- I visited these Northern California towns: Redding, Mt Shasta City, Weed & Yreka. Afterwards, Nicole and I had dinner at Redding's landmark restaurant, Jack's Grill.

Thank you for taking us through these quaint little towns in an area of exceptional natural beauty!
I read about Redding several years back on social media when I stumbled on a Facebook page run by locals who were complaining that their town was being taken over by an Evangelical cult!
Yeah, you wouldn't want an outbreak of honesty, would you!
"I stumbled on a Facebook page run by (satanic) locals who were complaining that their town was being taken over by an Evangelicals"
Merle Haggard the late, great country legend singer and songwriter spent alot of time on Lake Shasta and mentioned it in the song "My favorite memory of all"
Merle had a ranch nearby in Palo Cedro, same town that my distant family homesteaded.
I was born in Bakersfield and have been a merle fan for decades.. they don't make em like they used to.
@@N2Roost Merle's bar in Jones Valley (on Shasta Lake) just burnt down last week

As a Redding resident I am absolutely impressed with how much footage you managed to get without any of our 1200 homeless lol
They are citizens just like you are.
Never said they're not citizens? What a weird reply
@@TheFallenScathed You are the one calling them homeless instead of unhoused. That kind of pejorative language conveys a lot.
@@babyboomercritic1119 creating controversy where there is none says even more. Changing terminology doesn't change a situation it just let's you feel more pompous. I've been homeless and I've worked with them and still work with various programs to help them while you, what? criticize strangers for using nomenclature you don't like?
@@keeplaughing8181 Yes. English is a real language and can be understood. Get over it when you say the quiet part out loud and everyone gets it.
Redding gets VERY hot in the summer! As hot as the southern Cal deserts. Even though it's so far in Northern California.
You say that like it's a bad thing. I can't wait to move there for my retirement.
The median home prices may be low, but, good luck getting them insured!
Dave: Why is insurance difficult to get? I understand Florida rates, but Redding?
@@billderinbaja3883 The Carr fire destroyed over a thousand homes so rates gotta go up. A lot of major insurance companies have left California leaving the California Fair Plan to take up the slack.
@@dgsantafedave1: A quick lookup and few calcs reveal: (1) Homes destroyed in wildfires are .003% of homes in California... not a big number (2) Six insurance companies have stopped insuring in California, representing appx 1.3% of residential coverage in the state. So... I agree it is "more difficult and expensive", but by very small margins. California, in spite of it's many flaws, is where the money is... it is a great place to live.
The summers may be hot, but the creeks, rivers and lakes make up for it. My childhood was filled every summer with spending time swimming, camping, walking to town and bike riding to the plunge for a day of fun. On the way home I'd stop at Hinkle's Market to get a a pop. Great memories♡
Omg. From the thumbnail to market you mentioned, I already know where this is. Don't tell anyone. We want to have relative peace & safety here.
And there's gold in every single one of 'em.

Northern California is beautiful!
I live in Redding and a retired truck driver. My route was from Redding to Yreka and stopping in Mt Shasta to also unload daily. Yreka was never like that. That encampment is something more recent. I think the county is struggling because of the lack of any sort of industry in the Yreka area. They don’t have the tourism dollars like Mt Shasta. Things changed drastically since Covid. Especially in the attitudes of government. We have all the same issues as the big cities on smaller scales. Lots of illegal grows in the surrounding areas and big drug issues with the transient populations. We however live in a beautiful area we need to get crime under control. The state has made grave errors in their bills easing consequences for crime. Small towns with little to no income feel it the worst.
I haven’t been to Yreka in decades. One of my cousins lived there. But it was a nice little town then.
you fool yourself if you think the drug use is only among transient populations- look around
Time to stop blaming the government for everything. Some of the failures are because the parenting sucks and other factors
I would bet that many of Redding's homeless are not from that area.
Big city homeless drop-offs have become a real problem here in Tuolumne County. In 2021, it was estimated that there were about 250 homeless here in Tuolumne County. Many of them lost their jobs due to the COVID shutdowns.
Now there are close to 1,000. Most are from central valley towns or the East Bay. They were dropped off by cops or homeless advocates. Many residents have seen this and have talked to these drop offs.

