Texas chili can have beans. I have made chili from a paperback cookbook from 1965, by Walter Jetton, caterer to the LBJ ranch of President Lyndon B. Johnson. “Pegleg Shorty’s Chili” is nothing but lean beef, fat, water, and a list of spices. Immediately following in the book is “Shorty’s Chili Con Carne” which is simply the addition of BEANS. It seems that if beans were okay for LBJ’s caterer, they should be good enough for Texas. Leading a healthier lifestyle, I now make chili regularly, but with tons of beans because they’re one of the healthiest foods you can eat…certainly much more so than beef. LBJ died at age 65, no doubt a combination of stress and that heart-killer Texas cuisine.
@@klawiehrI think you’re confused. Yes, “con carne” means “with meat” … not “with beans.” The phrase Chili con carne would suggest that MEAT has been added to the basic chili recipe. Chili with beans would be called “Chili con Frijoles.” A Chili con Carne recipe can, but doesn’t necessarily include beans.
This is, I think, my favorite video so far. At my age, I will never get to see any of these places, so I really look forward to your videos, especially the ones about this area of Texas. I have always wanted to visit that part of Texas. These videos allow me to do that, thank you.

Cody and Kellie have a lot better videos of Terlingua, Texas (if you’re interested in more Terlingua, TX videos). They did all of the highlights, and none of the lowlights. Whereas this guy only ever does the lowlights of any given tiny town he goes to. Apparently there’s also a place to go glamping in the desert.

It’s not for everyone but it’s the most beautiful place on earth to me and I’ve been around this world many times. This is my all time favorite video you have ever or will ever do and I appreciate it so much. As I’m sure the fine people of Terlingua do as well. It’s a little quirky but so are we. I’ve been in every one of those shops, buildings , stores at one time or another. And a couple of them were regular at least once a week. The restaurant is great especially when you’re tired of cooking for yourself or eating your buddies cooking too. LoL and the bar there is a refreshing water hole on a hit day or anytime as we. Also have stayed in several of the different places you can rent but just for a weekend especially at the chili cook off. And if you have never been to it I suggest you give it a try you won’t be disappointed. My buddies and I call the last little town goatville LoL and Mayor Henry could serve as a model for some real life politicians in my opinion. LoL. Even though I’m gone right now I will never leave this place, eventually what’s left of me will be in that cemetery with my people. Terlingua was our "headquarters" when we explored the Big Bend country of Texas. Also, when we went to Presidio, we took the road that somewhat follows the Rio Grande. We went as far East as Langtry, Texas. I really like that part of Texas including Fort Davis, Alpine and the observatory.

This entire group of videos is literally my stomping ground. And my home is a little ways out of the town of Terlingua. It’s a great place and the weather is great for a guy with a lot of metal parts holding him together.
got a cabin and an rv out on some land on the Terlingua Ranch, go out there 5 times a year- we hardly ever go into town anymore too many people- love our peace and quiet and no people out on the property love it .

Hello from New Zealand. We did a boys trip through the US April 2023 and spent a night in Terlingua on our way from San Antonio to El Paso which was a highlight of the trip. The drive was magnificent with stunning scenery. We did et buzzed by a Border Patrol Chopper though. Love your videos, keep up the great work.
We found Terlingua by accident. We were rving cross country and needed a place to park our coach to visit Big Bend National Park and they have an awesome rv park in town. The food and hospitality around town was second to none. We will definitely stop back when we are in the area again.

I’ve been there. Drove past it going into BB. The scenery out there is unreal. It is well worth the 8.5 hour drive from the Houston area. Big Bend is off the chain cool!

I spent last winter in Terlingua and it’s definitely unique! It’s a shame you didn’t stay in a teepee or glass dome with Nicole to check out the beautiful night sky and then get a meal at Starlight Theater. I would have loved to have your review! The Day of the Dead festival at the cemetery is great! Everyone lights a candle at the graves and the locals bring food. People dress up, play music and dance. AND it’s free! The chili contest isn’t free. It’s quite pricey and unless you’re a judge you can’t partake of any chili. There are actually 2 contests. One is smaller and less “raunchy.” Terlingua is definitely an interesting place it has been discovered, which might not be a good thing.
Another big business was the gathering of creosote bush from the desert. Huge bundles would be tied to the back of burros. Packs of wild burros were very common in the area when we used to go there back in the 80's. If you do make it there you will see the ruins of very small adobe structures, smaller than most modern living rooms. That tiny structure usually housed an extended family. At night only the women slept in the house, the men slept outdoors, often on the roof.
My wife and I had never been to the Terlingua chile cookout till last year. We stayed with some friends of our who have a house 14 mile away. It's beautiful country. I remember years ago hearing that the winning chili was buzzard breath chili. About 30 years ago I was talking with a young man that got so drunk at the cookout he wandered off into the desert and fell down a mine and landed face down and one of his eyeballs popped out of socket still connected to his brain. He said he saw light staight up while face down. He said he didn't loose consciousness and no broken bones. He was found and no major injuries probably because he was so drunk....Only in Texas

