I have not been to Marfa since 1991 when my grandmother passed on and I flew to El Paso and drove 3hrs. to her funeral. Marfa was my second home when I was a kid. I would go there every summer by train with my cousin Johnny to visit my grandmother. We had an aunt who lived across the street from the Train Station. and we would just walk to her gorgeous home. I loved her house it had big porch out in front. Then she would take us to my grandmother's house. Her house was next to a cemetery where it was next to the drive in. When my cousins and I would walk threw the cemetery at night and watch movies from the cemetery. That was scary and fun at the same time. I know my cousins that lived there all moved to the surrounding cities. When they came to visit in Los Angeles, they could not believe how big it was and all the people. I remember they always wanted to go back home. I still love Marfa, Texas. I have great memories! I miss it.
Best line from the movie Giant was when Liz Taylor told Jimmy Dean "money isnt everything in life" to which he replied "if you aint got it, it is!"..............

Really enjoyable story. Thank you! I was a "resident" of Marfa for a month in 1974 (50 years ago), working for the railroad. I knew the job at Marfa was temporary and thought I would be there maybe a couple of months but November was all. In those days Marfa was strictly a ranching community. The "enlightened" sorts had not yet discovered the place. My wife and I stayed in a duplex less than a half a block from the courthouse. The Paisano Hotel was open. As I recall, the restaurant in the hotel was closed at that time. A few years prior to working in Marfa I had stopped in town and the restaurant in the hotel was open at that time. Very cold nights in Marfa for that November. Every night that month was below freezing save for one night (Marfa's elevation is 4,698 feet). There was one snowfall that November, very peculiar, too. The climate is so dry that by the next afternoon all traces of snow were gone. Where snow had been there was dust underneath. When the snow disappeared so did any moisture associated with the snow. The theater shown in the video was open a night or two a week back then and we saw Blazing Saddles which was well past the time when it was shown in larger venues.
My Grandfather and Grandmother raised 3 boys and 4 girls. All her boys went into the Military, my uncle Lalo was a WWII Veteran, and my uncle Manuel was a Korean War Veteran, and my father is a Korean War Veteran. My father is the only one living at 93 years old. He was the baby in the family. Most of the children moved to Los Angeles, in the 1950's after they got married. Only one daughter stayed in Marfa. She had a beautiful home, and it was across the street from the Train Station. OMG I remember she had high ceilings I believe it is still there and has a big porch in front. Loved that house. Great Memories! I am starting to get teary eyed.
I believe it was in 2002 or 2003 I was driving a flatbed tractor trailer over the road. I had left El Paso, Texas very early in the morning and had a delivery to make in a small town along Highway 90 Southeast of Marfa, Texas. I had traveled by Marfa and was several miles out of town when looking south I noticed 3 slightly pulsing lights in the sky very close to the horizon. I had heard of the Marfa lights and my first reaction you've got to kidding me! It can't be! So I pulled my truck to a stop and I proceeded to watch the three lights. One of the lights disappeared but the other two were clearly visible with the light on the left slightly higher. As I watched the light on the left abruptly moved upwards and off to the left. Both remained stationary and I watched them for several more minutes. I am pretty sure they were indeed the Marfa lights and I added it to the list of strange things you see while driving across the country every day. I love your videos Joe and Nic but I think in this case I would have settles for a burger and fries at the local burger joint.
I remember on NBC they had a story about the Marfa Lights. It was one of those Mysterious shows on NBC. They had it on every week. I cannot remember the name of the show. Sorry I am 68 years old and sometimes my Lights are not on upstairs. 😂😂😂
@@thomasfranco5997 I am 71 and my lights don't reach all the way to the bottom of the well either. I also remember that on that trip I delivered near an Air Force base or airport. I am not sure where it was exactly. but it was quite aways from Marfa. Strange experience.
We went to Marfa to see the lights at night. My husband gave up and went to the car. As my son and I were about to leave, we saw them. Patience!! We were at the viewing area. I’m a believer!!