Government is the one running the ship and passing the laws. Parents are only a small part of that as the government incentivizes/rewards laziness and criminal tendencies among adults.
The town of Mt. Shasta was the home of the first Black Bear Diner.
Good food!
Really? I thought it started in Oregon.
@@michaellee9883 "Black Bear Diner is a restaurant chain in the Western United States which serves homestyle and "old-fashioned" comfort foods. The first restaurant was opened in Mount Shasta, California in 1995, founded by Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley."
Yes, Mt Shasta city is the start to Black Bear diner. I love the New York steak & eggs breakfast.
I went to the first one. The female hostess openly hit on my friend in a very agressive way
I dont know how i came to see your video's but now I'm addicted, been catching up with your last 2-3 years of travels, absolutely love them, joe you are a great narrator, everynight 2-3 hours i spend watching, don't stop filming😊
Norther California is Beautiful! Anything North of Santa Rosa is worth the trip. The Bay Area is going through some stuff right now, living in California my whole life things have really changed since covid, dramatically. Thank you for the Videos, I really appreciate you 2 shining the light on all the good stuff Ca still has to offer..
The Bay Area and San Francisco are doing just fine. Still some of the most beautiful places to live.
It's alright, yet governor is a dictator so its actually ugly in California
Dont worry, DEI will worm its way in to these towns.

Oh!!! I lived in Northern California until 5 years ago, graduated from Shasta High , in Redding. Had my first child there. Lived in Siskiyou county since 8 th grade, went to school in Yreka and FortJones . Dated a boy from Etna. Left little town of Palermo, near Oroville. I love the NorthState♥️Left for Missouri! Thank you for a view of my past!
Do you like living in Missouri?
@@salishseas Absolutely!

