not 'heavy'
Snoop Doge rust in peace wasn't that popular when it was first released, that might be what they're eluding to but still, I'm with you every megadeth fan loves that album haha
"This album proves you don't need drugs to push out a heavy metal masterpiece." ... Mustaine was high off his ass on cocaine while writing Rust in Peace lol
+Alec Tucker There is a somewhat famous story that he showed up to the Hangar 18 video shoot so out of it that he couldn't sing and play at the same time, so some creative filming had to happen
That is sad because that guy is a legend HIS BASS PLAYING IS AMAZING when I didn’t even know who Metallica was 5 years ago I still knew who Cliff Burton was.
Cliff wasn't a guitarist he was a bassist and they didn't even show cliff once even though there are tons of footage of him playing master of puppets songs. On top of that he wrote most of the stuff. Disrespectful mojo.
And iron maiden talks about a literal iron maiden (aka a big iron coffin shaped like a woman with spikes all along the inside used to torture people) and even though i'm not 100% sure i've heard that black sabbath talks about a literal black sabbath aka a black mass (not sure though because i don't know the lyrics).
The implement you describe never existed, other than as fake examples for decorating stately homes and appearing in horror films, and even if it did, a 'literal' iron maiden would be a virgin made of iron.
+Illuminator This comment deserves a million thumbs up. But there's also a high percentage of fucktards saying "omg how could you not include *random band that had no impact ever but I like a lot and it's cool to mention because they're kinda underground and stuff*??"
+masterpbk you missed the very small percentage of us that are actually able to tell the different genres apart and know that 50% of the bands mentioned either belongs to other sub genres of metal and in a single case is labeled as hard rock.

Slipknot self titled is definitely arguable, but imo its worthy of the list, not high on the list because I can recognize that there are way more influential albums out there, but it is still a classic
have a listen to their first 3 records. Mainly NWOBHM with a hint of pop/rock. Anything Rick Savage wrote was metal, have a listen to no no no, stagefright, or another hit and run.
They used to be a Heavy Metal band just like Iron Maiden however they turn into a Glam metal/Hard Rock band (the one that let other Glam Metal bands being successful)!!!
Eleni Tsou You are right and I SOOO disagree with that lol. I have them filed in my "Hard Rock" section :) My other pet peeve is when People call AC/DC metal! That one drives me crazy too.
Eleni Tsou I know. It is almost like anything played with an electric/distorted guitar is "metal". I think that is why Heavy Metal has never really gotten it's due and respect in the world of music. Especially when you look at places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only real metal band in there is AC/DC. The older, 60's farts who only think The Beatles and Joni Mitchel (whom I like both lol) don't know how nor have they tried to actual understand and get into the world of heavy metal. It is so foreign to them that they lump it all together where in their minds there is really no difference between Nelson or Overkill lol. If the Hall Of Fame is suppose to be about influence in music history how can they not have a Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or Scorpions in there? ...because for them if it ain't hippie and ain't dam skippie! (Did I really just type that lol) Heck, look how long it took them to get Kiss, Deep Purple, and Alice Cooper In. That alone should tell us that it will be decades if Metal ever will get a fair shot. IMO>
mrhoffame you're right..metal bands are so underrated especially today, and don't forget all the stereotypes and false beliefs around metal music. I don't really think metal will ever be appreciated by people who know nothing about it
was sober for a bit during Rust in peace before relapsing. i thought it was a nice shout out to a mustaine quote anyway, whereas he learned from Gar and Poland that you had to do heroine to be really great.
Probably because they influenced metal, you don’t have to be a metal band to influence another, for example Lemmy was heavily influenced by early rock and roll.
It's shameful that Judas Priest are placed so low on this list. They may have been the first band to actually *identify* as metal (unlike Deep Purple, Led Zep, Sabbath, AC/DC or the Scorpions) and they gave us so many of the genre's key sonic and visual hallmarks.
Only Sabbath is qualified as metal. Like, c'mon, they're the first to coined the term "metal". It has everything; the heaviness, the occult, dark subjects, apocalyptic riffs, attack drumming, and extended instrumentation. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is also the heaviest band in the mid-70s era with Rising.
@@leandrodasilvaborges1768 A Light in the Black gave birth to lot of power metal bands, and also Iron Maiden. Do You Close Your Eyes is the only song that I'd say straight up hard rock.

