Half the band came from my neighbourhood back then, including Paul Dianno. It’s all a matter of perspective and when you first heard Maiden. I’m 58 and I remember buying the first two albums when the came out. Those first two albums are still May favorite. I prefer Di’anno’s raspiness and Clive’s drumming. Not to say number of the beast , piece of mind, power slave and somewhere in time aren’t fantastic albums. They’ve had a lot of great albums. But there’s just something about the first two albums and their grittiness that will forever be the greatest for me personally.
When the statement is made, that Iron Maiden are the greatest band in the world, is not because of how many albums they have sold. It is about the fact that, if it wasn't for them, 80% of the people who are associated with this type of music, would not have anything to do with it! The amount of people they have inspired is unaccountable. The second reason why they are the best band in the world is consistency. They have remained consistent for 45 years through thick and thin. No gimmicks, no experiments of any kind in order to catch a wider audience, none of that! This is who we are, this is what we do and if you like it, you're welcome to come aboard. And at the same time, managing to always come up with something fresh (ok, not so much in recent years) but without going of the rails. As far as what was said in the documentary, I do believe that "Phantom of the Opera" is the best Maiden song ever. You pay for one track and you get seven!!!! Courtesy of the great Steve Harris! Every time I hear this song is like the first time! Unbelievable! R.I.P. Paul and Clive. We'll never forget you.
Bruce is more than capable when it comes to performing songs from the first two albums - Live After Death more than proves this. But there's something with Paul's renditions that elevate these songs to a whole different level. Bruce's intro to Phantom at Ullevi is a beautiful admission of this, yet he goes on to deliver a brilliant version himself. Rest well, Paul. 🤘
My favorite Maiden lineup with DiAnno and Clive. First two albums are by far the best. Yeah they had a lot of great albums afterwards. But the rawness and song structure on the first two albums are just undeniable.
@@jeffsimon9594 The band didn't like the production on the first and the song choices on the second, but we loved them both. Nothing to worry about, chaps!
Ofcorse here comes all the selloutica I mean Metallica fanboys saying that their so called “ thrash metal “ band is bigger when they played at the Grammys with lady Gaga 😂 Metallica had to change their sound to the mainstream they get radio play everywhere in the USA , Iron Maiden never had to change their sound they stayed more consistent true to their fans you don’t hear their music played on mainstream radios cuz they are a heavy metal band not a pop band like Metallica see the difference!?? Yet maiden has sold over 130 million albums worldwide THEY are the most successful heavy metal band !! When the time is up for both bands one is going be remembered as legends with respect and integrity ( Iron Maiden ) The other one ( Metallica ) will be remembered as a bunch of sellouts without integrity and without respect how about that . Iron Maiden is the biggest metal band without a doubt !! ✌️
RIP Paul. I've been a fan since 1980. Iron Maiden is the best metal band because they are Unpretentious. There are no Diva's in that band and that's because of Harry (Steve Harris). The other top reason is because as a fan, Iron Maiden always gave me more than my money's worth whether it was destroying the Spectrum in Philly where I'm from or their albums. The fact that they did not get much airplay is a testament to how loyal their fanbase is and it is probably the largest fanbase in the World. Their music gave us a voice. Us, as in we don't do whatever is en vogue. We make our own tracks and if you get in our way, we'll run you over...but in a Nice way. No other band has given me as much as Iron Maiden. Up The Irons!
The first time I heard of them was in '83 when I was 16. Creepy Magazine had a two page ad for the Piece of Mind album. All the guys were sitting around a big wooden table and dinner plates with brains on them like it was the middle ages. So I bought the album and it changed my life. Few days ever go by when I don't listen to at least one Maiden song. Got my Eddie tattoo in 1989 haha
I don't really get this album at all, but piece of mind and powerslave are ultimate ! Best metal album ever 1: Nightwish "Oceanborn", 2: Iron Maiden "Powerslave"
Nightwish? To me they've always sounded a bit plastic, like something you play at an ice hockey game to get the pre-teens jumping. Also, I really cannot stand Tarja's vocals. I find them emotionless and boring and very difficult to decipher. :)
@@jonstiffer4994 Tarja left Nightwish in 2005. Since then they've had 2 lead singers Annette Olzen and their present singer Floor Jansen. She has an amazing voice and can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals, screaming and death growls. I know Steve Harris loves Nightwish he said in 2020 in an interview with Ultimate Guitar " I think Nightwish are a great band and they're getting bigger all the time. They probably have the biggest chance of reaching worldwide success on a level that Maiden has".