You missed two horrible fires, one in Oroville and the Park Fire intentionally started in Bidwell Park burning somewhere close to 740,000 acres. Homeowners insurance is unaffordable after the Camp Fire in Paradise so you made a good decision to leave CA!
@@moonwork742 oh I was there for the Paradise fire and I’ve been watching the Park fire. Almost 5 years here in Missouri and I still watch the Butte County Facebook pages to see what’s happening! My Homeowners insurance is 3 x more than when I live in Bitte County, here in Missouri! I can see how it would go up! Be blessed♥️
At the end. Jack's Grill. $148.00. Yikes! Way overpriced for the quality of the salad and potato. $27 for six deep-fried scallops . Jeepers! Run away they are robbing you guys
He should go to the yaks in dunsmir. The water there is magical, literally! You have to get their bourbon sticky buns and a burger.
I was thinking the same! I thought they paid nearly double what that meal should have cost. But you have to remember this is California....🙄
Thank you Joe & Nic. Lived in CA (NorCal- East Bay)50 yrs in what I believe is maybe the prettiest state of them all, so many different landscapes. Unfortunately it’s going through some really rough times that many seem to ignore or deny, which is why change won’t happen. We left so our kids could afford to own a home some day. I do miss those landscapes though. Safe travels you two, Oregon is gorgeous too!
Sad, Redding crime rate about 100% over national average and about 50% over CA average.
Not all bad though, schools, medical, commute rated pretty good.
I’m sure there are much better and worse places to live in CA and nation
I disagree! Beautiful states everywhere in United States! Keep it all in perspective.😁👍
I’m from the east bay now in Sacramento but I’d love to move someplace that is affordable 🥲
Alaska is the most beautiful state.
Fresno Co used to be Red, but Bay Area and SoCal ppl discovered our more affordable housing prices 😪
Weed is the southern terminus of Highway 97. It goes north the 49th, entering Canada at Osoyoos, British Columbia, continuing on to the 60th where it end in Watson Lake, Yukon. It’s a distance of just over 3,100 km (1,930 miles). I live along Hwy 97 in the BC Southern Interior.
Hello from eastern Washington
Well if she pays for everything and leaves you you are in big trouble, good luck. Homelessness in California is normal nowadays. Wow, a $150 meal for two, not me. You're in trouble now, I currently live in Klamath Falls, OR but should be back on the road by September. Thanks for the tour and have fun.
As you head into that region, the awe-inspiring view of Mt. Shasta makes the trip worth every mile. It's really something like no other!
I have a nephew who plays baseball at Simpson College. He holds the home run record now.
Proud of him. He loves it and isnt coming back to Central Valley!
Our Carnegie library was built in 1906 by Andrew Carnegie and was Oxnard's first library. Building also served as Oxnard’s City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Art Club of Oxnard. In 1987, it opened as the arts museum.
An awesome video, as always ! Very interesting towns to explore, and the mountain backdrop is beautiful ! Cute cats ! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic.🥰
Exited my home state California for 65 years. Nor-Cal / Sac town will always be in my heart. Found peace here on the Oregon Coast in a small conservative town where everyone respects one another and the environment.
Anyone who has traveled/visited the Oregon Coast will confirm the amazing coastline !
Ugh, I think I know where you went. I wish we could afford it. So many regulations, restrictions. :(
Shhh! Stop letting the secret out!
Thank you for not bringing your communism to Arizona.
I did the same thing 14 years ago and left Sacramento County for Wasco County Oregon which is very conservative and the end of the Oregon trail
I left corruptifornia 23 years ago after being born there & lived there 44 years. I first moved to Klamath Falls Or area, now live in Springfield Oregon. Every time I see something more assanine the state comes up with, it makes me smile & not regret moving at all.
Joe, you should visit Eureka, Ferndale, and Trinidad it's just three hours east of Redding
Yes ! Those areas are extremely beautiful!!!!!
And the drive there is one of California’s most beautiful trips!
Don't forget about Petrolia. The road between there and Ferndale might be one of the best drives in the entire country.
That would be West of Redding
those towns are on the coast, not east of redding
We really enjoy your travels.
Like watching you going through my home state of California.
It's been years since visiting places you are going to, since I no longer live in CA, great memories
Thanks for your fun informative travels. 👍😁✌️
Thank you!
Been to those areas of California for deliveries. Personally, I was a bit afraid of the people there bc of how really conservative those areas are and me being hispanic. But honestly, people were really nice like people have said in the comments-took me by surprise.
I also heard there are many Native American Reservations and Rancherias up there.
Edit: I don’t mean to disrespect, It was just a preconceived notion I had before going over there. But being there in person and talking to folks, refuted those notions I had.
During the late 80’s and thru the 90’s we passed through Redding regularly, on one occasion we stopped at the park to have a cup. A couple of Low Riders pulled in and started blasting music for everyone to enjoy, some spiked with profanity. That lasted about 5 minutes and Reddings finest arrived issuing noise violation citations, gotta love it we thought ❤️
I'm not sure why you call them Reddings finest when all it takes to get hired is a heartbeat and a high school diploma. I'm sure there's some good people amongst that crew but I'm sure with those standards there's also some bad ones. Kind of like the military. Except in the military they get rid of the bad apples because they don't have a union protecting them.
@@meghancass3187 So I’m assuming of course, a high school graduate doesn’t qualify, only college will be acceptable. In that case you need to research the study the military did in the 70’s in an attempt to find why so many were failing the academy entrance examinations. A 1940 California high school diploma was the equivalent of a 1955 state university minor graduate, doesn’t say much for the education system today...So much for that.
Now, The city’s finest, has always been a reference to the Police Department, at least in my 90 years.
Another small item I wish too add: we no longer have a system of education it is now a system of indoctrination.
Hope yall get to see the north coast and Redwoods before you leave!
This is just great!! Thnx Nic & Joe!! I’m in a hotel regularly and find your shows are a great way to wind down. I love the cat spotting. Thnx and keep it up!!🤘🏼
I've always loved the beauty of Northern California. When will you go through California again? If you do, could you go to Placerville? That's where I was born
I was surprised to see that encampment at the last town, actually shocked. The first town of Redding and Mt Shasta were beautiful. Clean streets and quiet towns. Thanks for sharing and have a great day and safe travels
The Dems bussed them up here, same with Victorville, Adelanto.
I live in Redding and once you get out of the downtown area you really see the homeless problem. I live just outside city limits and we have a huge homeless problem out here.
There are homeless in virtually every town, they just werent shown in this video of Redding.
If a town is civil and makes any attempt to help the homeless population they will be overrun in the extreme very quickly. Chasing the homeless around like they are stray dogs and not letting them settle anywhere is the usual plan of attack.
CA is livable more or less year round, of course homeless head here rather than freeze to death in other states.
@@JasmineJohnsonPsychicMediumIt’s more of a drug problem than a homeless problem
@@coastalhillbilly3419 That is the absolute truth. You would not believe the behavior we see out here!
On December 23rd, 1970 , I was 18 years old and traveling from Monterey CA to Salem Oregon with my new husband and my 17 year old brother to visit my parents who had deserted us in CA to move to Oregon. We wanted to spend Xmas with them. Unfortunately, a huge snowstorm closed the highway at Weed and our Volkswagon bug quit during the storm because the engine cover was chopped. We spent 2 days in Weed getting the car fixed and I'll never forget how kind the motel and car shop were to these infantile travelers.
1970 so different from 2024
One negative about Redding is that the summers are really hot. 105 to 110 or higher not uncommon.