TheNewyorkdragon Glam and Hair Metal are the same thing so the fact that you didn't know that shows me you don't know what you're talking about. Def Leppard was considered Metal back when they were super radio popular but the standards for Metal got upped as the years went by and now they are Hard Rock. The Def Leppard the list talked about was the old Def Leppard considered heavy metal.
Bass guitar is an incorrect term. Acceptable terms are 'bass' or 'electric bass' thus making 'bassist' the correct term for someone who plays the instrument. This argument can go on forever since stubbornness and stupidity are best buds, but speaking as a bassist, I do not consider myself a guitarist.
@@tarman2752 I love "Arise", that record was one of the last Thrash masterpieces of the "classic" era of that subgenre, but liking or not "Chaos A.D." or "Roots" nobody can deny that they were something new, huge and largely influential for their time. That's the difference.
"From Phil Anselmo's gut wrenching vocals, to Dimebag's insane guitar work". How about Rex Brown's ground breaking bass playing and Vinnie's world class drumming ?
When did anyone overlook "Rust in Peace"? This album is a masterpiece with a few of Megadeth's finest songs (Holy Wars, Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls). And I think that I am not the only one who thinks of this album as a masterpiece.

@Joshua Aguilar Metallica call themselves Heavy Metal. Nowadays there is more subgenres, it´s like people calling Black Sabbath Doom Metal. Heavy Metal was what it was int the start and what it always will be. You can´t really re-label things
i think that the best and important album from Judas Priest is Sad wings of destiny because create the tradicional heavy metal (maiden, dio). Also British steel is very overrated
Speed Metal was a term before Thrash Metal. No one knew what to call whatever Metallica or what Slayer were playing it but it was fast so hence the term Speed Metal
+IAintGivinOutMyRealNameOn RUclips "single handedly" I think not. Their cry baby friends Soundgarden, Alice n Chains, and Pearl Jam had a lot to do with it too.
+applemaggot dude, soundgarden was pretty freaking heavy on their first three or four albums, way out of place with AiC, pj and nirvana. I'd put them in the sludge/stoner metal/stoner rock category, more in line with the melvins unless you look solely at their last few, more poppy sounding albums. plus, without the melvins, you wouldn't have either whiny-ass nirvana nor sludge metal like eyehategod, crowbar, mastodon or today is the day, to name a few.
Now seriously: Who listens to Metal and was ever like "Uh, I could really go for some Def Leppard! That's some hardcore Metal!!"... ?! Now, please write it down for future reference, WatchMojo: Def Leppard is not a Metal band: they play Hard Rock. And therefore: No, they didn't release any important "Metal albums" ... I mean, I could understand Van Halen, but Def Leppard? Come on! Next: Iron Maiden higher than Priest? Please, look up the timeline of Heavy Metal, and you'll see that Priest had a higher influence on Metal. As well as the look, just check out how Death or Black Metal fans dress, and you'll see what I mean... although I think it's still funny that the clothing style comes straight out of the dark rooms and porn shops of the gay hardcore scene, as Rob Halford, being gay himself, heavily borrowed from that look:) But hey: It works;) And lastly: Master of Puppets might be the best album of Metallica (by most critics at least), but Kill 'em All was by far more influential! Just think about Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, etc... and after all, this Top 10 is about the "most important albums" albums, not the "best albums". You could also say Importance = Influence, and that is mostly a question of when the album came out and how it was received then, not now! The only thing probably everybody can agree on is Black Sabbath, but hey: That's a dead giveway, if you'd root for any other album for Nr. 1, you really didn't pay attention to the history of Heavy Metal (or you're Gene Simmons and think you've created everything in music that has a guitar riff in it, plus the Devil's Horns;) PS: An honorable mention for "S.O.D. - Speak English or Die" would have been nice as one of the most important Crossover/Hardcore albums... as well one of the most metal albums of all time and in general! Seargent D./March of the S.O.D. still has one of the best riffs in Metal history! Plus, the lyrics are hilarious if you're not easily offended ;)