Marfa was home to Marfa Army Air Field which served as a training facility for several thousand pilots during World War II, including the American actor Robert Sterling, before closing in 1945. The base was also used as the training ground for many of the United States Army's chemical mortar battalions. It has long been abandon. And BTW, I'm sure not many locals can afford to eat at that restaurant based on median income.
My grandfather trained at Marfa AAF for WWII. The tarmac, runways, foundations, etc are still visible on Google Earth, and I was really surprised to seem them in Flight Simulator 2020.
Ft. D.A. Russell was the name of the military base and there were German prisoners of war kept there too. My parents were born there in the 1930's and told many stories about it.
I recently turned 60 and I am in good shape. My wife and I did a 9 hour drive in a new SUV that was comfortable to a resort for a fun birthday weekend. She's the same age. After we drove home the 9 hours, we both commented on how long drives are not as enjoyable at our age. So, I applaud both of you for all the miles you both drive to video these towns. Not to mention all the hotels and all the eating out. Traveling for a weekend is still fun. But, I don't know how you guys and say rockstars who tour or professional athletes do it day in and day out for years. Maybe you should do a video on just how you plan, pack and do the traveling to make these videos. Maybe theres some tips others may find helpful.

We have been to Marfa many times. Once we each took glider rides out at the local airport. It was a blast. The pilot Bert has lived in Marfa many years. He said that Marfa is landlocked by very large ranches and essentially cannot grow beyond its limits. I love to photograph old buildings and there are plenty here and in Valentine which is 25 miles west of Marfa.
If you haven’t seen it, you really need to watch the movie Fandango (one of Kevin Costner’s firsts). There’s a scene where they get stuck in Marfa overnight, and the local gas station attendant tells them “better hurry if you want supper. Dairy Queen closes at 8:00.” Marfa has changed a lot since then.
I really like that art out in the open and not behind doors which can seem precious. It can raise questions or a smile or you can take or leave it. But it provokes a response and engagement.
Fascinating! This would be on my bucket list. You asked if the various pieces are art. I think so because the artist is seeing beauty in everyday objects and placing them in a way that highlights their beauty of both form and function. I think that garage door with a padlock is a portal to another dimension (just kidding). But it might be! Yes, that is definitely an outrageous dinner tab, but I am glad that the food was good. The interior lobby of that hotel is spectacular! Another fascinating Saturday morning excursion! Thank you!

It is. It's a state with many huge, fast growing cities surrounded by a sea of nearly abandoned towns. The contrast as you drive around is always striking.
During a visit a couple of years ago that I loved is the small hometown atmosphere! I walked around the city and neighborhood. There were children toys out front yard and the residents not worried about theft. A young girl was dropped off by school bus and she walked home. Great little out of the way sandwich shops and more. Well worth the visit!. The Hotel Pasisano is a great place to stay!

I'm a former resident of Marfa loved my sleepy town because when I was growing up the locals all knew each other .Marfa when Judd came around changed the makeup of our hometown and real estate skyrocketed so while it has helped it has also hurt it. I sure miss the old town!
Hi Joey & Nic, love your work, as always- have to get my fix ! really like MARFA ! love the QUIRKY ! When you eat- I always get the munchies ! LOL 😋 Thank you so much for all the work U2 do. Cheers from Sth Australia.
Observations : weather-beaten , washboard but wide Texas streets . The state of Texas county courthouse on the town square . At 2:58 the young people leave the grinding poverty but some come back after establishing themselves . The restaurant bill is probably in the tourist or gringo prices . The secret to LS success, most people have a knowledge of certain spots in NYC , LA or even Chicago but these hometowns small and plentiful are unknown to all except those who live there . Always enjoy Nicole pepper on the salt of the earth LS / Joe . Keep them coming for us armchair tourists . Happy Trails !
