Thanks for making the video. I was born in Newport in 1963, a navy brat. But we left when I was only a few years old, and have never been back. It was no nice to see my hometown again. Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
My relative built the Joseph Reynolds’s house starting in 1698 and finishing in 1700. Thanks for showing it and commenting on it and the history-Marquis de Lafayette had a special room there and it is the oldest 3 story wooden building in Rhode Island. Really liked the video!
You do a fantastic job of traveling and explaining your itinerary. Thank you for sharing this wonderful little town of Bristol Rhoad Island. Great job and I'll keep watching.
I am still fascinated by Rhode Island, and this vlog. This was one of the best of this channel, almost on par with the ones from the deserted Mississippi small towns. amazing adventure you two are on. Be well.
As always some great stuff. Joe...Nic please keep up your wonderful shows. Whenever I view them you all make me feel like I'm next to you. I love your style.
This is just a tremendous video. A fun fact about Newport - The 60's singing group the Cowsills lived in Halidon Hall one of the big mansions in Newport. Keep up the great work Joe and Nic! I find your videos very interesting.
That house in Westerly was going for $689k and it was built in 1870. It sounds about right for the East Coast, considering there is a ton of history up in those areas. I also noticed on the Babcock house that it looks like the original section of the home may have been the smaller side on the left and the right side was likely built later on as an addition. I've seen that kind of thing happen with houses, especially around where I grew up.
All of RI is more expensive than you would expect. Its a very blue collar/conservative (by East Coast Standards) area between big liberal cities in CT/NY and MA. But this video went through the most expensive areas of the state -- and the most desired. Easy access to the waterfront and the interstate.
The mansions along the coast are amazing! The Astors and Vanderbilt mansions are stunning! I visited there and if anyone loves the guilded age, thats the place to go!!!!!!
I agree. I mentioned it in my comment someplace on here. Newport is amazing. It can get crowded with tourists in the summer, and parking is impossible!
@@michaelbdoherty Joe doesn't need 'me' to defend him but I don't think his channel has ever been about going where the tourists go. With his knowledge of architecture I think he would have found it interesting, though
If you could do 3 hours just about Bristol, you could probably do 10 hours just about Newport. I don't know if they counted all the servicemen and families in the 1960 Newport census, but there were thousands stationed there at the time at the Naval Base. I volunteered at the Tennis Hall of Fame for years, on Bellevue, and if you had gone down that road you would have seen all the "cottages" like The Breakers, The Elms, etc. I even volunteered for a while at Belcourt Castle, part of the Vanderbilt family's holdings. If you keep going you'll come up on Ocean Drive, where many newer mansions (many celebrities, such as Judge Judy) buy homes overlooking the ocean.
Its funny i lived most of my life in RI, growing up in Hope Valley and still couldn't tell you a fraction of the states history other than common knowledge. There is so much history in that state ranging from political to celebrities its crazy, not a boring state lol.
@@shredhead76 Me neither and I went to URI and also to Johnson & Wales for travel and tourism. I'll be 65 soon and just go off the stuff I remember. I'm surprised they never made us take a RI History class because there's so much I don't know, either!
yeah, I sorta expected them to do the "Walk" along the cottages. But to be fair.. that is what EVERYONE who visits Newport does. (the path along the back/waterside is public access, and popular for hiking and biking)
Long time viewer first time comenting, It's funny that Americans think 200 years is old,it is 4 people ago to put it in perspective. Keep up the good work and thank you for taking us along for the ride, greetings from Norway
Yeay Joe! You pronounced PAW-ca-tuk flawlessly! Yes, Pawcatuck is just as how you pronounced it, but if you go to one of the major cities in RI, Pawtucket, it's pronounced PaTUCKet. The W is silent and most people get it wrong. I just have to give a huge shout-out to our (I'm in VA now) libraries in RI (I may be biased as I worked in one for years) Thanks for pointing out the one in Westerly. Most are beautiful like that. And the BIG plus is that they're all connected. As you pointed out, Westerly is at the southwest point in RI, but if you lived in the northern-most city, Woonsocket, you could order your favorite book on line and they'll deliver it up there, or to any branch near where you live.