Although you're right, "back then" is not now, and "now", Def Leppard are considered a hard rock band. Again: nothing against Def Leppard, great band! Just not a "Heavy Metal" band...
MrNodebate I personally can't stand Def Leppard. I had Pyromania when I was 13, but by Hysteria they were had completely watered themselves down to a ballad band. And it doesn't really matter what era it is, you can't rewrite history. What was NWOBHM still applies, that's why genres, and sub genres exist. Those early albums would fall under classic metal. I wouldn't consider anything they did after Pyromania metal though. It just annoys me that everyone wants to rewrite metal history, and change it's roots. It's like saying that Dolly Parton was never county because country has changed and is now Taylor Swift. Or that the Dead Kennedys were never punk, because Green Day is now considered punk.
A lot of youngsters on here who do not know what they are talking about. 1977 -1984 Def Leppard was Heavy Metal. They helped create NWOBHM from which we got thrash, death, black and power metal. They toured with Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Judas Priest. 1983-1987 Pantera was glam. They wore make-up, teased their hair, wore spandex, the whole nine yards. They toured with Stryper, Dokken and the like. Obviously things changed. Doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Love or hate Anthrax (like Watchmojo seems to) saying they didn't have influence on the Thrash or metal scene in general is asinine and ignorant. But then again, not like this is top tier lists we are ever dealing with lol.
Tachanka yeah, Ozzy's album was more hard rock and the first 2 Def Lep albums are NWOBHM. You don't have to like it but that's how it is. And to wobbledrag: Anthrax? Are you kidding? First off, this video here was about albums, and "I'm the Man" was released as a 12" vinyl EP and the song was just featured there. I have this piece of crap music in my record collection. Also compared to Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer Anthrax were always the softer ones until the second half of the 90s. Also how often have you ever heard or read about somebody saying he was being influenced by Anthrax? Hahaha. Also this band always had the lowest number of album sales compared to the other 3.
Lee Torry no actually, most metalheads would be pissed off about that phrase yes, but you must understand, they were talking about metal as a whole, not one specific location’s sub genre scene. If they were talking about a specific thing then it fits, but since the whole genre is worldwide and has many sub genres, it just doesn’t add up

+MatthewsGauss Problem is, this video series is produced in the USA. It would be far different if it had been made in Europe or by a European. And yes, nowhere close to enough attention given to those amazing genres. But then... it's better that way. It allows the true fans of extreme metal to find their own path to chaos. And that's half the fun of the metal brother- and sisterhood, no?