I spent a week in Alpine, Marfa and Presidio last November and saw the lights twice while there. My first though was that the lights were head lights until a red orb appeared, floated downward and dissipated. If you have never been to Marfa it is so remote its 93 miles to the nearest Walmart.
Been to Marfa a few times. Don’t think I could spend more than a day there. Just not that much to do. You’d be close enough to Big Bend to make a day trip. That’s my suggestion.

Also where No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were filmed. Both extraordinary movies. DDL won an Oscar for that performance for best actor.
Marfa is a different down that has a lot of extremes. It is an unusual mixture of old/conservative and new/liberal. Considering its extreme isolated location and very small population, it has many things you only find in large cities such high end restaurants with world class chefs. It also has wine and cheese sources you normally find only in large cities. As for art, it has one of the largest collections of large scale works of contemporary art in the world (see, The Chinati Foundation). It is definitely worth the trip if you want to experience a culture and lifestyle you will find difficult to find anywhere. This is why tourists, movie makers, and advertising companies are a constant stream of revenue for the city. BTW, the Marfa Lights have been explained. It is an unusual/rare atmospheric condition that causes any light (including car lights) to form as a orb on the horizon/near the surface and exhibit the characteristics we see today. In short, it is a special type of mirage that forms near the surface that depend on specific weather conditions. That being said, it is still worth the effort to go see them since they are rarely seen anywhere in the world.
Been there and love it! Only one of the few places you can go and carry in the courthouse which out getting into trouble! You can even go all the way to the top of the courthouse and see the whole town!! 😎👍👍👍
My grandpa went to school at Blackwell, and he would tell us stories about how they were not allowed to speak Spanish, and were taught not to speak Spanish. He passed away last year, so we took a trip to Marfa to visit the school and found photos of him displayed in the museum! Thank you for covering that important part of Marfa history. ❤️
Went to Marfa about 2015 where we rented our first vrbo house. As you were driving around the neighborhood close to downtown I know you passed by the house. 🤣 but several looked like it. Wouldn't mind going back. It's an interesting place. But next time I might stay in Ft. Davis. Pretty town.
4:40 Dude! Surf's up in West Texas! 😎 I'm not sure that "art" is the category where most of these creations fall, but they're certainly entertaining! Anyway, thanks for sharing your examination of this interesting little town.
I bet that ribeye was awesome, that puppy look delicious, I didn't see many potatoes there that was kind of surprising, but you might have already broke into those, either way that made me hungry Joe dog gone, at courthouse was pretty doggone awesome too superb architecture for back in the day, I found it quite amazing nothing but prairie in three buildings there that old picture. Anyway thanks for another great video y'all. From the map I was trying to figure out how far it was to Roswell from there, they just recently had one heck of a rainstorm.
The highlight of this episode for me was hearing Mike Nesmith singing "Papa Gene's Blues" at the Giant installation. Re: The Hotel St. George...what kind of architecture would you call that? An interesting juxtaposition with the courthouse just down the street.
The picture of the courthouse from the 1800s is at 15:30. (Sorry to use your comment section as a reminder but I live in Alpine and I have to get a copy. Fantastic. Thanks

The roads of Texas were terrible highway 90 from El Paso to cold springs. 900 miles. I went clear to the top of that court house. The view was incredible. The Marfa lights were amazing.

I'm a former resident of Marfa loved my sleepy town because when I was growing up the locals all knew each other .Marfa when Judd came around changed the makeup of our hometown and real estate skyrocketed so while it has helped it has also hurt it. I sure miss the old town!
My grandparents lived there and spent the 60's and 70's there, miss Marfa
Loved passing through Marfa on my way to Big Bend years ago. I don’t remember the public art, I just liked the vibe.
Thank you, Joe and Nic's Road trip.
Absolutely!!
Great job! Hi Nic 👋. Love all the information and town history you provide!! Thank you.
17:15 love the spiral stairs!
at about 24:03 that sculpture casts a shadow that brings to mind the shadow of an elephant or mammoth. Coindince??? We'll never know. Such is ART!