Three more beautiful cities I’d love to visit. I appreciate all of the history of the cities and the famous and infamous inhabitants. Some true architectural gems and wonderful homes. I love how close the states are. We got to to see three states in this video. Appreciate and enjoy these videos so much!
OMG ! Joe, when you were driving thru Npt guess you didnt hear me scream no no turn right! LOL There was SO much that you missed! Hope that you get to come back some day because there is so much more to see in the OCEAN STATE. love from Portsmouth RI❤
You can definitely see a lot of Byzantine influence in Bristol, especially in some of the architecture and the colorful bricks they used. Don’t they also have the longest continuous running fireworks celebration in the United States? People forget or just don’t know how historical RI is and how old many of the buildings and buildings are as well as how well they are kept…. Also you can see so much English influence with how close the buildings are to each other and how narrow the streets are. $689,000 for the house in Westerly.
Newport is a town of wealthy retirees and singles, and working class families employed in service jobs. There's not much of a middle class - which is shown in the income/poverty numbers. Bristol has many more middle-upper middle class family households. Both lovely towns!
The scenes of Bristol look pretty much the same as they did when I left it for Hawaii. I lived in Bristol from 1995 until my departure from there for HI in 2013. It was wonderful seeing the town via this video. I called Bristol home for 18 years. I keep telling myself I need to get back to Bristol before I get too much older. I still have this craving for a couple slices of pizza strips from the (now-gone) Wood Street Bakery that can't be satisfied with just any pizza. If you're not familiar with "RI red strips", well, it's an Ocean State thing. Like clam cakes, Autocrat coffee milk, and "cabinets" from Delekta's Pharmacy up the road from Bristol in Warren, they're all RI things. One area of Bristol that was not visited in this video is an area known as Poppasquasch Point. It's a private peninsula that extends into Narragansett Bay that's home to many magnificent estates. Oscar-winning Anthony Quinn lived on Poppasquash Point during the last years of his life (he died in 2001) and he was buried on the grounds of his estate. As I mentioned, it is a private area that (at least when I lived in Bristol) was access-controlled by guards who sat by the gate into the peninsula. It's a really beautiful area, with mega-mansions, all possessing spectacular views of Narragansett Bay, Bristol Harbor, or Mount Hope Bay. While I technically wasn't supposed to be on the point, not being a resident there, (I actually lived on Mount Hope Avenue) the guards who controlled the access to the point would turn a blind eye to me and let me run out to the end of the point and back, during my marathon training days. It was on Poppasquash Point, as well as the nearby Colt State Park, and the East Bay Bike Path, where I trained and got my running miles in. Enough so, to where I qualified for the Boston Marathon six times. I have many good memories of Bristol. Along with Hawaii and Lincoln Park in Chicago, it's one of the better places I've ever called home in my life.
I lived in Newport back in the 50’s. We lived next door to where the Kennedy’s had their wedding reception, when they had it too. I used to play in the park where the Stone Mill is. I returned there on a road trip back in 2005. Loved seeing my history. You should have shown the Stone Mill, which is really a very old structure.
The house on Summer St in Westerly is marked down by 36,ooo and is listed for 689,000. The kitchen seems to be updated to state of the art. However, 2 of the baths are still in the 50 to 60 style with gold and green titles. The interior is beautiful as are the grounds. There is a shop in the back yard. For that area, I'd say it's worth what they are asking. BTW, I sure enjoyed this video. Has anyone mentioned that the sound when you're inside car isn't loud enough?. Big difference between the inside and out.
The Reynolds House on Hope St. in Bristol was a B & B for a few years. My husband & I stayed there a few times. While renovating, the owners found a Revolutionary War cannonball embedded in the wall. They had it on display on the sitting room windowsill.
