Yeah I was going to get a W212 and then I watched this video talking about all the issues on top of the rotting subframe. This is unacceptable from a "luxury" brand. I dont care if they replace the subframe at no cost. How long will that replacement last? Also its just the fact that it will be in the shop for this and that perpetually. Reminds me of BMW, constantly needing somethig so you can never enjoy the vehicle as you should, always wondering what will go wrong next. Even with warranty no one wants car in shop all the time. Thanks for the upload on his, it potentially saved me a huge headache, but also crushed my enthusiasm for getting the vehicle.
Aside from the subframe (which is a free fix, thankfully) these w212s have hundreds of thousands of miles on them. Problem is when you buy a non-maintained one. If the chassis has been, they have next to no issues, no more than any other car. The difference comes to WANTING to drive it like it’s new so yeah, I’ll get every little thing fixed as it has the potential to drive so much better than most cars. I know tons owners with well over 200k on m272, m276, m273 or diesel options. They generally don’t have many issues, which is the sole reason they are used still as workhorse taxis all over the world. Again, choose a performance engine? Gonna need some extra love. I don’t think anything I say in this video is anything out of the normal truthfully. Just buyer (and wallet) beware when getting a baby AMG, twin turbo V8 lmao. Get a 2010-2015 e350 or diesel, 2011 or older e550 or e63 and you’ll do nothing but change the oil. I’ll end by saying, if you want a cheap car, don’t get an older Mercedes. If you want a 50-70k car for a cheap cost of entry, the w212 is a great modern place to start. Do your research, buy responsibly, and for the love of god don’t go to the dealership and understand the car and chassis.
@@mrapter7 Yeah, I read the diesels are more reliable, but I dont know anything about maintaining a diesel engine. I really like the style of this gen E350. Yeah I stay away from the stealerships no matter what make of car it is. They know next to nothing and are just there to churn cars in and out. I may still consider buying one , since the chasis is a free fix, but is it an improved chasis without the rust issue later down the line or is it just an overstock chasis they install in there from the same batches that were defective? For someone who isnt really a Mercedes person what would you recommend someone look at and check before buying (Besides usual stuff) like any particular places leaks happen to watch out for, any exhaust issues or things like that, leaky sunroofs (pano roofs/ regular sunroofs) etc?
Unfortunately, with any German car, you pay to play. Buying a used W212 for $15k but having to pay on spending another $10 to $15k to fix all the future failures, geez 😳
@@kmorton54 No matter which way you cut it German cars are lease-only (unless you are a fool who likes supporting car part suppliers). German quality is long gone and just a myth at thispoint. The quality hasbeen with Japanese cars, while less thrilling they wont leave you stranded or throwing away money at issues nearly as much as German cars. (not even close).
@jensz9360 eh I disagree. Any car that pushes limits in any regard - performance, luxury, handling, a little bit of all 3 - will always require a little more attention than a basic Camry. While I agree all German cars of this caliber need more love than most, I’d rather have this than a Camry with 0 issues. I’m sure I’ll grow out of that thought soon enough haha
I heard w211 Mercedes Benz E500 is very reliable, naturally aspirated with excellent interior, the wood doesn’t fade and the seats are all genuine leather , not Faux leather like w212. What do you think? Can you make a video about w211 models?
I don’t have access to a w211 right now but I will try to get my hands on one. I’ve had time behind the wheel in one and they are very solid cars, great dynamics. Not as sporty as the 212s, the interior hasn’t aged as well, but I’d buy a 211 350 in a heartbeat as a second car. The 500 is great. The m113 engine is ultra solid - but so is the m273 in the w212 early years. Ideally the 2010-2011 w212 550 gets you a great modern car with no real engine problems. I’ll see what I can do about getting behind the wheel of one!
Hmm, maybe you should do some more googling! It’s an official Bulletin by Mercedes, and a common issue in m276,m278, and m157 family of engines! Especially 2013 and older biturbo
The same as the sedan - like anything get one with a good history and they’re very solid cars, especially the ones without the twin turbo V8. Keep in mind these need to be maintained - you should expect 1-3k a year minimum for basic maintenance. Some repairs can be 2-3k at a time. Not crazy, but it’s still a $70k+ car and you should expect repairs and maintenance that fits. If you are not willing to give it the love it needs as you own it, things will break and cost $$$$.
These are minor things compared to what i'm going thru with my 2012 E350 with the M276 engine, CURRENTLY. I'm talking about Cam sensor needs to be replaced (4) because they are throwing oil to the harness and in the ECU, Oil cooler gasket is leaking oil.....This issue is a growing problem on the m276 i have heard from a few mechanics. Also, the Crankshaft Seal Cover with Seal is leaking too. I don't think they (MB) wants most of these cars to last more 10 years.
No, that’s not true. To be fair, at I’m guessing close to 100k miles and 10 years (time especially) gaskets may be due for replacement, and service is needed. It’s also how it was treated the first 50k or so in its life. If it was a lease and beat on, you’re gonna have some issues down the line for sure. Nothing crazy, but more wear on items. The cam sensors are super easy to do, and are known to leak oil up on the pigtails and eventually I to the ECU. But that’s a very very slow process. I wish you luck on the repairs, these seem fairly straight forward, aside from the Crankshaft seal. They aren’t cheap to fix, but they’re worth it to fix, imo!
@@mrapter7 yes sorry I should have added the miles on my car (123k miles) as context and the issues- (check engine light and codes- P0300, P0302, P0303, P0130, P2243). They quoted me $8-9kK to repair it (engine out to repair). i'm in the NYC area. But I have seen a few mechanics state its an increasingly prevalent issue.