Maiden was OUT OF THIS WORLD in the 80's... Their first 7 albums are in a league of their own, each pushing the genre further. Then, well... It went downwards. The latest albums are not even listenable for this old school fan - and boy, was I a HARDCORE fan. Can't beat Piece Of Mind / Powerslave / Live after Death/ Somewhere In Time, what a flow !
Di Anno complaining about being an Ex Iron Maiden singer, but plays Iron Maiden songs at his shows. I saw him at a very small gig at a tattoo🤩 convention years ago, he was great, but the best part of the show was the band playing wrathchild etc
I love this comment by Dennis Stratton "..if you're on tour with a heavy metal band as big as Maiden it's like you know you're listening to that all day and then you do a gig in the evening and then you go back to your hotel room and you put Motörhead on I just think that's Overkill so I I just I just love easy listening music when when you've been traveling all day playing loud music all night going absolutely potty." I dunno, Dennis, Yes it could be Overkill but 'Bomber' or 'Stay Clean' would fit the bill as well. 🙂
I love Maiden, and I have all the respect in the world for them. I am glad that them and Judas Priest and Merciful Fate are still around and healthy enough to still perform. They are the only three left from the original heavy metal bands before the sub genres started. They deserve to be respected as the legends they are. But technically, you can’t say they’re the most successful metal band. I’m not saying you have to like Metallica or like every Metallica album or anything like that but if you’re just talking about success and nothing else, Metallica is the most successful mental band. I keep hoping that before both bands retire, we will get a Metallica and Iron Maiden Tour.
Very good documentary, but PLEASE, why for the second time it's been published with the photo of Bruce Dickinson...??? He deserve to have a picture of the first line up with the UNFORGIVABLE, Paul Di Anno... R.I.P😢 Thank's to the first 2 album I fall in love with that band and (to me) the 3 Albums (with the legendary Clive Burr on drum) are UNTOUCHABLE! 🤘🤘🤘 Paul Di Anno, was vocally a "monster" of power and aggression, full of attitude..❤🤘
About ½ way through this, one guy, I can't remember his name, but he has it right on!! Music today, and record companies are all about the $$ money!!! Back in the day, it was all about the music!!!👍🏻👍🏻 put out the best music you can, and if it makes money too!? Bonus!!
@@JohnFoxton-p7j That's what I thought at first glance but he looked way older than Adrian Smith would have been at that time and looks totally different in the eyes to me.I was just curious if they had a fill in guitarist for a few shows during 1980 which that concert was dated because im not sure the exact date Adrian Smith joined but I think it was very early 1981 like Jan/Feb.
In the end Steve wanted Adrian to join the band so when he suddenly became available it was kinda days numbered for Dennis. They come up with a bunch of reasons to sack him but it was likely that they felt Adrian would be a better fit and he was already close mates with Dave Murray. They asked him when they signed to EMI but he was still trying to get Urchin off the ground and felt it was going somewhere, they were doing pretty well at the time but it fell apart within a year and they made the offer again Dennis did alright on the album and his tenure, pretty much knew he was going to be done by the end of the KISS tour so had fun with it.
Paul was just as good as Bruce, but got burnt out as did Bruce, but Paul never got the chance to recover,I like the Bruce songs, but the covers of Paul’s songs are not so good,Paul had a genuine sound, that Bruce couldn’t match, both great singers in there own right!❤ I knew Paul at school for 5 years ,the Paul I knew was a lovely bloke always happy !! 11/13 in Charlotte NC!! Saw them twice in the early 80s so I'm reliving my teen angst at almost 60 years old and I am soooo excited! I'm taking my 43 YO husband, this will be his 1st time seeing them 😂
I remember seeing Iron Maiden on the covers of a few metal magazines and telling my metallic friends," THEY LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF PUSSIES!".....I was wrong. 🥺I went to see them in 85 and have been hooked since.