Live in Bristol UK with a population of nearly half a million. I love the city for its vibrancy diversity and fantastic culture shops and of course its historic dockside where the first cross Atlantic passenger stream ship SS Great Britain was built. Bristol Rhode Island looks pretty cool also 😊
I’m so glad you showed the Synagogue as I am Jewish. I’ve visited the synagogue. It would be interesting if you also did the religious breakdown of the cities and towns. My favorite area in Newport to eat is Bowen’s Wharf area. New England is known for fried whole belly clams.
Just to let you know, Bristol (the first town highlighted in the video) also has a tiny synagogue that's been in existence since 1900. It's the United Brothers Synagogue, located on High Street.
I've been to Newport so many times and gone by the synagogue but never stopped in. I was usually hurrying to my volunteer job at the ITHOF. I live in VA now and always wished I'd gone in. Joe didn't go to Bowen's Wharf, Bannister's Wharf or The Brick Marketplace, (The Black Pearl!) Too touristy, I imagine.
Great videos! Joe i don't think you know how amusing you are! It is fun as a native New England coast guy to hear the amazement of the ages of our homes and buildings though. My town was incorporated in 1623.I am 60 and until 10 years ago never lived in a house less than 200 yrs old. Before my current "new" 40 yr old condo,my last house was built in 1671!

We have been up/down Narragansett Bay, both East and West passage. We docked at Point Judith due to 12, 15 ft seas coming out of West Passage, and took refuge in the point. Good vid, thanks for taking us along.
I so enjoy your vlogs. What I missed in this one, when you both review the food from a local restaurant, pub or tavern. I married into a family whose ancestors arrived on the second ship, The Fortune, to land on the Eastern Seaboard in the 1600's and what has been pounded into my head by my late father-in-law is how the seafood from the Eastern Seaboard is far!!! better than that of the west coast out here in CA🤣. Thank you for inviting us all on your trips.
I went to a catholic school and attended mass in a similar church, twice a week for many years. I never really thought much of it until now, much older, appreciating the unique architecture. Thanks for doing the leg work and documenting these places

Stumbling across your channel got me through Covid recently and now I’m a fan! Shared this video with my wife yesterday who is a former Rhode Islander and she enjoyed it too. Although she wished there was a little more featured on her hometown of Westerly, she completely understands about the traffic there this time of year! The locals are always happy when Labor Day passes and they can get around a little easier. As a lifelong Masshole, I’m looking forward to your next video!
I loved RI. I could drive through the state in 20 minutes. I lived in New England, went to school and never heard anything about that "Peculiar Institution" called slavery. Thank goodness!
Since you're such a fan of pubs and bars, I absolutely suggest taking a road trip through Ireland. I'm from Colorado and road-tripped Ireland last year. Putting nearly 1,000km on the rental car, I visited Belfast, Derry, Armagh, Tullamore, Kilkenny, Waterford, New Ross, and of course, Dublin. Such an amazingly beautiful countryside, the friendliest people on Earth, and a total blast. If you ever decide to do this an need an American guide, I'm always down for another trip. I'll be making Ireland part of my international rotation ever few years for sure. One trip is not enough.
Greetings from Ireland! Glad you had such a great time . Next time try Cork , Kerry in the SW of country and Donegal in NW ... Been to Boulder, CO a few times as a sidetrip from Denver and thought it was a place I would love to have gone to college. Went skiing wit ha friend from UC on the gentler slopes
Joe & Nic, There is much history in R.I. & everry New England State & Village. So great to see again & how it has been maintained. In my youth we would go to Block Island on the Ferry Boat & spend the day. It has the longest bar n the world & then they had a fire & rebuilt but the bar was not as long. I had heard the Harborside Inn burned, a historic Inn 1879. They had to tear it down. Ouch. Just last week. The Island was always a great place to go & get a fresh ice cream cone. Back then in Summer there were 500+people living on the island. When Fall was coming the Population went way down. See'n a lot of memories in your New England Travels. Thanks. Safe Tavels. Glad your not in Florida now with the hurricane hit'n there. Saw on TV Cedar Keys to be hit good & up & down the West Upper Coast. Calling for upto 16 foot surges. Great memories living in Central Florida. I would not live in that State today. Way to many people. 27 million toilets flushing🚽💩☁☁☁ 24/7 will surley sink that State. Safe Travels. always, Tommy🤠
Oh, the Harborside Inn burned down, I had no idea! So sad. If Joe comes back to RI it would be cool if he took the ferry from Galilee (another good idea to film) and went out there. Praying for all the people in Florida after the hurricane. Back when I was a kid we'd take the ferry, rent bikes and ride all around the island. Good memories!