@@mrapter7 Not worth it, just dump the car already. Its a lost cause. For the amount you purchased it for plus repairs you could have bought a newer model MB straight away with less miles and not have to deal with the hassle or a completely different make that is more reliable. Reminds me of Range Rover, when you go to the service area and are waiting for your Range to get repaired for the 10th time in a year, it never fails the waiting area has around 8 people waiting and they run out of loaners, and the owners are all sitting bragging about how much their repairs are costing them and essentially taking some kind of foolish pride in how much money they are wasting at the dealership to keep the piece of junk on the road (each one trying to one-up the other with tales of how costly the Range Rover is). You just sit and listen and then decide its time to get rid of the junk pile asap before you become those very same people sitting in a circle jerk bragging of how much you pissed away keeping a car driveable.
@@mrapter7 Yep, it's hard to save up in this economy much less afford another car. Between inflated prices and astronomical interest rates, I'll buy an engine before I buy another car. Cheaper in the long run.
@r.weaver3769 honestly dude thank you for understanding my thought lmao. I love this car, and a new engine like this gives me a solid 6+ years and a chance to maintain it better than intended to have a better outcome. Well worth it IMO. Couldn’t have just bought a Camry and been fine? Yes. I think about that a lot too. But I’m an enthusiast. Life’s too short to drive boring shit.
In that generation they’re generally very stout. The V8s are pretty much bullet proof when taken care of. Plenty of 200k mile examples. Same with the 6 cyl, however from my experience they’ll maintain about the same. I’d go for the V8 if both are in good condition and have a good history
Nope! You’d get something In the mail. You can also call your local dealer about it and see if you’re covered. It’s a partial warranty so they pay some of it
I wish you were right, and my subframe didn’t have rust! The aluminum chassis of the 211 were rust free. They went back to a steel subframe for the 212. It’s all over the internet and I’ve seen about 6 this year that we’re finally due!
There is a recall of sorts for it and MErcedes will replace the entire subframe free of charge and if you already did prior to the notice they will reimburse you for the cost. The fact is this should not have happened with a luxury vehicle brand like this. Its pitiful. Seems like the W212 isnt worth it. A real shame considering it looks great, iinterior is nice and everything.
It’s sort of correlated with the upgrade from 5g to 7g and 7g+ transmissions but isn’t the only reason. It was really a broader design shift for more interior space and ergonomic choices
You can’t. There’s really nothing of value to get on the e350. You’re better off having your pedal response changed and sport+ and manual modes, plus mecedes sound design for pops. Follow me on IG I post about it @KoreanSeats
After 2014 they did make adjustments and changes from what we have seen. They are not “safe” but simply too new to have issues. In a poll online, nearly all issues were found within 2009-2013 pre facelift. It’s typically a 10-12 year issue from new is what I’ve seen, but depends on the life of the car and where it was driven! I wouldn’t let it deter you especially after 2014!
@@mrapter7 I have a 2014 e250 diesel, I drive it year round up here in Canada and no rust underneath at all other than a few nuts and bolts. I do give it a undercarriage wash every few months. I bought it new in 2014 and put almost 450,000 km on it. not a single issue whatsoever only oil changes and regular maintenance done. amazing cars
That nut and bolt rust can be the start. You have to remember that these things rust from the inside out. If you see rust, it may be already happening. I would get an Indy shop to confirm or deny what you saw. Someone who knows specifically these cars, as I have seen people have “no rust” but then have them fail within 6 months. I hope you’re all good but just looking Out! Thank for the comment!
Tuned? If not you have no idea what you’re missing my man. Stage 1 is all you need on these. Stage 2 tend to be too hard on the 278s for very little extra gain
Yeah back in the day there were two plugs per cylinder to make sure it had a very clean burn. With DI engines this isn’t needed as everything is so granular. 8 plugs. $30 at the dealer for Benz, or the same part by Bosch for $8. Make sure they’re indexed and gapped correctly. Even the OEM plugs don’t come indexed correctly all the time.
@mrapter7 a 2012 e550 my buddy just bought, im seeing some oil in coolant tank. Whats more likely head gaskets or cooler? Its minor atm car pulls great. Any idea? Thank you for your time
@Dean-pc1ok generally that’s not good at all. Stop driving the thing. Could be a bad gasket at the oil filter housing / cooler. Head gaskets like never go bad on these cars. How many miles? My money is on this gasket.
@mrapter7 95k miles, i also got it up on the ramps, the inspection plug on the transmission was oil filled. Without opening any of the mechanical components i would say his main seal is on the way out too. Is that a common failure point too? He bought the car yesterday for 13k includes some funny money 500 dollar warranty lol
You paid 15k for the car and another 10k to make it run great, you could have rented the best luxury car for that much money. I got crazy about 2014 E350 and did test drive few of them but I couldn’t get convinced that it could compare to my 1999 Lexus ES300 or my previously owned mercedes 300E w124 that I owned 20 years ago. My Lexus has 256 K and the worst thing I faced with it is a knock sensor which is nothing compared to MB or worse BMW and Audi. I think German are smart in making beautiful furniture called vehicles. While the Japanese make reliable cars but unfortunately they recently started to make ugly cars with stupid looking grill and geometrically uneven exhausts. The thing I loved in the MB 2013 to 2016 is that the exhaust is hidden. That’s a nice thing but airmatic, timing chain and cheap interior makes me look to find a 1980 or 1990s w124 or w126.
My man I’ve spent a LOT more than that. Full engine replacement so she’s as good as new. Worth it? To me, yep. Will I ever see that money back? Nope. Do I smile like a madman every time I drive? Hell yeah If I wanted to be bored, I’d get a Lexus. I don’t want to lease a car, I don’t see any point in that as I keep my cars for a whole. W124 is a killer car I’d love one at some point. But my 550 is my pride and joy and I love what I drive. Life’s too short to drive a boring Lexus