@@@daredonny22 I think the same, personally I would pick Holy Diver over Def Leppard, Ozzy and Judas Priest, (which I prefer Painkiller), and maybe Ace of Spades, but these are only personal opinions. At the same time I understand that there are so many masterpiece in heavy metal history that every list will be difficult. A top 10 list for every subgenre will be great, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be easy anyway XD Scream Bloody Gore was important for almost every death metal band that came out few years later, from Morbid Angel to Cannibal Corpse, Obituary , Suffocation, .... but The Sound of Perseverance, even if Atheist came out almost ten years before, was really important for the evolution of Technical Death, and even now just listen some blast beats of Kollias, you can really hear the influence of SOP
Anndgrim Lemmy said they are a Rock 'n' Roll band. - and he said this more than just once. Or do you want to tell Mr. Kilmister, if he would still be among us, that he is telling bullshit about his own band? A lot of the albums here a discussable. Not alone because of their maybe influence but also for being "Heavy Metal" in general. The only thing that could be classified as "Heavy Metal" when we are talking about Motörhead is their sound. Because it blows your ears off. The lyrics? No. Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll-worship or Fuck Off-songs are not something Heavy Metal exclusive. The riffs? Questionable. But this whole list is something weird because what-the-fuck is Heavy Metal? (This is somekind of rhetorical question) Yeah, you can say this riff and that riff and fast riffs and whatever. But you name ten HM bands and I will tell you why it's hardly HM (probably) and vice versa. But Motörhead will only Rock 'n' Roll. Forever. And it's good this way.
Bjaerke And heavy metal is a subgenre of rock despite what some idiots might say. The affiliation between what is considered early heavy metal and 60s psychedelic rock is easy to see. Black Sabbath in particular, and Black Sabbath directly inspired not only bands but entire metal subgenres. So yes, Motörhead did make rock music, and metal is a rock genre. But if Black Sabbath is defined as metal, and it is, given the fact that Black Sabbath pretty much is what defines metal, then Motörhead also is.
Anndgrim And Rock is a subgenre of what? If we argue that way every modern guitar-bass-drum based music is just a subgenre of whatever. Bathory also not only inspired bands but also "created" a new genre (or new genres). With "Hammerheart" they (or he, because Bathory was mainly only Quorthon) created "Viking Metal" and with their first three albums Bathory was a huge impact on what later became "Black Metal". So following this argument Viking and Black Metal would also just be subgenres and nothing new would ever be able to be created. It's like to say cars are just carriots because in the beginning we had carriots pulled by horses and the horses just disappeard. If Black Sabbath is considered by others as Metal than other people can consider Motörhead also as Metal. That's okay. But I prefer to stick with what the bands themselves declare(d) to be.

"Rust In Peace is often overlooked" - No it isn't, it's Megadeth's most popular album. "You don't need drugs..." - They were famously addicts.
Alcoholics too
it’s not even megadeth best album, rust in peace only have 3 great songs the rest are just decent
Love rust in peace but countdown is my favorite
Peace Sells is their greatest album in my opinion.

*Sabbath CREATED metal.* What do you mean "changed"?
Yeah dude they only mentioned Zeppelin as the creators but not Sabbath? They both played a key role in the creation of metal.
They needed metalheads to make this list
Actually, Sabbath's debut was the first metal album, but it didn't include the first metal songs. There were metal songs before there were metal albums or bands. The creation of metal is attributed to the band Bitter Creek with their song "Plastic Thunder" released in 1967.
I think the logic behind that choice is “putting something into existence changes the thing from being nonexistent to existent”.
Black Sabbath didn't create METAL
They made it famous...
Def leopard higher on the list than pantera ? Are you serious
Rock on!
Like Def Leppard but they should not be on this list
@pantera owns

You'll then get upset
you'll then tell me to calm down
i'll tell you that i am calm
you won't believe me
so you'll tell me to calm down again
then, just when everything settles
some other dickhead from the comments section will come in and say "Martin calm down" hehe
and the cycle continues
MATE, TRUST ME
THIS IS JUST A LOT EASIER IF YOU SIMPLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO SPELL THE NAME OF THE BAND CORRECTLY
oh, and you understand
- I am not triggered
- I am chill
- I am Calm
and all that sort of stuff
Def Leppard is a band that has been around forever, you should know how to spell their name
oh... yeah
you might also say you are not from an english background
IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE
if you know enough to know the band , you should know how to spell their name
there' sno excuse
Love Pantera , But Def Leppard is a great band.
DIO Holy Diver not Def Leppard.
Yup
I'm with him
I don't disagree, I'm a fan of both. As for singers, no one compares to Dio. He could sing a menu and make it sound good. But, as for important, DL popularized British "metal" during MTV. This is what I think they were going for.
Dio We Rock for me. RIP, Ronnie James.
I argee
A lot of things wrong with this:
1. They included the most well known or popular albums instead of the ones that actually helped progress and evolve the metal genre. For example, they chose British Steel instead of Sad Wings of Destiny or Sin After Sin that defined the elements of heavy metal
2.Def Leppard
3. Slayer didn't help define speed metal, it already existed, they did however define Extreme metal
4. Rust in Peace obviously isn't Megadeth's most underappreciated album
5. Cliff Burton wasn't a guitarist goddammit
6. While Master of Puppets is an undoubted masterpiece, Ride the Lightning was more unexpected and dynamic and it deserved the spot
That's all folks
Also they say "Black Sabbath changed heavy metal like never before" when they practically invented it.
That's all folks

The implement you describe never existed, other than as fake examples for decorating stately homes and appearing in horror films, and even if it did, a 'literal' iron maiden would be a virgin made of iron.