Thanks for a great job showcasing our state.. You would have needed another week just to scratch the surface of our history. Wish we could have met for coffee..
Oh my goodness Joe you could easily do a whole video or a 2 part on Newport RI.. but I know you guys have to move on..so much history there to cover.. well maybe you could hit it again and show more on a future northeast tour 🙂😊
I just discovered your channel and I love your commentary of the states and regions of the USA. Bringe watching your videos this weekend. You and your wife have a wonderful weekend.
I maybe mistaken, but I believe the population may have decreased in part to the Newport Naval Station trimming of services. It began in 1952 and has slowly lost and shifted it's responsibilities to other ports along the coast. The street you were riding along in Newport was made of what is referred to as cobblestone, original and repaired as it becomes unseated there. Great video of the Ocean State, a stark contrast to some of your other stops along the way, however an enjoyable one for your viewers. Thanks
Finally getting caught up on your great informative videos. Again, love the statistics and demographics. Your videos are well paced and we really enjoy them.
Chafee introduced the legislation and was successful in having it become part of Federal Rules and Regulations. It states in Section 353(b): “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a red, white, and blue center line in the Main Street of Bristol, Rhode Island, shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of Section 3B-a of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices of the Department of Transportation." Since 1996, thanks to the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995, Bristol’s patriotic stripes have remained year round.
Rhode Island is a true gem of America. Small, but it shines brighter than most places.

Great video, as always. Beautiful cities, so much history there, and wonderful architecture. It was great to see the old lighthouse. Ruth Buzzi was an amazing actress. The cat was gorgeous, very friendly, and happy to say hello !! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic, always enjoyable.😊💚
Many thanks, CL!
Thanks for making the video. I was born in Newport in 1963, a navy brat. But we left when I was only a few years old, and have never been back. It was no nice to see my hometown again. Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
I was born in westerly Rhode Island 1962.
My relative built the Joseph Reynolds’s house starting in 1698 and finishing in 1700. Thanks for showing it and commenting on it and the history-Marquis de Lafayette had a special room there and it is the oldest 3 story wooden building in Rhode Island. Really liked the video!
Absolutely beautiful home. I would love to have seen the inside.
You do a fantastic job of traveling and explaining your itinerary. Thank you for sharing this wonderful little town of Bristol Rhoad Island. Great job and I'll keep watching.
Wow, this is the most beautiful place in our great country ❤️
So much history and architecture to experience, thank you for taking us there.
Thank you from a native Rhode Islander! Please come and visit us sometime….we have really good restaurants, too!
I am still fascinated by Rhode Island, and this vlog. This was one of the best of this channel, almost on par with the ones from the deserted Mississippi small towns. amazing adventure you two are on. Be well.
Lovely area, had never seen too much of Rhode Island, thanks for taking us into St. Mary's,. Your videos and info have been really fun, thank you.
I was born and raised in Westerly .
I visited there and if anyone loves the guilded age, thats the place to go!!!!!!
agreed, I'm surprised he didn't visit or at least mention the mansions.
I agree. I mentioned it in my comment someplace on here. Newport is amazing. It can get crowded with tourists in the summer, and parking is impossible!
Yeah seriously??? How do you go to Newport and not visit the mansions and Ocean Dr.??