Yeah the engine needs some love on early m278s, springs are cheap, your subframe should be covered under Mercedes warranty but - it’s a 70k car and has the same maintenance requirements it did before
@@Fellowtraveller2 hi there - yes - if you get an Airmatic suspension, it is at least $5000 to the price to replace all four corners - depending on where you live and whether you go OEM or out of manufacturer. OEM front struts are more than $2000 each. My retail for the car though was $16000 - so I had extra. 2nd hand e400 4matic I love it to be honest Also - you will not replace them all at once - you'll do fine, then back - but you will have to replace them eventually, all shocks are consumables It was painful! And they will have to be changed again in 5 years. This video really helped me figure out the costs - I am very grateful I went ahead I love the car - and I was prepared.
Hmmm it’s really an engine reliability issue. I didn’t mention any other real major issues (subframe covered, and is still a fixable issue, all brands have air suspension issues etc) the chassis is solid. At 160k miles the biggest chassis issue I have? Wheel bearings. And that’s kinda predictable with this many miles with a heavy engine. Front end suspension worn out and needs to be refreshed. This in a normal m272 v6 e350 easily goes 200k without much fuss. Diesels are regularly hitting 500k - see them all the time in our group! Choose a good engine and this platform will love you
Understandable - it’s more on the newer m276/278 platforms, less common on the v6. But, engine maintenance at 100k is a thing and don’t think this is crazy, personally.