In 2018, my family road tripped from Dallas to Big Bend National Park and stayed nearby at Lajitas Golf Resort. I remember going to the grocery store and surprised to see some gluten free and lots of name brand products. We visited Marfa, Alpine and Fort Davis area. It was the only time I’ve gotten to see the Milky Way. I’ve never been any here more rural but it’s an absolutely stunning area. My favorite part is the mayor of Lajitas is a goat.

It's the most remote part of Mexico there, and the only way through is on a road, and everyone in the small villages will see you coming . It's vitrually impossible to just trek by foot off the road there. So no real need for border patrol/wall there

Love your videos. I'm housebound and it's a wonderful way to see some of the country! Walking through that cemetery makes me wonder how many of those miners died from Mercury poisoning. Ugh. Not nice to think about passing that way.

Ha, I'm a native Texan and my wife is from the northwest and we have had numerous arguments during our 35 years of marriage over the beans/no beans debate. That is absolutely a hill I'm willing to die on. 😅

Have to put that Chili Cookoff on my bucket list.. FYI... Coins left on a headstone are a way to show respect to the deceased and to let the family know that someone visited: Pennies: A penny means that someone visited the headstone. Nickels: A nickel means that the visitor and the deceased veteran trained together at boot camp. Dimes: A dime means that the visitor and the deceased veteran served together in some capacity. The practice of leaving coins for the dead dates back to classical antiquity, when people believed that the dead needed coins to pay a ferryman to cross the river Styx.
That cemetery reminded me of one I visited in a ghost town in Alberta. There were a couple of surviving structures as well as a beautifully restored old church, out in the middle of nowhere. A few people lived on farms in the vicinity, but its days were long in the past, likely decided when the railroad no longer came through. The cemetery itself had an abundance of children buried there, which was tremendously sad to see. Given the dates of their short lives it coincided with the Spanish Flu epidemic, and I suspect that was the culprit for such a high mortality. There was one tragic citation though, a boy who had been killed by a barn door that fell on him. Hard, hard times.
I've been there twice while visiting Beg Bend national park. Most people there are tourist because the summers are an extremely hot time to visit. If you visit during summertime, you will succumb to heat related injuries if not careful an prepared while venturing out on trail hikes. The starlight theatre had good eats when I ate there years back. Also there are many unique places to stay around Terligua, Big Bend national park, Big Bend state park. Also it's extremely dark at night compared to being in a city.
So, for most of us that are not familiar with a true Texas chili, could you advise where we could go to buy/order some? Yeah, you peaked my interest!! BTW, I listened to your live interview the other day and LOVED it. .....Now, what about 'cat sightings'..?? I always look forward to your videos when they come out and always hope there are cat sightings. If I were to guess, one of the main hobbies of people in town would be "Creative Rock Stacking" I am also curious about the seasonal temperatures. It seems as if the late Fall and Winter might be the time to visit. Wolf brand chili is the best you will find in a can, it's made in Texas but isn't easily found in some places, and yes they have chili with or without beans.

I visited Terlingua several times in the late 1970's because I was playing music with Kent Finlay (the poet laureate of all things Texas Chili). Kent wrote the definitive song regarding the "Chili: beans or no beans?" controversy. The song was "If You Know Beans About Chili, You Know That Chili Has No Beans" If you know beans about chili You know it didn’t come from Mexico Chili was God’s gift to Texas (Or maybe it came from down below) And chili doesn’t go with macaroni And dammed Yankee’s don’t go with chili queens; And if you know beans about chili You know that chili has no beans - Ken Finlay 1976
Joe there was a famous murder of a bar owner in Terlingua a decade or so ago that they made a TV series about. The murder is still " unsolved " and makes a very interesting watch. NatGeo series "Badlands, Texas", I found it on YT. On a motorcycle trip from Houston to El Paso, I stopped in Terlingua for lunch before riding the Presidio Highway heading out west from Terlingua to Presidio (a very beautiful drive/ride) on Highway 170 (about 75 miles along the Rio Grande). Before getting on the bike to take off, I talked to a guy, who I found out is Mike Kaspar, a local and singer (who I came back later to see him play), he told me about the series, he's in it. Ended up talking to him for close to an hour before taking off for El Paso, great guy.
Sure is ALOT OF PLACES for sale out there! I kept seeing Terlingua Terlingua Terlingua on Zillow,i did a QUICK search and found it wasnt for me but.... super duper great to see a tour of it! 👍
Joe actually there are two Chili Cookoffs that take place each November (1st Saturday). They are across the road from each other. Temps. down there can hit 120 in Summer! One of the greens on the Lajitas course is on an island in the river.