Hey Joe - you seem to be into old storefronts, signs, etc. - If you ever do Cincinnati or nearby, you should check out the American Sing Museum there - I think you'd really enjoy it.
I'm third generation San Franciscan and really appreciate your videos of California. Like i run into so many times, the tourist will see more of the state in one week than I've seen in my life.😂 I really love California history and I've always been fascinated in how impactful the West was to the rest of the country and the rest of the world. Big fan of Jack London and Mark Twain and the entire Gold Rush era. I've only been to a few of the Gold country towns and I appreciate your reigniting my interest in visiting more of them.
History, through books, is all well and good. One must put the book down (or, better, take it with you) and get out and see California. Why wait? Why should a week long visit by a tourist come close to a lifetime of living and traveling throughout California?
41:02 Back around 2010 we visited northern California and southern Oregon. After spending a day visiting the Redwoods it was getting dark and we stopped at a bar southeast of Eureka. My wife said the place looked a little sketchy so my son and I went in and scoped it out. Everyone including the bartender had a gun strapped to their hip, I felt right at home. I told my wife and daughter to come in and we were welcomed as if we were long lost friends. I asked if they had a menu but the bartender said every night they put out a potluck dinner and if you want food put some money in the kitty. The food was phenomenal. I mentioned that I always thought California frowned on firearm ownership and what did the local law enforcement think about everyone being armed. The bartender pointed out a man at the end of the bar and said that was the local sheriff, he just looked at me and smiled. We ran into similar circumstances in almost every western state. I've noticed that the big cities and a narrow strip along the interstates are blue, everything else is as red as can be. Another cool tour, thanks much!
Great experience, thanks for posting it!
True. Bakersfield is largely red.
Yep!
From napa calif here and i loved growing up there we had a 500 acre cattle and deer hunting ranch.
All so true. Big hearts and proud of the red, white and blue.

It gets hot in Redding around 100 degrees. San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay are a nice place to visit for a vacation . SLO county has winery's, beaches, restaurants, Solvang a town with lots of little shops and windmill patterned after a Dutch town is close by. On Thursday and Saturday the museum at In San Luis Obispo the Peach Tree Inn is a cute motel with parking in front of the rooms they offer a breakfast with no eggs, bacon but everything else. The Bay Area Roadsters and the California Roadsters rent out the whole Motel on Memorial day weekend and use it as a base for exploring the area. The least expensive is the Lamp lighter Inn is clean and the maids try their best. San Luis Obispo has a Spanish Mission, Bubble Gum Alley, a movie theater, live theater, The Madonna Inn is a pink hotel with a bar dinning area that is fancy pink and each room has a theme. Camp Roberts was a large military base and has a Museum open on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Weed Mercantile Mall is one of the strangest places I have ever been in my life. If anyone ever has a chance to go when they're open, GO! It's completely bizarre and worth it (and huge, tons of different rooms all themed, so strange).
I really enjoyed your vid. Your relaxed &informative approach is cool, friendly. And, despite the misspell in the notes, you certainly pronounce "Redding" correctly
Thanks for the great travelogues. The heat in summer, well, you understate it. 104°-110° is more like it, it is hellish, truthfully.j