You have a great deal of architectural knowledge! It’s interesting to know about these unusual buildings.
Lots of contrasts, thank you!
Hi Joey & Nic, love your work, as always- have to get my fix ! really like MARFA ! love the QUIRKY ! When you eat- I always get the munchies ! LOL 😋 Thank you so much for all the work U2 do. Cheers from Sth Australia.
Thank you, Cherie!!!
Thank you, James!!
Wow! $252! I could feed myself for a month on that. I’m impressed that $60 of it was for drinks! 😂
An awesome video! A very interesting and unique town! Lovely hotels! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic.😊💚
@@catlover614 Thanks, CL!!
I spent a week in Alpine, Marfa and Presidio last November and saw the lights twice while there. My first though was that the lights were head lights until a red orb appeared, floated downward and dissipated. If you have never been to Marfa it is so remote its 93 miles to the nearest Walmart.
Love how you showcase the city’s character so well.
Thanks Nic and Joe very educational video beautiful art gallery stay positive stay safe.
Been to Marfa a few times. Don’t think I could spend more than a day there. Just not that much to do. You’d be close enough to Big Bend to make a day trip. That’s my suggestion.
Great episode. Interesting town for sure. I wish the lights would've shown for you. Thanks so much.
I believe the Palace Theatre was where the premier of the movie “Giant” was shown.
Somebody likes Makers Mark!
😂😂😂😂
Yep. Added about $60 to the total bill.
@@skeletor9121 Looks like it added 120 otherwise the numbers don't add up. First $60 for the 6 drinks and then 6 individual up-charges for them being doubles I think.
More than half the bill was for the Maker's Mark.
@@wafarris >Yeah, if you're a cowboy comin to town lookin for a saloon you'd better not be comin too thirsty! Steak & salmon AND cake was $114, and the whiskey alone was $120.!
One of the best , soulful, talented Songwriters / Singer & Bad Ass Cowboy Guitar Players is from this area i believe - I do know he mentions Marfa in his music - One of the best - Joe Ely
The Marfa lights are similar to the Hornet spook light near Joplin Missouri.
Another great video. Joe the Northwest quadrant of Marfa has beautiful homes. Jetts Grill in the Paisano has really good food also. As I lived in Ft. Davis and Alpine Ive seen Marfa Lights several times. Some say they are due to a phenomenon caused by sulphur gas. Thanks for another outstanding video of my old home area of Texas!👍✌️
Marfa looks more like California than Texas
Enjoyed the video. In my experience, November is actually peak tourist season for many west TX towns due to the heat during summer.
Anothe great video, Joe and Nicole. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. By the way, I really enjoyed your interview with "Travel With a Wiseguy", Joe. Lots of interesting insight on your adventures.
Also where No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were filmed. Both extraordinary movies. DDL won an Oscar for that performance for best actor.
It was nice to hear them playing Michael Nesmith out there in the desert
Gives credence to the term "starving artists" 😂
The movie Giant is one of my favorite classics.
Love the old picture of the courthouse and jailhouse.
Bizzarro-world, for sure. Glad you shared it with us.
Wow! Expensive restaurant tab!
That check is insane. 🤪
Really enjoyed this episode. Marfa looks like a very cool place. Really liked those tall thin evergreen trees. And yea, that was a pricey dinner tab.
Heard of it ??😮
Marfa is a different down that has a lot of extremes.
Yep, we did that in the video. 😀
yes of course it was 250$ your reciept shoed like 12 makers mark or whatever whiskey! haha love the channel!
You are out of breath climbing all those stairs🤣…interesting little town. Thanks for the video
Guys!..I really enjoyed it
In my defense it was 5 flights!
And yes we went to see the marfa lights. Some were looking like headlights. Some didn't.
What an interesting place! I'm no expert but I think this sort of art is supposed to get you to think about it. And it does!
I agree!
