    I lived in Oly for five years (worked for the transit district). Fun fact: It is the southern most navigable harbor on the Puget Sound. It is also the home to a lot of very nice people.

    • @RawOlympia
      @RawOlympia Месяц назад

      they dredged the harbour which is super polluted from Cascade poll - a very polluted place, bringing in ships way too large to a very corrupt port shipping off old growth to China for cheap after making deals to put mills out of business here and to provide offshore Chinese milling.

    I live in Olympia, Washington. The empty stand is intended to be empty to encourage performances such as poetry, music, etc. The empty stand is called a plinth.

    I am an LA transplant who has called Olympia home for the past seven years. As an artist myself I chose to retire here because of its vibrant art/music scene. We have beautiful murals all over the downtown area. The State Theatre is not "boarded up"; Harlequin Productions produces wonderful plays there all of the time. You heard a chicken laying an egg when you were driving around that neighborhood. Towns without graffiti, crime and homelessness are rare these days. I absolutely love Olympia and have had no regrets choosing to relocate here.

    Currently live here. You forgot to go by the hospital and the HUGE homeless camps. there is a road going to the hospital that is lined with broken down rvs. The amount of homelessness and drugs is awful. The state take payers were charged with 800,000 dollars for big boulders for them to palce under the overpasses and along the highways and under our trees to prevent homeless from camping. I havent seen downtown that clean in years! This used to be a beautiful place to live years ago😢

    Local since 1985. Love all your tours...been following for a year. Loved THIS TOUR OF OLY. Wish we could have given you some info for your tour... btw: The State Theater you pass...is not boarded up...and is VERY ACTIVE...with live plays all year round...very community oriented. One big reason for high crime: Because we're the State Capitol...all services can be had here (as far as government provided)...aka, it draws many people who are in freefall to want to live here. Outside of downtown....very quiet... I live 1 miles (walking) from dt. You'd think you were in a forest. In fact, your opening shot..of the statue....is looking west toward my home across the bay...really wish you would have driven up that way along the bay....MANY INLETS of Puget Sound, so LOTS OF ON THE WATER HOMES. You can set sail here, and go around the world.

    So, random story, but I have to share. I was in Lincoln City, Oregon this last week on vacation. I roll into a pizza place (shoutout to Tie Dye Pizza) for lunch and order. While the pizza is being made/cooked, I start chatting with the person working (I presume the owner) and the topic of homelessness in Portland gets brought up. As the conversation carries along, he starts talking about this RUclips channel he watches where they went to Oakland a couple weeks ago and he couldn't believe what he saw on the video. As he is telling me this, my gears start turning in my head, as I saw a similar video about a week before. Before I could say anything, he tells me it's a husband and wife that travels from city to city documenting it on RUclips. Joe & Nic. Whoa!!! That's the same channel I watch. So, yeah, small world. Thought that was funny.
    Also, I really enjoyed the pizza I had. If anybody is ever in Lincoln City, stop by there and order yourself a pizza.

    It's sad to say, but we have a gang problem here along with a homelessness with drug problems as well. Tourism, especially in the spring and summer time, is a big bundle of money for these businesses. So they have to go out and clean up to make sure everything is beautiful to keep that money coming in. Washington is a beautiful state. some areas are getting corrupted in a bad way. But there is so much more beauty to Washington than just these little areas.

    I’ve spent many nights in Olympia/Lacey. It’s the closest safe, boring, affordable place to Seattle for a quick hotel stay on a business trip. This last trip was interesting. The previously sleepy and clean hotel had thick plexiglass around the check-in desk and warnings about keeping your car locked, plus advisories to guests that visitors were not welcome after hours, no hair dye in the bathtub, etc. Talked to a bartender who said the whole area had gone ghetto in a matter of months. I grew up here. We all use to love what olympia offered. We attended everything and supported much of what went on. Now we none even bother to go that way. It's another world and one we don't desire to support, look at or be near. It's very sad for many of us. Thankfully we have ways of getting around so we no longer have to drive through the down town. I can't tell you how many hundreds of times I walked in the beautiful, safe, fun and amazing downtown Olympia,Washington, but those are memories from the past. And it's like we don't even live in the same city. It will never return to the one time beauty it once was. When those in charge stop carrying, the results are precisely what we now see in downtown Olympia. You can still find some good food downtown, but not many of us old timers care to wallow in the mire. I wish you would have called out the street names and more of the businesses. Thank you for your time in our once upon a beautiful city.

      It's still beautiful. We are all responsible for the problems. The city council is run by the downtown business owners association. The housless are herded by police into areas, and the property values decrease in those areas. Then, a rich out of town developer buys up the property at a discount and builds condos that artists and evergreen students can't afford. Then more people become housless. Why do you think your property taxes are so expensive? Ask yourself why fire department sends out a ladder truck on every housless emergency. Certain people ate getting rich off of the decay of our community.

But it is sad the graffiti has marred the city. Very nice homes around Olympia. Gorgeous rotunda at the Capitol building. Love the chandelier. Your food looked delicious. Thanks for visiting my states capitol city. Like any larger city here we have our share of issues homelessness being one of the larger ones. The State theatre is very much open, the building is presently having a major interior renovation done as a good friend of mine works there. Harlequin Productions puts on spectacular shows which many people have raved about. I highly recommend any visitor thats up for great live theatre to check out a show...you won't be disappointed.
    A few fun facts about the capitol building itself..our current one that is. The flags you saw in the four corners of the rotunda represent each of our 39 counties with King County being the largest where Seattle is located.
    The exterior of the dome does get cleaned usually every 3-5 years or so given the dingy look the moss and other elements that live upon it. The building is also modeled after our nations capitol in D.C.. We are also the only state in the country whose flags primary color is green which is fitting given we are The Evergreen State.
    As for restaurants in town, there are so many and the vast majority are very good places based on personal experience and from what friends of mine have told me. I am glad your dining experience was a good one.
    Thanks for visiting and I hope your visit was a positive one and that you will return in the future.