Away from the major population areas, the state is pretty conservative. From the southeast corner, up through the Central Valley (Sacramento being the exception), east along the Sierras, and the very northern counties, the majority of people prefer a more traditional existence. I'm looking forward to moving back for retirement.
This was so interesting to see all the lovely buildings, some of the store fronts are gorgeous. The trees are pretty too they make everything look lovely, more so as we come away from Winter.

I’ve lived in California my entire 63 years. I can tell you firsthand that part of our current problem is that 1/3 of people living in California are not from California. Redding is okay (not bad but not great) compared to my hometown of San Luis Obispo. I have always wondered why Red counties and states have really bad weather, very hot summers and very cold winters. Great video , my wife and I usually stop at the Black Bear Diner in Redding.
Red is the rural areas. There's a lot of livestock ranches in the area, plus orchards and crops that like the higher temps. Same with the counties of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Calaveras, Amador, Madera, Fresno Tulare, etc... Anywhere there isn't a high populous.
You're exactly right...I say 1/3 is being generous...most of the people I meet now came here from New York/east coast or are foreign born

The scenes in Jack's freaked us out!! We lived just south for 15 years and the wife and I had many a steaks at the same table you were at!! We used to call it our table, and now its a RUclips star.
If you make it as far as Washington, follow the Columbia River on route 4 from Longview west. Lots of Lewis and Clark stuff including Dismal Nitch where they sheltered from a storm. Along the way there is a charming little town named Cathlamet which was settled by James Birnie.
Wow, cool!
Another great video !! I always enjoy your comments on architecture and have learned a lot from your videos !! I was very happy to see such lovely (red) towns in California !!
While Redding is in a beautiful location, with 3 hr drives to the beach, Reno, Sacramento, and Oregon. We are also surrounded by every kind of recreation you could desire. Which makes us a tourist destination. However, in the Summer, especially this year we see temperatures of up to 124°.
Redding's poverty rate is much higher than you think. Most of our residents are retired or disabled. And we are much more diverse than reported. Also you completely missed half the town. The east side of Redding is on the Bluff above the River along I-5

Thanks for the tour of Redding. Except for visiting the Sun Dial Bridge, it has always been a place to drive through on my way to Lassen or further north. At 19:50--Black Butte has always fascinated me, I'd love to see the view from up top someday. While Weed isn't named for the "herb", they certainly don't shy away from trading on the association. I doubt any of the "I Love Weed" trinkets in the gift shops are sold to people who want to remember Abner 🙂
Speaking of Mark Twain, the Francis of Assisi quote brings to mind a saying of his I think is also appropriate: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." See you in Oregon next time!
As modern architecture goes, the Shasta County Courthouse is relatively attractive. Definitely like the post office.
Bradford Pears were blooming everywhere in Maryland weeks ago. I work in a garden center and occasionally have customers looking to buy one and I have to tell them that we don’t sell them-haven’t for years. They’re like dandelions, beautiful but insidious weeds.

@@PatRiarchy-qw6cp You must not live here. I do, and the state is the place to be.