4:40 Dude! Surf's up in West Texas! 😎
I'm not sure that "art" is the category where most of these creations fall, but they're certainly entertaining! It's obvious your dinner check went a little over the top because of those SIX double pours of Maker's Mark! Hope you two made it back to your hotel O.K.!
Anyway, thanks for sharing your examination of this interesting little town.
The bar was at the hotel, so all we had to do was walk to the room. 👍
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip Oh, O.K. That sounds much better!
Thanks for all your great videos!
I'm thinking you will eventually get to the Marfa Lights.
Thanks, David. Looks like Roswell is a 4 hour drive away, which is pretty close!
Love the deco style movie theater
The random roll up door is ABSOLUTELY CLUTCH 😂
HELLO JOE S AND NICOLE NICE VIDEO OF MARFA TX MERCI .......FABRICE
De rien
My Aunt was a waitress in the 1960s in a small Texas town. She said there were two menus, one for locals and one for people driving through.
Your title says it all. I’ve visited Marta several times and the answer is: BOTH !
I agree.
Best travel channel. Thank you!
Thank you!!
The highlight of this episode for me was hearing Mike Nesmith singing "Papa Gene's Blues" at the Giant installation. Re: The Hotel St. George...what kind of architecture would you call that? An interesting juxtaposition with the courthouse just down the street.
Subbed to your channel
I like watching thanks for
sharing keep the videos
coming stay safe exploring.
Thanks, will do!
The picture of the courthouse from the 1800s is at 15:30. (Sorry to use your comment section as a reminder but I live in Alpine and I have to get a copy. Fantastic. Thanks
You should feature the Mrs in future videos. A lot of us are thinking about road trips taken as a couple, and having the feminine perspective really adds a lot. Your bride has some really valuable things to say and this was one of the best videos I've seen that you've done.
I’d pay $60 for that steak dinner. It was huge and it all parts of the dish looked amazing.
I'm guessing the movie Marfa Girl would be impossible since no one that lives there is the appropriate age for the characters depicted.
October through March is the tourist season for the Big Bend region.
Looks like Joe drank an entire bottle of Maker's Mark. Yet, he's still standing and coherent.
He was making sure the makers mark was made properly 😵👍.
@@ishure8849 Right!!
Saw that. We need to pray for Joe. At his age or any age not good at all. Obviously not at peace.
@@trinity7776 To be honest, it was split between Joe and Nic. Nothing wrong with drinking on occasion. I just wouldn't pay $120 for a bottle of Maker's Mark...I'd opt for a couple of drinks at the bar and then buy myself a $60 bottle of Maker's Mark at the local package store. The Maker's Mark is what made their bill stratospheric.
@@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 Been watching them since the channel was Lord Spoda. Joe drinks at just about every lunch or dinner of the 40% alcohol by volume variety. Its not the cost to his wallet I am concerned about. 💀
I bicycled across Texas in 2013 we spent the night in Marfa. I did miss the semi art. The campground was interesting you could sleep in a teepee. El cosmico . The roads of Texas were terrible highway 90 from El Paso to cold springs. 900 miles. I went clear to the top of that court house. The view was incredible. The Marfa lights were amazing.
marfa is fun...but at 6 hours from even Austin...is really a one and done for most people...South Padre Island is about the same travel...and they have reasonable seafood...but the hotel paisano and their history is worth it...
$252 would buy approximately 38 Happy Meals at McDonald’s.
McDonald's is slop. You couldn't pay me to eat there!
@@randomrandomness8743 You say slop like it is a bad thing. 😆
Enjoy your Happy Meal! I would pay $252 to not have to eat at McDonald's
@@timothycovert5301 I wasn't commenting on my own dietary habits but pointing to the disparity between the price of a meal in the touristy mecca of Marfa versus a popular option out in the real world. Indeed, I rarely do fast food and would probably never pay the kind of premium encountered here unless I won a lotto jackpot.
THANKS JOE AND NIC ❤