Def Leppard is an AMAZING band and one of my long time favorites, but how the heck did you get them in a "Most Important Metal Album" list???

Eleni Tsou You are right and I SOOO disagree with that lol. I have them filed in my "Hard Rock" section :) My other pet peeve is when People call AC/DC metal! That one drives me crazy too.
mrhoffame hahaha I totally agree with you! they're definitely hard rock. people can be so ignorant :p :p
I don't really think metal will ever be appreciated by people who know nothing about it
"you dont need drugs to push out a heavy metal masterpiece".... uh Mustaine was on heroin...

Why is Guns and Def Leppard In here
Cuz they were marketed as metal back in the day. Kind of like saying hank williams isn't country because stuff like Luke Bryan is called country today
Idk I consider gnr to be hard rock. Paradise city has a heavy riff though. But idk why Def Leppard is there.
Probably because they influenced metal, you don’t have to be a metal band to influence another, for example Lemmy was heavily influenced by early rock and roll.
Guns isn’t in
Hair metal counts

When Def Leppard first started they were actually considered NWOBHM. Remember when Def Leppard released their first album in 1980 Thrash Metal, Death Metal, and all that stuff didn't exist. The heaviest stuff at that point was Motorhead. Venom wouldn't release their first album until 1981. So compared to their peers at the time Def Leppard was NWOBHM.

"Scream Bloody Gore" should have been on this list.
No
Yes
how did reign in blood contribute to speed metal? that album is thrash at its finest
I thought you said "trash"
Speed Metal was a term before Thrash Metal. No one knew what to call whatever Metallica or what Slayer were playing it but it was fast so hence the term Speed Metal
Andrew Louis
Exactly 🤘🏻
I thought you said trash I was about to flip out
Def Leppard is GLAM and GNR is hard rock. None are metal!
Def Leppard istn Glam Gay Metal is Hard Rock
Glam metal is still metal
Def Leppard's earlier albums are considered as classics of NWOBHM so no, Def Leppard is metal.
How hard is that to comprehend?
PANTERA should be #1. They single handedly saved metal in the 90s when everyone was cutting their hair and crybaby grunge was taking over.
+Sith Lord Mike Rich well the beatles did it first
+TexasSmoking Ironic then that Nirvana, "a crybaby grunge" band, single handedly saved the entire rock genre in the 90s.
Jim M I can't argue against that. Well said.
As well as the look, just check out how Death or Black Metal fans dress, and you'll see what I mean... although I think it's still funny that the clothing style comes straight out of the dark rooms and porn shops of the gay hardcore scene, as Rob Halford, being gay himself, heavily borrowed from that look:) But hey: It works;)
And lastly: Master of Puppets might be the best album of Metallica (by most critics at least), but Kill 'em All was by far more influential!
1, you really didn't pay attention to the history of Heavy Metal (or you're Gene Simmons and think you've created everything in music that has a guitar riff in it, plus the Devil's Horns;)
PS: An honorable mention for "S.O.D. - Speak English or Die" would have been nice as one of the most important Crossover/Hardcore albums... as well one of the most metal albums of all time and in general! Seargent D./March of the S.O.D. still has one of the best riffs in Metal history! Plus, the lyrics are hilarious if you're not easily offended ;)
skuyo0703 On the other hand, you're right ;)
I don't read all your comment, but yes, def leppard in this list is ridicolous
When Def Leppard first started they were actually considered NWOBHM. Remember when Def Leppard released their first album in 1980 Thrash Metal, Death Metal, and all that stuff didn't exist. The heaviest stuff at that point was Motorhead. Venom wouldn't release their first album until 1981. So compared to their peers at the time Def Leppard was NWOBHM.
100% couldn't agree more, people just dont understand that Heavy Metal and Metal are two different things
Why this is true everyone knows them as a hair metal band
rocknroll_jezus9 Sorry for being late but Heavy metal and metal are the same thing according to wikipedia. Also i consider metal as a thick high distortion guitar sound. Def Leppard didn’t have that.