My friend and I went there last April and did a similar thing, went through Langtry and Del Rio and then back up to north Texas where we live.

Yep, not a lot of border crossings in this area. It's too remote and the terrain is very unforgiving for miles either side of the river.

I've been there. It's a beautiful place to drive. It is very remote. I live in Texas and it's a 12 hour drive from where I am without stopping.

Love your videos. I'm housebound and it's a wonderful way to see some of the country! Walking through that cemetery makes me wonder how many of those miners died from Mercury poisoning. Ugh. Not nice to think about passing that way.
Next time down in the Presidio area, try Candelaria where the pavement ends. Truly the middle of nowhere and beautiful.
I bought some land just south of Dell City and west of the Guadalupe's. I've never seen it. I hope to get out there soon, your channel allows me to see the other side of Texas. Thank you. Eventually I'll actually retire 👍

Ha, I'm a native Texan and my wife is from the northwest and we have had numerous arguments during our 35 years of marriage over the beans/no beans debate. That is absolutely a hill I'm willing to die on. 😅

That cemetery reminded me of one I visited in a ghost town in Alberta. There were a couple of surviving structures as well as a beautifully restored old church, out in the middle of nowhere. A few people lived on farms in the vicinity, but its days were long in the past, likely decided when the railroad no longer came through. The cemetery itself had an abundance of children buried there, which was tremendously sad to see. Given the dates of their short lives it coincided with the Spanish Flu epidemic, and I suspect that was the culprit for such a high mortality. There was one tragic citation though, a boy who had been killed by a barn door that fell on him. Hard, hard times.

I've been there twice while visiting Beg Bend national park. Most people there are tourist because the summers are an extremely hot time to visit. If you visit during summertime, you will succumb to heat related injuries if not careful an prepared while venturing out on trail hikes. The starlight theatre had good eats when I ate there years back. Also there are many unique places to stay around Terligua, Big Bend national park, Big Bend state park. Also it's extremely dark at night compared to being in a city.
I've loved my "off-season" summer visits. Definitely requires focus on protecting oneself from the heat.
The last quirky town you were in also had higher median house value I think. This is right up my alley also.

BTW, I listened to your live interview the other day and LOVED it. .....Now, what about 'cat sightings'..?? I always look forward to your videos when they come out and always hope there are cat sightings. If I were to guess, one of the main hobbies of people in town would be "Creative Rock Stacking" I am also curious about the seasonal temperatures. It seems as if the late Fall and Winter might be the time to visit. Wolf brand chili is the best you will find in a can, it's made in Texas but isn't easily found in some places, and yes they have chili with or without beans.

I visited Terlingua several times in the late 1970's because I was playing music with Kent Finlay (the poet laureate of all things Texas Chili). Kent wrote the definitive song regarding the "Chili: beans or no beans?" controversy. The song was "If You Know Beans About Chili,

Joe there was a famous murder of a bar owner in Terlingua a decade or so ago that they made a TV series about. The murder is still " unsolved " and makes a very interesting watch. I can't remember the name but I am sure you can find it . If you find and watch it let us know what you think of it !!! Keep up the great productions !!!!!!

NatGeo series "Badlands, Texas", I found it on YT. On a motorcycle trip from Houston to El Paso, I stopped in Terlingua for lunch before riding the Presidio Highway heading out west from Terlingua to Presidio (a very beautiful drive/ride) on Highway 170 (about 75 miles along the Rio Grande). Before getting on the bike to take off, I talked to a guy, who I found out is Mike Kaspar, a local and singer (who I came back later to see him play), he told me about the series, he's in it. Ended up talking to him for close to an hour before taking off for El Paso, great guy.
Good trip along the way. Reminds me of the small town Muleshoe Texas which is north west of here 6 or 7 hours

Joe actually there are two Chili Cookoffs that take place each November (1st Saturday). They are across the road from each other. Temps. down there can hit 120 in Summer! One of the greens on the Lajitas course is on an island in the river.
Texas certainly has some good BBQ. I would like to taste some of that Chili 🌶️.