Excellent Documentary. I lived in Redding for 40 years.
I strongly believe the high cost of housing has driven people out into the streets. My dad one said, “One day people who have paid their houses off will no longer be able to pay their taxes and will become homeless”! Here we are. People in my town are really struggling and many rely on our food bank and meat ministry because they can’t afford groceries. I bought my house 10 years ago and since the value of my house trippled. Rents are rediculously high. You would expect these rents in big cities but not in the most isolated rural town in all of Idaho.
In California, they have section 8 housing. The other thing is I live in Sacramento. I am from the east Bay area. I could never in 1 million years afford to live there again so I don’t even attempt to. There might be multiple reasons why someone doesn’t move, but if you cannot afford to live somewhere move where you can don’t stay there and live on the street. The other thing is our local police department just went through and talk to 87 homeless people one person took them off on the many offers they gave them for multiple agencies to help them, so they need to get them off the street they need to be supervised housing. Drug rehab, counseling etc I don’t think it’s acceptable to leave mentally ill people on the street. I think it’s cruel and disgusting and I would think most of them are from what I’ve seen.
What Abby said- 6 and 7 gen N Californian and this is hardcore truth. And the homeless aka housing advocates make BANK for life by never actually fixing the problems they claim to try and help
Also CA has Prop.13- your prop taxes cannot go up by more than I think 3% a year from your purchase price UNLESS you do massive additions or renovations, add a bath or more than a room.
It protects exactly those needing it in their original homes but not those who have money to burn on big improvements
@@seaneendelong8065 Thank goodness for Prop 13. I wouldn't be in my home if it wasn't for that proposition. I just paid off my home this month. Lots of people and agencies want to abolish that prop because they don't think it's fair and the state wants the additional $$. However, if that prop is abolished there will be a lot more foreclosures and homeless. It takes sacrifice (being fiscally conservative and responsible) to own a home. I hear from a lot of parents that their kids can't afford homes; but those same kids are spending their money on new iphones every time a new model comes out, elaborate vacations, new clothes, expensive dining, and they live for a Pinterest indulgent lifestyle. They don't want to sacrifice. Plus, they only want to live in high class towns with no commute. I'm 54 and I've had to commute for 34 years; been in my house for 27 years and am still "fix'n" it up.
California passed Prop 13 back in the 70s. It protects people from the rising cost of property tax. Housing inflation drives up the property tax on purchases. However, you don't suffer under increasing property tax once you've bought it. In fact, you can leave your home to your kids and the tax won't go up so long as they don't sell it.
I was born & raised in Chico, lived in Red Bluff & have family in the area! Makes me homesick ❤ , thanks for sharing!
Welcome to Oregon! Eugene is cleaned up from a year ago, but the homeless camps just went to the county. Check out Poodle Creek Road off of 126 by Noti.
You asked why the windows would be boarded up. It is a reaction to ADA litigation. The upper apartments could not be made accessible so they are abandoned. This is a national issue. I call it Harkin blight. I was a commercial property manager and saw this over many cities and states.
Interesting.
First things I noticed were how clean these towns were of litter and graffiti. Nice informative walking tour. That restaurant tab blew my mind, I guess I don't get out much. Thanks for posting!
northern CA is beautiful but the people are really different than the rest of the state, they are ultra conservative. Shasta wants to succeed from CA. I'm retired and want to be near good healthcare with other resources nearby. And good luck getting fire insurance up there. That homeless camp in Yreka was surprising, hardly anyone lives near there.
Surprising crime rate for such a beautiful small town
Ultra conservative californians? Music to my ears