God, they have absolutely no idea of what they are talking about. I don't think anyone in watchmojo even listens to heavy metal. They always fuck up when it comes to making a list related to metal (remember Lars as #3 on metal drummers list?).
"Heavy metal list"
*Puts 4 thrash metal albums and 1 hard rock album
I am surprised they haven't put Jethro Tull on one of those metal list videos.
The flute is a heavy, metal instrument...
3 out of the big 4, why does watchmojo hate Anthrax, also def leppard, lol
I'm sorry but personally anthrax is the worst out of the big 4
You are allowed to have an incorrect opinion, that aside I'm the Man was important for crossover appeal, hell even DRI crossover should have made the list above Def fucking Leppard. Love or hate Anthrax (like Watchmojo seems to) saying they didn't have influence on the Thrash or metal scene in general is asinine and ignorant. But then again, not like this is top tier lists we are ever dealing with lol.
And fuck watchmojo: Top 10 important HEAVY metal albums, puts 4 THRASH metal albums and 1 HARD ROCK album
Dazer Gameplays 2.0 reloaded Anthrax has more musicallity than Slayer 0000
Oh dear god. Did The Person That Wrote The List Seriously Say “Scene” WatchMojo, you just pissed off every Metalhead
Nigga, are you offended by the phrase "metal scene"?
Lee Torry no actually, most metalheads would be pissed off about that phrase yes, but you must understand, they were talking about metal as a whole, not one specific location’s sub genre scene. If they were talking about a specific thing then it fits, but since the whole genre is worldwide and has many sub genres, it just doesn’t add up
@@legionarydecanus9700 Nigga, are you implying that a majority of metalheads are offended by the phrase "metal scene"?
Lee Torry well you missed the point, and I’m saying that a lot of die hard metal fans, sorry if this sounds ignorant of me but, it seems like you are new to metal well at least newer

1. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
Not even a nod to groundbreakers like King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Candlemass, Scorpions, Accept, Therion, Nightwish, Dissection, Bathory or Mayhem.
Some day, you guys need to dare the leap and look outside the US/UK scene.
Sucks that nobody pays attention to black or death metal as much as they should. shit I was surprised that death even got mentioned.
Not mainstream enough.
I am 54 years old was 14 when I first heard the first Sabbath album. Still can’t stop listening to it to this day 🤟🏻
Def Leppard aren't Metal they're 80s hard rock
**glam metal (tho this list is heavy metal so def leppard still shouldnt be here)
Lothar Mallea I'm guessing you have not listened to all of high n dry because you can tell it's nwobhm
RIP AND TEAR i have. Ive also heard black sabbath...
No they re metal
i agree. but there's definitely a difference between what they were considered at the time, and what hindsight has defined them as in retrospect. it seems they formed in something of an overlap style that wasn't defined yet, and eventually settled into glam rock, power ballad, anthem, style stuff.
Black Sabbath created! Led just flirted next and then left.
LED was the root of everything. Sabbath, influenced by Led, created the purest metal.
"we gladly recognize Megadeth as not just a Metallica rip-off"

MrCapone1996 Nope. RIDE is Metallica's best 80's album. KEA, MOP, and AFJA is amazing but the work on Lightning is phenomenonal
Top 10 important metal albums.