Love the video bro, I can’t wait to see more happening
Thanks for the support!
Good video. But skip the music
Heard!
Really bad sound , you need to lower your audio. Especially if you doing important information. Thank you.
Yep 100% made an error in this one! Thanks for the feedback and watching!
Sir do you have link for your steering wheel? Thanks so much and stay blessed 🙏😇❤️
Link? It came with the car! Haha
Haven't come across any of these with timing chain issues, sounds like a reach...
Hmm, maybe you should do some more googling! It’s an official Bulletin by Mercedes, and a common issue in m276,m278, and m157 family of engines! Especially 2013 and older biturbo
Are the E550 Convertibles a money pit or are they reliable?
The same as the sedan - like anything get one with a good history and they’re very solid cars, especially the ones without the twin turbo V8. Keep in mind these need to be maintained - you should expect 1-3k a year minimum for basic maintenance.
Some repairs can be 2-3k at a time. Not crazy, but it’s still a $70k+ car and you should expect repairs and maintenance that fits.
If you are not willing to give it the love it needs as you own it, things will break and cost $$$$.
Cool it with the loud music wow.
Sorry dad
Yes for sure, they have their common gremlins, big or small. I would totally abstain from the dealer. Find a trusted Indy in your area. Better yet, join The W212 Owners Club on Facebook, Tons of w212 owners from your area with recommendations ready. Tag me in the post if you ask!
@@mrapter7 thanks for listening I will do that.
Thanks for watching!
I just got the letter from MB on my 14' to have dealer check my sub frame and they have extended the warranty in them.
Yes, already got mine done! Save for brake lines. Going to cost me $1500 for new copper lines and a brake flush, need to get done before the winter!
@@mrapter7 Mine just passed the inspection. Car is ready for another 140k.
Hi from dubai. Great information videos. Can you suggest is ml 500 2008 reliable or is ml 350 2008 . Is v6 more reliable than v8
In that generation they’re generally very stout. The V8s are pretty much bullet proof when taken care of. Plenty of 200k mile examples. Same with the 6 cyl, however from my experience they’ll maintain about the same. I’d go for the V8 if both are in good condition and have a good history
I almost stopped watching because of the music. Glad you turned it down.
Noted! Will not be a problem in the future. Thanks for the feedback and for watching man!
The music is very loud and no good
Hello mate, video is nice. But music is louder than you own voice. Good luck.👍
In the beginning yes, I’ve gotten loads of feedback 😂 thank you for watching! Newer videos are not like that
what kind of external warranty do you have? Looking at a high mileage 2012 E550
worried about the cam adjusters
I have it through USWC. As fair as a warranty company could be. Not great. But helped me
Endurance is the best warranty company to go with. Hands down.
Go for fidelity. It's one of the best.
Great recommendation I second this
Lawsuit for the faded wood trim? How do I get in on that. Do you have to be the original owner or no?
Nope! You’d get something In the mail. You can also call your local dealer about it and see if you’re covered. It’s a partial warranty so they pay some of it
Great video!
Thank you so much!
This was helpful thanks..🇬🇧