I was introduced to IM when # of the beast came out…..I was highly into roots reggae and 80’s hip hop… there was no denying, IM was special! I grew up listening to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys already! Social Destortion! Fuckn hell! IM fit the bill perfectly!
This was great. As far as Steve and Paul, neither are at fault. Paul didn't really want to be THAT (what Maiden became, and he saw coming, probably way to quick), and Steve needed THAT with his vision and work ethic for the band. A bad match, but an awesome moment in the band's history! The foundation you could say. First 2 albums are just amazing and cherished among us fans. I got into Maiden via Somewhere in Time era, but when I discovered the first 2, I was blown away not just by the grit, but by Paul's punk look. He looked nothing like the open shirt, hairy chested, long hairs of the time. We got Bruce later though, he provided all of that 🤣 .....Number of the Beast was awesome though, and later albums. They're still making rock epics, listen to "Hell on Earth". I love 29:51 young Dave! The reason I own and play a Strat! Also, wouldn't be a Maiden concert ending without "Iron Maiden" or "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"! We're always sad when they stop playing, so walking out with this song makes you a bit more cheery!
Damn, rest in power and run free Paul...

First I saw 'em 1980 Supporting *KISS* ❤️ and that's the Place they belong today too: after *KISS* ❤️
Rest in Peace, Brother Paul DiAnno 😥
Just got tickets for June 28 London stadium, 50 years!! Gonna be special
Paul, Clive.... Thank you for your talent, hard work, and passion. Rest In Piece, heroes.
R.I.P. Paul Dianno.
Having read his autobiography, not a nice person, but I absolutely love his work with The Irons.
Up The Irons!
My favorite Maiden lineup with DiAnno and Clive. First two albums are by far the best. Yeah they had a lot of great albums afterwards. But the rawness and song structure on the first two albums are just undeniable.
Even the band themselves are lukewarm on 'Killers', it just mopped up the early songs not used on the debut.
@@jeffsimon9594 The band didn't like the production on the first and the song choices on the second, but we loved them both. Nothing to worry about, chaps!
@@MrMmnngghh The production & performances on 'Killers' are great, no argument there.
Ofcorse here comes all the selloutica I mean Metallica fanboys saying that their so called “ thrash metal “ band is bigger when they played at the Grammys with lady Gaga 😂 Metallica had to change their sound to the mainstream they get radio play everywhere in the USA ,
Iron Maiden never had to change their sound they stayed more consistent true to their fans you don’t hear their music played on mainstream radios cuz they are a heavy metal band not a pop band like Metallica see the difference!??
Yet maiden has sold over 130 million albums worldwide THEY are the most successful heavy metal band !! When the time is up for both bands one is going be remembered as legends with respect and integrity ( Iron Maiden )
The other one ( Metallica ) will be remembered as a bunch of sellouts without integrity and without respect how about that .
Iron Maiden is the biggest metal band without a doubt !! ✌️
Just saw them in Toronto on the 26th. Awesome show
@@jonstiffer4994 God, yes. Actually almost all metal beyond Sabbath, Maiden and Blind Guardian leaves me cold. Danzig is all right.
Nov 17 San Antonio tx. I’ll be there … never missed a maiden show in S.A. !
Good to see mal dome, knew and drank with him in soho back in the day, never tired of his tales.
RIP PAUL, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF THE ORIGIONAL METAL GODS!!! ❤
The footage at 13:29 is debatable.. The monitors are L'Acoustic 115xt , developed in 2000's
Iron Maiden. A phenomenal band.
Twilight Zone was / is and always will be my favourite Di'Anno track... R I P Paul... safe travels bro !... Blessed Be !...
Seeing them on the Run For Your Lives tour at London Stadium next June. Haven’t seen them since the Book Of Souls tour at Download 2016 in Donington.
27:47 ... he's right - that song has everything in only 7 mihutes.