6: Scream Bloody Gore - Death
5: Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
4: Spreading the Disease - Anthrax
3: Reign in Blood - Slayer
2: Rust in Peace - Megadeth
1: Master of Puppets - Metallica
Magic Steve worst list ever lol
How could it be improved?
Death's Symbolic needed to be on this list and in the top 5. It was far from the first death metal album, but it added an element of melody and technicality not present in metal before.
My list would be:
* Iron Maiden - Number of The Beast
* Death - Scream Bloody Gore
* Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
* At The Gates - Slaughter of The Soul
* Metallica - Master of Puppets
* Slayer - Reign in Blood
* Black Sabbath - Paranoid
* Korn - Korn
* Megadeth - Rust In Piece
* Venom - Black Metal
Honorable Mentions (Genre Defining):
* Burzum - Filosofem
* Cannibal Corpse - Butchered at Birth
* Dio - Holy Diver
* Alice in Chains - Dirt (Debatable, but I consider them heavy enough to be Metal)
* X Japan - Blue Blood
* Dissection - Storm of The Light's Bane
* System of A Down - Toxicity
* Gorguts - Obscura
* Lamb of God - Ashes of The Wake
* Tool - Lateralus
* Meshuggah - Obzen
* Faith No More - Angel Dust
Def Leppard over Judas Priest. All credibility instantly gone.
lol
"Mojo whatever" doesn't know s%€t!
Yeah, and where's Warrant??
Nothing will ever top Rust in Peace. In all music not just Heavy Metal.
"So, what's your favourite album"
"Ah... Actually, you would mistake it for a pop album, Watchmojo, so I rather not say. "
My list:
10: Hail To The King (Avenged Sevenfold)
9: Ace Of Spades (Motorhead)
8: Piece Of Mind (Iron Maiden)
7: Follow The Leader (Korn)
6: Spreading The Disease (Anthrax)
5: South Of Heaven (Slayer)
4: Ride The Lightning (Metallica)
3: Black Sails At Midnight (Alestorm)
2: Denim And Leather (Saxon)
1: Queen Of The Murder Scene (The Warning)
Judas Priest invented Heavy Metal and Iron Maiden perfected it.
Metallica's Master of Puppets is, hands down, my favorite metal album.
Philip Riggio it was the one that set them for success
Philip Riggio ride the lighting is better my opinion
Mine is Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Mine is Rust in Peace (1990 version), hands down.
Diamondhead's Lightning to the Nations, Anvil's Metal on Metal and Anthrax's Spreading the Disease should have all got at least an Honorable Mention as all three albums were groundbreaking.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Helloween - Keeper of the 7 Keys
Death - Pick One
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Mahyem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Korn - Korn
Nightwish - Oceanborn
I would pick Death - Scream Bloody Gore as it was their first one
But every Death album is perfection
@@daredonny22 Exactly, i think the first one is the most important of the entire discography. Maybe my favorite one is SOP because, from a certain point of view, Chuck has redefined Death metal at least twice in his career. But you're right, every Death album is a masterpiece!! \m/
@@tomotomocacchiocacchio3180 The Sound of Perseverance is my favorite Death album, but i find Scream Bloody Gore the most important. But TSOP was revolutionary as hell tho. It hurts that only Death album they have on this list is in honorable mentions... also i don't know why DIO is only in honorable mentions
A top 10 list for every subgenre will be great, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be easy anyway XD
Scream Bloody Gore was important for almost every death metal band that came out few years later, from Morbid Angel to Cannibal Corpse, Obituary , Suffocation, .... but The Sound of Perseverance, even if Atheist came out almost ten years before, was really important for the evolution of Technical Death, and even now just listen some blast beats of Kollias, you can really hear the influence of SOP
Love the mention of "Death"!
But i hate mention Of Slinpflow
Nice to see Def Leppard get some recognition, yes the majority of their hits aren’t heavy metal, but listen to their first 2 albums, they are metal.
Starting off the list with a band that always declared to be a Rock 'n' Roll band. Well done, Mojo, well done.
+Bjaerke A rock band that plays heavy metal music, with heavy metal themes and lyrics.
Anndgrim
Lemmy said they are a Rock 'n' Roll band.
Anndgrim
And Rock is a subgenre of what?