@@michaelbdoherty Joe doesn't need 'me' to defend him but I don't think his channel has ever been about going where the tourists go. With his knowledge of architecture I think he would have found it interesting, though
My mother lived in the Vanderbilt mansion while my dad was at sea during WWII. It was used for Navy housing at that time.
Absolutely true. It would take hours to catalogue just the historic homes. There are so many! 👍
Used to bike ride the drive, or my grandparents and I drove it to spend time by the water.
yeah, I sorta expected them to do the "Walk" along the cottages.
I agree. :)
Yes, he said the fireworks celebration starts sometime in June. Can't remember the exact date.
Newport is a town of wealthy retirees and singles, and working class families employed in service jobs. There's not much of a middle class - which is shown in the income/poverty numbers. Bristol has many more middle-upper middle class family households. Both lovely towns!
💯
Along with Hawaii and Lincoln Park in Chicago, it's one of the better places I've ever called home in my life.
thanks for sharing some history
Thank you SO MUCH! for all your history I could add my 2 cents but I want your post to stand alone. Great job! You really nailed the RI places!
I lived in Barrington, RI from 1969 till 1979. What a great place to grow up in. So much history.
If you ever get the chance stop at the Ocean Mist restaurant in Matunuck. Great seafood and a great view of the ocean and the beer is good also.
Thank you for taking us along on your travels.❤.
Thanks for the tour and a brief history of the east coast towns in Rhode Island. It was fun watching your video.
Many Portuguese immigrants lived in Rhode Island. I talked to a guy who had left RI because his work was shut down in winter.
The Reynolds House on Hope St. in Bristol was a B & B for a few years. My husband & I stayed there a few times. While renovating, the owners found a Revolutionary War cannonball embedded in the wall. They had it on display on the sitting room windowsill.
Loved the history of RI... Thanks for sharing Joe
We were just there yesterday in Newport on our NE road trip. Loved it!!
🤗 Joe this is your best cat interaction 😽
After a very long time of only seeing your photos on FB, this is my first video. Loved it! I'll definitely be back for more!
Live in Bristol UK with a population of nearly half a million. I love the city for its vibrancy diversity and fantastic culture shops and of course its historic dockside where the first cross Atlantic passenger stream ship SS Great Britain was built.
Bristol Rhode Island looks pretty cool also 😊
Let us know when you make it over to Americal 😀
I was born in Bristol UK….great to have a namesake in the US so beautiful.
Wow! Such amazing history there! I played a gig in RI years ago, and was only able to sight see for a few hours. I need to get back there and explore.
You should!
@@rialohaguy I wish he would show more synagogues in the towns he visits.
Once again a great video full of interesting sights . Truly enjoy - thanks
Great video Joe! Really happy you got to see beyond Providence. You packed alot into the video. Watching you regularly ik you appreciated the history of everything. Loved seeing my city Newport on there.
This must be the prettiest , most well - kept town I have seen in your videos ! ❤❤❤ . Lovely ( and very expensive ) architecture , very New England ….
Heading up there soon. Love the New England coast.
enjoying the tour from my living room in London. beautiful and fascinating place! English place names galore! ☺
Hello! I've watched many of your videos and enjoy the info that you give. I love it that you are a cat lover. Nice of you to give the yellow cat some head scratches. It seemed to appreciate it. Be safe on your road trips. Waiting to see your MA video.
I'm surprised he skipped over Mass. He went to every other NE state except for Connecticut (yet). I don't understand the reasoning behind as Mass is the historical and cultural capital of New England.
@@GroceryBagAngler that was odd. I used to live in MA. Just wanted to see which cities he'd go through. A lot of history there...especially Boston.
We visit Plymouth and Boston in the next video.
Great video I passed you waking by but did not want to interrupt you! I hope you make it out to Ocean Drive/Brenton Point. Its is several miles of state park along the ocean. Also the Cliff Walk is a must see as well. Have fun and safe travels!
Oh the Cliff Walk is great!
Newport is real old history and money, well preserved! Thank you!