Rest in peace paul di'anno
RIP Paul u will live on 4ever n ur music up the irons baby 🤘🤘🤘 one last time
Maiden was OUT OF THIS WORLD in the 80's...
Without maiden there is no Metallica
without ACDC there is no maiden
Di Anno complaining about being an Ex Iron Maiden singer, but plays Iron Maiden songs at his shows. I saw him at a very small gig at a tattoo🤩 convention years ago, he was great, but the best part of the show was the band playing wrathchild etc
Ya it's him complaining about all the millions he lost, , and he has to live with that,
@@user-bl6ne3hc6nThese comments aged horribly.
@111highgh it must of worked. You commented on it,
one of the best ever no doubt 🙌 👌 💯 👏
I love this comment by Dennis Stratton "..if you're on tour with a heavy metal band as big as Maiden it's like you know you're listening to that all day and then you do a gig in the evening and then you go back to your hotel room and you put Motörhead on I just think that's Overkill so I I just I just love easy listening music when when you've been traveling all day playing loud music all night going absolutely potty."
I dunno, Dennis, Yes it could be Overkill but 'Bomber' or 'Stay Clean' would fit the bill as well.
R.I.P😢
Thank's to the first 2 album I fall in love with that band and (to me) the 3 Albums (with the legendary Clive Burr on drum) are UNTOUCHABLE!
🤘🤘🤘
Paul Di Anno, was vocally a "monster" of power and aggression, full of attitude..❤🤘
About ½ way through this, one guy, I can't remember his name, but he has it right on!! Music today, and record companies are all about the $$ money!!! Back in the day, it was all about the music!!!👍🏻👍🏻 put out the best music you can, and if it makes money too!? Bonus!!
Who is that on guitar 4:05-4;25 from the 1980 show?
Who do you think it is ? It's a young Adrian Smith. There was also Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton who left the band.
@@ronaldclayton4232 He joined in 1980 to replace Dennis Stratton who was leaving but i think all 3 of the guitarists played together for a few shows.
Looks like Adrian with his gold top Lea Paul.
IT is Adrian Smith
LOVE that they often all have a glass of booze each in the early pics 😂
RIP Paul Di'Anno
In the end Steve wanted Adrian to join the band so when he suddenly became available it was kinda days numbered for Dennis. They come up with a bunch of reasons to sack him but it was likely that they felt Adrian would be a better fit and he was already close mates with Dave Murray. They asked him when they signed to EMI but he was still trying to get Urchin off the ground and felt it was going somewhere, they were doing pretty well at the time but it fell apart within a year and they made the offer again
Dennis did alright on the album and his tenure, pretty much knew he was going to be done by the end of the KISS tour so had fun with it.
RIP Paul DI Anno🙏🪦🙏🎸🇬🇧🫵👎👍👊🤘🤮😭
RIP Paul...
You can see from the duelling guitars why they loved the QUO so much!!
Is there a part 2?
RIP Paul. I hope your running free brother!
So sad to hear of his death!R.I.P.!!❤
Nice one, which school did you attend?

11/13 in Charlotte NC!! Saw them twice in the early 80s so I'm reliving my teen angst at almost 60 years old and I am soooo excited! I'm taking my 43 YO husband, this will be his 1st time seeing them 😂
I remember seeing Iron Maiden on the covers of a few metal magazines and telling my metallic friends," THEY LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF PUSSIES!".....I was wrong. 🥺I went to see them in 85 and have been hooked since.
Rest in pease Paul and Clive
I was introduced to IM when # of the beast came out…..I was highly into roots reggae and 80’s hip hop… there was no denying, IM was special! I grew up listening to Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys already! Social Destortion! Fuckn hell! IM fit the bill perfectly!
Whatever you do,just DO NOT mention punk to Steve Harris!
Maiden are way better than metallica
lol, not even close.
Killers is my favorite. Just slightly over the debut.
Even the band themselves are lukewarm on 'Killers', it just mopped up the early songs not used on the debut.
RIP Malcolm Dome RIP
And still no cause of death listed anywhere.. he died late 2021 right at the height of jibby-jab mania.. move along, nothing to see here folks..