I live in Redding, that courthouse just opened less than a month ago. It is an eyesore to everyone I know. They say we don’t have enough jail cells to hold all the inmates but the new courthouse has over100 new cells. Jack’s grill is way over priced, they also have cockroaches. Thanks for taking us along. First time watching you. I enjoyed seeing old buildings and towns. 🙋🏼♀️
Awesome!
I'm from Redding . Haven't lived there for many years and will never live there again. My mother still lives there.
Too hot. Otherwise, nice. 3 hours north of Sactown.
Great video as always. Can't wait to see your take on my home state of Oregon!
Siskiyou county where Mt. Shasta, Weed & Yreka is one of the biggest Marijuana growing & cultivation industry in California! Besides many fires that have displaced families from the Happy Camp mountain community near there, many young people came up to that part of the state to make a fast buck harvesting the smoke. Besides the northern costal towns between Humboldt to Del Norte County being large Marijuana growing areas, Siskiyou is , too, and I think that has contributed to the large encampment of homelessness in Yreka. So sad but true.
They did not call the town Weed for no reason.
A lot of that is way west from Redding though. It's too hot here Mt Shasta and the weather is too harsh there. California is a huge state, so pot growing is much farther west for the most part.
@@techserviceondemand9409 Funny joke.... but obviously not because of that. LOL
And here I thought Weed was named Weed because of...of course.... WEED.
I wish you would have truly remained neutral on the Red and Blue issue. It really ruined the video for me.
THANK YOU ! REALLY ENJOYED THE VIDEO..IVE LIVED IN RED BLUFF 60 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER VISITED THE AREAS YOU TOOK US TO .
$48 for a steak in a town with a high poverty rate. My aunt was married to John who was born and raised in Yreka. He hated it, never wanted to go back. His father owned the only pharmacy in town and was prosperous. I visited his father's home in Yreka in around 1980. The home was very nice and it was obvious that he was privileged. I believe the home was on the perimeter of the park at 36:50 of the video. I was in Yreka for the dedication of headquarters of the US Forest Service which the father had been involved with in some way.
A member of the Democratic Socialist Party would say............
Great video as always thanks for sharing joe and Nic 👍
I think I have seen everyone of your videos love them. Have you ever been to Long Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach. I saw your Los Angeles video. Its a shame, actually I have not been to l.A. since high school.
Wow I have past Yreka countless times in between Oregon and the bay area and have never had the inclination to go past the gas stations on the 5. You just made me want to hop in the car and take the camera over the pass to the south for the day.
It isn't the state that's so liberal, its the leadership, and of course the metropolitan areas, we are doing our part to make ca great again!
Ca is beautiful. I’ve done a lot of traveling the states and I was born and raised in The Bay Area. CA it is by far the most fun and the most beautiful. I moved in 2020 because things went from a little annoying to unlivable for me at that point. Now I live in Texas and I really do get home sick. But it’s a lot like CA use to be about 10-15 years ago. I enjoy that part. Definitely not as pretty even in the hill country where I’m at. Redding is a lovely little city. If I move back to CA I’ll probably try to land there.
I recognized the Sun Dial Bridge as a Santiago Calatrava design. Milwaukee, WI has a beautiful Calatrava structure next to the Art Museum right on Lake Michigan.
One of my favorite videos from you. I have been to every town you visited and still learned something about every place. I always laugh when I pass through Weed and wondered how Yreka came up with their unusual name, and never in a million years could I have imagined it was from bakery spelled backwards. Enjoy Oregon and I really hope you visit Bend, as that is one of my favorite places and a place I know you and Nicole will love.
Thank you for the kind words!!
Nice to see the nice side of California and not the tent cities etc. Nice video and well spoken
I've been to Redding and Mt Shasta for snow skiiing or perhaps snow viewing coming from the Hercules and Woodland areas since we don't get snow down in Yolo and Contra Costa Counties. Beautiful towns and nice people.
Thank you for this video California is my home state but I live in Michigan now I have for a long time😊
I had 2 Bradford Pear trees in my yard. 1 lost to a tornado that didn't even bother the house. The other is slowly giving way to wind and bugs, not hardy trees.
Redding is nice if you can handle the summer heat! One of the hottest places in the state
I always warn people that come into Redding to stay to prepare for our summer heat and smoke.
I believe it gets a bit hotter than Fl in the summer months. We get the breeze from gulf and Atlantic! Rarely does it get triple digits! 😁👍
aside from Death Valley
I'd rather the heat than the cold.
@lkd06 Death Valley is the hottest place on earth, I wasn't comparing the two 😆. That being said, unless you've been to Redding in the summer you prob wouldn't believe how hot it gets being its at the top of the north state.