Mercedes corrected the rust issues after the W210...
What's the difference of a normal gear stick and the electric gear near the steering wheel?
It’s sort of correlated with the upgrade from 5g to 7g and 7g+ transmissions but isn’t the only reason. It was really a broader design shift for more interior space and ergonomic choices
@mrapter7 okay, having more gears translates to better fuel economy?
Generally? Yes
I have 2013 E350 4matic. I don't think I have twin turbo in my engine. Are you sure you have twin turbo in there my boy ?
You do realize you’re talking about a 350 vs a 550
@@mrapter7 So yours is 550 ?...never heard you saying that ? My is 350 and I do not have turbo engine .
@1978MODO yep it’s all over the channel and on the back of the car!
I just picked up a 2014 E350 in northern cali where can I get a flash tune?
You can’t. There’s really nothing of value to get on the e350. You’re better off having your pedal response changed and sport+ and manual modes, plus mecedes sound design for pops. Follow me on IG I post about it @KoreanSeats
Turn the music up I can still hear you 🗣️
AYE FAM THIS GOOD
Me too!
Background music too loud, it’s distracting!
whats up with the background music?
It’s too loud, why did you notice? 😂
I have a 2016 E350. You talk about the subframe rust but you stop at 2013 models. Is the 2016 safe?
After 2014 they did make adjustments and changes from what we have seen. They are not “safe” but simply too new to have issues. In a poll online, nearly all issues were found within 2009-2013 pre facelift.
It’s typically a 10-12 year issue from new is what I’ve seen, but depends on the life of the car and where it was driven!
I wouldn’t let it deter you especially after 2014!
@@mrapter7 thanks man! Great video!

Just bought a 2014 e550 4matic that motherfucker rips
Tuned? If not you have no idea what you’re missing my man. Stage 1 is all you need on these. Stage 2 tend to be too hard on the 278s for very little extra gain
How many spark plugs does it have? Old e500 i worked on had 16!!
Thank you for your insight, i def don't think it's headgasket after further looking
Hell yeah
If I wanted to be bored, I’d get a Lexus. I don’t want to lease a car, I don’t see any point in that as I keep my cars for a whole.
W124 is a killer car I’d love one at some point. But my 550 is my pride and joy and I love what I drive. Life’s too short to drive a boring Lexus
Because of the music, i give you 1/10.

😮 counted $8000 - $10000 dollars immediately. More actually. Non-cosmetic.
Yeah the engine needs some love on early m278s, springs are cheap, your subframe should be covered under Mercedes warranty but - it’s a 70k car and has the same maintenance requirements it did before
I was seriously thinking of getting an E350 ….but not anymore. Which part costs $1800. And you need 4 of them? Plus installation?
@@Fellowtraveller2 hi there - yes - if you get an Airmatic suspension, it is at least $5000 to the price to replace all four corners - depending on where you live and whether you go OEM or out of manufacturer. OEM front struts are more than $2000 each.
My retail for the car though was $16000 - so I had extra.
2nd hand e400 4matic
I love it to be honest
Also - you will not replace them all at once - you'll do fine, then back - but you will have to replace them eventually, all shocks are consumables
It was painful!
It is not a good idea to buy Mercedes unless you have the money - the repairs remain what you would spend on an $80,000 vehicle
@@mrapter7 This is a great video - honest - and it helped me buy

Ex - Toyota manager so interior is immaculate, the v6 is very smooth and solid, just did a transmission service
Nothing wrong with the car at all - but it passed its warranty and The four Air struts had to be changed - more than $2000 each corner.
And they will have to be changed again in 5 years.
This video really helped me figure out the costs - I am very grateful I went ahead
I love the car - and I was prepared.
Background music destroys everything.
For about the 1,000th time, heard lmao.
And the W212 is supposed to be the most reliable E series class!!!! I would hate to see the problems with the worst chassis series.

Understandable - it’s more on the newer m276/278 platforms, less common on the v6. But, engine maintenance at 100k is a thing and don’t think this is crazy, personally.

Any mercedes 2013 and older are just scrap and good for spare parts!!!!!!
Quite the opposite I think. W212 feels like the last solid chassis before they went to a budget in my opinion
@@mrapter7 my opinion is based from all the diesel models which have the infamous injector issues which are clamped down with one bolt, which affects om611 om642 engines, electrical gremlins with canbus issues, and oil cooler leaks on all om642. I’ve had 4 mercedes, e270 Cdi, e220 Cdi, cls320 cdi
And my mk2 sprinter. The engines are good but the problems they have I think mercedes made them that way so people go back to the stealer and spend money. They stopped making them rock solid after all year 2000 models. The AMG PETROL Versions are a beautiful.
Idk, in our group we see MANY MANY vehicles (diesels) with over 250-500k miles in some cases. Sure they aren’t as Tanky as an old 1985 diesel but that’s super old tech making very little power. For the most part the engines are incredibly reliable (aside from some CDI and bluetech stuff)