Beautifully presented material, full of knowledge of history and american culture. It gives me a huge panoramic view of this fascinating country. Each state is different, and sometimes, I have a feeling I'm visiting several countries in one hour. Thank you so much🥰❤👏🇨🇦🇵🇱
Greetings from Cape Cod MA and welcome to the beautiful region of New England
Must see Newport on my bucket list for me after watching this episode!!!
Awesome 👏
I'm a rhode islander. Westerly is a beautiful place, lots of nice restaurants and scenery. Alot of history in that area. There are also a lot of very nice homes. Elm St is a street that is absolutely beautiful with the houses...
I've enjoyed listening and watching!
Enjoyed the video. Surprised you did not mention the huge historic mansions in Newport. Rhode Island state animal is the clam. But I know you can't go or show everything. Rhode Island is a fun place to visit. Hope you swing by Connecticut where I live. Another fun video!
We have been up/down Narragansett Bay, both East and West passage. We docked at Point Judith due to 12, 15 ft seas coming out of West Passage, and took refuge in the point. Good vid, thanks for taking us along.
Glad you were safe!
I love all this History. I never knew anything about Rhode island. I got my paper map out.
I went to a catholic school and attended mass in a similar church, twice a week for many years. I never really thought much of it until now, much older, appreciating the unique architecture. Thanks for doing the leg work and documenting these places
One state I haven’t visited and would like to one day, the water looks so beautiful and inviting.
Great Rhode Island .. NEWPORT RI 💎🩵💎🩵💎
I'm following you since the beginning and you do a great job! Many documentations on TV could learn from you....
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video I'm in the UK and was always intrigued about Bangor as King based the town of Derry from IT on his home town. You didnt see any clowns peeping out of drains did you haha
Glad to see Rhode Island getting some attention!
Thank you again for the video I missed my hometown so much thank you
Really nice to the replica of Magellan's ship, Nao Trinidad in Bristol Harbour when you filmed.
Reminded me of the Tall Ships back in the 1970's
I loved RI. I could drive through the state in 20 minutes. I lived in New England, went to school and never heard anything about that "Peculiar Institution" called slavery. Thank goodness!
I'm originally from Portsmouth RI and in Gatlinburg TN Smoky Mountains Park now .. Miss my Hometown 🏞️🌄🐻
We hope to some day!
Another super great video. Thanks for all your traveling. I love seeing the US thru your videos.🙂👍❤🙏 prayer for u a safe journey!
Thanks for a great job showcasing our state.. You would have needed another week just to scratch the surface of our history. Wish we could have met for coffee..
You're right. In time, we'll return and do more videos, including a video of Newport only.
You made very interesing videos, thanks for taking us along.
I like the White Horse Tavern, I love the old Dutch barn style building.
They call it Dutch Colonial but in reality it's English.
Oh my goodness Joe you could easily do a whole video or a 2 part on Newport RI.. but I know you guys have to move on..so much history there to cover.. well maybe you could hit it again and show more on a future northeast tour 🙂😊
Thanks for another great video so much history in these towns some good and some not so good.
I just discovered your channel and I love your commentary of the states and regions of the USA. Bringe watching your videos this weekend. You and your wife have a wonderful weekend.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks
Yup. That's exactly what it was 💯🎯
A Spanish Galeon, beautiful state & friendly cat. Best video yet.😉👍
Newport was also home to the Americas Cup until lost in 1983 to the Australians.
Finally getting caught up on your great informative videos. Again, love the statistics and demographics. Your videos are well paced and we really enjoy them.
Much appreciated! 👍😀
Cool middle lines in Bristol "Red, White & Blue" 🙌
Chafee introduced the legislation and was successful in having it become part of Federal Rules and Regulations. It states in Section 353(b): “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a red, white, and blue center line in the Main Street of Bristol, Rhode Island, shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of Section 3B-a of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices of the Department of Transportation." Since 1996, thanks to the National Highway System Designation Act of 1995, Bristol’s patriotic stripes have remained year round.