Weed and yreka are the city to us in the Scott valley in Siskiyou! Come to the Scott valley sometime. See a slice of rural heaven!
Another very nice video. All the towns had some very nice housing. The cost of living in Yreka is probably influenced by the high crime rate. I'm not a fan of snow so these towns don't tempt me. I grew up in Utah too and am glad to live in the Texas Hill Country. Driving in snow, as you mentioned in the video, isn't fun. It sounds like your limp is back a little. I struggle with my legs myself. The food looked great. It is good you are closing upon the half million subscriber mark as eating out like that is a tad bit pricy. Your income from RUclips should be covering the bill nicely. Thanks again for another entertaining video. The cats were indeed a nice bonus. We have a Himalayan Blue Point here at the house and a Chihuahua, the state dog of Texas :) Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you for the great comment. 😀
G'day Joe n Nic, In the dozen times I've been to the US and Canada I was confused about the entree being either soup or salad, with my steak and potato one or the other, in Oz the soup is an entree and then you have a choice between salad or vegetables with your main. So I would order both the soup and salad consume the consumee first then scrape the salad onto the main when it arrived they looked at me stangely whilst eating a proper meal. PS in relation to Redding residents and the sundial bridge how many elephants would equate to 6000 locals keeping in mind the number of fast food outlets in the city?
Mt Shasta is beautiful 😍 Interesting small towns. Awesome video as always! Thank you. ❤
I live in Northern Nevada and have family in WA and OR so I have spent the night in Yreka more times than I can remember. But I never have spent an extra night and got a really good look around. But it’s a lovely town. I also never went to Redding because it so many miles out of the way for my visits. I should do a staycation there someday. I love the Mt. Shasta area of California. I have seen so many amazing days over the decades. Like a butterfly migration by McCloud. How lucky was that. Love that region.
Yreka Bakery spelled backwards is Yreka Bakery
Joe- when you were in downtown Redding you showed the white building that was built in 1888. Don't know if you noticed it said " IOOF " above the date. That building was originally built for the INTERNATIONAL ORDER of ODD FELLOWS- which was a secret fraternal organization like the Freemasons- and way back in the day they were bigger than the Freemasons.
Another wonderful video. Take Care
Rob
Interesting! Thanks for the info.
This is interesting information and I didn't know about this group... however, secret fraternal groups like the freemasons are doing some shady and very illegal things on the highest levels, things that I can't type here because it's too bad to mention. It's a dangerous group of people, and every time I see an empty masonic lodge, I am hopeful and take it as a sign that these criminals are reducing in numbers.
I wonder how much cruising they did in Redding during the 50's and 60's. I enjoy your video's. Thank you.
Enjoyed the ride see you next week 👍👍💕
What a beautiful place. I definitely need to put on my bucket list. 'Preciate Ya and God Bless!
Great video. I got a good laugh when you said that towns name. Weed, being California, I just assumed it was named after the devil's lettuce.
Very interesting as usual. Love your videos 😍
Thank you!
The crime rate thing seems weird to me. I hardly ever hear of weird crime around here (I live near Yreka)
Right. Those drugs put people in catatonic states. They are plugged up so can only make urine most of the time. They are rotting from the inside out, and are going insane. So, yes, limited violent crimes until the gangs selling drugs start robbing, killing, setting up under age prostitution. Then all H will descend on your towns after they reach 100,000 pop.
I know this vid has been out for a while - just want to say how much I am enjoying your videos - I live in Marin County just north of SF coastal. The Marin coast is awesome but the whole North Coast area is its own world and worth an exploration. Lots of interesting small towns hugging the coast, the coast is rugged and beautiful but tends to be cold, and the trees up in Humboldt are incredible. Not a lot of homeless from what I saw - maybe too cold. But I believe some poverty, but also a lot of money.
I live in Redding. My son lives in LA and came to visit. He was shocked at how friendly the people were. We were at the Home Depot and getting ready to load our stuff, and two sets of people stopped to offer help even though we are able bodied men. First trip to the grocery store, and a number people we met going the other way in the aisle said "Hi". Gov. Covid rules ruined a lot of the town and it has not yet recovered.
You toured one of the most crime ridden areas. I never see it, as I am on the east side of the river. Why so much crime? Look no further than who is in the state capital. The cops hate the way their hands are tied by those people. The jail has a revolving door. I didn't know Yreka was like that. "Homeless" = crime.
I moved here from the Bay Area (like many others) and it is visibly safer than the East Bay. Overall, a very good, even handed video. Thanks!
Great video, my great uncle Olaf was a lumberjack in the town of Shasta. We visited him in the early 70s. So seeing the town now, was a real treat.😊
