  • Finally got the Cobalt 292 back to the house to start the process of detailing it. First things first, we are polishing up the hull in this video to get rid of all the oxidation on the gelcoat and bring it back to a shine, and also seal it with a ceramic polymer top coat.
I used to use 3m Perfect-It line of gelcoat compounds for years and they were great. Then I switched to Smoove compound products a couple years ago and liked them better than the 3M line. This time around I was running out of Smoove compound so I bought a Meguiar's One Step Compound for marine and gelcoat. WOW. What a difference the Mequiar's made. It was so much faster and left a much better shine on the gelcoat. Consider me converted!
This video isn't a total step-by-step, but a high level overview of my process. I hope it is helpful for any of you that are detailing your boat or your RV.
I also have another video on the channel from a couple years ago that goes into a little more detail on the process of compounding. Check it out here: • How to Buff and Compou...

Nice results. Apparently Cobalt boats have notoriously hard gelcoat. There is even a thing where Cobalt’s get oxidation but the gelcoat is still shiny.

It's not just Cobalt. Every boat we have ever owned has similar oxidation after time and needs regular maintenance. What I can tell you about the Cobalt though is that it has really good quality gelcoat in comparison the the SeaRays we have owned in the past, not sure how to describe it. The Cobalt gelcoat seems tougher and you can get it back to shiny easier than our previous SeaRay boats.

@@NKPGarageLee at “local boydidgood” describes SeaRay gelcoat as being “soft” and that it compounds like butter. He will take 3M Super Duty to battle the Cobalt gelcoat hardness, then 3M Heavy Cut, finishing with Perfect It EX AC, depending on the oxidation level. I need to get my boat compounded soon.

@terryhillyer529 that’s a great description. That’s been my experience as well with the Searay gelcoat being softer.

#67 by Meguiar’s, is full of oil, make sure to clean the boat with soap and water before "waxing" the boat. Don't use a ceramic on older gelcoat, there's boat waxes that work as well for them.
Your boat needed Super-Duty then Heavy Cut and then Perfect-it ex ac. With that, perfection.
    Nice video.

(here's what I did last time I had one of "those" boats)
The 3M "marine line" sucks. Their dedicated compounds on a 3M wool pad is (in my humble opinion) unbeatable.

I helped design that buffer... Not just trying to sling mud.

Yup, you are spot on. I noticed the oily-ness. I wiped down with alcohol before the top coat, but when wiping down i definitely noticed some haziness coming back as the oil was wiped off. Those are great suggestions. I'm going to make a list and give your outlined method a shot next time around.
